Do you think that this hints at lego consistently remaking classic sets? I felt with the pirates of barracuda bay and the lion knights castle that they were one-offs. The blacktron cruiser that came out felt like the space equivalent of the forest hide out gift with purchase. But this is a large set to complement the barracuda bay, so maybe these themes are making a bit of a comeback? Furthermore it uses a very similar modular system to the black falcon castle, so maybe there is a long term plan to this
Baseplates are nostalgic, but tend to warp, bend, discolor or crack over time if not cared for very well. You have to be gentle with them and store them well. And honestly, its more satisfying to build the terrain yourself.
Young generation, no nostalgia to those baseplates. I personally also prefer everything brick-build, but I do have the nostalgic feeling for the molded baseplates.
I can see why not having the molded baseplate would be a strike against the aet in your opinion, but I'll point out that being forced to build it instead means you've got more room for the hidden festures, as well as more bricks to be used for other stone structures when the set gets taken apart. Funny you mentioned LEGO jail cells always have an escape route; one of my favorite LEGO sets was a wild west 'bank heist' set. I distinctly remember a technic shock absorber being used to knock down the wall of the jail cell when a dynamite 'brick' was inserted just right. As a child, i thought that was just the coolest thing ever. No doubt this set would be incredible to play with.
The molded base plates were nice back in the day but even as a kid I wished a little that they were brick built. But that's mainly because the sets contained SO few parts.
I was so jealous my older brother had Eldorado Fortress growing up. When we were older he actually let me rebuild it after he moved back to town. This definitely plays on my love for pirates and nostalgia. I need this set.
I enjoy the structural building of terrain, especially natural stuff. The Monkie Kid Flower Fruit Mountain set is probably my top all-time favorite set for this reason. So for someone like me, your one issue would be a benefit!
I want to build a mountain in my layout to place Heavenly Realms on top, and I'm thinking Flower Fruit Mtn would be a good set to integrate into that. Amazon still has new copies for the original price. Glad to hear another landscape building enthusiast endorse Flower Fruit.
@@Nphen I can't recommend it enough. There's a lot of stickers, yes, but the set it just incredible. Excellent details, really cute and fun play features. Honestly, all of the big MK sets are extremely good!
I feel like Lego is going in the direction of making everything out of system bricks, and that's pretty amazing for its simplicity and the amount of detail you can get. I would take a bunch of grey bricks that I can potentially use in other builds, rather than a baseplate that only has one purpose.
Been loving your content, i especially like the fact that you explain every detail in the set and has a nice pov of those details. Your relaxing and slow demeanor really is comforting. I have been following your content for a few months now and i thank you for your utter passion for Lego
I love the way they’ve remade the moulded base plate by building it. It’s a great improvement and a good difference between them both in my opinion. I will definitely be buying this 🙂
I had this set as a kid, feel very lucky as it was amazing. Sold it just before my daughter was born along with all my other Lego, I don’t regret it as the money was handy at the time and it was just sitting in a box in my parents house, but I will be picking this one up for sure and building and playing it with my daughter.
My excitement is unmeasurable, I'm not even a classic pirate fan, but Eldorado fortress was always my favorite of the classics, and I cant wait to get it!
I just have a thing for these remastered old sets. For example I wasn't even born yet when the oldschool castle and space were popular and in production. Nonetheless I picked up the lion knights castle, x2 blacktron cruisers, x2 galaxy explorers, forest hideout, x2 creator 3 in 1 castles (basically the unofficial remake of set 6074 Black falcon Fortress)
I personally LOVE this remade set - rocks and all. IMO the baseplates of old were a cop out and the full piece builds of the newer sets make me just happy. I'll be buying multiple copies of this set.
I agree. Brick built landscapes are always better than those thin, hollow baseplates of old. When you build with brick, you can create caverns and hide Easter eggs. It’s a lot of fun. Give us the bricks!
I wish I was able to grow up with Lego Pirates. I’ve recently started getting into the new Pirates sets a lot, and love the theme. I’m planning on hopefully making a Pirate display soon, and this would be a great addition to it.
