    Universes Beyond is banking off of someone else's IP to make a sponsored product. On paper, there's the potential to combine both audiences. But at the same time, it also feels like they're moving away from Magic the Gathering and making a different card game entirely.

    I still feel like Ikoria's Godzilla tie in and Transformers with Brother's War was the BEST way to do it: Collectible alternative arts of existing cards. And then, if it closely ties in, you can do sets and commander: Warhammer and LotR seem like good fantasy/sci fi fits. Dr Who... not so much.

    • @deathnights-bane3301
      @deathnights-bane3301 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      I mean, dr who fits with unfinty, war hammer is eh, lotr is just fantasy (not a fan of the race swapping), mlp is always charity stuff through secret lair, and jurassic park and ixalan makes sense. @danielreyns3540 i dunno, i think they all fit, i was not a fan of how wizards took it upon themselves to alter key lotr characters, i just think that for baulders gate that releasing it before the games out of early access is hasty, the rest of them fit in their own way, i dont really think anything is off limits for magic at this point with the exception of maybe mad max, but brothers war had a tone of robots, ikoria had kaiju, unfinity was a space theme so dr who is hardly a stretch, dinosaurs are a core race type by this point so jurassic park was gonna show up sooner or later, mlp is charity stuff so pull that apart if you want, the only one i dont get is marvel and final fantasy, and im desperately wondering why we dont have a destiny crossover yet.

    Honestly we need to go back to maybe 2-3 sets PER YEAR, there's just too much being released too quickly, people can't keep up, neither can their wallets.
    Hasbro needs to get it into their heads that MtG is a hobby/luxury purchase, we don't NEED to buy new packs and boxes every few months, I'm perfectly fine with skipping purchases for months on end if it means a thematic set I like eill be more accessible to me, without putting me out on the street because I can't afford the cost of living in my area.

      That's my biggest problem with it honestly. D&D I had no problem with. I like a lot of the cards from those sets because they still felt like they fit the style of MTG. Same with Lotr. I'm even mostly okay with Final Fantasy, since it kind of crosses the sci-fi and fantasy genres in a similar way to Neon Dynasty. But when we're making jumps to Doctor Who, Jurassic Park, Walking Dead, and the planned Marvel, it feels so out of left field for a game build on fantasy to include them when none of them overlap with high or low fantasy.

The rock between "so many cards that I don't care anymore" and "so many other games that I can play" will be the one Hasbro eventually kills Magic with. Look at Pathfinder vs Dungeons and Dragons 4th edition. That was just from one significant competitor. How many significant competing TCGs exist already? Erm...it literally is close to half of the cards printed? As he has even shown, ~400 of the ~2000 cards printed were from the LotR set. Considering they can't just up the set numbers by one, after firing a bunch of ppl from WotC, we can assume that the number of sets released that year will stay the same (as should number of new cards printed stay roughly the same), and the only thing that changes is, one more release being UB. Most sets released have between 300 and 400 cards on average. That bumps the number of UB cards released up to 800/2000. That's 40% and is an issue. even if we are being generous and assume that there will be much more reprints, just with UB art (let's make it 2/3 new cards for the sake of it), that still makes 600 cards not being Magic IP related. That's still ~30% of the cards.
      And let's be real here. If those set sell close to as well as LotR did, how long do you think it will take for Hasbro to demand a 3rd set to be UB? And a 4th after?

I think its clear that the majority of MTG players love the mechanics and flexibility of the game and not necessarily the IP. The main issue with this move is its another net new set that will release.

      Don't really think that's true. Magic players support Magic sets. Universes Beyond brings in TONS of new Timmy's that never played before pumping up sales numbers. The primary buyers of LotR at my local shop were all the new players that found out about Magic through the LotR set. Our player numbers nearly doubled from LotR alone and, as they are new, they are spending tons on that set (and subsequent Magic sets). I just think the numbers are padded by a lot of new players joining because of UB and it isnt that Magic players aren't buying the core sets.
      MH2 is the best selling Magic set of all time (supported by Magic players) and Kamigawa Neon Dynasty is the best selling Winter set of all time (supported by Magic players). Clearly the Magic IP is being supported by current Magic players. UB just has support as well seeing as LotR is the second best selling set of all time.

