Universes Beyond is banking off of someone else's IP to make a sponsored product. On paper, there's the potential to combine both audiences. But at the same time, it also feels like they're moving away from Magic the Gathering and making a different card game entirely.
@@ShooterMcKevin1I keep hearing about LoTR drawing in new players. I'm glad. I'm ok with the crossovers because of this reason. I just hope that MTG doesn't lose itself in the process
I still feel like Ikoria's Godzilla tie in and Transformers with Brother's War was the BEST way to do it: Collectible alternative arts of existing cards. And then, if it closely ties in, you can do sets and commander: Warhammer and LotR seem like good fantasy/sci fi fits. Dr Who... not so much.
I mean, dr who fits with unfinty, war hammer is eh, lotr is just fantasy (not a fan of the race swapping), mlp is always charity stuff through secret lair, and jurassic park and ixalan makes sense. So like i get it. The only ones i dont really get is baulders gate considering the game was still in early access.
When I say "fits" I think I mean more with the overall aesthetic of magic. Warhammer does, LotR kinda does. But when you get into things like Walking Dead or Jurassic Park, they're too "real world" if that makes sense.@@deathnights-bane3301
@danielreyns3540 i dunno, i think they all fit, i was not a fan of how wizards took it upon themselves to alter key lotr characters, i just think that for baulders gate that releasing it before the games out of early access is hasty, the rest of them fit in their own way, i dont really think anything is off limits for magic at this point with the exception of maybe mad max, but brothers war had a tone of robots, ikoria had kaiju, unfinity was a space theme so dr who is hardly a stretch, dinosaurs are a core race type by this point so jurassic park was gonna show up sooner or later, mlp is charity stuff so pull that apart if you want, the only one i dont get is marvel and final fantasy, and im desperately wondering why we dont have a destiny crossover yet.
As soon as you read "... Talking to investors" immediately puts it as bad. This is what happens when you have people in charge that don't have souls. I remember when magic had it's own immersive compelling story.
That's why it's rare to find a good video game like Elden Ring or God of War Ragnarok with FREE DLC a year later. You get all of these suits fucking up content they don't understand. Disney is another PRIME example, if you are a fan of Star Wars or Marvel you'll understand what I mean.
Honestly we need to go back to maybe 2-3 sets PER YEAR, there's just too much being released too quickly, people can't keep up, neither can their wallets. Hasbro needs to get it into their heads that MtG is a hobby/luxury purchase, we don't NEED to buy new packs and boxes every few months, I'm perfectly fine with skipping purchases for months on end if it means a thematic set I like eill be more accessible to me, without putting me out on the street because I can't afford the cost of living in my area.
If people cant keep up just dont buy? They can launch this much product cause people are buying and they are making a profit. Just buy singles, i would rather have a way bigger box to pick things from than a small box where i get everything
Ill be honest it is so strange to see so many cross over sets with things that isnt fantasy or dnd it feels cash grabby just to put "themed" cards that are other big IPs.
That's my biggest problem with it honestly. D&D I had no problem with. I like a lot of the cards from those sets because they still felt like they fit the style of MTG. Same with Lotr. I'm even mostly okay with Final Fantasy, since it kind of crosses the sci-fi and fantasy genres in a similar way to Neon Dynasty. But when we're making jumps to Doctor Who, Jurassic Park, Walking Dead, and the planned Marvel, it feels so out of left field for a game build on fantasy to include them when none of them overlap with high or low fantasy.
@@SomeOfTheJuiceI would say Jurassic Park makes sense do to dinosaurs being such a big tribe in magic. But otherwise you’re cooking bro, I agree with you
@@SomeOfTheJuice How did you not mention Fallout? WotC went out of their way to license an IP from Bethesda and passed over TES for Fallout. TES could easily fit in with MTG, at least as much as D&D.

Conspiracy theory: this is all part of their plan to revitalize standard. They print so many cards into other formats so that standard is the only playable format
@@AspiringSpaceWizard That’s a pretty negative way of looking at it. Standard is the only reason we get new cards. The mechanics are tested for that format. And Standard does need to come back. Commander is a casual format, while it’s recognized as an official format by WotC and they make products for it, at the end of the day, we wouldn’t have the 6+ releases we have each year WITHOUT standard. Standard is the official format of MtG, if it dies off, so does MtG, does Standard have problems? Yes it does, but then again, so does Commander, so does Pioneer, so does Modern, and so does Legacy. Revitalizing Standard is a step in the right direction.
