    I like everything about Ran Sailing: you as a couple and individual, the content of the video, you sincerity, the boat. As a male, i would like to be as calm as Joan(?) in a other life :-)
    Enjoy the homeland and have a good rest, you plenty deserve it.

    I am 50, so for lifting those batteries, I would use a double pulley block on the boom and lift them that way and lower the new ones that way. I weigh 240 pounds (108.8 Kilograms) and I hang from the boom now and then on our 25 foot sailboat. I am sure your boom is stronger than ours. Just how I would do it. You got it done though and that is what counts. We are going to the store after I post this to buy new anti-fouling paint for our sailboat. It has red, but we are doing blue this time. It is sold at some Lowes and Home Depot for about $143 for a gallon or 4 quarts or 1 quart for $34 here in Florida. It is the kind that releases copper.

    I am not a Sailor. It is 45 degrees here today and my wife is away so I am a little lazy and watch your videos today. Some questions please. Why no Radar? Why no Radar reflector, Aluminum boat? What are your electric loads? There are water makers out of Australia that are portable and run off any power you chose. You guys do superb editing and your wife has me enchanted. Best wishes. JB

    You are lucky to have found Antifouling paint without copper. When we were there in 2014 they had nothing for us but it was also hot. Make back has still not recovered from removing 4 4D AGMs. Now we are using 8 Golf cart batteries like you. Would like to go to Lithium but still too pricey. If you meet up with Veda the Indian welder, please say hello from us. Thanks Victor and Judy

    Great video (as usual). We have the same golf cart batteries you installed and have been very pleased though we're not cruising as heavily as you two so our experience may not be the same. There is an inexpensive strap that fits the double holes at the top of those batteries (They gave it to us for free when we bought them.) It certainly makes moving them around much easier, especially if the batteries are tucked into a tight configuration. I believe all the big golf cart battery companies use the same strap so perhaps you can find one in Sweden.

    For 2-3 years you will be more than fine with those batteries. 460 Ah will be and I'm sure is enough for you guys! Nothing like microwaves, washing machines, etc working on inverter here so its just fine. If that is the case I would get AGM... but you are fine. As we know issues with flooded batteries vs AGM... But lets not go into details. Great job! Thumbs up!

    Hi Guys, I've been working my way through your channel from episode 1 onwards. Got up to ep 64 so far and will work my way the rest in the next couple of days. So nice to
    see a normal couple enjoy and sharing the cruising way of life so openly, mistakes and all. Poor shabby gets a bum rap for a lot of things including a capsize which was more Johan's fault than shabby's. :) Really enjoying the channel and the window on the cruising life. Wishing your all the best. Tim.

    Another great vlog, thanks, although I have to say I do share some concerns, as expressed by others below about the security of the hull stands, they should have been transversely chained or tethered together. Changes in temperature between night/day and weather can cause them to ease or shift slightly. Even ground changes over a few days can effect the stands' grip on the hull, caused by hull vibration, particularly with the mast and rigging left in place. It wouldn't take much wind to resonate through the mast. So Johan, I'd call the yard and get them to lash the stands together to be on the safe side. Better to be 'safe than sorry'.

    It's probably way too late to bring this up, but from what little I remember from my classes in materials - you are correct to say that aluminum oxide is a good protectant since it is tougher than elemental aluminum *but* in a salty environment aluminum chloride is produced which is water soluble. Bare aluminum will corrode quickly near the ocean. You will need a paint coating to protect the hull.

    • @svdellajean253
      @svdellajean253 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bill Schnelke Lots of bare aluminum hulls sailing the oceans. Another channel MJ Sailing just decided to go bare aluminum. Might be worth your time to check out that episode. Besides it's a good sailing channel.

    • @defylifeadventure
      @defylifeadventure 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bare aluminium hulls are common throughout Europe even direct from the manufacturer, with no corrosion problems with regards to being unpainted. Check out the French manufacturer Boreal, who only sell bare aluminium boats.

    Notice you're meeting a few Norwegian folks along the way. Well I'm half Norwegian and half Finnish. My grandmothers from both sides shook their heads in dismay as if this is some unholy mix. I've never sailed but been on plenty of fishing boats going up the coast of Alaska . In those days the boats were made of wood which I used joke the wood was logged from my Finnish relatives.
    PS. I have traveled a respectable bit around the world by various means but never by sailing. Perhaps after watching all these videos I will try sailing

    • @evanofelipe
      @evanofelipe 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Marie - They are 'sacrificial' anodes directly bolted to the hull, propeller shaft and other isolated metal (in RAN's case, aluminium) parts of the hull. Their purpose is to 'attract or concentrate' corrosive reactive forces to their zinc construction and therefore limit or reduce corrosion that otherwise would occur to the hull and other less accessible metal parts of the boat exposed to salt water. Corrosion is the product of electrolysis, similar to process occurring in a lead acid battery, although in the case of a boat immersed in sea water the voltage is much lower. The anodes readily corrode and should be regularly replaced when the zinc has degraded. Failure to replace depleted anodes will do untold damage to the aluminium hull. Its essential that all boats and engines built with differing metals and exposed to water are fitted with zinc anodes to prevent internal damage. They degrade to ensure that the hull and other metal parts don't, hence are called 'sacrificial anodes'.

Happy sailing
