Got to be honest, for $60 the case alone is worth it if you ask me. Those Lian-Li cases were the thing to have in the early 2000s and they still hold up so well today. Some of the best build quality of all time.

I love the older cases with three or more 5.25" drive bays. If you are making a sleeper build with modern components that will of course create a lot of heat there are people on sites like Etsy making brackets with their 3-D printers to swap out the optical drives and mount 120 mm fans in them instead. Great video.

$60 for a beast of a custom build from the late 2000s? That's actually a pretty solid deal. Makes me miss my old build from 2005 haha. And yeah, those Lian Li cases were awesome. In that time period, Lian Li and Antec made some of the coolest cases.

What I recommend to do with the graphics card is to slit the sticker open to expose the fan bearings and put a little lubricant on it but if you have a replacement then that could work to.

I've seen some people sell stuff from 2017 and newer for literally under $100 depending on who it is. Most have the money to upgrade and then just sell their older stuff at a lower cost. Helps us people on budgets to build a great system from used parts. Haha

  • @walterlegere1403

Just got an old VPR-Matrix Pentium 4 tower system made back in 2001 for $15. It had a bad power supply. Popped a replacement in and it worked perfectly. The case is in pristine condition so I built a sleeper PC out of it but managed to do it with no major case mods at all! It came with the original IDE CD-RW drive as well as a DVD-ROM. I converted the DVD drive to a mounting housing for a 1TB SATA SSD so on the outside the system looks completely stock original. I really enjoy building modern systems into old cases. Plus, I've still got all the original working hardware that was in it originally so I can convert it back if I want to.

That's one big cooler and I think the metal parts on the motherboard box is for the mounting kit for AMD processor (probably AMD Athlon II), and probably if you can get proper mounting kit, it can be used for newer processor (Intel Core i series and AMD Ryzen) and you can replace the cooling fan with newer PWM 120 mm fan (you can get the silent ones or louder high pressure fans, or you can get the PWM fan with RGB LED as well), and the casing is nice too, it even have removable motherboard tray, so you can install the motherboard outside the computer case on the motherboard tray, and the hard disk tray is also removable, but unfortunately, if you have big modern GPU card, the hard disk cage might get in the way

This "time machine" looks like it ha been build with some love (and money, of course😂)! Those copper pipes around the cpu socket and the chipset are quite rare but they kinda reveal that the mainboard might even be some "high end" of its time, right!?
Side note: if I have some PC on the bench (for whatever reason) I check the PSU first with a PSU Tester. And I always take out the mainboard to change coolers etc. Much easier and less cuts 😂

Once the computer has been well cleaned and restored to working order, then upgrading the ram., to 8 gig., and installing an ssd., and a Linux OS., such as Linux Mint Mate will really improve the performance of that computer.

Bought a PC from an old friend it was ex PC Specialist a leading PC company in the UK, it was worth a lot when new and he just sunk 2000 into another in 2020 at the height of the PC boom, it had a 2060 super which was worth 500 on it's own and 6700k, got the whole rig for 250, and it had the same issue, turn on then off, then would turn on and stay on, could never get to the bottom of it but seeing this backs up my theory now, but like you have shown it's trial and error, take away part then another to you isolate the issue.

short on one of the parts. system turns on, tries to post, trips SCP, shuts off to prevent damage.
the other power supply probably failed due to poor SCP implementation.

I have a Dell optiplex 3050 mid tower and I’m gonna get a power color rx 550 off of amazon. I have an i5 7500 inside. Is this a good choice for a gpu?

    • @GTORazor
      @GTORazor 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

An RX550 isn't bad but a GTX 1660 is better and so is a RTX 3060. I have an Optiplex 3050 with i7-7700 and it plays everything I can throw at it. I do have to tweak settings to get amazing framerates though. Starfield is a good example of tweaking video settings. The RX550 4Gb is a lil underpowered for most AAA titles these days. The 550 isn't a bad start though for its price. For about $100 more you can get a 1660. If you are using the stock PSU though the best bet is the RX550 4Gb since it works off of PCI-E slot power.

I could see why no one wanted the PC although the Core 2 Quad with an appropriate GPU and RAM isn't a bad gaming PC. Obviously, 4 GB RAM isn't going to be enough to run modern games and even 8 GB won't be enough to handle games that need 16 GB, but a lot of 7th Gen (PS3/Xbox 360 era) games will work fine on 4 GB RAM.
One thing to note for anyone using an old Core 2 gaming PC, some later games like Assassin's Creed 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Bioshock Infinite, and Saints Row IV require Windows Vista, so they would not run on XP. Likewise, many games from 2014+ are 64-bit only and/or DX 11 which likely won't work on Windows XP even with Professional x64 Edition.
A downside of old gaming PCs is getting games since Steam dropped Windows XP and Vista long ago and recently dropped Windows 7 and 8, and the same applies to Origin and uPlay. Likewise, most games around the late 2000s/early 2010s required activation, so I don't think getting it on DVD will help. There is, however, a workaround that could allow Steam to be installed on Windows XP. Despite this, you can still play disc games that are DRM free (i.e., don't require Steam) such as The Sims 2 and The Sims Stories, and games downloaded from GOG will work if the original game was compatible with Windows XP. Also, some Steam games are DRM-free although this isn't advertised.