@@KCEBGaming No one is gonna play standard again IRL. Sorry bud but MTG arena killed that. Trust me I work in a store and nobody has played standard there in 3+ years.

Truly MtG is the Fortnite of TCGs. Same base game, different paint jobs. If it gets new people playing, I don’t mind it. If it’s purely to sell more high end product, (secret lairs, collectors packs, commander decks), I can rest easy and enjoy the cards I already have.
While attracting new players is always good, it's better to keep old players at the same time. If you're ruining your game just to pander, everyone loses.

MTG has a very consistent theme, tone, and style, which i appreciate as a Yugioh player. LOTR is near the same style so it did well but you cant say the same for things like the doctor who set
I would be completely fine with UB if the universes were compatible or similar to Magic Magic was initially inspired by DnD and Lord of the Rings, Boromir and Elminster fit along Sorin and Karn. But Optimus Prime, Spiderman, Walter White, A white Toyota and Mickey Mouse simply do not fit in the aesthetics and flavor of Magic the Gathering
I'm in agreement with you ~98% I will say, there's a really niche argument to be made that the volume of cards making it hard to keep track of what's out there DOES harken back to the original intent that you built decks with what you had and didn't necessarily know what your opponent might have.
This sucks. I have bought the 40k and LotR commander decks and sets but only because I grew up reading or being a part of those interests. I also have a job and a life outside of the MTG hobby. It's just too much. I'm on the collector and commander side. I don't care about every set release because I already don't have time or can't. Hearing this just makes me want to put everything away, come back and see what's going on in a few years.
We just need a non-UB version of the eternal formats where the whales with no taste who keep buying this trash can go to mash their action figures together without bothering everyone else.
@@elihall6480 We should definitely be angry that ut almost seems like Hasbro is trying to REPLACE the old players that made MTG successful in the first place with a new crowd. It's a massive slap in the face to the people who made the game what it is today.
I’ve been playing since Scars block and I don’t see what the attachment is to magic lore/IP and why everyone is so up in arms about more UB products. I enjoy the game, the mechanics, the collectibility, and so forth. Far, far down that list is my attachment to the lore. It’s hard to consume - like in 2024 I still need to read a blog to keep up with this? It’s not compelling. It’s frequently walked back, and at the end of the day I just do not care. If anything, UB has increased my engagement because I actually understand and appreciate what the cards are trying to represent. If MtG went all UB in the future, I would not be sad.
As the game becomes more diluted and unknowable, thinner also becomes the barrier that keeps players from moving to other games. The rock between "so many cards that I don't care anymore" and "so many other games that I can play" will be the one Hasbro eventually kills Magic with. Look at Pathfinder vs Dungeons and Dragons 4th edition. That was just from one significant competitor. How many significant competing TCGs exist already? Hasbro / Wizards is overlooking the fact that anyone can print paper. Even better, digital paper is free.
I dont think Hasbro is trying to appease players, imo Hasbro doesnt care about the players at all - they only care about appeasing their stockholders. And, as you said, that is very bad for the long term outlook of MTG.
The real issue is that nothing else in Hasbro is really making money. If you remove Monopoly Go and Baldur's Gate, Hasbro would be in some serious trouble last year. Their only hope for profitability is to milk Magic & pray the new edition of D&D is successful.
IMO UB should just be it's own format. I know people can rule zero stuff (in a commander context) but I think that'd be a step in the right direction to preserving MTG's identity.
Sure, but then you have the issue that, if we assume the future UB sets sell ~the same as LotR (just throw in a 1/1 serial card I guess), the normal formats would be supported less and less in the coming years until they decide to just go for UB sets all year.
@@guszwierlein2811 Agree. And the only way to change it, is to not buy into it. But investors/whales and people who buy into the UB IP are the ones that make it impossible. Not to speak of, that it would just drive single prices up so much, that buying displays is actually a good idea. *shrugs*
@everyone! We need to boycott any Universes Beyond releases. We need a landing page for all to congregate, and let others know that they are not alone. We can influence this company, but only if we band together.
I'm mixed on Universes Beyond. On one hand, I am pumped for the Marvel set. A Storm deck with Storm from X men would be awesome. However, flavor wise, it feels wrong that my Grimgrin deck has a bat from Middle Earth in it, since the synergy works. It feels like Magic's IP is slowly devolving from an rich multiverse with interesting concepts ( Planeswalkers are cool) to some bizarre fanfic written by a teenager.
