- In this video I replace both a heat exchanger and a condenser fan motor. I show the complete job on the heat exchanger, from start to finish. #hvac #hvacguy #hvaclife #hvactechnician #fieldpiece #hvactech #hvacinstall #rheem #milwaukeetools #acrepair #heatexchanger
This guy really seems like an honest down to earth dude.
If your wife wants to know what you were doing all day you have the proof with these videos! You should get a teaching job at a tech school! You would make a great teacher with your experience!
Thank you for being the person you are. And for being a teacher.
That’s much appreciated.
@@HVACGUY Curtis is amazing. Seriously my hvac idol
That was a big rusty job! I keep boxes of sheet metal screws around because I always lose one or two😀
The sharpie marks are always handy the next time. I got in the habit of always checking the new capacitors and scribble the values and date at install so I can remember that too. Thanks for the Video!👌
The fact you were able to do all this is awesome.
Great videos. I believe I would have sold them a new Gaspack,or walked away from that job.Good job.
R22 system. They would definitely been getting a new system
Great work Curtis. Always enjoying your videos.
House filled with smoke within minutes of turning on the furnace. Good test for my smoke alarms. They worked! Turned off the furnace immediately including the gas valve leading to it, but I wasn't sure where the smoke was coming from, as it seemed to be spread out evenly through the house. I'd used the furnance the week before no problem. If my family was home, I'd have cleared everyone out of the house & called the fire department immediately, but I took a quick look in, around, & under the house & saw no flames & determined, that it must be the furnace "rolling out". Opening doors & windows, the smoke began to dissipate., so I didn't call the fire department. Instead, I continued to look around. When I was reasonablely sure, that no more smoke was being generated, I took the cover off the furnace & saw a rusty mess including holes around where the burners go into the heat exchanger. It seems like we just got this furnance, but it may be 8 or 10 years old. Time flies.
Anyway, I googled "furnace heat exchanger" or something like that, & this video came up. The funny thing is, my furnace is the exact model featured in this video! It must be common for this Rheem combination unit's heat exchanger to fail. Talk about planned obsolescence! They went to the expense to have stainless steel heat exchanger tubes, but backed them with ordinary sheet metal. For the price of a stainless steel cookie sheet, they could have had a much safer & durable product. What makes it suck even more, is being a combination unit, it's extra costly to replace the whole unit with a better quality one, since I'd be replacing both the air conditioning & furnace. So, I suppose, I'll order a new heat exchanger & fix it, knowing it'll fail in 5 to 8 years. Of course, by then, the AC compressor will likely be worn out, so I'll need to replace the whole unit anyhow.
Seems like, funances used to last much longer, at least as far as their main fundamental parts, like heat exchangers, & I'd just need to change out a sensor from time to time? I'd feel better, if this unit was fail safe. I thought, that all modern furnaces were supposed to be fail safe? If I had been asleep or not at home to turn off the gas & circut breaker, I could have died from smoke inhalation or come home to a smoking crater! Maybe, the roll out protection sensors/switches would have turned it off eventually, but it sure didn't seem like they were going to!
Sorry for being long winded. Just venting (no pun intended).
After reading the title I was thinking why not just replace the furnace but saw it was a package unit. Makes sense now.
😮 what a job to replace those heat collectors and boy do you make that wiring look easy. 👍
Thanks so much for this. I was just entertaining the idea of possibly having to replace my old Ruud gas furnace that's 54 in tall with a 33 inch one that wouldn't line up for nothing. Now I just need to find a heat exchanger for this.
Thanku curtis for making these vidioes ur just like me honest and nice and respectful 😊😊 that's how I was raised in my family I'm not changing I'm always going to be good 😊😊
great video,Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Smooth install... They are never the same and often need exrea parts. Appreciate the transparency showing the suprise part needed. A solid video thanks for your time producing it.
That would be a warranty job ???
The price for what was done would rival the replacement!😃🤣🥃🍺
JS!
Stay safe!
Wow. Hell of a job. Keep up the great work
Heat exchangers always fun to do ! 👍👍👍
Did t wait till end...man nice and shiny....good for 10 more years...
Can't get enough of the videos. Keep up the great and honest work.
That heat exchanger was the 1st thing laid down when that unit was built. Football is upon us. War Eagle 🦅
Go Dawgs
That was a big job , i hope the customer is saving a lot by taking this route.
That's a big job, I enjoyed watching it.
