Omg I just watched this and I can’t believe I’m in the video!! It was so cool to see you in person and watch you throw on the wheel. Thank you for saying those nice things about me. :-)
When, like me you’ve been throwing pots for 40 years you will appreciate being able to throw sitting down.use a chair on wheels .so you can move back and forth.use a chair with a back ,so you can lean back to study what you’ve made or rest.use a mirror if it helps to see what you’re doing.lower your chair,or raise your wheel so your angle of bend is reduced.try and centre with your stomach muscles pulling the clay towards your belly, not your shoulders which makes you lean over too far. And don’t worry about not selling,it’s not your pots it’s the wrong venue.
Too bad you didn’t sell a ton. I just don’t think regular people understand what goes in to our art and don’t understand our prices. And just don’t appreciate it like we hope they would. It looked like fun though! I would love to go throw in public! That would be fun! Peace out man!
Professor Frank I’m sorry you feel that way. I’m just taking what Jon is teaching and putting in to practice. I’m just a small home potter looking for my style and I believe we all get inspiration from somewhere. I’m sorry if my work bothers you or if you feel like it’s “plagiarized” I create most of my glazes myself and Jon has been kind enough to share with us a few others. I would hope that you would be flattered if someone took inspiration from you.
Professor Frank I believe your absolutely right some would be fine with being copied and others would not. Jon is making tutorials on how he glazes, throws and all aspects of his work. What’s the purpose of that but to teach and show others how to do it. That’s all I’m doing is following his teachings. Im sure there are many many others that do the same but it bothered you that I posted a video of my “copied” work. Is that right?
I'm sorry you were shamed like that! I would LOVE to see your video! I happen to be drawing a LOT of inspiration from Jon's videos as I am just finding a passion for pottery. I'm about to order a bunch of stuff, but trying to figure out how to tell what brand glazes I should use. Want to make sure they're safe!

Lots of LOVE from INDIA 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘
I’ve thrown in the local mall years ago. Many people watching. More watched me pull handles. So you may not have the greatest sales that day, but when you least expect it someone will buy from you and mention they saw you at the mall. I use old coolers to transport wetware, green ware If the seal is still good but the cooler looks like crap it will keep your clay from freezing. Then place old rug or blanket over long enough where it cover the top and bottom meet
Unlucky Jon, I thought you would have sold a bunch. It's correct what you say, most people that go to a Mall are not looking for bespoke one of a kind works of art! They are looking for the usual Christmas churned out commercial (crap?) you know what I mean. Never mind, if you didn't try you would always have thought it was an opportunity missed. It's all a learning curve, and a lesson for any other potter out there. Nice video though Jon. Cheers Bob 🇬🇧
Well, experience and learning is never wasted you tried it and learned more about your customer base. Merry Christmas to you and your family may you experience the joy and hope of this holy season.
Live and learn! Your following is growing by the day and I’m glad to see that Etsy sales were great for this year. My friends received their jonthepotter mugs today and LOVE them. Thanks, man!
I would love to see a video reviewing different tools, and especially different textures they can create. Like Dolan, Kemper, Diamondcore, Zebra, etc. I haven't been able to find a place that really shows different uses and techniques for many different types and brands of tools. Love you videos!
Your videos are so good! So funny. When you said, these pots have about a 50/50 chance of surviving lol and were okay with that. Your family is beautiful and supportive so that's pretty cool.
Happy to hear your Etsy shop sold out for 2018! I agree, there are certain venues for handmade crafts. Definitely not a mall! Hey, you live and learn. You wouldn’t know unless you try it.
You could also do fairs. So like here in the small town I live in, Erin TN, they hold one of the top 10 St Patrick’s Day celebrations in the country. There’s people here that sell their stuff and pottery is one of them. Not sure if there’s a lot of selling but I do buy a lot of hand crafted things from celebrations like that. So maybe that’s something you can look into.
Check it off on your bucket list. 😉 Hopefully you got a lot of good exposure to people at the mall who may check out your TH-cam channel and then go to your Etsy store and buy something. Love seeing your family, Ryder is getting so big. Beautiful snow scenery!