We never learned our lesson from the lorax. We the consumer are responsible for the companies choosing to chop their resources to the ground not thinking about the future
There will never be another crossover as popular as Lord of the Rings ever again. That was a one time thing. Maybe Star Wars? That’s it. It’s not a sustainable model.
I don’t think the idea of UB cards is bad, I think the problem is how much they’re pushing them and the fact that they’re almost all mechanically unique. I wouldn’t mind if they did say one set a year of reskinned cards for UB or even just a couple new cards as long as we got UW copies of them. Like what’s gonna happen to Orcish Bowmasters when LotR boxes start getting harder to find?
Eventually, I think they will be forced to create a Universes Beyond Masters set with In Universe versions of cards from the various Universes Beyond sets.
IP: the Cashening is exactly what they want it to be. And when it burns out they'll moan, kick, and scavenge the wreckage of what's left for whatever sofa change is left before jetisoning Wizards corpse over the side. At this point, what's left but to watch our favorite Magitech/ Magipunk, Cybertech/ Cyperpunk, Steamtech/Steampunk, Modern, Futurian, Western, Fantasy, Tie-In card game burn? Should be a helluva dumpster fire. . .
wow... up until now I wasn't really fond of all this UB but, well, I haev to say their were good attempts and it was kinda in an ok place but that, well it completly made me realise how not-magic magic was going to be o.o it feels like mtg is just going to disapear at this rate and just be a complete mess with no backbone... what hooked me in the game was for a large part the lore and backstory that you could get with flavor text and I loved to follow the stories of character I loved...
Not excited about this one bit, they diluting their brand. Not to mention the treatment Lord of Ring received from them... More 40k decks to continue what they started would very fine but no full sets.
well that's not "new" news, it's really happening since the introduction of Universes Beyond in one way or the another. two premiere set is not "half of magic". I am as angry as you but that's what they said.
Erm...it literally is close to half of the cards printed? As he has even shown, ~400 of the ~2000 cards printed were from the LotR set. Considering they can't just up the set numbers by one, after firing a bunch of ppl from WotC, we can assume that the number of sets released that year will stay the same (as should number of new cards printed stay roughly the same), and the only thing that changes is, one more release being UB. Most sets released have between 300 and 400 cards on average. That bumps the number of UB cards released up to 800/2000. That's 40% and is an issue. even if we are being generous and assume that there will be much more reprints, just with UB art (let's make it 2/3 new cards for the sake of it), that still makes 600 cards not being Magic IP related. That's still ~30% of the cards. And let's be real here. If those set sell close to as well as LotR did, how long do you think it will take for Hasbro to demand a 3rd set to be UB? And a 4th after? They literally tested the waters the last few years, with the Commander precons and the LotR set release.
@@neros_sorenmy only hope is that at some point they will run out of big franchises for UB. After LOTR, Final Fantasy, Harry Potter, Marvel, Star Wars, DC Comics, Warhammer battle, Warhammer 40k I don't see what they could do ? Maybe some anime stuff but there are like 3-4 only that would be famous enough and most of them have their own cards games.
@@elonex777 Run out of IPs? You drunk? They already announced more LotR sets. xD Also, own TCG doesn't matter, proven by them getting the FF IP. And let's be real here. Dr. Who is anything but big today. Same as Marvel. If that happened 3-4 years ago, this would actually make a splash.
@@neros_soren I mean they can't produce endless sets on the same IP and continue to have sales. I'm pretty sure MTG will decline sometime in the next 10 years due to Hasbro decisions. This growth is unsustainable, you can't expect to double MTG revenue every 3 years without crashing it completely.
@@elonex777 Hahahaha, you must be new here. :3 Joke aside...trust me...if they can, they will print every single IP into the ground, until no one buys it anymore. Don't forget, buying those IPs ain't cheap. Especially Marvel, even tho it dropped a bunch from 3-4 years ago. And yes, Hasbro is going to wreck MTG eventually. Hasbro falls into the same "exponential growth" issue as so many AAA game publishers. But hey, at least Hasbro helps Ubisoft to get the money swinging for Assassins Creed, right? xD
I fully quit MTG around the time of Godzilla and Transformers joining the game and the first secret lair being announced because I knew back then that this is where it would go. MTG does not have an identity anymore, it's just a faceless, soulless corporate flagship for Hasbro doing whatever it possibly can to generate revenue at any cost. They don't care about their players or original fan base as long as they can keep luring in numbskulls and shills with pop culture references. Thankfully Flesh and Blood exists, is an infinitely better game, has an identity and soul, and has developers who actually care about their fans and customers. I'm hoping it stays that way but time will tell.
