If we had enough faith, then we were taught that god would answer our prayers (in the affirmative via good feelings.) As a 65 y.o. man, as a boy in the 60's, we all believed the end was near. During WWII, people in the U.S. sold their homes and went up into the mountains to wait for the rapture. During this 6+ decade journey, I've seen/known so many who believed "the end is near". Many of them were apparently right, as they are no longer with us. I see yesterdays babies grow out of diapers, have kids, and subscribe to the "end is near" school of belief. It is so interesting to see other people's kids grow to adulthood, and decide that they are ordained to teach "The Truth", and they collect a cult following, and, they all seem to think that all that is old... is new.
I believe, in possibilities. I believe after someone spews out what they 'believe' is 'the truth', that they could be right. But, they could be wrong. You see, I believe in possibilities. I believe it's possible, that no one knows the truth, they only believe it is. So, it is possible, that everyone is wrong, even me. What a paradox. Just don't kill anyone that doesn't share your 'beliefs', and I believe it'll work out in the end.

The biggest fertilizer of slavery is ignorance In the entire first Christian century Jesus is not mentioned by a single Greek or Roman historian, religion scholar, politician, philosopher or poet. His name never occurs in a single inscription, and it is never found in a single piece of private correspondence. Zero! Zip references.
Till 325 AD, not a single historian or writer wrote about Jesus Christ or any of his disciples .
BEFORE THE FIRST COUNCIL OF NICEA IN 325 AD, NOBODY ON THIS PLANET EVER HEARD OF THE NAMES JESUS CHRIST OR CHRISTIANITY.
JESUS/ BIBLE / CHRISTIANTY WAS COOKED UP IN 325 AD, BY JEWESS HELENA , WHO SAT ON THE POPE'S CHAIR..
"Vatican is Evil terrorist satanic organisation."
If Satan does exist, then he thrives inside the Roman Catholic Church.
The dead sea scrolls covering the period from Birth of Jesus to 68 AD , does NOT say one word about Jesus or his 12 Apostles.
Hellenistic philosopher Philo Judaeus of Alexandria (20 BCE-50 AD/CE)-alive at the purported time of Jesus, and one of the wealthiest and best connected citizens of the Empire- makes no mention of Christ, Christians or Christianity in his voluminous writings. Nor do any of the hundreds of other historians and writers who flourished during the first THREE centuries of the common era.
The DEAD SEA SCROLLS were all written by Pagan Essenes . None of them have been edited by later Christians, as is the case with some other Jewish literature.
All the scrolls (except a treasure map known as the Copper Scroll) can be dated prior to A.D. 68 or 69, when the Qumran settlement was believed to have been destroyed by the Romans in the Jewish revolt.
The oldest of the scrolls probably goes back to the middle of the third century B.C. The people of Qumran belonged to a Pagan religious group known as the Essenes.
Pliny the Elder, who died during the volcanic destruction of Pompeii in the year 79 A.D., described a community of pagan Essenes living on the western shore of the Dead Sea, close to where Khirbet Qumran is situated.
John the Baptist was an ascetic Essene . He was a vegan and was uncircumcised . Various literary sources like Josephus and Philo tell clearly that Essenes were ascetics.
We also know, from literary testimony, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the archaeological remains of Qumran, that the Essenes practiced many water baptisms for ritual purification-similar to a dip in the Ganges or the river Pampa or at Thiirunelli. At Qumran, however, all members of the community were baptized with water for ritual purification.
Josephus writes, "And as for their piety towards God, it is very extraordinary; for before sunrising they speak not a word about profane matters, but put up certain prayers which they have received from their forefathers, as if they made a supplication for its rising" (Wars, 2.8.5). This testimony accords well with what we know from the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Prayer and humility was one thing that the Essenes . When they cooked up stories about Jesus they wrote that Jesus Christ ate the Last Supper in the Essene part of town.
Jesus is not historical character, The Dead Sea Scrolls have produced increasing evidence to cement the fact that Jesus Christ never existed and the whole story was cooked up at the First Council of Nicea in 325 AD.
The FAKE gospels were written after 325 AD after Jesus was cooked up at the first Council of Nicea..
Twelve apostles of Jesus never existed.
Jesus Christ names 12 apostles to spread his gospel, and the early Christian church owes its rapid rise to their missionary zeal. Yet, for most of the Twelve, there's scant evidence of their existence outside of the New Testament.
The concept of using statistics to prove that 'God authored the Bible' is bullshit.
Why was the library of Alexandria burnt ?
The gospel of Thomas was not written by Jesus' disciple Thomas.
Englishman Godfrey Higgins studied Greek, Latin and law at Cambridge . His two-volume, 867-page book Anacalypsis: An Enquiry into the Origins of Languages, Nations, and Religions, was published posthumously in 1836.
In his treatise, Higgins writes " the mythos of the Jews and the mythos of the Greeks are all at bottom the same lifted from the ancient mythos of Hindus ; and ... are contrivances under the appearance of histories to perpetuate doctrines," and that Christian editors “either from roguery or folly, corrupted them all.”
1900, Scottish MP John Mackinnon Robertson wrote that Jesus never existed but was an FAKE invention by a first-century messianic cult. He wrote about the First Council of Nicea of 325 AD where powerful forces invented a new god to fit the needs of the society of the time .Robertson specifically mentions the Talmudic story of the Yeshu .
Thomas says: "Simon Peter said to them, ‘Make Mary leave us, for females don’t deserve life.’ Jesus said, ‘Look, I will guide her to make her male, so that she too may become a living spirit resembling you males. For every female who makes herself male will enter the kingdom of heaven’" (Thomas 114).
AIYOOOOO -even Christians don’t like this
When the master of James baby Jesus Christ never existed -- how can his disciple St James exist ?
Even since the dead sea scrolls have been discovered CHRISTIANS and JEWS are jumping up and down like demented orangutans claiming that Essenes belong to them.
Dead Sea text or Qumran Scrolls have absolutely nothing ZILCH, to do with the Bible of the Torah - never mind the diabolical lies of the Christians and the Jews.
For arguments sake -even if messiah Jesus Christ existed , the gospels were written a even a century after Jesus' estimated year of death, by individuals who never met Jesus, and then were edited or forged over the centuries by unknown scribes with their own agendas.
Dead sea scrolls have been written by Essenes of the sect of Apollonius