Curtis I was just looking for a new foam pad to kneel down on. Saw you klein pad and decided that's the one I want
It’s nice and soft
Great job!!!
That job was very involved to say the least.
Keep up the good work.
interesting. i replaced a heat exchanger on an old gas-pack once when i was an HVAC installer/ helper. was very similar to this. you really have to break down the whole unit to get to the thing! one thing was different for me was i had to do it in place on the roof. thank god it was winter, would have been 10x worse in 110 degrees here in Tucson AZ :D loving your vids. thanks for posting
I know zip about hvac but I learned one thing for sure , company that made that unit cut a lot of corners on quality of materials and or design based on the corrosion you found , great job rebuilding that unit .
That was great I don’t see the package units up here in Wisconsin but I’ve changed them on roof top units.
I do home remodeling, I don't do HVAC at all so all this is new to me. I like learning new stuff though.
I love This channel
Nice job, can't wait for collage ball to start

Man you have to have a train load of tools with you on your semi-van to be ready for anything. Great job and great instructor. I am not in any business, just like to see what you have to put up with👍👍👍👍
Ive replaced a bunch of these Rheem gas pkg unit heat exchangers. I always quote a new collector box, radiation shield and if needed new burners, and the flue transition. Just ordered some of the bottom plates too. The part is called the burner floor. Seems like a sacrificial part like the radiation shield. Ive never taken the whole top off, but I just get the corner up to remove the heat exchanger. May try your method though. Thanks for the video.
I think I just changed my mind on wanting a package unit after seeing all that rust!
It was a nice thought though!🤔
Holy mmffr....the rusted exchanger bottom man n burner tube inlets...jesus.....is it worth fixing?.....man ur a saint...hope labor payed ur time...
I like the longer videos when it’s possible.
In retirement, I've built wiring harnesses which are designed to be compliant to MIL STD 2000, Category "C" (not an active standard, but often used to specify a desired level of quality and expected durability). Two years ago, a local religious charity, which builds homes, and does repairs for elderly and infirm, made the decision to design prefab 1,000 sq ft medical/dental/health maintenance clinics, which included Carrier, Trane, or TempStar gas packs to provide HVAC for these buildings. I bid-on, and won the contract to build the 18 AWG low voltage harnesses, which was connected to a security, HVAC, WiFi/hard-wired secure ethernet system. They built enclosures for the gas packs which had factory installed, bearing-assisted tracks which essentially made the installation a matter of slide-in, seal to the ductwork, connect 240VAC, connect the gas, and plug the Molex-terminated 24 VAC harness/data harness into the nicely designed interface. With just a little additional effort, package units would become very popular, and it wouldn't take much to make their design to be extremely service friendly.
Very good job enjoyed vidio
You could be any sooner, I have to go service one of these units in a week. The only thing that will kill me is the customer has a pvc fence right next to the blower side of the unit. Not even 4" away. I just hope they don't have the same issue with the hxr. Looking at this video gives me some insight of what I hope I don't have to do. But Curtis you got it out and back in great. Will you be going back to do a gas pressure, CO, and burner check later on? Very nice video and great insight of explaining whats going on. Thank you Curtis HVAC ON AMERICA!!!!
This clearly looks like a case of diminishing returns to me, but its fun watching you do your thing. This reminds me of many years ago when i took huge rooftop package units apart to seal the condensate pans with Gates UWM-28 liquid urethane rubber. Later on in life i learned that it only would have cost about 5% more for stainless steel pans. Low cost/first cost always rules with bean counters I guess. It is my opinion that the coupling of corporate bean counters with the production of Chinese parts with literally no quality control has destroyed our industries. Every damn one of them. Auto, HVAC, electronics, plumbing, electrical, you name it.
I watched the video at 2x speed, looks like you will be back one day to replace the rusty evaporator coil.
Looks like you may have forgot to hook up the inducing motor wires?! Love your vids very informative!!
Went back to do that
Great video! Could you have used bolt cutters if you didn't have the grinder on the sheet metal screws that you grinded off?
Gotta love our family
Was there anything you didn’t take apart? I got anxiety just thinking about putting all that back together. Should have time lapsed the whole thing.
Nice job
Patients Great video
I may have missed it, did you talk about having to adjust the burner ports? Or will you need to when heating season comes?
excellent job
Would you mind sharing what repairs and labor on a job like this runs?
