- 9-Ball - A classic if there ever was one. Way back in 1992 at the Bicycle Club Casino in Bell Gardens, California, CJ Wiley and “Captain Hook” Mike Sigel were battling it out in the Semi-Finals of BC Invitational. Sigel, 38, had already established himself as one of the greatest players of all time and in 1989 was inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame. Wiley made a name for himself hustling around the country and now was making a bigger name for himself on the pro circuit.
Bill Incardona and Buddy Hall shared their views.

These guys would of been my choice for Mosconi cup when it started. Buddy, Mike, CJ, Johnny etc.
Those kid disrespect Sigel cause they never saw him play in his prime.Dude was a monster back in the day.
Both players in this match seem "accelerated". They probably weren't sleeping or eating that much either 🤣.

I used to work for CJ at his north Dallas night club, Carson’s. He whipped everyone’s butt I’ve seen him play. Talented indeed.

So interesting at that time Parica has prominence in Billy's pov next to Mike. Almost like Efren hasn't crossed the horizon. But it won't be long before he does. Big time. Really interesting how Billy's commentary has been so consistently the same over the years. Buddy's too. Listening to them today vs back then, they sound the exact same. Voices don't age! This is great stuff!
Efren had already been competing in the U.S. for seven years by this time. Believe me, he was already near the top of everyone's list of great players, but he was not quite as successful in pro tournaments as guys like Sigel, Strickand, Varner, and Hall.

We started late in the 80's. We have some in '89 that will be posted.
I was there, never missed a day! The Bike, Commerce, Crystal Park we had some good pool for a while.
This match is the best example why rack your own is so much better.
Parica was the reason they had rack your own. He used to Mud Rack his opponents all the time.
Not sure what the rules were in this tournament, but at 25:25, Sigel moved the 8 ball with his cue while pocketing the 5 ball.

I haven’t watched many of these matches but Siegel is the only player I’ve seen smile.i understand that it’s a serious thing but it’s good to watch someone decently laid back and enjoying the play.

Buddy said CJ was unhappy about the 2 ball shot, CJ was pissed about Sigel moving the 8 out of the corner pocket line incase he had to bank the the five back to him in corner. And sigel knew it was seen that's why he didn't bank the following 5 ball ! If he'd of banked the 5 it would of been undoubtedly done on purpose an he knew it.

Fun to watch! This was after Mike had lost a step or just lost his love for the game.. Not sure? I've heard almost every top player of the time when asked who was their toughest opponent? Mike Sigel's was the answer... Including Efren Reyes who admitted that Sigel was the only guy he never once beat for money.
I didn't like Sigel's choice on that shot at 1:52:00, but I saw that 9 ball shot as clear as day. Beautiful win.

Me too! At the International, a ref racks with a template. The players cannot inspect the rack. They must just break the balls. MUCH BETTER!

Pat, if you don't mind answering, when do you think Mike's game started to fall off? He looks pretty good in this video (I haven't finished it yet), and he looked fantastic in the 150 and out video you uploaded, but in a lot of the later videos he just doesn't look comfortable at the table. He doesn't even look comfortable in his stance. He's won so many tournaments and so many pros respect him that I know he must have been a beast. I just wonder if he never fully recovered from his time away from the game. Curious to hear your insights on this.

Anyone one what kind of cues and shafts they used backnin these days? Standard maple? Whats the taper?
Everyone was using either Meucci, Joss or Schon cues with Birdseye Maple shafts turned down to 12.5 mm pro taper.
Pat, when did Buddy start to slide? I saw him breeze through the U. S. Open in 1998, but after that I don't remember seeing that much of him. Was it health related issues or just a matter of advancing years, or a combination of the two? And when did he last seriously compete?
I'd love to see more of his matches, as IMO in his prime he was the best nine ball player I've ever seen, bar none.
He slowed down quite a bit in the early 2000's. Not sure why.

2 way carom on the 9. with a built in safety 6 behind the 8 ball. due to the fact that the 8 became a big ball because of the 8 ball position. cueball touches the nine it slows the roll of the cueball.
Sigel really silenced Billy and Buddy with his final shot!
Is Billy watching the same match I am, he said CJ did not do anything wrong in those games 4, 5, and 6. Are you kidding me, after he went up 3-0 he missed 2 or 3 easy shots, and hooked himself a couple times, while also playing a couple bad safeties, so CJ did a lot wrong in games 4, 5, and 6.
Mike acts like he's hooked almost every shot, when it's got plenty of room...

At 25 :25 he shot the 5 an his cue rolled the 8, I've shot pool 35yrs there's no way in hell he didn't feel that 8 through his stick !!
Absolutely, looking for this comment. They may have been playing the 45 degree rule like they do at the Derby City. Double hits don't count when jacked up.
Sigel acts like every shot is hard or won't go..when there straight in..

sIGEL WAS KNOWN FOR THIS. PROBABLT DOING IT MORE SO TO GET ON THE NERVES OF OTHER PLAYER. ALSO IF OTHER PLAYER WAS HOT AND IN STROKE, THE DELAY GETS HIM TO "COOL DOWN" REALLY BAD SPORTSMANSHIP BY SEGAL AND ALLL THE TALKING AND DELAYS TO DISTRACT MENTALLY.
Billy whined so much when Mike hooked himself in the last rack, I'm sure he must have had a sizable wager on the outcome. "I'll never understand why he shot it that way" Buddy was laughing at him..

Might have been frozen so it would be legal. McGiver didn't look at it and Mike didn't seem to call it frozen. I think it was a foul.

The rules in 1992 allowed a "jacked up stroke" even when there was a slight space between the cb and ob. The cue ball had to slow down for a legal stroke. That type of stroke today is a foul, but not in 1992.
