As someone who lost memory and had a life reset myself, finishing JoJolion was a very meaningful experience for me. watching Josuke's development go from being obsessed in finding out about his past to accepting that his past is literally dead and that he is a new person made me go "YO THAT'S LITERALLY ME" but reading the story from this point of view made me realize a lot of stuff (surprisingly) about Tooru that I don't think I've seen anyone talking about yet
@@Nothisndhdudjdjdj it is a lot of text, but ok hear me out, we have to look at Tooru from two different points of view, Josuke's point of view and the reader's point of view. From Josuke's point of view we need to know that the connection with the first person you properly meet after memory loss is indeed a real thing, but from the perspective of someone with no past, he goes through the whole part without considering that Yasuho has already had a life and a past with other people before him, and Tooru represents the discomfort of the realization that his life will never truly be complete, and that just learning about his past won't bring back the experiences, it's an emotional insecurity that makes you believe that you can't compete with someone who had a lifetime to meet your special person. Now the reader's point of view is where things start to get interesting, because JoJolion as a whole represents the post-memory loss stages from Josuke's perspective, but Tooru as a whole represents the exact same thing from the reader's perspective. Wonder of U/the Head Doctor represents the phase of obsession with answers, where the impossible pursuit with dangerous consequences that we see mirrors exactly Josuke's behavior at the beginning of the story. chasing an unreachable silhouette for so long has exactly the same feeling as trying to force yourself to remember something, giving readers the same feeling that Josuke had in the beginning. Tooru as a person represents the uncanny phase, it's the introduction of a character who, in theory, should have been there from the start. He seems important, has a crucial role in the plot and should have been a recurring character from the beginning, but you don't remember him and it makes you frustrated and uncomfortable, just like Josuke every time he meets someone from his past that he should know but didn't remember, like Karera for example. The acceptance phase is represented by the defeat of the villain and mirrors the ending where Josuke finally accepts leaving the past behind and moving on. Josuke only realizes that he doesn't depend on past experiences to be accepted and complete when he sees his friends sacrifice themselves to help him at the hospital. acceptance is the highest point of post-memory loss development, and as psychological growth can affect stands, he can now metaphorically and literally "Go Beyond".
tooru feels like a horror movie monster to me, sinister in the sense that he’s a confusing entity that “comes out of nowhere” but has actually been present the whole time. that sort of trope is seen a lot in horror, i only bring that up because araki has mentioned horror movies being a source of inspiration. i also feel like he’s not the strongest villain but what’s successful to me is the sense of discomfort he brings. the juxtaposition of tooru singing and dancing while yasuho is nearly dying next to him gives me strong horror villain vibes. he’s having a little bit of fun causing all this mayhem. also the fact that’s he’s technically not human, like most horror movie antagonists.
This is honestly probably the best take I've ever seen on Tooru. I get what you're saying about the "comes out of nowhere" thing, but I think if he actually was introduced in an earlier part of the story and not just in some retrospection or flashbacks, it would've felt even crazier.
I definitely definitely want Yasuho's story to be continued in Part 9. She helped Josuke find his place, but I feel like she really hasn't found her own yet. When she left the café in the last chapter it felt a bit melancholic to me, like she still feels as though she doesn't fit in (with the Higashikata family in this case). I think her character still has a lot of potential to grow.
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. You really hit the nail on the head with the melancholic note of her leaving the story at the end and I definitely should've brought that up. If there's any inkling on her being in JOJOLands, I'll definitely make sure to shout this out. Also Naoto is goated.
Yeah other than unresolved plot points and the ending idk why people dislike Jojolion it’s like part 4 but with a much better mystery. The biggest complaint I hear is that the second half is weird but I find it perfect cus he found his identiy and he wants to fit into his old identity by helping holly but by the end he learns to accept he is not Kira nor josefumi but josuke higashikta
Oh and a little addon I find tooru very interesting and a good villian (he would be my 5 or 4th favorite villian) wonder of u is like a yin and Yang battle. Torru fighting so he can keep his memories and keep living as the head doctor and josuke is fighting to save holly and get some memories back. And when he can’t save holly it’s the last straw that tells him to leave it all behind and embrace his new life
@@rufusg.6999 I personally am on the side of the first half of JoJolion being better. While I like the ending realization Josuke has a lot, I think that a lot of the fights in that latter half really made the part drag a bit.
I think that jojolion is truly the first part that's about Friends and Family which is what jojo is all about. It encompasses 2 themes which are self identity and inner peace. I think it was executed (with the exception of the dropped plot points) as it was meant to. Everything was truly deliberate. I love Jojolion which is why it's my 3rd favorite part
I absolutely agree with this. Josuke discovering people that truly care about him even though he has no blood connection to them was really powerful. Although there are definitely things I'm not a fan of, the story was still an enjoyable ride for the most part. I'm glad you like it so much!
I actually added a section talking about that during the editing process. The coincidence is too funny. Excited to give the second part a watch when it drops.
I personally have a lot of gripes with part 8 but one specific aspect of Arakis storytelling is really weak in this part. Araki builds up many interesting mysteries throughout the part that keeps you hooked but I feel like almost none of the mystery really paid off. To me when writing a mystery if the answers aren't as satisfying and epic as the mystery the story tends to fall flat. I also think Araki focused on alot of the wrong things and could've improved the part massively if Tooru had been introduced earlier. I also think Jobin didn't get the appropriate character conclusion and his death was premature. We also never got to take a look into Kiras darker side which was alluded to early in the series. Despite all the flaws tho, part 8 was still a really fun and different experience for me.
You are absolutely spitting. A Gatling gun of facts that I absolutely agree with. And while it was a fun time for sure, there are definitely things I would change.
Jojolion just feels special to me, its the anti-shonen in my opinion The mc doesnt start with a noble Goal Like saving the world, but he rather wants to endanger his Friends and adoptive Family to learn who he once was. After finding out there was nothing that He can remember he sets out to form meaningful relationships and to save the mother of one of his halves, very good character growth. The Side-Characters (Not the jobros) all set out to fulfill their own Goals instead of the Main Goal of Gappy, If they wouldnt live under the same roof, they wouldnt give two f*cks about some Boy with Amnesia. Its also nice that they cant be catagorized as "the fanservice" or "the pervert" (even Joshu gets a little bit of character growth in the last Pages of 108) The best Part about jojolion has to be the villains, the fact that almost anyone of them could've replaced tooru and serve as the last one Standing is amazing. There is no "Big Bad" Mafia Boss that gets set up from the beginning, the entire Organization is the Main villain, tooru just happens to be the last one Standing TL;Dr: jojolion very good 👍 favourite Jojo Part
While I do agree with a lot of your points, especially with the side characters, I can't agree with the villains opinion. I feel as though a villain like Damo with more ties to Josuke's past would've served as a more important endgame threat because of his ties to our main character. Tooru feels too out of the blue for me to view him as a solid main villain, which is the reason many people choose to not see him that way. It's definitely an enjoyable part, but there are just some things I'm not behind.