There is no single “Dharma”. And even Buddhism has so many different varietals and sects, there are stil many Buddhists who Deify Siddhartha. Seeking truth is good, but words still mean stuff! Buddhists can’t even agree on what the true teachings are. Some say with age he gained wisdom, and by rejecting the notion of Godhood, he finally achieved Nirvana. Others who say, he lost his way, and others still who deny the notion he ever made such a declaration. I get that the aesthetics are a vibeyer vibe than stuffy western religions. But it’s still just that, a religion. And to say otherwise is to deny reality. That one can, through mediation or “being holy enough” achieve “Nirvana” I’m sorry Homie, THAT is Dogma. That's every age of history. I've seen news articles change what they wrote without leaving an editors note at the bottom. I know that only because I read the article and when I went back to cite it, the wording changed. Also, how is that not Twitter or Facebook or social media today in general? People wrote stuff forever ago on twitter and thousands of people went back through their timeline and deleted their tweets and pretended it never existed. That's a modern book burning session if you think about it. JK rolling went back into her books and said characters were gay now, just because she said so. Disney changed Star Wars by saying all of the fandom created around it didn't matter but only the movies and whatever they produced mattered. Disney changed what they didn't like to fit what they wanted into the Star Wars universe. And unfortunately this will just keep happening, because people's narratives matter more to them than the truth and more than history.

When I was a young Mormon, Steve Young told a story about his time playing pro football. A teammate saw his garments (Mormonism's sacred underwear) & teasingly asked where he could get some. Young claims he responded that they were too expensive for his teammate to afford.
About a decade later, I'm in church & somebody tells that same story. Except it's not about Steve Young. The guy is claiming it happened to him. Except he was in the Marines at the time to make it fit with his personal history. All other details were very similar, right down to the part about garments being too expensive for others to own.

