My response to the haters of Sgt Pepper’s: Ok, you try creating an album of that much depth and soundscape. Oh, oh, oh, wait… and do it on a four track.
That’s what blows my mind about that record.
    Great video Glen!

I agree, BigSky...Odyssey and Oracle is an exquisite listen. A Rock fan may not like it, but they have to respect it. Underrated, if anything...it doesn't need 'hits.' It's a lovely concept album.I wouldn't say ANY Doors record is overrated, save SOFT PARADE...I prefer LOVE'S 'De Capo' to 'Forever Changes' (which I also dig).
The only time I got testy was when Glen said "there are only three good songs" on GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD. C'mon, man! I first heard the album when it was released. I was ten, and loved nearly every song then. Still do now. To each their own...

I’m with you on The Wall. I really respect it but I don’t go back to the whole thing. Just select songs like you were saying. I really like Forever Changes & Odessey + Oracle but also not enough to fight someone over them haha.

Always a hot topic! the underrated/overrated conversations are always.. complex. You can love an album to death, and admit that it's still overrated. You can hate an album but also objectively admit that it might be underrated. I try to stay objective and not make a ton of judgments on records/genres/artists that I'm not as keen or familiar with. If I hate Jazz, I'm probably not in a place to say that Kind of Blue is overrated OR underrated. If I find most double albums to be difficult to listen all the way through to, then I'm not sure I'm the best person to make a comment on whether a double album is underrated or overrated. Sgt Pepper can be the greatest album ever made... and still be overrated... and underrated! Anyway, hope this video blows up for you Glen like the previous one did... see you in a few hours!

If albums have too many weak tracks I extract the good ones and burn them to a cd-r and now I have a really strong compilation. Sgt. Pepper is a great landmark album and Brothers in Arms is just a great album from beginning to end.

    Great video @GlenKellawayFromTheBasement
I feel what is overrated is tough to determine when music is so subjective.
In regards to Sgt. Pepper's I feel those who wave the flag that it is the greatest album of all time is where it gets the overrated label. As a younger person, who could never imagine dropping the needle when Sgt. Pepper's first was released, I think that is why younger people like myself aren't enamored with this album. I feel when Rolling Stone magazine dropped Sgt. Pepper's to I think No. 28 when it was I believe chosen the greatest album, right or wrong on how you feel about Rolling Stone, shows how those tones are toward it.
Personally I don't even have Sgt. Pepper's in the top half of The Beatles catalog.
An album I find extremely overrated is Sex Pistols Never Mind The Bullocks album, it is in a similar vein as Sgt. Peppers because it was so vastly different and some say "created a scene." I always felt the scene was there and the Pistols were just fashion models in fetish wear for Malcolm McLaren to get off on. When you talk punk scene, I am not putting that album up there with the MC5, Velvet Underground, The Stooges, The Clash, Ramones, X, early Elvis Costello, Talking Heads etc.
I love Miles Davis, I own almost his entire catalog, but I feel a lot of newbies place, and I love this album, Bitches Brew way too high. Even amongst Miles' Electric period, I feel it is the worst album of the period. I get it is a five-star record, but I feel albums like In A Silent Way, Jack Johnson, On The Corner were stronger albums.
Radiohead OK Computer is up there for me as overrated, much like I said about Bitches Brew, OK Computer is a five-star opus but I feel The Bends and Kid A are five-star opuses as well.
Lastly I agree Pink Floyd The Wall is overrated, I think for me the mythology as a kid and a in my formative years of The Wall made it mythical, as I got into my 30's and my musical pallet is more refined, I find Animals, Wish You Were Here better Floyd albums. I also feel the journey of Tommy and Quadrophenia are way better operas than The Wall.

The Wall is an absolute masterpiece. It is a pure sonic odyssey from start to finish. It contains musical innovation, experimentation, and theatrical folie in a purely British way that, no surprises, a lot of people, especially Americans, just don’t understand. The Wall is one of the greatest albums of all time.

Just played Brothers in Arms yesterday. The drumbeat in Money For Nothing is annoying as heck in that monotonous 80s kind of way. But Knopfler's guitar playing is always great.
The Wall is good but definitely over-rated, i.m.o.
What's Going On is NOT over-rated. No way, no how. The album flows from start to finish and there's no filler to be found. Check out the Dirty Dozen Brass Band's cover of the album. It's also great.
Lamb Lies Down is great, but possibly over-rated.
    My picks for most over-rated:
    Aja
    Zeppelin 4
    Exile On Main Street
    Thriller
    Boston
    Nevermind
    Purple Rain
    Appetite For Destruction
Supernatural (sorry Carlos, you're one of my favorites but that album blows, with the exception of a few songs)
Aja (it's so over-rated that I had to list it twice 😂)

I was a little kid in the 60s and I literally had to keep it to myself that I did not like Sergeant Pepper. I thought it was overrated and all it was was a collection of songs. There is no theme. There is no big idea. Imagine my surprise when recently Keith Richards came out and said the same thing. Then I read or heard John Lennon saying the same exact thing. Finally there is a record review written by Ray Davies when it came out and he says the same thing. It's over produced and over ornate and tedious. I like the title song and the reprise. And getting better and good morning.