I've been going to craft fairs here in the UK with my handmade glass for about six years, and more recently with my pottery too, people who go to the fairs do go to buy handmade but selling in our local town earlier this month didn't go as well as the fairs do. At fairs prices are respected because buyers appreciate skill and time but in towns most people just want a low price. Its an interesting exercise though.
I have found the same to be true in my experience as well. We have worked both fairs and have a storefront. I can consistently get paid for my full price at the vendor events, but if someone walks in the store they expect Walmart prices for my handcrafted goods.
A new experience! but totally agree, malls are probably not the ideal place. Love watching your video's all the way from Montreal, Canada! I've been doing pottery for 5 years now & just got myself an old 1973 wheel for x-mas (from my boyfriend :)). btw, I tried to find your mugs on Etsy...however never found (there's loads of pages), unless you don't ship in Canada? Thanks for sharing your video's, it's giving great ideas :)
Love the videos. Suggestion - Next time you are demo-ing mark the pieces you make and sell them unfinished. In my opinion they would love buying the pottery they watched you making. Ship them when done. I demo ed a few times years ago and they were asking me outright to do that set up. I was a new potter and didn't get to try it out, so as a suggestion perhaps it will be one to serve you well. >Smiles< Hoping to get back into pottery soon.
malls are good for jewelry, but bad for potters. Regular craft/art shows with low entry fees are the way to go. Your set up is really great looking. Keep up the great work and wonderful videos. I've learned a lot watching you.
Hey... Have been binge watching all ur viddeos from the past few days. Love ur content. I myself have been considering doing pottery as a practice. Hope i can make it. Lots of love from India...
You should try selling at the Minneapolis Farmer's Market, if you don't already. Or the Minnesota State Fair, as well as Iowa's State Fair--we have folks from all over the world come to Iowa just for our state fair!
I have to agree that people don't understand what goes into a completed piece of pottery, my Sunday consisted of thoroughly cleaning 24 bisque fired pieces, and then brushing on wax resist to the bottoms, then mixing up all the different colors of glaze and test some with a hydrometer and for the next 7 hours with very detailed glazing by dipping some and painting others all the while writing very detailed recipes so I can duplicate results if something works out that I want to do it more. and then I had to mix up some clear because when building out me nice little studio in the furnace room I broke the glass jar of clear. listening to Miles Davis on Bose speaker is the only thing that makes this tolerable. I brought everything in 3 trips up stair across the deck and thought the woods to the shop in the back and loaded the kiln for another 1/2 hour. and fired it this morning. Long day and by the grace of the all mighty I will have a nice Christmas Morning doing the unload. Merry Christmas to all!
It's incredible to me that people will spend their money to buy vanilla items from corporations, and make them billions, but wont buy directly from an artist and support local.
I was looking for your etsy shop (searching several different permutaions of jon the potter, other things I thought it might be, etc.) and I thought I'd let you know I just didn't find it. If you linked your etsy shop in the description of your videos, "about" section of your channel, or somewhere else, I'd love to see it. I'm sure other fans feel the same way. :)
I have looked at selling at a large show but always hesitate. It's at least $5000 CAN to get in and there are a LOT of potters there every year so I don't know how you could make money to make it worth it. It's always good for getting your name out there though! And an amazing memory. I got my glaze kiln at home opened. Wasn't amazing like your stuff but nothing ran too much!
@@rebeccamsauve There must be other, shorter, more focused shows that are far less expensive! Are you familiar with Zapplication.org? Idk if they list shows only in the States, but it's an excellent resource! Good luck!
Not crazy bout mall shopping either. The general public just doesn’t understand pottery or art. They don’t care if it’s original and will go to Walmart and buy from China before buying original art. Fortunately Art fairs are filled with people who appreciate. Sorry it didn’t go as expected. 😔 I always just chalk up stuff like that to learning and an experience, that I wouldn’t want to repeat.