One of those reasons happens to be the lack of original texts. The mental gymnastics that Christians conduct to explain the lack of original texts stuck out to me in seminary. With the Roswell Crash as its Crucifixion-like inciting incident, that crashed saucer its Holy Grail for which people search, and the hoped for Disclosure as its Rapture, when everything is rewritten and a new world is born.
Most of the actual experiencers of the event are dead now. We have to rely on the stories of those who knew them. And they, too, will soon be gone. Believers will just have to take it on faith that "something crashed in the desert near Roswell in 1947 that changed everything."

It's my understanding that the earliest surviving copy of Josephus was made by a scribe/monk in an Irish monastery, several centuries after Josephus lived. The scribe would have been writing in the context of an entirely Christian society and political structure, which was not the case for Josephus. Given the centuries that passed and the radical change in society/politics, how reliable can we consider the work of that scribe? If we have other *independent* copies of around the same period, but written in circumstances where the same motivations would not have been present, that would help. But we don't.

Maybe 8/15 have something to gain by Joe being a real person, ergo, they would more than likely be influenced by a personal bias.
You took a very broad idea and centralized and focused the application on the overall topic. In other words, he's saying to 'know' the source.
      Would A be biased?

I think it's perfectly possible that the biographies of several people called Jesus (like the prophet Jesus Ben Ananias who was tortured by the Romans) got mixed up. This may have happened accidentally. It was virtually impossible to check information when the gospels were written (it was an age without the internet or mass media after all), so the writers of the gospels may simply have been confused.

And I agree but that isn't shocking considering most manuscripts of ancient texts come centuries later. Tacitus wrote in the first century but our earliest manuscript of his comes from the 9th century. And similar responses on all manuscript material. Things that may seem really damning for the Bible on the surface actually promote its reliability. As I pointed out with Tacitus, our first manuscripts of most ancient sources are much, much, much later. These manuscripts also commonly come in just fragments. The earliest complete New Testament comes 300 years after the original composition. That may seem really bad, until you realize that it is better than any other writing in history. TERRIBLE was a word he chose to make make it look like the argument he makes is true. But what if we changed it to "Eyewitness testimony is not perfect". If it was TERRIBLE, the police would not use it in investigations... because it is TERRIBLE.
Now, if we follow him, it would mean that OTHER eyewitness testimonies in history were ALSO terrible... what all things in our "known" history would change if we looked at any old text through those lenses? So while no historian claim the info is perfect, I know of NONE who claim that it is terrible.

If this was a real issue, debate, find, archaeological top discovery... I would have stumbled upon it. I never had... this video was the first time EVER I heard about it. All other kinds of discoveries have popped up, not this one.
OK, one known Daniel Wallace (mentions it) and Scott Carroll.
"The hype was so high" ... like I said, i have never even heard about it!
Here is a plausible explanation (from textandcanon.org).
Egypt Exploration Society (EES) had UNPUBLISHED text fragments. Someone working for them had offered to SELL some fragments to GREEN family (mentioned in the video). But EES is NOT allowed to sell UNPUBLISHED fragments.
120 text pieces are missing from EES, and police investigation ongoing. Someone wanted to make money on them, working for EES.
Dr Dirk Obbink (a super expert) had in fact dated the papyri to 1st century AD at some point... this news spread to SOME scholars. Later the papyri was dated to a later date.
Carroll who was working for GREEN did not have/get access to the papyri as it was owned by EES.
"Christians now had the best proof ever"
Again the video is suggesting that this was SOOOO important and SOOO many scholars were SOOOO excited.
This was one small mistake, a hasty conclusion based upon a REAL super specialists hasty dating of a papyri.
This was not a cornerstone in the Christian faith. As I said, I had never even heard about it.
I see this as a strawman! An attempt to use one intentionally misrepresented position to try to defeat arguments for Christianity.
4 min 30 seconds is used for this strawman.
Next he makes an unjust comparison between evidence for George Washington who lived in the 18th century and became a president, to a peasant living 2000 years ago. If we compared evidence for Jesus to OTHER people of the similar time and status, they will have LESS evidence... and that is why the apologists say we have a LOT (which is true for that category).
      and more follows....

