      Just a little fun fact, “maknae” is actually how it is written in Korean (character by character) but in Korea they use something called consonant assimilation which changes it to “mangnae” to make it easier to pronounce as the sound ng is easier than k :) (btw im learning Korean so that is how I know lol 💜💜)

    • @listentoday6
      @listentoday6 5 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      They most of the times add "-ah" or "-ie" at the end of the names so their words slides off smoothly in a sentence. Especially if it ends on a consonant. And the "-ssi" is used for honorifics. They add it so they can still sound formal no matter what's the age of the person you're talking to.

    • @jana2929
      @jana2929 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@listentoday6 Yes it really sounds so cute with "ah" or "ie" at the end, I like it very much when I hear it sometimes, but they say it so quickly, it would be great to hear it a bit slower like in this video. Thank you very much for the explanation when they use it 😉👍

    Korea Now, excellent idea!! And you've given the assignment to the best person for the job, Korean Unnie, Moon So-hyun, who is a great and real teacher!
    Unnie could make this kind of video about a wide scope of names. Is it important to use a hyphen? What is better, So-hyun or Sohyun? Do people think much about the meaning of their names? Does every name mean something?

    • @camelliadandelion
      @camelliadandelion 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      If you can read the Korean name correctly, the hyphen is not necessary. It helps to distinguish each single Korean letter. Most Korean people has one letter for last name(김,Kim) and two letters for first name(남준,nam jun or nam joon). Each letter has a different meaning. We write 김남준 in Korean. So hyphen is only used in English. We don't have middle name. But if we write Nam Joon Kim, Than foreigners may think Joon is the middle name. So we put it together like Namjoon Kim. How Kind 😆😋. (I'm not good at English. So please excuse my writing)

    • @danijeld8669
      @danijeld8669 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@camelliadandelion Thank you a lot for explaining and for clearing up the doubt! 👍👍 Your English seems great!
      A question regarding the order, if it's OK - So, in Korean it must be written only as 김남준, not 남준김. But in English we can use both Nam(-)joon Kim and Kim Nam(-)joon, right?

    • @camelliadandelion
      @camelliadandelion 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@danijeld8669 yes, only 김남준 in Korean. But most people use 'Namjoon Kim' in a foreign country 'cos most foreigners don't know that Koreans put the family name first. 'Kim namjoon' also can be used under certain circumstances🙂💜

      I'm not Korean myself but I found and watched a video on youtube where they explained the meaning of the names of the BTS' members (ye, I'm an army lol what a surprise). There they said that Koreans really value the meaning of their names and take it really seriously when they have to choose the name of their soon-to-be-born child, since they believe that the meaning of your name will determine the kind of person you will become in the future. You can discover the meaning of a korean name by using hanja (chinese characters). Some names though come directly from the korean language like idk Sarang (사랑= love), Haneul (하늘= sky), Bom (봄= Spring) so Hanja is not needed, some names are western ones but koreanized like 수지 (Suzy). Idk why I got too excited about this lol. There are even people who do "name creators" for a living!! I found it really fascinating.
      Let's take a look at Jungkook's name (the only name I can remember the meaning of. The others were too difficult for my poor korean skills) means "to be a pillar/tree of the nation". Apparently 정 (Jung) meaning something like pillar/tree and 국 (kook) meaning country. I'll put the link here if I find it. It's really fascinating!!!!
      My aunt is Korean and during a family gathering we had fun choosing our korean names while trying to keep the roots of our original name. Mine is Kim Se Rin (김세린) lol. "Se" because my name is Sheena so we kept the S. "Rin" comes from my second name "MauReen". "Se" means "generation, age, world" and "Rin" means "female unicorn". Soo I guess it means "the female unicorn of the generation/of the world" (????) LMAO. I've always had a certain obsession with unicorns since my childhood and now that I think about it it's quite fitted lol.

    I taught myself the korean alphabet and how to read the Hangul characters a long time ago. Since then, til now. I never use romanization to help me pronounce korean names or in general korean words. Learning to read the Hangul characters helped me to not use romanization at all. I speak Spanish fluently. It was my first language. And in Spanish we have the same vowel pronunciation like in Hangul. So my Spanish helped me with pronouncing some korean. I don’t rely on that tho cause they are both completely different languages. But it helped with how to pronounce the basic characters. The way she is pronouncing their names. Is exactly the way I’ve been pronouncing their names for a long time now ☺️ I don’t pronounce it any other way because this is what I’m use too pronouncing them like.
