- After recovering the refrigerant we remove a failed linear compressor, transfer the electrical harness to the new compressor, braze in an access fitting, blow out the condenser and evaporator of the fridge with nitrogen, and then install the new compressor while flowing nitrogen.
Thx LG for designing a 3 year lifespan sealed system. Well done.
Woah 😮.... That's a whole lot of flames in there 😊
Wow really professional and really the only way to do it with this lg crap. But what’s your thoughts on switching to a conventional embraco compressor with some type of relay from fan to switch from dc to ac? Most everyone where from does like this instead of using lhs crappy compressor?
What type of material did you use to join the copper and steel lines ?Thanks!
@@jrvirrueta7168 high flow braze with a 45% silver content and flux
So basically the last weld you make you can't really flow nitrogen?
Thanks for this great video. The tubes that connect to the bottom of the compressor is aluminum. How would I weld the aluminum tube to the compressor?
They are generally made out of steel, you’d want to use flux and 45-50% ag braze. Check the tubes with a magnet. (It’s been a while since I’ve worked on lg’s so I don’t know if any of the brand new models use aluminum tube on the high side so check it before trying to braze it)
Are those linear compressors from LG as bad as they say? I just had one go. Do they only last for a few years?
There is a fact that I want to understand about these LG refrigerators that has linear compressors in them, when these compressors goes bad,is it compulsory to replace these compressors with linear compressors or another brand will still work.
Today when the technician replaced thre compressor for our refrigerator he left the fixation screws (or bolts) very loosen. Is it ok like that or it most be fasten very well?
Why is flux Being used? 15% rod is all you need to avoid clogging up that drier. Has this process changed now?
Typically the high side connection to the compressor and the Yoder loop connection to the filter drier are steel to copper. I use a 45% ag brazing rod for those and you should use flux for that. I’ve brazed it with 15% before but you get much cleaner results with the high flow.
@@steveb5967 Okay great thanks for the update also where can I buy that nitrogen adapter adapter ? That will help my life tremendously
With the reverse flow valve in the netrual position I should be able to get flow just as if it were a single evap unit, right?
can you tell me how it’s called and where I can buy the valve use after 6:20 with the nitrogen?
The stub that attatches to the system is a Robinair process adapter kit, I’ve gotten off of Amazon usually www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C2GWNP0/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00C2GWNP0&linkCode=as2&tag=sbretztech-20&linkId=f0e342ecf545955d83966cd847a7faba

what torch is that you're using?
The failure rate of linear compressor is more or same as Rotary compressor?
Hard to say honestly, the ge rotary compressors were before my time. Does seem like lg is sticking to this design though, as I understand it ge got away from the rotary design pretty quickly..
Could you please list all the materials used in the video, for instance the type of Brazing Rods. Did you use the same type of brazing rod for all your connections? If the liquid line going to the Condenser from the Compressor is not copper, what type of brazing rod do you use to braze copper and another metal.
15% ag brazing rod for copper to copper, 45% ag high flow with flux for the copper to steel. Most condenser lines are steel.
@@steveb5967 Excellent........Thanks !!!
Thank you for this video. I am watching it because my LG fridge might be needing a second compressor replacement and the repair man will be arriving shortly. Wouldn't it be easier by joining the connections with the compressor outside the compartment, then placing it inside when the joining is complete?
It's not possible. The lines don't stretch.
Good job,how much should they charge for this?
$1000 to $1200 if they use factory OEM and update the software.
I liked Braze machine kit from where I can buyit
I've got an LG fridge where after replacing a compressor the fridge still fails to get cold, any ideas on what might have happened?
Without putting gauges on to diagnose it there’s too many possibilities to list, but if the compressor is running then the most likely possibilities are a restriction or clog that was either preexisting or occurred during the repair, or possibly a leak.
@@steveb5967 the compressor is not running and it’s a brand new compressor that’s the problem we aren’t sure what’s wrong
@@esmeman0383 if you press the test button on the back does it try to run? If it doesn’t check the plug going to the compressor for voltage.. it usually only connects to 2 pins of the 3 on the compressor. Check to make sure it’s turned to the correct pins…. You can check them on the compressor with a multimeter for resistance. The third pin will either not be connected to anything, or will be grounded.. it’s easy to get the plug turned the wrong way.