I never got any classic pirate or castle sets as a kid but I loved looking at them so can still feel the nostalgia. The terrain building doesn’t bother me as I enjoy building brick work. This is a must buy for sure and I hope Lego can keep this up with reviving Pirates, castle and classic space! A full wave would be even nicer!
0:35 That's a lego Ninjago faceprint from season 6 "Skybound". The chararcer is called Bucko and I'm very happy to see it used again. Definitely one of the best pirate faces imo
It was originally Captain Redbeard's faceprint, created specifically for a 2015 Pirates reboot. And only after that TLG started to use it in other lines & sets.
I still have my El Dorado fortress from back in the day. Loved the pirate line. I do prefer the block terrain versus the molded foundation. Plus all the extra bits and accessories is awesome. The benefit of the block base leads to all the cool tunnels and escape routes not available in the original molded foundation. It’s actually brilliant and a sign that the designers are old school legoheads like myself.
Something feels so refreshing getting to see a simple yet complicated design for the fort. I really like the yellow and white along with the black bricks.
If there were raised baseplates there would be no room to place figures. That not only takes away playability, but also would drive this sets price way up. Instead of spending 200 you would probably be spending close to 300. Just my opinion, but I think building the rocks was kinda fun.
it was my very first lego "true set" when i only had to play with 4 old medieval figs and a bunch of bricks... i loved this set so much... so much memories right now
I'm waiting for someone combining 2 or more of these sets because I do believe that the parts included will be enough for builing true fortress with a proper depth like Lion's Castle and clever connection points.
Thrilled but that monkey is NOT better. Old monkey with moveable limbs was so fun to attach to masts!! He was always the chaos agent when I played with my old el dorado.
While I do think the model achieved what it was going for, I am slightly disappointed that the designers didn't go for more of a reinterpretation. This more faithful remake just doesn't make for a nice display model, in my opinion. And doesn't translate as well as the Lions Knight's Castle.
He means if your complaint is about a lot of repetitive building, then how come your favorite set is the Titanic, which contains a lot of repetitive building (according to him).
As an older person, Ive been buying legos since before minifigs had arms or faces. My age gives me some perspective on the evolution of Lego. Legos today are no longer throw away toys for kids but collectible models for adults typically targeted at those who grew up in the 90s. Sets were available for years instead of discontinuing sets quickly to promote collectability. The baseplates were great for a kids toy providing stability and imagination. No kid wants to spend hours building rocks instead of a fortress. I also have the thought that Lego has been justifying it's insane pricing by unnecessarily boosting it's part count. As an adult model it makes sense but I've never agreed with Legos shift in philosophy so I no longer buy them. Since these high prices are heavily supported by nostalgia from the generations who played with them as kids back when they were affordable and prior to competing interests like computers (during the 80s) it will be interesting to see what happens when those generations die. I don't think the interest is there in current kids to justify current or future increases in prices. But I'll be long dead by then 😂
This was my favourite set as a kid! I’ve been looking to get one off eBay as my mum sold it to the next door neighbour many moons ago😡 The memories! Thanks for the review, torn between this and the old one now :)
one thing that i would do would be to change the heads of one officer and a regular just to have more variety. Its nice that weve got two tricorn/hair pieces though
I wonder if my parents still have my Legos at their house... I used to have the imperial trading post, a black knight castle and several others! I LOVED the medieval and pirate sets!
there are advantages to both.... a large base plate would cost less and let them build a larger castle part, (based on his build testimony there must be 80-100$ of base bricks here) A base should have cost like 20$ extra. but the brick built rocks are better for MOCing two of these together.
Yes. The build is part of the experience. That’s why we build. Otherwise we could buy prebuilt models. If I wanted big build pieces I’d build duplo or playmobile or others.
My Pirate Bay set is still in the box and now I need this one to go with it. I have the last pirate ship, and Queen Anne, and a Mod version of the giant flagship, now I need more space to display them.