      @neros_soren 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      One issue with your mindset here: Go through the 4 main sets of the last year and count the cards that actually made an impact in the 4 biggest formats vs LotR.
      If you design the cards of UB to be so absurdly strong, that they are staples in 60 card formats, therefore increasing the EV by a ton, adding a 1/1 serial card that will make you a millionaire if you pull it, plus the thousands of people buying into Magic because of LotR (many of them only buying this set and not really playing the game).
      LotR was marketed way different than in universe sets.
      I mean, look at MKM. The newest set has around 5 cards that are actually played in Standard, Modern and Pioneer. And around 6/7 new cards that are played in Pauper.
      Why would you buy a display of MKM when the EV is just terrible, and you are better off buying the singles for 20 bucks?

    • @Helthurian
      @Helthurian 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@neros_soren My mindset is that the majority of Magic players value cards based on utility vs the Magic IP. Which, demonstrates how weak the IP is. In Pokemon they just print a cool art version of an already existing Charizard worth $0.10 and people will chase it. Why? Their IP is strong so people actually care what card they're buying, not the utility. You proved my point. The majority of existing MTG players love the mechanics, the majority of potential new players care more about IP. So, you either have to grow the IP which is much more risky or use already established ones. Watch, Magic will boom with Marvel, Fallout, Final Fantasy, etc.

    • @neros_soren
      @neros_soren 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Helthurian And you count that "majority" on what? Your opinion? And no, Pokemon has chase cards, because they don't pringle, there are actually low rarity of the same card, AND the IP holds value.

      Not even to mention, that there is a whole lot of people who bought into LotR because of the IP and never played a game of Magic after. So yeah, the sales for future UB will be great, but it will not be as much of a boost for the playerbase.

This marks a new era for magic, and most of the playerbase isn’t bothered by it (see Jake&Joel’s poll about it).

    I started playing after years of my friends trying to convince me because of the transformers cards.
    When I joined I got my siblings in, their significant others and my fiancé. 8 people including myself began playing because of the universes beyond.
    I love magic now and I don’t even use the transformer cards anymore outside of slicer.
    I understand the hesitation but you can rule 0 only magic characters, or rule 0 a specific set so I don’t see the downside.
    The game as a whole is getting way to many new cards each year but that’s not just a universes beyond problem that’s a magic as a whole problem

      @@chestnutmouse6823 Well, LOTR wasn’t too bad… it was weird for everyone at first. I think it’s becoming a thing where maybe wizards is running out of ideas and kinda wants to explore with other IP’s in attempt to monetize, but not continuously become more creative with what magic is really all about. After all, magic has always had it’s own lore.

    These crossovers help to make some things easier - they already have basic designs done, all they have to do is determine what to do with the card.

    I actually prefer them printing Universes Beyond to the alternative, which would probably be more masters and legends set instead. I feel the problem many players are facing is having all these cards printed. 2000 cards in a year are too many. It`s set after set after holiday edition after set after secret lair after set....
    The worst part: I want to play with all those cards! Most seem like fun. But even if I had the money, there`s just not enough time to!
    Fall sick for a month and you might miss a whole set, including a whole limited metagame experience.
    I wish they would slow down and let us enjoy playing with the cards for a few weeks.
    But it`s all about the money so Hasbro be printing cards.
    If anything, I think UB make skipping a set easier.

    I harken back to a time when our game was more niche. They didn't make a lot of cards but they made enough. We had time to appreciate every change to our little game and had the chance to grab the same booster packs to find what was established as the meta and the chase cards for at least the better part of the year. Fans of the lore had the time to theorycraft the story of the latest sets and find out what happened to our favorite characters. It was... MAGIC.
    Now... It's just Magic The cashgrabbering. They just churn out more and more disposable product without care about the community within and just slap on whatever is vaguely geeky and sell it at a ludicrous markup. It's like the Big Bang Theory. It's geek-face to try and squeeze profit of people who love things that represent quirky and creative things.

    I understand why people don’t like universes beyond, but 40K and LoTR cards did the work to actually finally pull me in. My dad was into magic in college and so I grew up staring at white borders, but I never got all the way in. Later on when I was freshly out of highschool a friend of mine got me some cards and I had some fun with it but it didn’t quite do it for me.
    Very recently my friends talked me into commander, and because I am a huge fan of both Tolkien and Warhammer 40,000, it was really easy for me to take that dive and actually get emotionally(and financially) invested in Magic: The Gathering. In the last couple months I’ve dived head first into the lore and playstyles and cards. Although I suppose you can’t blame it entirely on universes beyond , there’s no denying that it has played an incredibly important part in my magic journey.

