In "Peak Performance" when Data first loses the game he thinks something is wrong with him, until Picard tells him, "It is possible to do everything right and still lose. That is not a fault, that is life." This was a very important thing for teenage me to hear.

@@pwnmeisterage Or plain old conservatism / prejudice hasn't been as thoroughly wiped out of human society as the episodes might have led us to believe. After all, I grew up in the 1970s and thought matters like Evolution were a long-settled question, or to learn later in life that there are still a lot of folks (my opinion of which is best left unsaid) who believe in the literal six days of Creation and that Evolution is a lie because it makes the whole idea of Jesus dying for our sins basically nonsensical. I knew racism still existed but was amazed at the true extent of it (having grown up in a rural area where there happened to be no minorities whatsoever). Iow what we grew up thinking we knew often turns out to not be quite correct; or at least not quite in conformance with what other people think *they* know.
But yes her character was clearly designed to recreate McCoy's personality. But what worked for Deforest Kelly clearly did not work for Diana Muldaur. For whatever reason. Prime directive would be an excellent topic to scrutinize. There's so much contention there, it's used as an excuse for inaction as well as disregarded when it's convenient, a thorough analysis would be interesting.

    • @justfitz08
      @justfitz08 ปีที่แล้ว +5

There also seems to be too much discussion on where the prime directive applies and where it doesnt.
Surely the academy would have a interstellar contact philosophy class that specifically teaches this very subject. There should be little confusion or disagreement amongst the crew on how to apply the prime directive in a variety of situations. And even if there were, the captain should have a handbook ready to reference the details as needed. If it's really so important, then you can't have people disregarding it or coming up with new interpretations as needed.
Pen Pals is a good example. If Picard did what he was supposed to do, then he would have told Data and everyone else "no." But then he proceeds to fudge it and receives no consequences for doing so other than it being briefly mentioned in the episode Drummhead.

@@justfitz08the fact everyone has different interpretations of it isn't a stretch. Look at our own laws, and how we'll have one judge disagree with another on what the wording actually means or what the real implied scope of the law is. And the Prime directive is kind of solely based upon ethics and morals, so it's almost inherent that species with free will, will have different interpretations of it. Having a philosophy class to solve the issue, could just compound it even more 😂
Anyway, hopefully that argument can help you to suspend disbelief, because I think it's a valid point

    • @oldylad
      @oldylad 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@justfitz08the prime directive is a directive, it’s not a law but breaching it can get you in serious trouble. The federation isn’t stupid, they know that there are special circumstances where it must be breached, but it exists because of many in universe examples of really bad things happening as a result of federation interference. Cultural influence is a pretty big deal, it could cause a nuclear war that wipes out the species, or an authoritarian xenophobic regime that eventually goes to war with them, or many other societal problems. Even the smallest thing, like curing a disease could change the course of that civilization for the worse. I think it was created by the Vulcans to stop humanity the tellarites and the andorans from fucking up other civilizations, and given their study and eventual reveal to humanity once they developed warp this makes sense. We can’t really guess if the directive is smart, but, not interfering with pre warp civilizations is likely the smartest option imo, as the culture shock could be disastrous for billions. Some special circumstances, like a world exploding, are interesting to argue over though

The show is still finding its feet, and it's a very TOS-like episode, but it's got a fittingly cheesy soundtrack, some nice shots centered on the revolving door (the focal point of the episode), and nice character vignettes. I've been watching and rewatching the TNG series since the late 90s when I was in high school, back then the depiction of "racist" was represented by an act of vulgar and insulting superiority of one race over the other, take for example the themes in the movie American History X and the events that take place; nowadays you cannot make a movie like that because some will claim it promotes discrimination and hate. We have to draw the line again between what is reality and what is fiction because we are slowly mutilating satire and creativity to the tunes of constantly redefining what "racism" is. I'm Italian and I've seen plenty of tv and internet content where they show stereotypes like organized crime families, men with greasy hair and white tank tops waving hands, families that always eat for dinner an exaggerated amount of food, how we are always late, how we cannot have anything but pasta, that we are obsessed with fashion, and so on. Some of these stereotypes are based on truths and some are exaggerated while others are fantasy, but we get along and learn to laugh at it because we are mature enough not to get offended by the slight of criticism. Also, consider the time context and how society was different thirty or forty years ago when productions were made. No Italian ever felt discriminated or called "racism" because of The Sopranos or The Godfather when they depict us as greedy-murderer-pasta-eaters. Nonetheless, I applaud you for the quality of your videos and knowledge in ST, keep it up.