Awesome video! Got one almost identical to this that needs a heat exchanger... seems like a pretty poor design. Where is your go to for Rheem parts like this? I am having a hard time finding one for mine.
Good job Curtis, that was a lot of work and time consuming, I hope you didn't under bid yourself, I hope it was worth the time.
all the parts wow
That was a lot of work.
Did that partly get bad because it's placed outside or is it just from the gas burning?
Was it an 042 or 024 and where did you find the heat exchanger? I need one for an 024.
what happen to heat shield below the heat exchanger nozzles?
In real time how long did this job take you to complete?
College Football is back! Go UGA Bulldawgs. Woof Woof Woof!
Would hosing down the pile of screws with penetrating oil make it easier to disassemble next time for the next guy, and also speed your ability to reassemble?
Can’t help but wonder if the vent motor should have been replaced
I like ur tool bag where can I get one like ur video s
What state are you in. None of our conditioned air is outside
Georgia
@@HVACGUY ok I'm up in MN the only thing outside is our condensers
@@Self.reliant this was a package unit meaning it’s all in one unit. What you have is a split unit with condensers outside and evaporators inside. Maybe this helps you
@@mwatkins2464 yes I was wondering why. No one in MN has this is this just used in warm weather areas
Awesome
You did a super job. What size m12 batteries are you using. Did you say you like the gen3 new dril?
I really use whatever of the small ones are charged. Yes, the Gen3 has enough power in 1 to allow me to use it, reducing my risk of stripping out screws.
@@HVACGUY Thanks
why did you swap from the gen 2 impact to the 3. Wasn't it fairly new?
Edit: kept watching and saw why lol
Curtis I'm just curious. Of course I don't have all the years and years of experience you have in you're Field, but what causes this particular problem to happen ? This is for somebody that's not in your trade! Lol
Those tubes are full of warm air in the summer. When the ac is on they sweat on the inside. They are slightly pitched forward, and the water rolls out the front.
How old was this unit and was this the original heat exchanger?
You install a Rheem thinking it will run like a dream...but to be fair it's more of a nightmare!
Curtis I appreciate your effort but a new unit is the to go
Yeah..sure! “Ok, these go to your flame sensor, this to the flame rollout, these gold and Latinum ones go to your dilithium recrystalization chambers, these black ones go to your Jeffries’ tubes, this one doubles back to transporter control…….”
You ever try those vampire pliers? They might get those screws out just a thought.
I’ve noticed that pretty much every Rheem/Ruud gas pack that I come across is rusted out at the front like that
That’s by design. Water condenses in the warm tubes in summer, and drains out the front
What are the part numbers?
I’ve never seen the entire unit outside. I guess they do things different in the south.
Bro. Not that I'm complaining or anything because I really don't mind watching ads but a suggestion might want to check your ad settings on your videos this one was unwatchable for me it was playing unskippable 2 minute ads every 3 minutes 54 minute video turned into almost 2 hours I don't know if it's TH-cam's ad sense or within your settings.
Sounds like a youtube adsense bug to me. I remember a few years ago they broke it and it did back to back unskippable 2+ minutes of ads every 5 minutes to every video i watched till i finally got pissed and installed an ad-block.
@@TheFallenAngel13524 Ye nah decided to just pay for TH-cam premium I watch a ton of videos on TH-cam so for me it's worth it. Those ad blockers can sometimes be detected by TH-cam and it messes with the creators monetization I ain't trying to do that.
Man I would be so confused putting all that back together
Easy peasy. 😎
Did you test run it to make sure it ran properly in heat mode?? I like these long videos 👍
I think i would have set that gasket in permatex ultra black.
And no parts leftover!!👍👍
Way to many screws, First I wished the engineers would have used stainless steel screws where needed and S type slide cleats to join the panels together making it easier to take apart
Yes like a blower motor you can slide into place and line up the burner tubes and screw holes. They need to realize we need to get a drill in there
GO GAMECOCKS!!!
I have a question what is the little square thing on the side were the gas exhaust comes from ?
@@michaelburton4025 That's where the exhaust gas exits.
Thought it would be harder to replace a heat exchanger
When you put the cover back on at the end you had not plugged in that motor you reinstalled.
Probably should have just replaced the whole unit. The coil looked in bad shape also.
R22 system. Should have just replaced the unit
What a nightmare. 😵
commenting for the algorithm.
that's why most companies sell a new package unit instead of repairing the broken dinosaurs. nobody want to spend the time or do the work.
