  • What does it take to produce a pair of jeans?
101 East travels to the Chinese city of Xintang, known as the jeans capital of the world, and exposes a dirty, dangerous industry.
We find workers risking their health while sandblasting jeans, a controversial process that makes denim look fashionably worn but which causes irreversible damage to workers' lungs.
We witness the devastating destruction the denim industry is wreaking on the environment.
Several big-name brands, including Levi Strauss, have pledged to end sandblasting, but this undercover investigation reveals that the harmful practice continues in China, putting workers' lives at risk.
So what is the real cost behind the making of a pair of jeans? And what is the role of the world's leading denim companies in producing this iconic wardrobe staple?

Awful!! All in the name of fashion. It's even worst that high-end brands buy cheap from the factory, turn blind-eye to the unhealthy practice, and sell it to their target market with high price!!

It's all in the wording for these companies. "We are no longer developing NEW denim styles with sandblasting." But the old ones are still in practice. "A&F does not support the practice of sandblasting..." They don't SUPPORT it, that doesn't mean they don't allow it.

Your exactly right! It's lawyer speak. A&F and American Eagle are so expensive too. It's beyond me why anyone would pay those prices for a pair of jeans. You can get perfectly good jeans for $20. Just because you can afford to pay A&F prices doesn't mean you should. Waste of money! Plus people are dying just to make them. Apple is another company that manufacturers in China. Apparently they had to put giant nets around their buildings cause the workers were committing suicide by jumping off the building. So their answer to suicidal employees (maybe slaves is a better term) is nets?!?

This is a stark measure of how complex the global supply chain is. The measure of progress is really about what we do with knowledge. As consumers we must respond to this by scrutinizing what we purchase and thinking beyond how things benefit us. Thank you for putting faces on the issue.

Overtime is common in China, it's great way to earn more. Despite labour laws, many workers insist on working overtime even if wages are good. It's part of the Chinese work ethic and they see nothing wrong with it. Conditions are often bad in all factories in Asia, go see India's clothing factories, they are at least as bad or worse than China's. Blame the labels that want higher profits for 'designer' clothes... This documentary is basically anti-Chinese.

This is such BS... You can't make an accurate documentary about something in China if you don't know how it works there. All these "heartless corporations" go to China and say "Our customers are upset with sandblasting, so use a factory that doesn't do it" - Then a CHINESE contractor with guangxi (connections) says "Okay sure!" and instead USES a factory that employs sandblasting and sells it so A&F as NON-sandblasted or non potassium or whatever. The jeans companies have very little control, because you *HAVE* to work with Chinese people to get stuff made in China. This WHOLE THING is the result of COMMUNISM. This is the fault of the Chinese Communist Party. Period.