Nowadays everything is considered racist, sexism, or another "insert some typical and not general butt hurt stuff of the week" here. And admirably most of this young generations are more intolerant, delusional than ever. It seems that people get each day more and more delusional and can't differentiate between fiction and reality.
Everything is considered sexism and racism or whatever, and then we get the lowest state of the art , like Hollywood, Disney, etc are nowadays. A bunch of snowflake radicals based on delusional ideologies , etc etc. Soon Pinocchio is a female puppet that menstruates every time that lies, and Geppetto like transgender or whatever sexual stuff they want to modify for the sake of "supposed" gender wars. And art becomes secondary nor relevant. What is curious is that this kind of weird society evolution is more visible in USA (the most delusional country in the world with Russia, North Korea, China, India, England, France side by side) and England and France are becoming a mess also. Weird case study for future humans for sure ( like in future 3 or 5 centuries)

Awkward is probably the most accurate description for the issues TNG's first two seasons went through. But as bad as some of those episodes were , both S1 & S2 had some of the best episodes in the entire series.
I don't think anyone would argue my opinion that s2's
Measure of a Man is not just a Top 5 TNG episode but one of the beat episodes of any ST series period.
    How about S1's
The Big Goodbye which gave us
Dixon Hill & was the first Holodeck centered episode.
As far as S2 I think I'm in the minority but I actually really enjoy
The Royale. There are some pretty funny moments.
Where Slience has Lease is a good episode considering the fact that it's one of those cheap episodes in which 90% takes place on the bridge.
Pen Pals is a good one.
Samaritan Snare isn't a particularly good episode but we get some much needed character building for Picard & the artificial heart story is used in Tapestry which is an excellent episode.
    Ya know I'll agree that
S1 was rough & S3 was when they hit the mark , but I don't think S2 is simply a bridge to S3 with a few good episodes. This video shows it was much better then we remember. The biggest problem with S2 is that the Stinkers are REALLY BAD &
Shades of grey was a huge mistake.

If you don't understand why Mudd worked so well, you wind up with Okona.
Also, calling back to a recent episode, it would seem Darwin Station had espers. That video made me really want to get the current run of the comics, which features Gary Mitchell and other energy beings. I really enjoy this channel.

When Tyler alluded to the worst episode of TNG being in season 2, I couldn't picture which episode he was referring to.
But then he showed "Shades of Gray" and then the pain came rushing back to me.
I had blocked this episode out. I've seen every TNG episode atleast 6 or 7 times, except for "Shades of Gray".
I saw it once and once was enough.

Keep going with these, very enjoyable. Watching these first seasons at time of broadcast was a chore, especially as here in Ireland their scheduling was so slow and chaotic that we watched most of them on rented VHS (2 episodes to a tape). A Canadian friend brought us home-taped Season 3 episodes while we were still at the start of Season 2 - and it was a horrible shock dropping back from that to this.

Great video. One correction though: Riker wasn't threatened with losing his commission if he didn't prosecute against Data in 'The measure of a man', he was told if he didn't, the court would summarily rule against Data. His only hope of saving Data was to argue against him and hope he lost. It gives his position far more tension in the episode, and is the reason why Data thanks him at the end, as he accepted the personal pain of risking losing his friend on the hope of saving him. Another excellent aspect to one of the best written episodes of Trek.