I'm laughing at everyone that bought/promoted the lotr set. I understand that it's the set Hasbro/wotc released at the time, but people can't be mad that this is the result since wotc always states their actions are based on the money. These kinds of results won't stop until mtg players/collectors wake up and stop spending money on these non-mtg lore sets.
Hasbro running another thing to the ground. Doing one of these sets every 2 years is okay as long as it fits in the nature of magic the gathering. Lord of the rings was a great way of doing it. But I have a funny feeling that Hasbro is going to screw it up really bad
That's not what the information says, having two LOTR sized sets mean that cross over sets will be a big focal point rather then the actual story block sets since gimmick sets, mini sets and remasters already take up a lot
Oh somebody call a whambulence. So long as they don't introduce new mechanics that are specific to those sets like the ring temps you where it doesn't make sense to print that text on cards outside of the set I'm all for new cards to play with and meme with
By 2030, we're going to have a 0 cost spell named "power creep" that says, "This spell can't be countered. You win the game. A deck can have any number of cards named power creep."
MTG becoming a diet Weiß Schwarz is not something I would have expected when I started playing back in 2019. What's the point of putting so much time into the characters and lore of a series if half of your cards are just going to be crossovers anyways? Honestly they really should have stuck to what they did with Godzilla where the crossovers were alternate arts. The prices of the cards are only going to skyrocket once they're no longer printed, and they won't even be able to reprint the cards once their licensing agreements expire. It's like they created a new reserve list.
I don't mind universe beyond content, but I do think they are releasing way too much content to fast. Personally, I was a big fan of how they ran the Dr. WHO universe beyond. It wasn't a huge set and all of the cards were accessible.
I wouldn't be surprised if within two years or so people start making "only Universes Beyond" or "no Universes Beyond" decks, which leads to a new sub-format for each format. My 2025 Pioneer "only Beyond" Naya midrange is going to be wild!
If Magic players hate it as much as you say, why arent they supporting Magic IP sets as much as they do Universes Beyond? I think its clear that the majority of MTG players love the mechanics and flexibility of the game and not necessarily the IP. This is of course partly WOTCs fault for not developing their IP to the extent that other popular TCGs have, but its much cheaper to borrow other IPs. The main issue with this move is its another net new set that will release.
Don't really think that's true. Magic players support Magic sets. Universes Beyond brings in TONS of new Timmy's that never played before pumping up sales numbers. The primary buyers of LotR at my local shop were all the new players that found out about Magic through the LotR set. Our player numbers nearly doubled from LotR alone and, as they are new, they are spending tons on that set (and subsequent Magic sets). I just think the numbers are padded by a lot of new players joining because of UB and it isnt that Magic players aren't buying the core sets. MH2 is the best selling Magic set of all time (supported by Magic players) and Kamigawa Neon Dynasty is the best selling Winter set of all time (supported by Magic players). Clearly the Magic IP is being supported by current Magic players. UB just has support as well seeing as LotR is the second best selling set of all time.
@@Fireslingerpirate Not consistently. That's the key. They'll see consistent success with larger Universes Beyond sets because the IPs they're likely to choose for that are established and very popular. Aka they can make bank and draw in new players more consistently than building up their own IP. It's just smart business.
One issue with your mindset here: Go through the 4 main sets of the last year and count the cards that actually made an impact in the 4 biggest formats vs LotR. If you design the cards of UB to be so absurdly strong, that they are staples in 60 card formats, therefore increasing the EV by a ton, adding a 1/1 serial card that will make you a millionaire if you pull it, plus the thousands of people buying into Magic because of LotR (many of them only buying this set and not really playing the game). LotR was marketed way different than in universe sets. I mean, look at MKM. The newest set has around 5 cards that are actually played in Standard, Modern and Pioneer. And around 6/7 new cards that are played in Pauper. Why would you buy a display of MKM when the EV is just terrible, and you are better off buying the singles for 20 bucks?
@@neros_soren My mindset is that the majority of Magic players value cards based on utility vs the Magic IP. Which, demonstrates how weak the IP is. In Pokemon they just print a cool art version of an already existing Charizard worth $0.10 and people will chase it. Why? Their IP is strong so people actually care what card they're buying, not the utility. You proved my point. The majority of existing MTG players love the mechanics, the majority of potential new players care more about IP. So, you either have to grow the IP which is much more risky or use already established ones. Watch, Magic will boom with Marvel, Fallout, Final Fantasy, etc.
