Bad idea for a couple reasons. First the driving mechanism in your weedeater is not gonna be strong enough for that to last - which in reality is a good thing because if it ever did last for any length of time eventually those chains will fail and when they do they will potentially do a lot of damage to whatever they hit - including you or your neighbor. Having a really light string addresses that by not being able to store much kinetic energy. Cool idea, but I'd chalk it up to experience before someone gets hurt.

They had something like that over here in the states but it was discontinued many years ago. I've been wanting to do one but use chainsaw chain. Mainly to be light and thin. It makes clearing fence rows quick.

Пробовал, тримеру тяжело, разбивает нижний редуктор, да и после пары хороших ударов о камни её гнёт и появляется сильная вибрация. Из всего что пробовал лучший вариант это сегменты прикученные к трмерному диску, но опять же они работают только на большой жёсткой траве, для мелкой и мягкой лучше использовать леску
That rotating shaft will soon be wobbling because the chain can't flex up and down, causing bushing or bearing failure. Still a great idea, just have to figure what alternative can be used as the "blades"...

You can also replace the nylon trimmer cord with 'bull wire'... galvanized steel wire. One piece lasts all season!
if your center plate was the same thickness as the chain you could have drilled a hole thru and connected the chain with a master link. still dont know how much id trust it but be a hell of a lot stronger than that tiny machine screw

It turned out nice... but I think that if you use a chainsaw chain that already has a cut, it is thinner and lighter, the tool should be even better! Make one and post a video for us to see...
I can't read 90% of the comments but I'm guessing they say "RUN!! RUN AWAY FAST!!!" Your putting a lot of faith in 2 - 5/32 in. maybe grade 2 machine screws with no supporting top plate. If I were to attempt building such a dangerous contraption, I would use a second plate on top and hardened steel dowel pins. Hmmmm... me thinks it's time to head for the work shop. Heck, feet are over rated anyway. j/k

You ought to design machines for every day use.....to make our lives easier and most of all bypassing costly ADDED encrumbrances-inpediments....just so to enrich $$$ those who.....unethically make it complicated & costly!!! It's also a brilliant way to shred your legs when the chain or the machine fails because it can't take such a heavy cutting piece for long
Please use two plates , one top and one bottom to strengthen and balance .... Weld the chain on or at least use high tensile M4 bolts ! You Will lose your shins or blind a bystander if not .....great vid though mate 👍
I did this works great I tried 4 chains but they are to close together the weeds don’t feed in to well so I dropped down to just 2 chains works really well

You can get blades for these, and they are far safer than a chain.

Нужно что бы каждая цепь крепилась к диску обоими концами. Цепь одновременно не оторвется с двух точек крепления, одно да и уцелеет.
Did you try to make this as heavy as humanly possible? Chainsaw chain is much lighter, thinner and sharper. Halfway through and im gurssing your unit wont have enough torque to last more than 5 minutes.

I had the same idea since it was more durable than the regular trimmer wire but since you said it failed I wouldn't try it due to safety reasons and bits of copper flying around
I did that with two pieces of chainsaw chain, turned them so the cutting teeth were spinning in the right direction, used it to cut through BlackBerry briars. Worked great, but the hazard meter was pegged out the whole time I ran it.
Works great. But use hardenbolt an check for wear regularly. Im going to make one so what if chain came off I wear heavy steel boot any way.

Metal wire used for fence is better than the chain. Done tried both several years ago. But both will tear tree up or a brick in a wall or foundation. So be careful with both. I went back to weed eater line.

Im strongly against this because I went to a little girl s funeral her father was weed eating the little girl was playing on her swing set the chain the link came off struck her in the temple killing her instantly please never use it around children it's very dangerous when a piece of that chain comes lose please don't trust it around any one you should wear a safety helmet if you're going mess with it im like most people trying to improve things but once it shows you a simple accident can kill a child setting outside playing while you're gaining a little time on the chain when it takes a little young child's life im sorry but im not in that big of a hurry I would rather buy the flimsy plastic and keep changing it out a thousand times than to see a family carrying a casket to a grave with there little love one in it sorry to put this out but I must try and warn of this dangerous situation

The only thing that prevents this from being a lot more dangerous is that the motor is only spinning at a fraction of its normal speed.
The motor will burn out soon as you've loaded it with a hundred or more times the normal mass.
You need a bigger motor.

Cheap mild steel bolts to attach the chain and not a unlock nut in sight. The weight of the chain is far in excess of what the trimmer was intended to drive. This is not going to end well.
