How to BALANCE the DJI RONIN SC with the phone mount. (why is it so hard?)

  • If you own the DJI Ronin SC you will know it is a great little gimbal for you mirrorless camera. I have own the Ronin SC for a few months and I love it. I use it all the time and it is small, light weight and easy to travel with. BUT the one thing that has always been frustrating is how hard it is to balance with the phone mounted on top of the camera. Balancing the camera by itself isn't that difficult, it just takes some practice. Balancing them with the phone mount is very tricky. It really shouldn't be that tricky but it is. I spend a few hours trying to figure it out...and I finally did!

    So who has been frustrated by trying to balance the DJI Ronin SC with the phone attachment? It took me a while to get used to it but now I can balance it without any issues, but it took me some time to figure it out. What about you? Did the phone attachment give you problems in balancing the Ronin SC?

      Thanks for being honest with that. I’ve let the thing sit for over a year thinking there was a problem with it (or me) And that is just with the camera! I almost sold the damn thing haha. Your video had me give it another go after trying 4 previous times. I’ve watched countless videos and havnt heard anyone mention the frustration. Finally got excellents across the board without worrying my 3000 dollars being sent into a death spiral on the gimbal, which terrified me the first time I tried.

    Hi Dave- I picked up the Dji Ronin SC on a good open box for a nice price today. Your video was a life-saver for balancing with the phone case. I followed what you said and it worked like a charm. Thanks for posting. Nicely shot piece, great light, great sound. A+

      Thanks Charles, and congratulations on the Ronin SC. I put this video together at the last minute because I was pissed off that there was not enough videos on how to balance the ronin sc with the phone attached 😀 It can still be a pain to balance with the phone attached but if you are patient it will work. Good luck and enjoy that nice buttery footage. What camera are you putting on it?

      Thanks Colin, ya balancing with the phone mount was so frustrating. I gave up on it then I decided I needed to figure it out. It's actually easy now but there was a lot of cursing along the way 😀 good luck.

      Ha, thanks. I did watch those videos as well and I liked them but they didn't really answer my questions. It was quite frustrating. I am the type of person that really had to work on a specific technique several times until I get it, I am a bit slow! Glad you liked the video.

    Hi, thanks for the detailed explanation, 9:28 where you mentioned, it will hit the back, that’s where I am stuck, if I lift the axis up, it no more balances, if I lower the arm down, it will hit the back and I get the message “Tilt axis re balancing required”.

    • @rudyisgold
      @rudyisgold 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You ever figure it out? This is where i am stuck too. Every time i try to rebalance it, it always leans backwards. No matter what else i adjust

    • @photo_magicshots
      @photo_magicshots 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rudyisgold It will be like that only and won’t clear the balance test but you can use it that way, works just fine

    You just filled me with hope ;) But I think it will be still some hard work to do. I don´t need the phone very often on top of the cam, but unfortunately very often my external mic. And that is centered on the cold shoe, so the little trick with putting the thing to the left is not possible. But I will try!

    Have you had any success in balancing the ronin sc, a6400, sigma 16mm, and a deity/rode mic? I’ve tried for 3 hours and the lense and everything is too heavy. On the tilt, it is almost entirely to the front way past Zero. I can do it great without any attachments in the camera, but out anything on the camera and I can not balance the gimbal after

    • @DavidDavies

      Hi Ben, I have tried it with the a6400, sigma 16mm and the rode video micro. I attach the mic to the side of the gimbal on one of the cold shoes. I use a longer cable to connect it to the camera so it doesn't impact the function of the gimbal. But you are right it can be frustrating to add accessories and keep the gimal balanced.

    Great video... I'm thinking to buy it but I have a few doubts. Does the Force Mobile and Active Tracking only work with the listed phones on the compatibility list? It's so outdated that I'm wondering if would it work with newer phones. What phone are you using on the video? I have a Nokia 7.2 and like to be able to use it with these two features. Greetings from a venezuelan in Chile that is starting a TH-cam channel!

    • @DavidDavies
      @DavidDavies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the nice comment. You are right about the compatibility list being out of date, it's quite frustrating. Much like the app, the other features on the gimbal will only work with a compatible phone. I think I was using the Pixel 4 for this video? Good luck with your TH-cam channel, let me know what it's called?

    Thank you for your tutorial! I bought this gimbal recently in order to upgrade my shaky vids, but so far I haven't used it properly. I think the quick release plate will be quite convenient for me, do you have a link for that? Thank you in advance!

    • @DavidDavies
      @DavidDavies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes the quick release really does help. I don't have a link, but if you search arca swiss plate you should find a bunce. Neewer actually makes a decent plate that isn't too expensive. The biggest thing that helped me was to practice balancing the gimbal, it takes a lot of practice but once you get it, it is so simple and the gimbal works great. Good luck