@@Helthurian And you count that "majority" on what? Your opinion? And no, Pokemon has chase cards, because they don't pringle, there are actually low rarity of the same card, AND the IP holds value. Also...sure...the majority of players joining through LotR care more about the MTG IP. Do you even consider thinking about what you are writing? Not even to mention, that there is a whole lot of people who bought into LotR because of the IP and never played a game of Magic after. So yeah, the sales for future UB will be great, but it will not be as much of a boost for the playerbase. And your last statement is literally why people dislike UB. You even put the argument of the issue right there. xD Let's see if you get it by yourself.
I honestly felt strange thinking about having a Frodo magic card and thought it was more of a meme initially. Don't care for the idea myself. Soon it will be, who's your commander. Darth Vader. And yours? Thanos...
The first commanders me and my friend built were Shelob and Gandalf. I'm not sure how successful Magic would've been in getting players like me without Universes Beyond. Personally excited to see what comes out. Its non-traditional, but growth typically is.
I think if they keep pushing the power too hard with those universe beyond sets it’s going to hurt the game really bad. Just predicting we could see decks that are just a mish mash of franchises and no MTG cards once we’re getting 2 of these sets a year.
For 30 years I’ve been dreaming of an actual Marvel crossover - we used to do fan-made Marvel cards in the 90s, so for me it’s a dream come true. Just wanted to say that not every die-hard MtG fan is against UB or collabs like Marvel
Agreed I've been dreaming of Final Fantasy and Marvel personally as big fan of both growing up, so 2025 UB is exciting for me. Been playing from Unlimited/Revised era, so same feeling for me. So +1 again for die-hard fan being pro collabs
I think there are a lot of fans out here that love it and hence why the sales are reflected. We also happen to be fans that understand the concept of not everything is made for you and that’s ok because we surely aren’t that entitled that want toys only for us. Unfortunately, the ones that don’t are also the most vocal, as they will cry at each moments notice, like this channel…outrage culture is a thing and misery loves company. I’ve only started watching this channel, and notice this guy always has something negative to push, and that is ok, I just won’t engage. If I continue to go back even when something is bad, then that’s on me.
@@hza579 agreed completely. On top of what you've mentioned, as seen with other entertainment and games, collabs truly bring people from different camps over to enjoy. I recently met someone who only got into MTG due to Warhammer 40k EDH and I am starting to hear about people who want to dabble more. As for potentially pushing players/people into other games, I've yet to really encounter an issue like that. As for this channel, give it a shot, while I don't agree with some takes, there are of course things which are impressive and fun too like their budget techs and ideas.
You kids are gonna be mad at me, but i’m fine with the crossovers. Fallout has cut got one of of my friends that hates magic to play. Laura Croft is one of my childhood characters. And Marvel will be the best set there ever is. Coming from yugioh, you guys are lucky to have crossovers. Feel free to disagree 👍
Hasbro wants the card game equivalent of Fortnite. If Universes Beyond keeps making them money they WILL start cutting more and more real magic sets so they can cram more crossovers into a year
Would love to see a poll and see who actually cares about lore. I personally never got into the lore super in depth. I know that the stories behind the cards are really cool, however I mostly just care about playing the game.
I have mixed feelings. I've been playing since my first deck Graveborn, and I've always fantasized about something like this, but I don't want it to dilute MTG to the point it's like the Weiss TCG. The Warhammer 40K and LOTR Universes Beyond are the only ones, I feel "fit" in MTG.
Another point, since they are printing so many cards it's causing the color division to become diluted. Things that used to be color specific are now just thrown on to any or card.
I am new to magic so maybe I dont understand, but how is this bad. Normally collabs in games are hype. I am personally so excited for the final fantasy collab next year. With the amount of product being pushed out, is it really that bad for 2 of them to be collabs.
It's because the magic audience is young and easily swayed and content creators run out of things to talk about. Now since Karlov isn't doing as well as previous sets, people are complaining about the state of magic. Nothing new is being said here and people had to wait 6 months for a "poor" set to be released. Soon everyone's gonna be complaining about how they can't find fallout products anywhere.
@@jaimerivera4332 How about instead of young I say immature. Will it get you to see my point then? Young can mean young but it can also mean new as in just getting into magic.
Wizards needs to realize that just because something works doesn’t mean they need to do it even harder. I liked 2018 Dominaria’s legends matter theme, but then every set after that has been legends matter. These things won’t be special if they become evergreen. Why do they feel the need to exhaust us with an idea before they back down. Back down before we’re exhausted, leave us wanting more, don’t do whatever this is.