The book of Mark was the first gospel written and it’s interesting for what not in “Mark’s” story. No immaculate conception, no nativity, no wise men. Mark starts with an adult Jesus being baptized by John. Then after John’s execution Jesus becomes the leader of John’s followers. That’s pretty believable. I can buy what Mark is selling up to that point. Jesus is a regular guy who was conceived the regular way who became a follower of John. But I can see why later gospel writers felt they had to Jesus’s Origin story more godlike.

Also it’s very interesting that in Mark, Yeshua’s dying words are “My god, my god, why have you forsaken me?” Those aren’t the words of a man who is confident that god is on their side. Those are words of regret and fear, and anger. In Luke his dying words are “Father into your hands I commit my spirit”. Those are the words of a man who trust god, and knows everything will work out for the best. John, Yeshua’s dying words are, “It is finished”, those are the words of a man who sees his death as a sacrifice that serves a greater purpose. I am more than willing to bet that the historical Yeshua’s dying words were closest to Mark and Mathew’s account.

Tell me what you think of my theory. I believe Yeshua was an Essene, born and raised in Nazareth. He began to follow John the Baptist, after John's execution he inherited his followers, he probably was a charlatan that performed simple parlor tricks, and was most likely aware of the messianic prophecies and tried his best to conform to them (riding a donkey, claiming he was a descendant of David). I believe that after he was crucified his brother James took over the movement, and eventually Paul hijacked the movement and may have been in cahoots with the Claudian Dynasty or Flavian Dynasty.

I officially turned you over to all my atheist family members and atheist friends and all my atheist web sites and discussion apps (like Quora) with a big thumbs up 👍. I especially like that you promote education before all else. I told my grandkids in their early teens that it was best to get some education before you start calling yourself anything. Especially an atheist. That’s like wearing a tag that says “I’m an atheist, debate me, debate me”. Once you put a label on it, you’ll be called on to defend you’re position and nothing is more embarrassing than not having a clue but you don’t realize it until you’re in a debate and made a fool of. I like your perspective as a former Christian. Maybe you, better than a lifelong atheist like myself, can get across to some Christian’s that we’re really not out to “get them”. We just want to protect our rights too. Thanks for your work. It’s worthy.

The good work is sharing the Gospel so that others may know the love of the Father in Heaven. They will know they have a purpose in life in serving the Lord, as there isn’t much of one without God. The Bible is a history book that has been around for thousands of years. It was written during the very eras its words speak about. Hopefully, you don’t think someone just made up all those chapters of detailed genealogical records which are written in books like Chronicles. I would encourage you to look up a man named Lee Strobel, a former atheist who sought out to disprove Christianity. His research actually led him to become a believer and write a book called “The Case for Christ.” Sorry, if this reply seems a little all over the place, but there’s just so much to talk about.

hello! i’m in the process of understanding my faith as a Christian more and more and this video has been a great one to pick my brain with, i’m subscribed! as i’ve begun digging and just analyzing different videos, my temporary standings are as follows: the Bible has been such a circulated piece of text that i’d say it’s possible things may have been changed or context is just completely thrown out the window, leading to misinterpretation and as you mentioned, over exaggeration of certain events. i agree (obviously lol) that Jesus did exist and i think there’s something to be said about how prosperity preachers, cult leaders, and just regular people tainting the image and teachings of Jesus. that said, with the question you posed near the end, i guess the draw to Jesus (based off of the Bible) for me is the balance between His teachings and the allusion to Him being God.
He stood up against pharisees and people who discriminated against other “less-faithful/religious” people, not as just a chill guy from nazareth, but the son of God. to which He then, taught people to love one another. of course His other main commandment, loving God with your everything, was also there but it was tied in with the love we are commanded to give to each other. once again, not just as a teacher and chill dude, but as the son of God.
again, historians as well as science don’t have too much to hold onto as far as the divinity goes, along with even the things i mentioned in that last paragraph haha. but while there isn’t a whole lot there we can physically point to, i guess that’s just where the faith comes in. wonderful video! excited to see more :)