  • @timhewtson6212
    @timhewtson6212 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

It sounds like 'Funeral for a friend' will be an F. Well, obviously it will be.
Yep, 'Benny and the Jets' is annoying, but there are at least two other great songs on 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road': 'All the Young Girls Love Alice' and 'Danny Bailey.'
From what I've heard, all true Doors fans consider their first album to be the best.
I'd agree with you on 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway,' and I'd throw in Tull's 'A Passion Play.'
'Another Brick in the Wall' has a magnificent grandiosity of vision and several really good songs. Has anyone ever watched an opera? Typically one headliner song, two hours of other music, and a silly storyline. By that benchmark, this opera is pretty damned good. 'Tommy' and 'Quadraphenia' likewise. I lost The Kinks on their 'Soap Opera,' and I don't know how I got past 'Percy.' My age at the time, I suppose. Willies were funny.
My nominations for most overrated would be 'Led Zep I and II.' 'Led Zep IV' and 'Physical Graffiti' - spectacular albums. But those first two ...? Was every male except me psychic?

"Brothers In Arms" is very good, but I like their debut and "Making Movies" a lot more. "Sgt. Pepper" will also always be my favorite album of all time. I find CD 1 of "The Wall" great, but CD 2 has a lot of filler to me. "Odessey And Oracle" is great. I think it's a masterpiece. I discovered it very late. "What's Going On" is better than you think. "Flying High In The Friendly Sky" has an amazing bass line. "Inner City Blues" is also great. "The Doors" debut is a masterpiece for me, their best album! I like CD 1 of "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" is great, CD 2, not so much. Similar to "The Wall". "Forever Changes" is very good, but I think their "Da Capo" album has their best album side, Side One. "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is and always will be my favorite Elton John album. There's a little bit of filler, but it's very good overall to me.

I don't think the albums you mentioned are overrated. An album I think is overrated is Frank Zappa's Joe's Garage. All three parts. I don't think it's bad, but I don't think it's as good as a lot of people make it out to be. One thing that I can't stand about the album is that it has way too many sexual jokes in it. Frank Zappa was always wacky, but I think he took it little too far this time.

I suppose great albums are prone to be tagged overrated. Brothers in Arms is good but overrated, especially when it came out. I like Sgt Pepper but not as much as most. I can’t get into The Wall. Odessey and Oracle is great. For me Time of the Season is my least favourite.I have noticed that Odessey and Oracle does sound very different depending on which version you have - the song This Will Be Our Year has a version with horns, which many like, but I prefer it with just the vocals and piano, not the best piano playing but it’s heartfelt- to my ears anyway. The Doors debut is great but not my favorite of theirs. What’s Going On - NO filler - perfect album. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - I agree. Starts off well. I love Grey Seal, classic Elton John sound. Benny and the Jets and Candle in the Wind I can do without.
    Overrated for me are:
    Who’s Next - don’t like it
Destroyer- Kiss. I love Kiss but the great songs of this album are pulled down by the bad ones.
Sabotage Black Sabbath - I do love this album but all their prior albums are much better. I have noticed putting this as their favourite.
Are You Experienced- ok, it’s not overrated but I get annoyed when people rate this as their best and dismiss or don’t mention Axis and even Electric Ladyland. Axis: Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland 10/10, Are You Experienced 9.5/10 😊👍🏽 Btw, Pets Sounds is the masterpiece of masterpieces…but I understand those who don’t like it. I didn’t when I first heard it, or should I say I didn’t get the hype but I do now. ✌️

I think the earlier Dire Straits albums are better than Brothers In Arms, so I would label it overrated. I think it became a big hit because of the videos more than the music.
Sgt. Pepper is hard to talk about. It's so well known that it could be the best album ever and still be overrated. I stopped listening to it for years, but then I found an early UK mono pressing and that was a whole other world compared to how I heard it before.
I find The Wall really boring, with a few great moments. The concept was ambitious but the songs mostly don't live up to it.
The Doors debut is flawless. It might not be their best album, but it's held up to decades of listening for me.
I like Odessey & Oracle, but I'm not onboard with the "masterpiece" label. Not yet anyway - I haven't listened to that one enough.
I am a huge fan of Forever Changes. It sounded very unusual to me the first few times I heard it, but it really grew on me. Now it's one of my favourite albums, and if I could only listen to 10 albums from the 60s it would have to be on the list.
Great video, and I'm sure there will be lively debate in the comments!

I’ve never listened to a Dire Straits album. Sgt Pepper is great. I’ve never listened to the Wall all the way through. It is okay. Odyssey and Oracle is over rated. Two great songs does not make a great album. I haven’t listened to a Bruce Springsteen album since Born In The USA. Whats Going On has 4 great songs. The rest not that great. Side one of the Doors debut is perfect. I’m not a fan of Genesis. I’ve had several of their albums but purged them all. However I saw Genesis live and they were great. Forever Changes is a very good album but not on par with the Beatles or Stones from the same time period. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is too long but I love Bennie and the Jets. The three albums after Goodbye Yellow Brick are very good. In fact West Of The Rockies is my favorite. I would add Pet Sounds. It ain’t no Sgt Pepper.