I like UB, but there is a caveat. I think magic has the best rules set of any card game and maybe any game ever made. I really like being able to use the rules in another universe. But, not at the expense of the actual card game. I started playing in 95 and the world building then was good, but vague. You would get references on cards and have to piece the story together. The lore was not why we played. So coming from then, it doesn't bother me much. I can understand why it might bother newer players that are more invested in the magic story
All my friends are super excited for these crossovers, and I know new players that got into the game because of LOTR. To be fair, magic purists will still get four sets a year dedicated to them, which is more than what we used to get under the old release schedule. I get it’s annoying to play across from The Doctor or the Fortnite Battle Bus, but in the spirit of magic, if it brings new people to discover and enjoy the game we know and love, what more can we ask for? This marks a new era for magic, and most of the playerbase isn’t bothered by it (see Jake&Joel’s poll about it).
I started playing after years of my friends trying to convince me because of the transformers cards. When I joined I got my siblings in, their significant others and my fiancé. 8 people including myself began playing because of the universes beyond. I love magic now and I don’t even use the transformer cards anymore outside of slicer. I understand the hesitation but you can rule 0 only magic characters, or rule 0 a specific set so I don’t see the downside. The game as a whole is getting way to many new cards each year but that’s not just a universes beyond problem that’s a magic as a whole problem
@@chestnutmouse6823 Well, LOTR wasn’t too bad… it was weird for everyone at first. I think it’s becoming a thing where maybe wizards is running out of ideas and kinda wants to explore with other IP’s in attempt to monetize, but not continuously become more creative with what magic is really all about. After all, magic has always had it’s own lore.
I actually prefer them printing Universes Beyond to the alternative, which would probably be more masters and legends set instead. I feel the problem many players are facing is having all these cards printed. 2000 cards in a year are too many. It`s set after set after holiday edition after set after secret lair after set.... The worst part: I want to play with all those cards! Most seem like fun. But even if I had the money, there`s just not enough time to! Fall sick for a month and you might miss a whole set, including a whole limited metagame experience. I wish they would slow down and let us enjoy playing with the cards for a few weeks. But it`s all about the money so Hasbro be printing cards. If anything, I think UB make skipping a set easier.
I harken back to a time when our game was more niche. They didn't make a lot of cards but they made enough. We had time to appreciate every change to our little game and had the chance to grab the same booster packs to find what was established as the meta and the chase cards for at least the better part of the year. Fans of the lore had the time to theorycraft the story of the latest sets and find out what happened to our favorite characters. It was... MAGIC. Now... It's just Magic The cashgrabbering. They just churn out more and more disposable product without care about the community within and just slap on whatever is vaguely geeky and sell it at a ludicrous markup. It's like the Big Bang Theory. It's geek-face to try and squeeze profit of people who love things that represent quirky and creative things.
I understand why people don’t like universes beyond, but 40K and LoTR cards did the work to actually finally pull me in. My dad was into magic in college and so I grew up staring at white borders, but I never got all the way in. Later on when I was freshly out of highschool a friend of mine got me some cards and I had some fun with it but it didn’t quite do it for me. Very recently my friends talked me into commander, and because I am a huge fan of both Tolkien and Warhammer 40,000, it was really easy for me to take that dive and actually get emotionally(and financially) invested in Magic: The Gathering. In the last couple months I’ve dived head first into the lore and playstyles and cards. Although I suppose you can’t blame it entirely on universes beyond , there’s no denying that it has played an incredibly important part in my magic journey.
I don’t understand why they would be doing this. You can’t compare the profits off the LOTR release bc it’s LOTR. It’s an outlier in all cases. LOTR is the OG. There wouldn’t be magic without it. What other IPs could even come close? D&D was tragic.
I don’t like the crossovers, that doesn’t mean I don’t like the properties. Didn’t buy a single pack of lotr set, mtg has incredible ip, and it should be developed. The fact that lotr and warhammer being better sets is to cover the cost of using those IP? Mtg ip should be first and best, which should make wotc and Hasbro more profit.
I don't understand all the hate for Universes Beyond. In all fairness I am new to MTG so perhaps I don't understand, but the LoTR set was the only reason my friend was able to get me into Magic was for my love of that franchise. Since then I've gotten into the game even more and learned more about the wider lore, but with Universes Beyond it's just another way to expand your player base. I have a few friends started picking up cards and making decks for the same reason after I did. One friend is so into 40k he bought every precon.
