    Beautiful restoration of a classic vintage Gucci tote! I know some people may think that spending approximately $1,000 to repair and restore a handbag is ridiculous and the customer could have just bought a new bag, but I disagree. New leather Gucci totes are $2,000.00+ dollars and they are not currently making this classic style with iconic bamboo handles. Additionally newer designer bags seem to be using lower quality components compared to the beautiful leathers and detailing of older bags. The owner has obviously used the bag for many years and knows that it functions well for their life and style. There might even be a sentimental attachment to memories associated with the bag. It is wonderful to watch you bring back to life something that could have been tossed out in the trash. Thanks for sharing the process with us and reminding me to go condition the leather of my favorite handbags, belts and shoes.🥰

      Do those bamboo handles hold up? I worry they wouldn't be as strong as the leather.

    • @SEFenno

      Callie Masters, yes Gucci bamboo handles hold up really well. Much better than leather handles that can show dirt and can thin out over time. Wood handles are less common and not for everyone, but I personally love them.

      That's the CRITICAL point; the client got better quality than can currently be sourced and spent less too boot. It's very hard to argue with a win/win situation. If your bank balance can stand the "hit", give Steve your work. "You get what you pay for."

      Very true; you can tell when you're no longer poor when you can finally afford to buy something that can be fixed instead of disposed of and replaced. All of my summers in college but the last I worked labor jobs requiring work boots. I think I went through two or three pair a summer! My final summer of college before I got my internship I was able to afford good boots, I still own and use them today nearly three decades later.

    • @nathandkreosote9917
      @nathandkreosote9917 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What can be repaired and what can't is always based on the craftsman doing the repair. My SOG backpack is 5 years old and has been repaired maybe 4 times, because I know how to fix a seam and sew up a tear. Considering I bought the thing for $20 I wouldn't call it luxury. The knowledge of the craftsman is more important than the item thats being repaired.

      @@nathandkreosote9917 well, yes and no. if you buy lets say a bag from forever 21 or zara or h&m no matter how much you try to repair it, the thing will disintegrate. no craftsman/woman can make up for shitty materials

      @nathandkreosote9917 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bowtiesandcigarettes Shitty materials can be made into a competent product when the craftsperson knows what they're doing. But, shitty construction methods will always yield a poor product even with the best of materials.

    Cutting into bags is like breaking the eggs that you need to make an omelette: Yeah, it looks nasty at first, but the end results are more than worth the effort.
    My best friend's dad was an upholsterer, and I saw him disassemble what to me were beautiful pieces of furniture. When he'd finished, the results were much better than what he'd started with. Just gotta' grit your teeth and bite down on the bullet. EXCELLENT JOB, Steve!

My Niece had a almost new Nike's whos top and bottom came apart from each other, making it a kinda weird looking flip flop. But I was there with my shoe glue, glued and pressed them overnight. Now happy Niece. That bag was total class act, worth the repair. Seems like if you knew enough about leather and sewing, you could just make one, sure it would be a Knock Off. But you would only make one, and give it to the women you love. Probably cost alot just for the nice leather. Beyond me.

      @Higher Awareness33 I agree with the thinking that Steve and Tom are "cut from very similar pieces of cloth". Quality workmanship will never be out of fashion. How long would a wood and leather chair they collaborated in building last? Centuries is my estimate.

    I think this might be your best bag repair I've seen. To be honest, in one of the previous ones my OCD felt like you might have rushed the stitching a bit but this one turned out awesome!

    So I just bought 2 of the bamboo handle Gucci bags that need exactly this restoration. I’m afraid I cannot even approach paying that restoration fee, but it looks so beautiful. I’ll have to stir with scrubbing out the sticky, flaming stuff and conditioning the leather.

    Absolutely stunning work! I have a Gucci bag that I got from my grandpa when I was 12 years old (1980). The inside is doing the same thing. I probably haven’t stored it properly. I’d love your expertise and a quote perhaps on fixing it. It holds a special spot in my heart.

    Great job, Steve! I'm excited to watch when you restore luxury handbags. I like luxury handbags and I started my own collections 3 years ago. I like to watch it when the handbag is in bad shape and you make it beautiful, after restoring it. I didn't know that as bad as how those handbags look, they're still worth restoring.
