Madness on High Seas: Exploring the South China Sea (2014) | Foreign Correspondent

  • Eric Campbell takes us on a journey to a place few outsiders ever get to experience - the place some say could be the trigger for the world's next major conflict - the Spratly Islands, smack bang in the middle of the oil-rich South China Sea.
    In an Australian television exclusive, he catches a series of boats to reach the remote chain of islands and coral reefs that are claimed by no fewer than six countries - China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei.
    Many of the so called "islets" are simply specks of submerged rock in the middle of nowhere, but have been built up by competing nations over the years in order to bolster their claims of ownership.
    There are military forces from different countries living on different islands, often within shouting distance of each other.
    They're probably the most contested islands in the world. It's believed the undersea bed in the region is rich in oil and gas, it's an important shipping lane, and there are vast fishing grounds to be exploited.
    "We call our island group the submerged Saudi Arabia of the Philippines", the mayor of one island tells Foreign Correspondent. Mayor Eugenio Bito-onon runs a municipality with just 150 residents - Kalayaan, which means Freedomland in the local language.
    Posing as fishermen, Campbell and his crew go to Ayungin Shoal, where besieged marines live on a rusting, scuttled ship on the submerged reef.
    Chinese maritime forces attempt to stop them in a high-speed chase.
    The crew managed to reach the shallow coral before the vessels could block them.
    They found a group of hungry marines living on fish they catch on the reef as Chinese ships circle the reef 24 hours a day.

They are circumnavigating Australia's Northern Neighbours lending these impoverished Nations millions of dollars knowing they can never repay the loan. Idiot's in Canberra are doing nothing for fear of upsetting these Raiders. It will eventually come to a head, the only one in the world that is standing up to China is the United States, in Australia Politicians and Government are terrified upsetting the Chinese will collapse our economy, the question that is not being asked, how can one of the richest resource Countries in the World be put in such a position by the Chinese?.

    Well done to Eric and ABC Australia for highlighting what the 6 nations are doing concerning the heavily disputed Spratly Islands.
    Sadly very few people really care what is going on because they have their own problems at home unless of course you live in the area or there is an oil tanker crash and everything, all the reefs and the fish in this delicate eco system are wiped out by an oil slick.
    Yet the eco system is being trashed by the Chinese anyway with their 24/7 remodelling of the ocean floor, surely this is what the United nations are for which is to protect the environment so why not declare that the entire place a world heritage site and protect it for future generations.
    This is all quite ironic especially when you look back to the days of the British and their empire building in previous centuries, when they were land grabbing and taking valuable resources and turning them into cash.
    As for the small detachment of Philippine Marines on the scuttled ship, we can only imagine what they must do day after day and what happens to their non disposable waste, the plastic wrappings of their supply parcels and all their poo and wee that builds up day after day, I doubt that it's stored on their rust bucket of a ship, presumably it all goes into the delicate and sensitive surroundings.

    • @petergambier
      @petergambier 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @mas360 The trouble is that they don't want to start a conflict with anybody that might fight back, but you are right they should protect the whole area and I thought that was what the UN was for.

      The constitution limits military funding after despot Marcos was overthrown . Kinda like Japan after ww2 and even when demoncrats wants to rid of 2nd amendment rights in 🇺🇸. They were trying to improve social services before military. They need both - it’s years of mismanagement, corruption after ph got its independence. They also suffer from brain drain like what is happening in hk but the real tragedy is the disintegration of family as most mothers works as domestic workers outside ph since ph could not attract foreign investments due to the high level of corruption in ph. PH is indeed a paradise lost. Sometimes I feel that it would have thrived better like hk if 🇺🇸 never left like Guam . Much like HK not wanting to be under communist 🇨🇳 CCP, PH faces same threat as HK due to high debt from communist 🇨🇳 and really bad governance by 💩du30

    I don't know why the only airlift things once a month. They could air drop a lot of things very close to the ship so that the Chinese couldn't stop them. They could use faster boats like 'cigarette racers'. They might be able to move a barge into position next to the ship in the middle of the night. Just some thoughts.

      @mas360 No, China doesn't own any of them, but as they got a far bigger economy, airforce and navy there are not much the rest can do as long as they not standing together.
      Vietnam needs Brahmos missiles and the will to use it against Chinese ships and bases in Vietnamese territorial waters, the Philippines need a new government that are willing to stand up to China and to have more US help to do so. Malaysia needs to support the other two.
      But first, they all need to agree on who own witch islands. Unbelievable that they all don't see that their division are the reason the PLA navy can get away with what they are doing.
      India, Thailand and the US need to enforce a naval blockade against CCP China.

    • @mwtrolle
      @mwtrolle 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @mas360 But Vietnam can't battle the PLA Navy in the open sea, their subs can at best deny the complete control if they dare to fire that is. Vietnam need Brahmos missiles to even the ods.
      Singapore has the biggest navy of any Southeast Asian countries. They are not that far behind Thailand in airpower to.
      Indonesia has a bigger military spending then Vietnam, but they are less capable I believe.

    • @mwtrolle
      @mwtrolle 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @mas360 They possibly could in India joined in. Anyway, they could blockade all ships to CCP China and hurt them immensely. If China came to them and they had the advantage of shorter supply lines, ground-based planes, missiles, and radar systems, the PLA nave would be in trouble. If the US joins in with its allies it's not even a contest.

  • @navajyotichetia3211

    The deployments are not military personnel, but actually uniformed and armed economists. This is because unless detailed exploratory survey is not made whether the oil and gas presence is economically viable of not cannot be known. Geological indication of oil and gas is useless until detailed study is done and no nation could do that this far it seems. Fish is oil for the mouth and stomach. So the most the uniformed military economists are achieving is the fishing potential
    But of course situated so far out at sea - a linear distance far exceeding even the land area of those countries, most reasonably the reefs, atolls and islands belong to none, these are squatters and occupiers. So perhaps let them armed uniformed military economists continue to run into each other

      Here in America where free speech is the biggest deal ever, rightly so, we really don’t know what to do because all social media companies are censoring viewers in various ways. It truly is a a nightmare. The algorithms Google uses manipulates the search results. A Harvard researcher has estimated these manipulations could affect our elections but 2-10 million votes. It’s estimated that last election millions of votes were steered to Hillary.

      @@jennymisteqq695 If that true, it just goes to show, that no mater how much google, facebook and microsoft pushes some candidate, the people vote will prevail and people are getting smarter every day. I don't think social media will have an as great effect again, this next election, what will have an greater effect, is independent civilians letting their voice be heard, either on youtube or other platforms. And in there lays my biggest feat.. People idolize people. So if eg. Logan Paul goes out and says vote for Bernie, i think it will influence more votes than any adjustments to an algorithm ever would. And that scares we, because it's easier to corrupt a single influencer and his team, than it's is to corrupt 10.000+ programmers and engineers to probe and adjust a search algorithm to an subjective choice.