I think people are just trying to complain to complain, I’ve been playing for a couple years now and my brother has been playing for way longer and we both find these sets to be really fun, don’t let anyone make you feel bad for enjoying something you enjoy
So, you like the lore of MTG, right? You know that the lore got thinner and thinner over the last couple of years? How big of a chance do think there will be, for the lore to actually expand if the big selling point of MTG in the future will be UB? And that's the issue people have with it. It's not UB. It's that the original identity and lore suffers even more than it has been already. UB is not an issue in a vacuum, it is however an issue if it is pushed like LotR was. The powerlevel of some cards in that set is absurd. The landcycle commons are played pretty much in every format they are legal in. The one ring is close to being busted, and can't be banned, because of how expensive it is. Bowmasters is a staple in pretty much every black deck in every format it is legal in. And now compare it to the Standard legal sets. If you do not keep up with 60 card formats, because you only play Commander is my guess. Guess how many high powerlevel cards were in the last couple of sets? On average 5 with most of them being uncommons. And now tell me, how those sets are meant to compete, sales wise. And because they under perform in sales, guess what happens if there is a mythic in the set that IS a staple? Exactly...Sheoldred happens. You end in a card being 80 bucks because it only has a 1/8 chance to be in a pack, and is played as a 2-3 off in most black decks from Standard-Modern. Worsened by the fact that The one Ring makes Sheoldred busted.
I feel like LotR was an outlier. I don't think other sets will see the same level of energy. But, that might be bias. I went hard on LotR because I love the franchise.
I personally think that the Lord of the Rings crossover was a very bad thing for Magic. It was inflated pricing for a long time because people were gambling to try to get the one ring because it was guaranteed to be able to sell for over $1 mil. Then after it finally got found, the pricing dropped to reasonable. And so many people bought much more than they would have just to try to get that one card. And if they keep doing the "one unique art" style card, it will end up doing the same thing of hurting people wanting to buy when it first comes out because people are going to gamble again.
For me it depends on the IP. I loved Lotr set. The Marvel set is gross and im gonna puke. But if they would make Wolvenstein nazi tribal Commander deck i would buy two. ❤
I'd prefer that they hadn't done Universes Beyond as well, but this video is a series of inane arguments against it. First of all, the Quarterly report was good news. Secondly, the question asked whether people in the future would look back fondly on today's sets like people look back fondly on sets from the past that weren't received well. You didn't even answer that question. Instead, you engaged fallacy after fallacy based mostly on your emotional response. Emotions are not effective at answering questions. Not exactly the same thing, players buying and players wanting. Sales are not connected to want? Do you really believe people purchase frivolous luxury items because they don't want them? Wizards tried to put a bunch of really good cards in a set so that people would buy it? Is this really the first time they've done this, or is it their plan every time they make a set? If we wanted there to be no universes beyond, this stupid video is the rebuttal to the people running Wizards that would convince them that there's no real reason not to.
I stopped playing at Neon Dynasty. I’m happy. I miss it, but the. I look at the product. Maybe we just need to make EDHc (classic), only main sets… 🤷♀️ MTG=Capitalism a case study.
I thought the Godzilla and Transformers cards were cool, and they were the first new MtG cards I bought in a long time, but seeing the Phyrexians were in the story is what reignited my interest in playing Magic, not just collecting cards. Magic’s IP needs to face forward, not UB sets.
Lord of the Rings made sense as it's also a cornerstone of the fantasy genre. But I agree that magic's story should be at the forefront and universes beyond should be a small treat every couple of years
I’ve played magic for 30 years at this point (minus a brief break from around 03-06), and have been playing Final Fantasy even longer, having fallen in love with the franchise when FF released on the NES in the US. To say this this the most excited I’ve ever been for a set is a gross understatement. But… I can also selfishly want a set and at the same time think it’s bad for the game. I don’t mind crossovers, but I think secret lair drops are less dangerous for the overall health of the game.
Why all the complaining? It’s all our own fault. We buy Lord of the Rings like crazy and leave Karlov Manor on the shelves… 🤷♂️ We vote with our wallets.

Totally agree. I actually loved the Godzilla stuff because they were just alt arts of actual cards.
I’m not even a warhammer fan but I love the warhammer cards and I think that they fit very well into mtg

I haven't bought mtg official products since 2012 probably. Singles are obvious better

I will say, there's a really niche argument to be made that the volume of cards making it hard to keep track of what's out there DOES harken back to the original intent that you built decks with what you had and didn't necessarily know what your opponent might have.
This sucks. I have bought the 40k and LotR commander decks and sets but only because I grew up reading or being a part of those interests. I also have a job and a life outside of the MTG hobby.