I'm old enough to have experienced TNG at the time, but I watch it straight through every few years. I appreciate some of the good stories more deeply as an adult than I did when I was much younger, I only skip some of the truly atrocious episodes. There are some cringy and dated episodes as Tyler points out, but there's some great episodes too which haven't been poisoned by the political activism of recent Trek.

there is an interesting scene in the episode pen pals which i feel like is so suttble and never talked about but it is the start of a character ark with riker which plays an important part best of both worlds. because in that episode riker is so sure the thing to do in every situation in pen pals is to ask yourself one question what would picard do. and in the best of the worlds it turns out its the one thing you have to not do in order to save the day. it almost feels like in some ways the best of the worlds was calling out season 1 and 2 for its sumg way of thinking. saying that way of thinking needs to change. its funny because i have no idea if that was intentional to have riker have to figure out he is the captain and has to not think like picard to save the day or not but it feels too subtle to be intentional lol but if its not intentional then it somehow ends up fitting perfectly with rikers established character.

YES! I would love to hear your takes on all of the seasons. Hearing your input now is interesting both as just a good review of the episodes in and of itself, and it is also fun for me because at the time these shows originally aired, I loved them all equally and uncondtionally with the hubris and "blank slateness" of youth. Now, when I rewatch them, I find some of them have aged well and some, obviously, haven't, so it is *VERY* interesting for me personally to hear you disect the why of that. And I would love to hear you go on and do that for the rest of the series. Either way, though, thanks for your insights on the first two seasons! But seriously, I was wondering if you ever decide to do a breakdown of the Pakled, would you consider doing a cross channel project. I know my tiny channel isn't on the same level as you, but it would mean a lot. You do such high quality dives into the biology of the species you examine, and I tend to stay within the cultural study along with production and social reasons for some choices. I'm looking over TNG for the first time now. I've never more than spot-watched TNG / DS9 since either series released. - Over the years I've read, or heard about the bts controversies (which sound as insufferably petty as most of the shows writing).
What baffles me most though, is how the producer / showrunners never seemed to realise the problem with TNG *is* Frakes. - best anecdote I can come up with being: "Johnathan Frakes does his only acting off camera, I dunno who Riker is". - Where this crystalised for me, was the two parter "Chain of Command" a few seasons on. Notable for being a well written story arc, with one of the best scenes in the entire 7 season series.
Stewart does a lot of talking, its almost neurotic, but otherwise Picards sole purpose seems to be Rikers enabler. - The writing literally never gets better until the end of S6, and thats despite Ronald D Moores name appearing in the S3 credits onwards.
In TOS the basic concept of the Star Trek future is that, humanity had become quite comfortable moderating its morality, having finally achieved a strong ethical society that, had eluded it with horrible consequences, for nearly 3000yrs. Thus when theres an absence of morality, its called up; and when theres too much, the emotional levels are brought back down to something sensible people can comune on.
There is none of that in Jeri Taylors writing, nor Vulcans, whom are meant to be so important to Starfleet, with their IDIC; throughout the entire series. Its obvious she wasn't able to grasp the nuances set out in TOS, and instead copped out to endless streams of emotional baggage, she tries to present as somehow oblique, when what it really is, is opaque. Instead of humanity being just another race in a galactic free for all; Starfleet represents the enforcement arm of an Earth hegemony. Which we know from personal history *never works*, nor is it even remotely ethical. Taylors main claim to fame, seems to be a noun change to the series moto; from 'man' to 'one'. 😆
The concept of holding a bunch of peoples under the noose you hang over their heads, for very long, is extremely unethical. Add to that, if the people of the gov't that was doing this, could agree thats what what their gov't is doing, theres no way they'd ever support it; because we all know the only thing it does is make everyone hate, and wanna kill you. - Seriously, the difference between TNG Starfleet, and the Terran Empire, is the TE won't bore you to death before its open season.
TOS gave you a sense of optimism and hope. TNG & DS9 make you wanna gouge your eyes out. In all honesty, take a leaf outta the 89% of the TOS audience, and miss these series. Star Trek doesn't pick up again until Voyager & Enterprise. - If gouging out your eyes is your thing? You can get an updated reason via S3 & 4 of Disco, along with S2 of Picard.