    I don’t understand why they would be doing this. You can’t compare the profits off the LOTR release bc it’s LOTR. It’s an outlier in all cases. LOTR is the OG. There wouldn’t be magic without it. What other IPs could even come close? D&D was tragic.

    I don’t like the crossovers, that doesn’t mean I don’t like the properties. Didn’t buy a single pack of lotr set, mtg has incredible ip, and it should be developed. The fact that lotr and warhammer being better sets is to cover the cost of using those IP? Mtg ip should be first and best, which should make wotc and Hasbro more profit.

    I don't understand all the hate for Universes Beyond. In all fairness I am new to MTG so perhaps I don't understand, but the LoTR set was the only reason my friend was able to get me into Magic was for my love of that franchise. Since then I've gotten into the game even more and learned more about the wider lore, but with Universes Beyond it's just another way to expand your player base. I have a few friends started picking up cards and making decks for the same reason after I did. One friend is so into 40k he bought every precon.

    • @neros_soren
      @neros_soren 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So, you like the lore of MTG, right? You know that the lore got thinner and thinner over the last couple of years? How big of a chance do think there will be, for the lore to actually expand if the big selling point of MTG in the future will be UB? And that's the issue people have with it. It's not UB. It's that the original identity and lore suffers even more than it has been already.
      UB is not an issue in a vacuum, it is however an issue if it is pushed like LotR was. The powerlevel of some cards in that set is absurd. The landcycle commons are played pretty much in every format they are legal in. The one ring is close to being busted, and can't be banned, because of how expensive it is. Bowmasters is a staple in pretty much every black deck in every format it is legal in.
      And now compare it to the Standard legal sets. If you do not keep up with 60 card formats, because you only play Commander is my guess.
      Guess how many high powerlevel cards were in the last couple of sets? On average 5 with most of them being uncommons. And now tell me, how those sets are meant to compete, sales wise.
      And because they under perform in sales, guess what happens if there is a mythic in the set that IS a staple? Exactly...Sheoldred happens. You end in a card being 80 bucks because it only has a 1/8 chance to be in a pack, and is played as a 2-3 off in most black decks from Standard-Modern. Worsened by the fact that The one Ring makes Sheoldred busted.

  • @gothfalcon

    I personally think that the Lord of the Rings crossover was a very bad thing for Magic. It was inflated pricing for a long time because people were gambling to try to get the one ring because it was guaranteed to be able to sell for over $1 mil. Then after it finally got found, the pricing dropped to reasonable. And so many people bought much more than they would have just to try to get that one card. And if they keep doing the "one unique art" style card, it will end up doing the same thing of hurting people wanting to buy when it first comes out because people are going to gamble again.

    I'd prefer that they hadn't done Universes Beyond as well, but this video is a series of inane arguments against it. First of all, the Quarterly report was good news.
    Secondly, the question asked whether people in the future would look back fondly on today's sets like people look back fondly on sets from the past that weren't received well. You didn't even answer that question. Instead, you engaged fallacy after fallacy based mostly on your emotional response. Emotions are not effective at answering questions.
    Not exactly the same thing, players buying and players wanting. Sales are not connected to want? Do you really believe people purchase frivolous luxury items because they don't want them?
    Wizards tried to put a bunch of really good cards in a set so that people would buy it? Is this really the first time they've done this, or is it their plan every time they make a set?
    If we wanted there to be no universes beyond, this stupid video is the rebuttal to the people running Wizards that would convince them that there's no real reason not to.

    I thought the Godzilla and Transformers cards were cool, and they were the first new MtG cards I bought in a long time, but seeing the Phyrexians were in the story is what reignited my interest in playing Magic, not just collecting cards. Magic’s IP needs to face forward, not UB sets.

    I’ve played magic for 30 years at this point (minus a brief break from around 03-06), and have been playing Final Fantasy even longer, having fallen in love with the franchise when FF released on the NES in the US. To say this this the most excited I’ve ever been for a set is a gross understatement. But… I can also selfishly want a set and at the same time think it’s bad for the game.
    I don’t mind crossovers, but I think secret lair drops are less dangerous for the overall health of the game.