4 normal sets and 2 beyond sets is still an insane amount of product each year. Mitch gotta cool it with the “worst news ever”
"fun is subjective i guess..." okay so its another "Grrr!! i dont like cross overs!!! magic is my game, i dont want new people to get into it!! >:("
I could not wrap my head around why you wanted dimir to be it's own format. Slow morning, I got there eventually.

Eventually, I think they will be forced to create a Universes Beyond Masters set with In Universe versions of cards from the various Universes Beyond sets.

well that's not "new" news, it's really happening since the introduction of Universes Beyond in one way or the another. two premiere set is not "half of magic".

Oh somebody call a whambulence. So long as they don't introduce new mechanics that are specific to those sets like the ring temps you where it doesn't make sense to print that text on cards outside of the set I'm all for new cards to play with and meme with
They are doing this waaaaay to much.
By 2030, we're going to have a 0 cost spell named "power creep" that says, "This spell can't be countered. You win the game. A deck can have any number of cards named power creep."
More likely its named something like "Thanos snap"
I find it actually difficult to NOT have infinite combo's in a deck nowadays. :D
Or just called "The Singularity" that reads "Soft lock the game." and nothing more. :)
@GrayVMhan nah Thanos snap is just going to be a reprint of Maddening Cacophony lmao
At instant speed too
MTG becoming a diet Weiß Schwarz is not something I would have expected when I started playing back in 2019.
That wasn't a set those were commander decks
I wouldn't be surprised if within two years or so people start making "only Universes Beyond" or "no Universes Beyond" decks, which leads to a new sub-format for each format.
My 2025 Pioneer "only Beyond" Naya midrange is going to be wild!
If they start printing UB into Pioneer, I am seriously gonna quit...
You even put the argument of the issue right there. xD
Let's see if you get it by yourself.
Feel free to disagree 👍
and there it is. this is quite literally not magic anymore
Maybe we can get commander rules committee to just ban the non-fantasy fitting universe beyond sets.
MtG veterans are basically yelling at every cloud that passes by at this point.
The Magic audience is young? The longest-running TCG ever? You sure? :/@@kendarsin
@@jaimerivera4332 How about instead of young I say immature. Will it get you to see my point then?
Young can mean young but it can also mean new as in just getting into magic.
By all means, I've been saying the same. These complaints are so... unnecessary.@@kendarsin
Its a bit much, not really a fan of universes beyond but i'm a big fan of Final Fantasy so yeah....
Then buy the effing FFTCG xD
@@neros_soren also a problem, not nearly as fun as Magic imo 🤣
@@r.a.w.780 Okay...Close to the same mechanics, less annoying resource system, and an IP you actually fangirl about. *shrugs*
@@neros_soren enjoy it less though, no format that feels like commander 🤷🏻 tried it a bit. Just like Magic better
Univers beyond should of remained as a secret layer product.
The whole marvel thing is going to be weird…. Idk how it would even fit into magic and its lore.
Wait until you hear about the other sets they’ve done like LOTR and transformers, those blend in perfectly
These crossovers help to make some things easier - they already have basic designs done, all they have to do is determine what to do with the card.
Hi Mitch! Thanks for your content
Hi! Thank you for watching!
can’t wait for the RuPaul crossover
Yea, not a fan of this move. You’re being hyperbolic about the “worst news ever” stuff, but it does suck that Hasbro is diluting the Magic IP.
I'm excited for the ff set. Mostly bc of ff7 being my favorite of the bunch.
I don't find this to be a problem if its done well.
_Twice a year?_ I could accept once every two or three years but what the cinnamon toast *F* is this?
You and the Professor should colab and just scream at the clouds together.
I don’t understand why they would be doing this. You can’t compare the profits off the LOTR release bc it’s LOTR. It’s an outlier in all cases. LOTR is the OG. There wouldn’t be magic without it. What other IPs could even come close? D&D was tragic.
It's not a big deal. I enjoy playing magic for the structure of the game and mechanics not the lore characters
Worsened by the fact that The one Ring makes Sheoldred busted.
it feels like they're PURPOSEFULLY doing exactly the opposite of what the customers ask, almost a s if to test how much shit they can get away with
I feel like LotR was an outlier.
Maybe we just need to make EDHc (classic), only main sets…
🤷♀️ MTG=Capitalism a case study.
We buy Lord of the Rings like crazy and leave Karlov Manor on the shelves… 🤷♂️ We vote with our wallets.
money changes things