I didn't have this particular set, but I did have one that used the same baseplate mold (6082: Fire Breathing Fortress) and I kind of didn't like how limiting it was. While building the rocks and base for this set probably isn't as fun or interesting, it does seem superior in every other way over a baseplate. I think the primary advantage of the baseplate is reducing cost of the set, which is particularly important for ones that are not targeted to 18+.
I am an absolute Lego Pirates fan and Barracuda Bay is my favorite set ever. But this set doesn't do it for me. I understand the choices made but this is too much of a remake. I mean, big nostalgia and all, but Barracuda Bay, the castle and the Galaxy Explorer where full of clever techniques, new interesting pieces and a never seen before layout. This one doesn't offer much more compared to the original aside from the pretty cool modular option. And biggest gripe of mine is a petty one but i dont like that the palmtree leaves are not the same as the ones used in Barracuda Bay. They looks so much better and this set is meant to be paired with the big Pirates set for many people, and the trees are ruining it. Yeah i get it, retro parts pack for Pirates lovers, but still
The el dorado set was my favorite growing up. It came out the year I was born (1991) and my brother got it. My first introduction to legos was this set along with some of the space and nautical sets. I have a son now and I hate how expensive they have become because I want my son to play with legos but I am reluctant to spend that kind of money.
Great set for LEGO to make a remake of! As a child i nearly had all pirate sets except this one. Luckily i've found the blue sloped baseplate of the original Eldorado Fortress in nearly mint condition on a fleemarket for €2,-. I'm yet collection all the remaining pieces but what a struggle, even with bricklink! Very very happy to see that LEGO is making remakes of classic sets this year.
5:00 IDK about you but I *hate* clips and don't trust them at all, I treat them like fine China and they still break. Cool idea but I would be too anxious of having to replace broken bricks to ever really use it.
I hope one day Lego remakes the M-Tron Mega Core Magnetizer 6989 and gives us some updated magnet pieces! One of my all time faves and I still own it fully complete, but I would LOVE if they made a new one!
I wasn't really sure if wanted this set, knowing all the other cools sets coming this year, but your review actually want me to get it now. It looks really cool :D
I'm just happy for the boat. Fun fact, the boat isn't actually an Imperial Navy Ship, rather, it's an Imperial Merchant Ship. Which is kinda odd, as the only other Merchant Ship from the pirates line is actually the vessel this ship was based one, that being the ship from Imperial Trading Post, set 6277. Why is it odd you may ask? Well, all this time we see pirates like Brickbeard, Metalbeard, Redbeard, Iron Hook, Jack Knife, etc., having stolen loot, and Imperials like Governer Broadside trying to retrieve it. But sadly, we usually never get to see just where the pirates got their loot from, and historically speaking, they most likely would've gotten it by raiding Merchant Ships like this one. So the fact that we've only seen two Merchant Ship as of 2023 for the Pirates line seems kinda odd, as there should logically be many more than that, but we simply don't see them. Darn shame. Oh well, I really enjoy this set, and will definitely be picking it up! Rockatoa, Brickticks out!
INCREDIBLY tempting!!! But there’s also a rumoured medieval village coming this year so I can’t decide if I should go with one or the other. It’s so painfully expensive and I’ve been trying to stop spending too much on Lego. 😂😭
Could you please do a building tutorial on the pool table in the Ninjago City Markets as I can’t afford it but really want that amazing design for my custom builds, thank you so much
Honestly, compared to the terrain I'm building in my MOC display, the "baseplate" made here in this set doesn't look as annoying to build. Do you have a Discord or something? Because once I'm done with this display I would like to show it to you.
Price per piece is not a good way of assessing the value of the set (esp. for sets with a ton of small parts); price for the overall VOLUME of stuff is much better so I would recommend using that going forward.