@@steveb5967 I’ll take a look thanks
What's the name of the tool you use at 6:19?
Those are Robinair process adapters.
very nice work brother. what type of torch are you using and where can I get one?
It’s a smith quickbraze torch kit, much smaller than a standard oxy acetylene torch, however it’s bigger than a jewlers torch. I’ve found it on Amazon, otherwise gotta try and find it at a wielding supply store.
Hi
Where did you buy access fitting tool for nitrogen tank?
You can find it on Amazon.. otherwise I’d search Robinairs part number for it and see if it’s available elsewhere for less. www.amazon.com/Robinair-12458-Process-Tube-Adapter/dp/B00C2GWNP0/ref=mp_s_a_1_20?crid=3AC5R4DM1KX7C&keywords=robinair+access+fitting&qid=1678111406&sprefix=robinair+acess+fitting%2Caps%2C355&sr=8-20&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0
@@steveb5967 Thank you!!
What was the service valve attachment that you used at 6:28 for blowing nitrogen to clear the system?
That’s a Robinair process adapter kit. amzn.to/3qJQ0f4. Useful for adding a temporary connection to blow out tubing, flow nitrogen, or you can put one on both ends of a component that you’ve cut out and pressure test just that component for leaks with nitrogen. The kit has 2 adapters in it.
@@steveb5967 did you use the same kit (Robinair 12458 Process Tube Adapter) to connect the capillary tube 7:24
hi, steve . what is the name of that tool sliver with 4 bar. u use for nitrogen to copper pipe
Robinair 12458 Process Tube Adapter Kit for 3/16", 1/4", 5/16", 3/8" Copper Tubing
Are you in Bay Area? If yes, would you like to help to replace it for me? How much do you charge for labor?
How much do you charge for replacement ?
Where are you located? Are you for hire?
what type of handheld lighter do you use? I use a flint striker but would like to get a piezo electric.
Found that piezo sparker at a weilding supply store near me, it worked well and then started getting squirrely so I went back to normal flint strikers.
Hey Steve what about if your working on a lg with the three way valve. Can I still clear the restriction the same way through the cap tubes since there is a check valve. Instead of having to disconnect each cap tube on the evaps. I can just disconnect the cap tubes from the three way valve and disconnect the suction from the compressor
It depends on how bad the restriction is. First you have to be sure the three way valve is parked in full open by pressing the test mode button to force it to cycle. The check valve will only prevent refrigerant from blowing backwards from the suction line to the cap tube. When you blow through the three way valve open it will force nitrogen through both cap tubes, if the back pressure against the cap tube on they clear evaporator is greater than the pressure it needs to clear the clog then you might luck out and clear it, otherwise you’ll have to debraze the cap tubes and blow them out individually.
hey Steve. I notice that you are using the Robinair attachment on that cap tube what size are the insert on that Robinair?
The kit has 4 different sizes of fittings, I use the smallest one for cap tube then the second smallest for the high side line
Not sure on what the exact dimensions of the inserts are.. generallly you want the one closest in size to whatever your putting it on
What size tip are you using on the smith little torch?
That’s actually not the little torch, they have a slightly larger one called a quickbraze setup that’s specifically meant for tubing. It’s unfortunately more expensive than the little torch but it is pretty much perfect for this kind of work. If you check out the video I did comparing different torches it shows it pretty well with both that single flame tip and a 5 flame tip.
How much would this cost??
Do you mean how much would all the equipment cost to do this? Or how much would this repair cost?
@@steveb5967 like repair total. Like for compressor and putting it on
@@BobbyHilll132 depends a lot on where your at and what company comes out to do it. The parts are around 400$ If your using the factory drier, however a lot of these are under warranty from lg. As for the labor I’ve seen anywhere from 300$ from someone who warranties it till they leave your driveway, up to 800$ in some markets. Where I work we typically charge around 600$ in labor however we warranty the repair for 1 year parts and labor.
How much time u required to replace compressor..
