Thank You for sharing your story.
I have chronic illnesses, & find it difficult to keep my space clean. When you said people assume a hoarder is lazy and dirty, it reminded me of a conversation I was part of. These 2 or 3 ladies were saying a messy house is pure laziness, 'there's no excuse & their children have to live in that mess'. I pointed out to them that some people can't physically keep their house 'in order'. They still said that its lazy. I started thinking about my space, & how I wish I could keep it tidy.
Some people who don't experience bad health, don't seem to want to understand how much we want to have a tidy home, but simply can't without help.

OH MY GOODNESS, you are preaching to the choir!!! my whole house went down the toilet when I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue and arthritis!!! NO!!! I am not a LAZY person, quite the opposite, a perfectionist, but, when I became unable to manage my home, my world fell apart underneath me!!! thankfully I have found help and am making some headway! slowly but surely!!!

You just triggered a memory in me. I would surround myself with things as a child to feel safe. I would pile laundry or plushies on my bed and sleep in the middle of the mounds. I'm not a hoarder but maybe I could have been if I would have had access to more things as a child. We were dirt poor. You are so sweet and have came a long way. Super proud of you!!🥰

Thank you so much - this video made a huge difference in understanding my husband's problem - it was when you pulled your hands in describing how you would hold on to your things, I realized their was a difference between "keeping stuff" and "holding on" . He passed away a year and a half ago and after an initial dumpster removal of obvious trash we're slowly and respectfully finding homes for or donating the useful items. He kept most everything in the garage but had started bringing stuff into the house when he passed. Now I understand it wasn't just "stuff" to him, and even though he's gone it still feels good to better understand.

  • @ciaraskeleton
    @ciaraskeleton ปีที่แล้ว +1

Im a hoarder! I built up mess, things, dust, notebooks, everything to keep me safe. I have ptsd from DV and Autism, and i really did build up a wall around myself to keep me safe and keep people out.
I used to legitimately miss it when i was out, missing my mess and wanting nothing more than to go in and sit in it surrounded by MY stuff. I didnt know what i was doing was hoarding, i didnt understand why i was doing what i was doing, i was just doing what i could to survive.
After lots of hard work, and i mean..these last few months have been some of the hardest times of my life. I woke up one day and seen the mess for what it was. I phoned cleaners who specialised in hoarding and trauma cleaning and tomorrow theyre coming to get rid of everything except my bed and electricals. I packed a small suitcase and put some books in a box, the rest is getting dumped. I now focus on having as few items as humanely possible.
Items will always hold extra value to me. I will always find comfort in my own mess in a way. I hope to find ways now to have that but not have it be my entire life.
The best advice i could give is, when youre ready, if possible, have someone else throw out your stuff. Not family, not a friend, but someone you have 0 emotional attachment to. There are lots of cleaners who specialise in hoarding and they understand how difficult and sensitive it is.
I picked out a few clothes, my instruments, some books, family photos and the rest is being dumped. If i havent used it in a month, i wont miss it. Im not going to be present while they dump my stuff because i cant bear it, but i truly cant wait until its gone.

Melanie, I am moved, you HAVE humanized hoarding and I think my reflex response may now be compassion instead of bewilderment or judgment. It also helps me to have more compassion for my own areas for improvement. I loved hearing about JOLT (just one little thing) - so wise and forward-thinking - I love the idea of a jolt of success for the day, hoarder or not.

Thank you so much for this! My husband suffers from Hoarding and it is driving me crazy!!! I cannot have my family come over, we cannot have his daughter, son-in-law and grandson come over for a visit and I would never invite any friends into the house since he has it stacked so full...which was all triggered by his mom passing away. This helped me so much to understanding him a little better and when he comes home from work this evening, I am going to have him watch this as well since I really think it will help. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this amazing video!!!

You can do it! It starts with the desire to make a better space & life for yourself. If you have the desire, then you're ready. It doesn't mean it won't be difficult, because it will. But you will be able to address WHY you hoard so that you can change your thoughts & actions. Melanie is SO GOOD at explaining her thought processes as she goes through her things. If you haven't seen many of her videos, start at the beginning. You'll be amazed at how far she has come by taking small sections at a time. YOU can do this, too! This community (A Hoarders Heart channel) is an excellent cheering section for you & all the rest of us who lift each other up & encourage one another!

I lived with my husband, a Bi-Polar Hoarder for almost 50 years until he passed away. He collected records, books, sheet music, tapes,
anything that has to do with music and media. Our house was filled, plus we had 3 or 4 storage units. He would sell this stuff at flea markets and that was his excuse for buying more.
When he died of course I was heartbroken., but I was like a relief to me. No more clutter, no more embarrassment when someone came over. It was a living hell. My kitchen, bedroom, bathrooms, garage, every space has boxes an boxes of stuff.