I am an atheist but I do like Bret Weinsteins's argument that whilst religion is not literally true, having a society based on that belief structure gives the society an advantage over godless socities. In the case of Islam for example, a proseltizing war based religion is very successful at winning wars over other religious socities, see the recent events in Afghanistan show.. In other words, a religious societies are more succsesful over non religious societies. The englightenment and scientific revolutions have fundamentally changed this fundamentla truth and now our secular societies are more successful. But whether that can last forever remains to be seen.

I’m a Christian just browsing the internet on historical evidences for Jesus (not anywhere near renouncing my faith by any means just honestly looking to be challenged in my thought process and beliefs) and one thing that stood out to me is when you spoke of men writing history in their favor. Usually fluffing the text making themselves look good. But throughout the Bible it is recorded the MANY MANY mistakes that people made. Saul (later Paul), was a murderer, David committed adultery and murder, I would think the many messed up things that they did would have been recorded differently but it wasn’t recorded that way. Again and again throughout scripture men are doing the worst things and it all comes back to why? Why would they record themselves (or others record about their actions since we don’t know exactly who wrote some of the scriptures) in such a bad light? Why would they make themselves look bad in order to make jesus look good? I suppose you could say that in any cult believers are brainwashed to think of their leader as perfect and without error. Something about the consistency of these men writing about the bad things they have done rarely putting themselves in a good light. Anyways would love feedback if you have. Loved the critical think process here.

Did the Bible record any mistake JESUS made? That's the point here. They only recorded their own sins after repenting.

Electronidus -- the stories in the bible you read aren't people writing about themselves. These are OTHER people writing about them. They can make up anything they'd like. And chances are the people they're writing about are just fictional and serving as morality tales. King David and Solomon were already committing adultery with their 300 wives and 600 concubines and still sleeping with yet other women out of wedlock. Before the Bathsheba event, god didn't have a problem with David doing this. Same with Solomon. He was never condemned by god for his sexual antics. It was his due as king and culturally it was not seen as 'bad'. Abraham knocks up his wife's slave girl, then tosses her and the boy she bore him out in the desert to die so his "legitimate" son can rule. Abraham is not punished for this. Not even considered evil because as a slave owner it's his right to do what he wants to his slaves.
We have no evidence Saul was a murderer (he never called himself Paul). All we have is his word on things. No one else corroborates his actions prior to his religious conversion. So are they true?

Those disciples didn't write the Gospels. They were written by other people much later. What would those other people care about showing the faults of the disciples? Now ask yourself this: can you recall any account of Jesus sinning in the Gospels?
Remember your very own line(Quoted directly from you): "you could say that in any cult believers are brainwashed to think of their leader as perfect and without error"

    • @robinpage2730
      @robinpage2730 ปีที่แล้ว

Agreement between two arrest reports isn't sufficient to convict someone of a crime. You need empirical evidence from outside the reports to support the claims made therein. Without that, it's heresay.
A claim about an event is independent of the fact of the event itself. A report or claim cannot stand by itself as evidence for itself. Caesar's Commentaries On The Gallic War are a report about Caesar's campaign in what is now France against Vercingetorix. We can prove empirically that Caesar existed, that Vercingetorix existed, that a battle was fought at the location described, and we have no reason to believe that Caesar was lying. Caesar also claimed that the gods favored him and let him win the battle. If everything else he wrote wasn't demonstrably false, by the Christian approach to textual analysis, we must also accept that the Roman gods actually exist, and favored Caesar. See the problem? That's not how real historians do textual analysis and archaeology, and Christian history shouldn't be treated any different
