  • The Rolex 2135 is, at the start of this video, broken down into its individual components having just come out of the ultrasonic cleaner.

    I took it apart in the first part of the video series on this watch of which this is the second installment.
    The Rolex 2135 movement is 'pretty small' and towards the end of this video I use another larger watch to help give the viewer an idea of the scale of the Rolex being serviced.
    If you are not in the market for a Rolex at the moment but fancy a nice watch at a very good price then please see my recommendations for current good buys ...

    Please treat down and rebuild an ETA 2836 or 2824,I think so many people would thank you sir, I know I would.I would also like to see a that down and rebuild of any other in house Swiss made movements or a Seiko spring drive out a Seiko high beat Grand Seiko movement. Please please please!!!. Also I'd really like to see a tear down and rebuild of a solar powered watch as I don't know exactly how they work. Please please please!!!.I think every one is probably on the same page as me here. Just no more pocket watches, they are bigger and easier to tear down and rebuild, I like to see you challenge yourself. Anyways thanks for all the great content I'm so glad I found your channel. Your my favorite you tube channel as if right now. Thanks brother! Cheers!.

      Hi Jason .... The watches you mention would all make good videos and I will be getting around to Grand Seiko soon as I have massive respect for this brand. Maybe not all pocket watches are easy (relative term) ... some have pretty complicated movements ... I shall hopefully soon be moving on to video the servicing of minute repeaters and chronograph pocket watches as well as a good few more Rolex. Thanks again for the feedback Jason! Richard

    A treat as usual, thank you. Reassuring to hear you talking about that peculiar feeling of having lost one's sense of scale. This week I've been playing about with a movement of similar size (much less impressive pedigree, though), and when I come up for air it's amazing how tiny the thing really is. A case of developing tunnel vision, I suppose.

    • @richardperrettwatchmaker
      @richardperrettwatchmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      'Coming up for air' and 'tunnel vision' are definitely apt phrases for this work. The optics allow us to enter a tiny little world which seems much bigger whilst we are in it. Thanks for the feedback GenWivern2 and good to know you are working on challenging stuff. Richard

      @GenWivern2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richardperrettwatchmaker I was careful to avoid referring to my activities as "work"! It's an excellent self-imposed challenge which plays to some of my strengths, but the idea of gazing into that tunnel for a full working day is another matter entirely. Do you never find yourself hoping that someone will bring you a nice a big railway clock for the sake of variety? :-)

    Oh No! Not a Star Trek fan? Nice job!, even more amazing how in Thomas Earnshaws time they not only cut the gear wheels by hand but the screws as well ! I will save the Komandirskie video for tomorrow night, I have the Commandant version, terrible outside finish but works very well.

      Hi Phil ... I have a 19th Century fusee watch which is 'awaiting labour' as I need to make a new screw for the balance cock. I just looked at the Thomas Earnshaw site. These are all chinese I figure but I do kind of like the 'Officer' with the white dial. Richard

    Thanks for posting this. I’m getting ready to service one and this video is ver helpful. Interesting that you didn’t remove the canon pinion or the cap jewels. I probably will anyway. I think it’s a good practice as I’ve found plenty of gunk still on the cap jewel even after running the movement through a three stage watch cleaning machine.

    Hi again Richard. Thanks for a most interesting reassembly of the Ladies Rolex. Those components must be sooooo tiny and hard to work with. A question if I may...Where did you learn your trade? Is there a special school for watchmakers or how does it work?
    I have only recently started a collection of watches so knows very little, but I must say I would be more than happy for you to work on any of my watches.
    Keep it up man, and as you say....a man has to eat...Cherio from SA

      Hi Ronnie ... I am self taught. I was a soldier for twenty years and am now a retired soldier full time watchmaker. I learnt from books and ironically from TH-cam, but most of all i learnt from daily practice, for five years!

    I have recently found your videos and like them a lot....I have never seen the lower escape wheel jewel lubricated from the plate side ....I see that there is a shock jewel on the dial side ..

    Amazing Video fascinating infact. Question are movements like Rolex easier to work on because of the precision of a superior movement compared than say a Seiko for example ?

    • @richardperrettwatchmaker
      @richardperrettwatchmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Darren ... not really although the chance of anything needing any force to seat in, as happens occassionally with a very slightly misaligned bridge for example, is zero. If you are forcing anything you are doing it wrong! Thankfully Seiko movements are very similar to work on .... I spent two and a half years breaking seiko movements whilst I was self training. Eventually your error rate will reduce to almost zero and then you can start to work on more valuable movements ... a mistake with a seiko normally costs between £8 and £40 to put right in replacementment parts. Rolex mistakes would be 10 to 20 times that amount ... even if you can get the parts.

    I am not a watch maker but I'm mesmerizing the work of yours. It is so intrigued to see how u put every tiny parts in place. May I know what is the back case size screw for the 26mm lady datejust watch?

    Hello! One questions does this movement change the date automatically at 00:00 or does it take a couple of hours to jump and change the number. Thank you!

    • @richardperrettwatchmaker
      @richardperrettwatchmaker  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi... The date will start to move at around 23.40 and click into place between 23.58 and 00.02 provided that the movement is correctly calibrated. Hope this is helpful. Richard

    Hi Richard brilliant strip down rebuild of a lovely Rolex. I have 2 I'm working on a 2135 with a busted setting spring and 2320 with a busted click spring. where can I get the parts as they are restricted at Cousins?
    The Lancashire pocket watch you showed I have one from about the same year. I would love to get the full history of it. I'll share the number with you shortly and see if you can shed some light on it.

    Obvious to me now, that you can only justify this amount of labour on an expensive watch. Watchmaker skills can only be used when the maintenance cost is relatively reasonable to the value of the watch. I can't see work done ever on a €50 or even €200 movement. You simply put a new movement in, or buy a complete new watch. So the question is, when a €50 movement (for example a NH35A) needs an overhaul, how expensive will a swap with a new NH35A cost? Is it worth the value of the watch? Can you do it yourself may be?

    • @richardperrettwatchmaker
      @richardperrettwatchmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rene ... swapping out a movement would cost about £40 plus the cost of the new movement were I to do it. Doing it yourself is an option but there are risks (mainly that you damage the more delicate parts of the movement whilst handling it) and the tools necessary ( Case holder, case opener, hand levers, precision screwdrivers together will cost in excess of the £40. ) Nice to hear from you. Richard

    • @renebense
      @renebense 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      £ 40,- sounds very reasonable. Doing it yourself is too risky is my diagnose. Watching the video is very relaxing. Watching a watchmaker makes you realise it would be 100 % impossible to end up with a watch that will ever tell me the time again. Now imagine a blind watchmaker with a heap of random parts. What is the chance he produces a working watch?..... But that is exactly what modern evolution scientist like to let us believe.... Think about it and you know Dawkins must be wrong. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Blind_Watchmaker