Ok. So I would dump every bag on a container (who needs numbered bags anyways) to get the volume of bricks and then assess the value? I've been hearing that argument a lot but it's flawed. The volume of the cloth sails is near zero for instance and I can assure you, their internal production cost prices are nowhere near zero... Price per piece ratio goes out the window for sets like Dots or Art sets because 90% of the pieces are small round plates. Same with let's say Jurassic Park sets because the moulded dinosaurs are crazy expensive to produce. For "normal" type LEGO sets there's usually a good balance of small parts vs big one that even things out on the PPP ratio. This set in particular, while having that good balance also has 8 minifigures, cloth elements (and I forgot the cannons which must also be expensive to produce) and a lot of big plates and regular bricks used for all of the landscaping. I would argue that the PPP is a great way to assess the brick value of this set.
@@TiagoCatarino as a consumer who pays for the set, the "volume of stuff" I get to play with matters greatly to me. Take the Trafalgar Square set as an example... this was an $80 set of 1,200 parts with "great" PPP of $0.07. But I felt cheated on in the end as I built a great looking but super miniscule model, as vast majority of those parts were tiny plates. Confronted with Hogwarts Clock Tower from the same year - slightly more expensive, 900 parts with PPP at $0.10 yet I feel I get much more of an actual set simply because the overall volume of stuff is so much bigger. Hence my previous argument. Anyway, love your stuff, and your storage tutorial inspired me a great deal and for that I thank you. Two thumbs up, Tiago. Great job you are doing here!
Architecture sets are usually overpriced and like you said, pieces are tiny. That theme kinda fits the same boat of LEGO Art as far as PPP go. Again, for “normal” themes PPP is a good measure of value in my eyes! Duplo, 4+, Technic, Mindstorms, Architecture and Jurassic would be themes that need a deeper look into pricing where the simple PPP ratio doesn’t really make sense. Appreciate the conversation though, and the feedback about the other video! Enjoy :)
@@TiagoCatarino Tiago, appreciate your input. Perhaps worth considering _also_ commenting about "how much LEGO you get for your money" as an additional metric, aside from PPP which many still care about hearing, especially the above or below the magical 10c per piece cost. Cheers and all the best.
I got 5 of the Lion knights castles (still considering to get another 5 - not sure if and when we will be getting anything like it) - this set, although I am not a huge pirate fan, I will get at least 3 of to get an enclosed one with 2 walled sections around it.
70410-1 was my first ever Lego set, and while I may have never gotten any pirates sets after that one, I wanna get that set so I can have another set from that theme (even though 70410-1 came out in 2005 so I'm not an "OG" pirates fan)
I haven't build this yet, but am heavily nostalgic for it. Pirates was always my theme growing up. And yet, I do not love this set either. I think the old one looks better with a healthy mix of bricks and wall panels. You would think building elements from bricks is better, but it makes the fortress look so incredibly clutteree. This is especially visible in the cranetower where two corner elements would have made the whole thing look so much better. To my eyes there is such a thing as too much "detail". Pair this with the modern instructionbooks and you have this weird building experience where you often don't see what you are building and suddenly it's done. I liked the old books where you turned the page and thought "ooh sweet, this is what we're doing next?"
I like the concept of an imperial fortress but not sure I enjoy the design and features. Similar to the A Frame cabin something doesn’t feel quite authentic. Its also not much of an upgrade like Lion Knight Castle was. Might still get this if on sale.
I can see how the baseplate is a minus, but in terms of playability for kids, I guess the modular setup would be a great plus, even if biuilding it might be tedious
I would love to have more large pirate ships (like black pearl/queen anne's and imperial flagship) even a 2 gun deck or 3 gun deck ship would be awesome.
Love your content! Could you please do an unboxing and review of the new Lego Disney Castle? It would be awesome to see your insights on the build quality, design, value for money, and even a comparison with previous models.

Yeah i get it, retro parts pack for Pirates lovers, but still
Thank you for the details on this set ! The modularity is a great thing.
I was actually kinda afraid after this review that I was going to hate the building experience on this set. Turns out: nope! Loving it.
Buying this set it might be the best one this year. Absolutely loving all of the remake sets!
Think the boss should have a cape on
I have the old Eldorado set and this modular remake is great, must have. Great combination with Lego create pirate ship 3 in 1
5:00 IDK about you but I *hate* clips and don't trust them at all, I treat them like fine China and they still break. Cool idea but I would be too anxious of having to replace broken bricks to ever really use it.
