Funny that you put this up today, My friend and I had this conversation last night. She asked me if Taemin's surname is supposed to be pronounced "Lee" or "I" and I just gave her a whole lesson on vowels. She says it confuses her. I've directed her to your videos but she says she can't concentrate on what you're saying because you're too good looking. Not gonna lie though, main reason I watch your videos is because you are beautiful. I've been studying Korean for 8 years now, so I'm learning nothing from you I didn't already know. But you're nice to look at. I also quite enjoy your sense of humor!

When I'm watching my favorites, I often have to pause on a sub or rewind a scene tho cuz I'm too distracted to read anything. Lol
I guess the Korean surname pronunced as Yi is romanised as Lee because it is written as 李 in Hanja (Chinese characters used to write in Korean in the past) and 李 is pronunced Li in Chinese.

People should learn Korean alphabet and this things would be basics. In Korean, Lee is spelled as 이 which if romanized will be I or ee. If it is spelled as 리 it will be romanized as Li/Ri/Lee and it is more likely to be a Chinese surname. So I or EE for korean And Li or Lee for Chinese. Lol do I make sense? 😂

I love getting your tutorials in pronouncing Korean names properly. Would you also consider teaching us short phrases or conversational Korean that would be appropriate things for a foreigner to ask or say while in Korea? That would be awesome!👍 😊
There is a grammar rule called “두음법칙(first syllable rule).” It says that when ㄹ comes as the first syllable, it becomes ㄴ and when 리(니),랴(냐),려(녀),료(뇨),류(뉴),례(녜) come as the first syllable, it becomes 이, 야, 여, 요, 유, 예. So, if you look up a paper Korean dictionary, you will see that there are very few pages that cover “ㄹ”. All the words that start with “ㄹ” in the dictionary are foreign words such as “라디오(radio)” “라면(ramen)” or postpostions (~로) that come after noun. So, anyhow, North Koreans don’t have 두음법칙. So, in South Korea, a woman is 여자, but in North Korea it’s 녀자. Contacting is 연락 in South Korea, 련락 in North Korea. Labor is 노동 in South Korea, but it’s 로동 in North Korea. Anyhow, the Korean surname 노 is originally 로. But, as the last name comes first in Korean, it’s first syllable and it became 노. However, if you write out your name in English, neither the last name comes first nor the English language has 두음법칙. So, they romanize as Roh. Source : www.quora.com/Why-is-the-Korean-surname-노-romanized-as-Roh
My younger sis has used to have a circle of korean friends and had a korean boyfriend who taught her to speak korean. And yeah my sis taught me too some of them even the pronunciations of their names.
How to pronounce your name correctly? Sibong or Shibong? I'm studying Korean until now and I know that 시읏 reads "Shi" and not "Si" in Korean. Please I need help from a real Korean.
I wpuld also add from the explanation offered from you that many translitteration of Korean family names were influenced due the enthusiasm from the R.O.K. citizens toward the Americans during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. The South Korean citizens were so happy that the Americans were helping the Republic of Korea that when translitterated the family names they tried to make them more similar to the American ones. Like for example 이 李 (Yi or Lee, an example could be the famous 李舜臣 이순신 Yi Sun-Shin) or 김 金 (Kim, an ecample of the Kim clan could be 金大中 김대중 Kim Dae-Jung or Kim Tae-Jeong) or 박 朴 (Pak or Park, an example could be *cough* 朴槿惠 박근혜 Park Geun-Hye), we can leave already Kim but for Lee for example in American history there was the General Robert E. Lee. I hope my clarification is informative and truthful!
