Can Confucianism Save the World? Reflections by Three Contemporary Political Thinkers

  • Confucianism has recently become quite prominent again in China, and has never ceased to be prominent in many other countries. Some of its most distinguished advocates have in recent years produced highly insightful works intended for the modern world. Has the time come for a large-scale reception of Confucianism at the global stage? World leaders have enormous difficulties to cooperate in order to solve global problems with the ever increasing technological abilities we have at hand. So we must ask: Can Confucianism save the world? The three political philosophers on this panel are Bai Tongdong, Daniel Bell and Joseph Chan. They develop Confucianism in rather different ways, and the purpose of this panel is to explore how they do that, and how they respectively think Confucianism may save the world. The panel is moderated by a fourth political philosopher, Mathias Risse.

    confucian is a great sage
he realized that law is useless tool for maintaining stability.
he disagree with legalist view that law backed by punishment was effective
see what happen in areas where social order broke down, authorities been powerless, lack of law enforcement
the rise of violation of law
because people follow the law because they are afraid of punishment
once punishment cant been delivered, then whole legal system has broke down.
this led to rise of crime.

Ironically, China became a legalist state that codified Confucian values into law, which leads to this gem:
If a son does not rat on his father's crimes, he shall receive the same punishment to one lesser degree for being an accessory to the crime.
If a son does rat on his father, he shall receive the same punishment to one greater degree, for disobeying Confucian values and violating filial piety.

100% pure democracy, as said by Americans themselves, is dangerous. Such democracy may work for the western societies but may not for Asian societies. One has to take into account the Asian histories spanning thousands of years and their cultures. Take China for example, central government has worked very well for them since ancient days.

In a way, moralistic governments are more tyrannical than legalistic ones, because in 1984, at least those few cubic centimeters inside your head belonged to you. In a moralistic government, not even a wrong thought can be thought.

    why confucian is great
1.people follow the law because people are afraid of punishment - such teaching is wrong, unhealthy
    2. people follow the law because they know what is proper conduct, what is improper conduct
    3. when people break the law because they feel shame on your behavior.
such shame (sense of guilt) led them to rectify their wrong behavior and go back to proper conduct.
    for instance,
muslim dont eat pork because of " the shame " ( sense of guilt )for not following their religion.
muslim dont eat pork not because law say so and backed with punishment
moral obligation works much better than " legal obligation.
in event of social disorder, govt has collapse, disaster happen, or lack of enforcement, law is useless because no " punishment"
but moral obligation would make them to be " mindful of their behavior at all times even if there are no authorities, no law". no punishment because of " shame " or knowledge about what is proper conduct.

    • @alana295
      @alana295 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As Confucius said, "Guide the people with edicts, keep them in line with punishments then the people will stay out of trouble but will have no sense of shame. Guide the people with virtue, keep them in line with the rites (proper conduct) then besides having a sense of shame they will reform themselves." This is logical since we cannot legislate Morality. It is an unwritten law that is "imperceptible, yet irresistible". China and the Soviet Union under the Bolsheviks are Gov'ts of personalities rather than rules and in this aspect HONOR must exist among its Leaders.

I think diversity is a beautiful and interesting way to live.... the reason why conflicts happen is because of lack of global knowledge and solutions for earths suffering! 🌎 Minimalism mindfulness interconnectedness of all beings. Humanity needs to give back to the earth, the earth needs compassion the earth needs feeding back, humanity has been taking earths evolution, the evolution that made possible for life on earth. It doesn't matter if humanity conform to the moments rules or not! It's those who lead that need to educate their citizens about the destruction of the earths evolutionary layers! Oil and gas are nessersery layers that earth needs herself. Just like all life that grew from earths energy and matter. If you destroy the layers of the human skin from the inside out and the outside we would die. Earths crust needs rebuilding internally and externally. If humanity takes care of the health of the planet then the mental health of humanity will improve too. Abusing earth our first mother is Abusing all life including ourselves.

Their difference the former rely on the rule of philosophy king, the later focus on 內圣外王,修齐治平以中和天下。和而不同之奧,在于以道相合,理一分殊,大同而治。故其成不仅在于圣贤之治,理事双融;且在于教化天下贤其贤、亲其亲,天堂在人间。其质在合the Son of God (天子)与 Son of Man 为一。此天人合一,自能成己成物,己、家、国、天下和而不同,individualism 与 universalism 并行不悖。美中各偏一极故能相融,只此相融須由「修悟內来,非外构可成」。

Confucius thinking to behave in the society. It is not a politics. There is no development of Confucius thinking. It is 2000 old stuff and limited relevance to How and What China is China Today. In ancient time, ruling class is the law. Law is tool used by the ruling class. The fundamental difference is if the law becomes independent item of politics, China will be more healthier, efficient and predictable. That is the missing link between China and West. The problem with confucianism is that it doesn't present technical or ideological details for how to deal with problems.
It's wisdom is too general, and contingent.
It may work as a reference for morality.. but not Political theory.

Confucianism lays down the base for governance where emperors, generals, magistrates, presidents, etc. extrapolate from. It is ethical, humanistic, philosophical. There is no god, only "tian" which can be loosely defined as the sky, the heaven, the cosmos, some kinda force, energy. It is unlike the US Constitution where the rules are stipulated in details, and still has so many flaws. Confucianism contrasts greatly with European gods based, religion based, rules based mindset, with a imaginary all knowing humanlike being that exists somewhere in the "void", and is the "guide" for governance and social rules, norms according to the power that be's interpretation. Europeans impose their beliefs on others, because their god is infallible. This is the root cause of thousands of years of wars. The feud between Catholics and protestants is one example.

    • @goingmonotheist783

@@fredtan1506 actually the concept of tian is a very monotheistic concept..
      It's not just "sky".. k~
It's Philosophy actually gives it as much agency/ concern for moral/ political issues as the Abrahamic God has.
The only difference is that you don't have a prescription tian recommends you follow that's assigned..
(Though technically you do, and that's part what confucianism is indirectly all about. With the idea of keeping your mandate of heaven)
The Abrahamic God is no guy floating in a void. There's supposed to be nothing like him, and you're not supposed to imagine him/ comprehend what he's like.
The only reason he is depected the way you described Is because roman pagans, and their descendants (christians) anthropomorphize God..
And because unlike the chinese angel of deal with tian that doesn't speak through people to explain it's will.. the Abrahamic God didnt leave that to Philosophy alone.
So, people imagine him as a more proactive agent.. Like us..
The reason for wars is not Monotheism.. it's ignorance, and people having not gotten (ironically) the Philosophical dimension of it.
We both (east and west) ought to combine our strong points, and perfect Monotheism..
      The providence of God..
      Not men ✓
That's the whole point of the heavenly mandate/ sharia/ mitzvah anyway.

+John Kenney It's nearly impossible to kick an incumbent out of office, which is why we have term limits for the President: if we didn't, it would basically become a lifelong appointment (or at least, an appointment until the President gets tired of being President and stops running). This is also largely why Congress is the way it is: there are no term limits, so we get the same people in office for decades on end. The reason incumbents are so difficult to defeat is just that humans (not just Americans) fear and distrust change, and tend to take an attitude of "better the devil you know than the devil you don't" when voting for government officials.
All this is to say that I don't think the fact that we didn't manage to kick George Bush out after his first term is a particularly strong argument against democracy in general.
