NorthVolt makes Li ion NMC batteries. This is now obsolete, since everyone is switching to LFP batteries, which last ~10X longer.

Yea right... This project has pretty much turned out to be a large scam and riddled with issues.

Nothingburger. They have thousands of employees, and sad fact is, everybody dies. No connections to the factory have been found.

So far 3 mysterious deaths have occurred involving employees at Northvolt.
The cause of death has not yet been determined and an investigation is still ongoing, but everyone worked for Northvolt, So one can wonder how environmentally friendly and human-friendly it really is.

The only reason why this factory still exists is because the Swedish state has put in a lot of money in the form of direct subsidies, cheap loans and state guarantees. Behind this company is cynical businessmen that take advantage of the naive attitude amongst politicians. They start a company with minimal investments then sell the idea to politicians under the flag of green energy. When subsidies and guarantees are in place they hype up the idea on the stock market and sell their own shares when the stock price gets high. Is there anyone who still remember Enron? When the debt gets high enough the politicians will guarantee more money to save their own face. The video mentions recycling of ammonia and salts but what about methylcloride? This is an extremely poisonous gas that is used in the mane factoring of batteries. It is oalso very flammable. The Chinese are now planning to build a battery factory in Eskilstuna, Sweden. In the application for license to build this factory they have also release 900 tons a year of this chemical. How environmental friendly is that? Since the gas consists of chloride connections are we back to destroy the ozone layer again? Not so long ago I read an article regarding statically unusual number of deaths among workers at the Nortvolt factory. These are unexpected deaths and a good reason to wonder if there is a connection to the working environment.

Most companies lose money for the first few years, it would be nice to see them succeed and show others greed is not the only way to thrive!

The company can very well go bankrupt within a short time. They have failed in a catastrophic matter to scale up production and have already lost important customers.

Northvolt seems to be a failure!
A sequence of bad news: from three dead workers, delays in battery production, the factory in Borlänge won't be built, BMW has retracted their big battery order because of non-delivery.
All that, and we know that battery prices are lower than expected, which would be bad even if they could produce them.
No, this is as far from revolutionary as one can get.
My guess, and that of the Swedish business press, is that it will end really bad!
But first, they will try to get someone to throw some more money into the pit!

It’s nice Sweden figured out how to reprocess batteries all be it on a small scale. Their plant could have made a lot of money if the battery combination was a viable product. But the four ingredients do not last as long as stated and they still cause thermal runaway.
But if they paid cash for the plant. In not more than 10 years the right combination will be developed. It will be solid state with a combination of cobalt, graphene and silicon. They have built this battery in the lab. Production requires a new manufacturing process to expedite the process. I saw a test stand where they extracted power from the battery and drilled a hold through the battery. It kept extracting power and exhibited not thermal runaway. They think they will be ready in three years. I predict it will be closer to ten. But it will be a battery with long range on charge. It will be lighter, it can be charged quickly. It can be made cheaper than current battery’s being used. Good luck to Sweden.

Yes mate you stick to your 60 litres of highly flammable petrol carted around until you burned it all even then fumes are lethal in an empty tank
So who guarantees that ? . Try to learn about evs a bit more and battery tech and stop believing the crapmongers

Manufacturing batteries like this is the furthest thing from "green"

Fossil fuels are much further from green! All mining, refining, all efforts / damage needed to transform the whole world to renewables with batteries is about as much as the effort / damage that we currently do for six months worth of coal production. Or, about eight months of oil production. And we are doing both the oil and the coal damage at the same time, both get replaced by the renewables which have very low continuous cost once installed. Free fuel and maintenance and replacement costs (lower than initial install as mentioned above) which are super low as compared to just the fuel cost on the fossil side.

Close to 90% of the petrol car's lifetime emissions are due to the combustion of fuel (fuel that cannot be reused). The battery pack in the electric car, on the other hand, is reused over and over every day, and the raw materials can in the future be produced close to 100% renewable, and eventually recycled.

The LFP batteries are less power dense. They take up more space and weight for a similar amount of power as an NMC battery. Plenty of demand for both of these kinds of cells as well as for many other chemistries and form factors. There is a lot of demand for the batteries that this factory produces and they can alter their production lines in the future as needed.

Different but not better. They have advantages but also disadvantages, so it's depends more of your situation. Personally, they are not for me who doesn't have possibility to charge at home, because they require to be charged at 100% at least every week and it is way too long when you have to wait for it on a public charger. And they have less density and density is what you need when traveling, if you have a home you can charge à 100 % all night and finally have the same amount of energy than the others at 80 % but it not when you need it. And anyway with another battery you also can charge at home at 100 % before to leave if you go on a trip, and have a lot more energy available for the same size. It's less expensive though but unless you have a home it's can be seen as a regression, and you will regret this economy when you are gonna have to wait hours on public chargers to get the 100 %.
