Another obvious one is to reduce alcohol and substance consumption. Nothing wrong with occasional indulgence but better to keep it minimal most of the time. And quit tobacco smoking if you haven't already.

I needed this video. I retired early at 56 and later on this year will get my first early social security check. Even though I’m almost 62, I still care about how I look and feel, as well as what I wear. This advice was really great and spot on, although I would take exception to the hair color advice. There’s something about gray hair that just makes me feel old and worn out. I’ve found I prefer the look, it makes me feel better about myself, and most people don’t know, at least not right away. I’m just saying that advice isn’t for everybody. At some point I’ll blend into gray but not yet.
By the way, my hair stylist a 20 something woman had some gray hair color that was just gorgeous. It’s still color but an attractive shade of gray I could live with.

I am a 62 year old English man. Since my early teens I followed the fashion and images of David Bowie who, in my opinion grew into each decade of his life up until his death in 2016. I have started to notice the signs of age creeping in. I refuse to settle for slippers and a pipe but equally don't want to appear as mutton dressed as lamb. These videos really help me to draw a good balance, thank you. If you TH-cam Petes Pop Band Young Americans you will see how I looked 20 odd years ago....

Sleep helps and calorie deprivation also. It worked for me. Give it a try. Don't do stress as much as possible but some people(lots) are hooked on it and it becomes a way of life for you which is really bad for your skin and wrinkling and posture.

    PLAY MUSIC!
Just turned 60! Lifelong musician currently playing in a cover band-- guitar, keyboards and lead vocals. Mostly wineries, festivals, etc. NO BARs! Been there ... not worth getting home at 2 a.m.
Musically... we challenge ourselves each year by raising the bar. This year for example we added 'Free Bird' and 'Stairway' to our set list. Really! It started as a joke because at most gigs there's always that guy that sez ''Play Free Bird'! Well ... now we do!
BONUS ... my son is the drummer in our band. Time spent together making music ... priceless!
Btw ... if you don't play an instrument it is never too late. Truly. I used to teach guitar and had students from age 5 to 90! Truth. Go for it!

Most men don't but you definitely should keep your skin moisturized. I moisturize my face and arms daily (feet and legs...2 or 3 times a week)! I will be 48 and most people think I look at least 10 years younger than my age! Yes, tailored clothing makes you look younger as well! Definitely groom yourself (ears, nose, eyebrows, beard, head, etc). I have been doing a lot of what you have suggested in this video John but the 8 hours of sleep...usually get about 5 hours😔 Thanks for the great video!

Great video. I wanted to dye my hair once too because I thought the gray was too age revealing, but my stylist wouldn't do it. She told me to embrace my gray, and when I really thought about it, I had to agree with her. Also, another tip to looking younger is "OLIVE OIL". Good for so many things including keeping your skin in good shape!

Hi John. When I wash my face I use one of those battery operated facial scrubbers with my regular face wash and exfoliant. It works really well and mine has a brush and a sponge attachment. I also totally agree on getting a massage. I get one on a monthly basis and IMO its the best gift you can give yourself or give a gift card for one to a friend. Peace. :)

I've always been an anxious guy, adhd, which is not a diagnosed thing, but it's very obvious. I have always eaten candy almost everyday, used to drink 1L. Dr. Peppers everyday before High school, and just in my late 20's realized I needed to make changes....but I didn't do it. I'm now 30 and just today a lady thought my wife and I were both teens before finding out our real age. I know genetics play the biggest part of it all, but now I am eating really clean, for the most part. I'm working out at least just 10-20 minutes a day and I feel like it's making a change gradually. I actually started using Tiege Hanley 2 wks ago. I am hoping to get rid of these fine lines around my eyes, which as I mentioned surprisingly still doesn't make me look my age for the most part. I am not a fan of being called Sir, so it's always a breath of fresh air to have days like this where people think you are waaaaay younger. My mom's 65, but doesn't look a day over 55.

Thanks John. At 64 I have a full head of grey hair. I have tried coloring in the past. Settled on the grey and love it. I know you touched on 'grooming' but what are your thoughts on facial hair? Yours looks awesome, yet in my opinion most men do look younger clean shaven. Thoughts?

One of the best things my wife and I do to feel younger is to go out. We do something every weekend. It could be as simple as dinner. Sometimes it’s dinner and music, sometimes it’s dancing, sometimes it’s bowling or even axe throwing. We are always amongst the oldest folks out and it makes me wonder what my peers are doing on a Friday or Saturday night?

I've had some friends and their wives say I should shave my grey beard. I'm 48 and don't feel the need to "look younger". The weird thing is that the younger people seem to like my grey beard better than people my age.

@@40OverFashion Actually that's a great point that Colin made about beards.
I've just turned 60 and have had a short beard for quite a while, but every time I shave it off - thinking it might help me look younger - I see the wrinkles under my chin, which makes me (I think) look older. So, I'm keeping it - short and trimmed.
Just saying. (Thanks for another great video John!)