I typically average about 2 hours from getting there to leaving.
I bought a LG lmxs30776 /01 in Dec 2014. Compressor was replaced in 2019 still under a 5 year warranty. Today 9/6/2021 The Frig is not cooling again . So pissed. What piece of crap.
Sorry to hear your going through that. Unfortunately it’s been my experience that the quality of the repair will directly affect how long it lasts, I have seen plenty of occasions where someone installed a new lg compressor carelessly and did not fully vacuum the system dry, or left debris or oil in it and it led to premature failure. I do think if you perform the repair properly it’s a solid repair. I trust my work enough that I have an lg in my kitchen which I got off of Craigslist broken and then repaired.
I don’t like soldering that close to the plastic cond fan
Practice makes perfect. First that torch is very small compared to a turbotorch or a full size victor style torch so the flame is a lot more manageable, I go pretty quick in this video because I’ve done a lot of these, but the direction of the flame and how I’m aiming it at the connection matter a lot, heat will build mostly in the direction the torch is pointed, so thinking through where it’s aimed and what’s behind that is crucial to these kind of repairs, the suction side connection, discharge connection and the cap tube connection to the filter dryer can all be done with the flame parallel to or pointed away from that plastic fan. I’ve got another video where I recommend practicing by brazing scrap tubing in a cardboard box and I find that really helps force you to be aware of where heat builds when you work on these, the cardboard box will burn long before that fan will start to melt.
Can you give me the link for that nitrogen access fitting please?
Did you ever find out where to get it
Sorry you mean the ones that fit onto the fridge tubing? That’s a Robinair access fitting kit. www.amazon.com/Robinair-12458-Process-Tube-Adapter/dp/B00C2GWNP0/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=robinair+process+tube+adapter+kit&qid=1627974048&sprefix=robinair+proce&sr=8-3
Did you have to do some type of software update when replacing a compressor?
Yes, this is the universal compressor and you have to use the lg compressor jig to update to the newest software.
17:17 WARNING!!!! Don't burn the compressor!!
Hard to see from the angle of the video but I don’t have flame aimed at it for any real length of time, also you would have an extremely hard time melting through the casing on that compressor or damaging it with that torch… about the only way I could think of that doesn’t involve many minutes of concentrated heat on the casing would be if you somehow were aiming it at the point where the tubing goes through the casing or at the electrical connection.. inside of that compressor is about a 1 inch gap between the shell and the mechanical assembly as well. Now If this were a whirlpool wisemotion compressor it would be a different story.
E grazie mille lavoro professionale

Good stuff, Thank for sharing.
Is this safe to do inside of the home? Fumes and Refrigerant leaks?
Are you replacing it with the same Problematic Compressor or an updated version that LG Now uses?
Do you use flame Retardant material to protect its surroundings and Flooring?
Also I was told that once this is done a Program update is required to account for Refrigerant inside line and cool properly or something to that notion.
I am in NYC and The reason I ask this is because I need to have mine Done. I have a Friend that used to work on Commercial Sub Zero Refrigerators for LABs but is retired now So he doesn't do the work himself anymore. but did recommend a few people. I prefer to hire an LG approved Company because American Express is Requiring it to foot the bill :o) SO why not? If your in NYC area and are LG approved let me know.
Having a Fridge go down is the worst. luckily for us we have another fridge in the basement and a Freezer in the Garage.
Thanks again for sharing.
As long as reasonable precautions are taken it is safe to do in a home. I typically use a mat to act as a barrier if something hot drips, I don’t use flameproof mats (other than one on the floor) much these days because I’m very used to working in a compressor compartment and I have a very small torch that is designed for tubing and small spaces…. If you are in a high rise you might want to check if they have special restrictions on hot work…. Generally it’s a different updated compressor and it generally requires a software update which is just as important as the compressor. You must remove all the refrigerant from the system and any trace amounts should be removed by the vacuum process before the system is charged. I am nowhere near New York, so I can’t help you with that. I would recommend calling lg customer service to find the closest lg authorized repair company.. then compare the online reviews of the companies they recommend.. it is definitely a bummer when a fridge goes down. Glad to hear you had a way to save the food.