Really? Only issue I've had with clips was brown ones, but that problem has been solved by LEGO years ago
Since its modular it makes sense there is no big plate base. And therefor i dont think its fair to be seen as a negative point.
I don't understand why they didn't use the same technique for the palm trees as with Barracuda Bay. They're clearly marketed at the same crowd.
I’m so excited! I’ve been waiting for this forever!
Lego has now declared the "Icon" line, to which this set belongs.
I’m so excited this is coming out!
Great review! I think about combining sets often too, the pyramid of Giza immediately comes to mind.
Built this one today, it took me a few hours! I agree that building the rocks section was a bit repetitive, but the end result looks fantastic.
Best Lego reviewer on TH-cam, hands down!
I got 5 of the Lion knights castles (still considering to get another 5 - not sure if and when we will be getting anything like it) - this set, although I am not a huge pirate fan, I will get at least 3 of to get an enclosed one with 2 walled sections around it.
I cant wait for this set to hit the shelves! I'm definitely getting one!
I hope that Lego will release another pirate/imperials ship this year!
70410-1 was my first ever Lego set, and while I may have never gotten any pirates sets after that one, I wanna get that set so I can have another set from that theme (even though 70410-1 came out in 2005 so I'm not an "OG" pirates fan)
Looks awsome will go nice with my 90th lions Knight castle great review
I still have the big pirate ship with black/white sails... Skull's Eye Schooner 6286 set, I was 10 years-old ....
Beautiful set, great memorie of my childhood, it is perfect for the 80's lego fans, what else?
I haven't build this yet, but am heavily nostalgic for it. Pirates was always my theme growing up.
And yet, I do not love this set either. I think the old one looks better with a healthy mix of bricks and wall panels. You would think building elements from bricks is better, but it makes the fortress look so incredibly clutteree. This is especially visible in the cranetower where two corner elements would have made the whole thing look so much better. To my eyes there is such a thing as too much "detail".
Pair this with the modern instructionbooks and you have this weird building experience where you often don't see what you are building and suddenly it's done. I liked the old books where you turned the page and thought "ooh sweet, this is what we're doing next?"
missing or wrong pieces have been happening more and more often in my recent lego set purchases, quality control seems to be going down dramatically
Out of the two dozen or so sets I have purchased in the last month or so, have had 0 issues still. Hopefully you had some exceptions!
I had a minifig missing a hand in the lion castle set. Other than that, of all the new sets i bought, i didnt have anything else missing
I like the concept of an imperial fortress but not sure I enjoy the design and features. Similar to the A Frame cabin something doesn’t feel quite authentic. Its also not much of an upgrade like Lion Knight Castle was. Might still get this if on sale.
I'm so excited to get this and hope we get some cool pirate stuff this year. I wish they'd keep pirated and Castle sets as a running theme.
i hope that the pieces for the soldiers will appear on pick a brick!
I can see how the baseplate is a minus, but in terms of playability for kids, I guess the modular setup would be a great plus, even if biuilding it might be tedious
It needs optional heads, to get read of the female heads. If the male officer can have a pony
tail that is ok
Misogynist alert
I would love to have more large pirate ships (like black pearl/queen anne's and imperial flagship) even a 2 gun deck or 3 gun deck ship would be awesome.
Would have been nice if they added a couple small wall/railing pieces to fill in the gaps when you modulate the set in the "condensed" position
I like the old monkey mold with the Minifigure hands better then the new one
Love your content! Could you please do an unboxing and review of the new Lego Disney Castle? It would be awesome to see your insights on the build quality, design, value for money, and even a comparison with previous models.
Tomorrow… 😎
No comparison though as I don’t have the old one!
We should get a duel molded one in white so it’s like a powdered wig!
I want some of the Explorer Egypt sets remade. Those were my favourites
The Likelyhood of the baseplate mould being scrapped is high
Love the channel, look forward to seeing your review of the batcave shadow box
Coming soon!