I've gone back and forth from minimalism to becoming more of a hoarder. I currently have a mountain of stuff (and a hill lol) next to my bed, where a nightstand could be. I got overwhelmed with trying to remember what I had and also what should be decluttered/sold, and it all became a comfort thing. Definitely have been working on how I feel and why. Excellent video! It is true that no one without a history of anxiety, depression and hoarding disorder can understand what it's rooted in and feels like. I have spent my life struggling with the exact same dynamics and root causes and self-comfort reactions that she is describing. Nothing makes me happier than, say, going on a trip and staying in a minimally furnished motel room where I'm not suffocating in mountains of crap. But when I get home and return to the triggers that affect my issues and disorder, I'm paralyzed again. I just recently retired and am determined not live out the last 20-30 years of my life like this, so I'm trying to heal my own disorder like she is. It's actually not so hard if you've already been in therapy. It's pretty easy to know how a therapist would guide you based on ample experience. But therapy alone does not fix the problem because you have to actually do the hard part -- the work! -- yourself. Anyway, so glad she's doing this, and doing such an excellent job of it.

Wonderful explanation for those who don’t understand.
Listening to you here- I heard several relatable beginnings ~ of my collection(s)
    I’ve had anxiety since childhood.
    My collections have collections too🤷🏼‍♀️
My parents were actually art and many other thing collectors.
    So that’s what I knew.
Auction etc… Multiples of beautiful things.
Married an antique dealer (now we can call it stock🤦🏼‍♀️)
Now, I’m Swedish Death Cleaning mixed with Marie Kondo’s joy~
    My version.
In a way that doesn’t make me anxious or upset. Inspired by you, in my own time.
    Everything has memories and stories
My first collection started at age 6- but curated .
Violets, from a smocked dress from my grandmother:
(Who I loved desperately and lost traumatically at 6.5)
    All thing’s violets 💜
I still have my best pieces and 56 years worth of collecting to a
    higher quality level….
My room of my pretty things that brought me comfort. Still to this day….
Vintage clothing including things back to my great grandmothers…
plus European treasures from my time there. Cases of vintage dishes
    Art hung floor to ceiling.
I had much larger homes. All of my things were displayed and used.
    That’s no longer my life.
I adjusting all that now with a manageable 1100 Sq feet.
I had storage rooms - that I just brought it ALL to my home to deal with once and for all.
Everything including clothes is all in that 1100 Sq foot space.
All extremely neatly in 40 gallon containers; sorted by type and color.
But ~ 7 feet high, 15 feet long and 8 ft deep of vintage art glass.
I’m eating “my elephant” ~ one bite at a time.
My collections are now a hoard, if I don’t move them on….
    Jokingly: I call this stuff my;
    Bodega in my basement.
    Antique store on main and
    Department store upstairs .
    Love your channel

You are such an inspiration. You are bringing hoarding out into the open and attaching thoughts and feelings to it.
I have hoarding tendencies and my mum is a hoarder due to hiding our feelings of loss,
Thank you so much for all you are doing.

You are so brave to be able to talk so openly. You've come a long way since I've found your channel, almost or a bit more than 2yrs ago. I remember you first showing your face to us! And I am so, so proud of your strength! And happy you can do, what you wanted to do! You have no idea, how much you are helping out, speaking and encouraging, and showing it is possible to heal! And btw-I just realize, I really admire how you can speak. You have a great way of talking and explaining. Always enjoyed it, but only recently realized how good you are at putting it all into words and with a very nice voice. Keep rocking, Mrs Heart!!💜🦄✨

I thank you for sharing ur story with us all. You're journey has helped me on my own. I used to have such a hard time getting rid of stuff when I was younger. I convinced myself as I got older it had tapered off but that wasnt the case. I do have ocd and anxiety and ur channel really helps me in my adult years. I got rid of so many clothes that I had kept since high school because I couldnt bare to part with them and ur channel helped me realize that it hadnt tapered off that I had just gotten used to doing it and i didnt see a problem with it..but as a wife and a mother now...I knew that had to change and you helped me do that. I got rid of over half of all my clothes keeping only what I wear. I was able to declutter my sons clothes as well keeping only the outfit that i brought him home from the hospital in. I feel so much happier with myself and with life in general. You are truly an amazing person and an inspiration to so many!

You are such a hero! I’m new to your channel. I grew up in a hoarded house. My mom was a hoarder until her death. I joke that I’m one foot not in hoarding with the other foot on a banana peel…I’m just one more major catastrophe from slipping into hoarding. It is a daily personal battle that I am waging.