  • @gsjackson34

I'm 70, and usually taken for 45-50. All I do for my face is run a wet wash rag over it in the shower. I'll put something natural on it like olive oil occasionally, but nothing made in a chemistry lab. Washing your face with your own sweat is best.
Getting plenty of sun has always been a big part of my health regimen. Wouldn't even think of putting carcinogenic sun block on. No skin damage from the sun, and the only lines on my face are expression lines on the forehead. Prioritize health and you'll continue to look good and age slowly.

    • @davetherave4599
      @davetherave4599 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Ditto here. Exactly my regimen. I'm 65, look 45. I work out intensively and take numerous supps as well. No chemicals on my skin. No creams. No cologne. No soap or shampoo. And also massage my skin with olive oil/coconut oil daily. And never use sun screen. I tell people it's poison and that the sun is the best thing for you, and they look at me as if I've lost it. Never mind. I never used the stuff, and I don't has a wrinkle on me. Natural is the way to go!

Good call on the hair dying thing - I don't get why guys are hung up about going Grey. Women really dig it (my girlfriend certainly does).
I've also experienced the ageism thing in the last few years - there seems to be the mentality with employers that as soon as you're past the big 5-0, you're scrapheap material.
As always, lots of sound advice in your videos John. 🙂

I started going grey in my late 20's (I am 57 now) and never considered dying my hair. I went with the whole "salt and pepper" look before it became a thing to do. I agree with you, men who dye there hair just generally look worse than simply going with the flow. Great channel, keep the videos coming.

Staying young is simple and hard at the same time. The simple part: maintain, maintain, maintain. The hard part: putting in the work to maintain, maintain, maintain. I'm 51 and I have the same exact dimensions that I had when I was 20 (I've been a vegetarian and gym goer for over 30 years). And no wrinkles; just a little bit of grey on the sides (which I keep shaved down). Multiple strangers who don't know me have told me I look between 32 and 35 and an older cashier at Trader Joe's said to me "take care, young man" a few weeks ago. LOL. My advice: Sunscreen (lots of it). Wash your face twice a day and have a skincare regimen (particularly around the eyes). No sweets or things with added sugar. Low sodium. No meat. Lots of soy (controversial, I know). Lots of fruit. Lift as heavy as you can (without injuring yourself). Walk/bike/hike everywhere. Don't skip leg day. Always be curious. Be consistent with all of the above.

About the grey hair... my dad passed away at 75; he had a white full beard but his head was completely dark brown. Everyone used to hassle him about if he was coloring his hair but he said he didn’t. I spent his last six weeks with him, bedridden in a hospital so I am certain that he didn’t dye his hair. His two brothers came to visit him, exactly the same, full dark hair. And I turn 50 this year and have grey spots in my beard but full dark head hair. Genetics are a weird thing, so not every older guy with dark hair is coloring his hair.

Vegetable smoothies might not be the best thing for older people. Protein (NOT plant based protein) is much more essential, along with healthy saturated fats. This DOES NOT include seed oils.
Muscle is the strength of longevity, and will keep you out of the rocking chair, so use it, or get use to sitting a lot.

Darn those nose hairs! So rude! lol Can't overestimate the value of good, basic skincare. I LOVE Clinique & Trader Joe's affordable skincare line. Great informative video! :)

I've been using a touch of liquid foundation since 2015. It takes five years off and contains SPF and moisturisers. Win Win.

I'm 54 and people tell me I look I'm 25. My secret? I only eat eggs that have been laid by chickens that have been fucked by roosters all night....now you know.😁😉👍
Ok. I actually look like I'm in my mid to late 40's. Most of your advice is spot on. I would also say to eat better, drink less and be a kid now and then. I still play basketball. I surf and paddle board. I'll do things that are active and fun. And I always try to remember my dad's advice: You're going to get old, just don't help it along.

Life expectancy in America has actually decreased In the past handful of years. Covid, suicide, drug overdoses, gun violence, and a lack of access to healthcare are some of contributing factors.

I'm apparently living my best life. When people find out I'm 44, they're shocked because I don't look it. They think I look 20 something. I kinda clap back with the acronym: "BDC"😏😏

Why is it so difficult for most (all?) Americans to pronounce the word 'mirror'? This is a disyllabic (i.e. two syllable) word and should not be pronounced 'meer' (which is what I'm afraid to say I keep hearing).

I should’ve figured this was a sponsored video. Tiege Hanley puts too much fragrance in their products especially their sunscreen. Adding an irritating ingredient (like fragrance) and go out in the sun which is also irritating is a recipe for disaster 👎🏻👎🏻

    • @40OverFashion
      @40OverFashion  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hmm... There’s virtually no fragrance at all. Thanks for commenting though.

You are a Salesman. Every opportunity you are advertising some product. I guess that’s how you make a living, Companies pay you to promote their products. Be genuine!

Peter, this video is over 10 minutes long. You can choose to only focus on the 90 seconds or so of promotion, or you can focus on the other 8 minutes of value that I work hard to create. The 90 seconds allows me to make the other 8 minutes.
