    Oh, hell yes. I recently purchased a Ronin SC and wondered if it was possible to Active Track myself with the gimbal mounted on a tripod. Using the trigger to lock on/off is so convenient and easy! In vlogging mode it basically works like an oversized (and higher quality) Osmo Pocket.

    This setting is why I sold my Feiyu AK2000, which was fine but as a solo creator, active track is a game changer. I hope DJI continues to improve this feature and eliminates the random pauses I noticed as you were walking, it kinda thought you were getting ready to stop but then it kept going. Watched all three videos before setting up my Ronin.

    • @JakeSloan
      @JakeSloan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s awesome! I’ve also been using tracking (not active track) to presetup shots to record myself

    • @firpofutbol
      @firpofutbol 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JakeSloan ya the feiyu had that feature I use to use it for various shots very smooth. For self record, while smooth, that brings it's own set of challenges such as planning the timing and framing of where you're going to be. I think with active track it'll be a matter of being decisive and smooth with movement so as to not confuse DJI. I'm sure good shots can be accomplished 10x easier than with non active track, similar to DJI drones which act in the same way. Can't wait to give it a try!

    Ive noticed sometimes its difficult to keep things in frame because the vertical distance between the camera lens and the phone lens is fairly significant. so if something is in frame in the phone it sometimes falls out of frame or out of center in the camera. But the wider angle lenses definitely make this less noticeable. Pretty awesome setup by Ronin though.

    I have the Ronin SC and have been struggling with it. The biggest issue is using the mount and a phone. I have successfully balanced it without the phone and mount. I assume the correct way is to have the phone and the mount on the camera and then balance it. The problem I think is the constant rebalancing as the weight will be different when I want to use it without the phone mounted. I did try with some luck by locking one of the motors, but I don't think the Ronin liked it. Any suggestions?

    • @JakeSloan
      @JakeSloan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes if you want to use it with active track you need to balance it with the phone on top of the camera. If you want to use it without the phone (not using active track) you will need to balance it that way (without the phone) basically any time you change the setup a lot weight wise you will need to rebalance the gimbal.

    Hi Bud, I tried my darndest to set the SC up to do Active Track and finally conceded defeat. The phone mount supplied with the Ronin SC seems to be a beast for some reason and is just too heavy in addition to the Sony a6400 plus a smart phone and a lens with any glass. The tilt axis just couldn't do it, and if it would have made it, the usable range would have been too limiting for my taste. Little disappointed but I returned the SC and got the S, and yes it is bigger, but I had no problem balancing and using the feature (and the app is the same so your tutorial was still useful!). This thing is a beast and I can't put it down, even though the SC does have some features that the S doesn't have including a bunch of accessories that I had to purchase separate. Anyway, just my 2 cents!

    • @JakeSloan
      @JakeSloan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting but you are right. Either way it makes the range pretty limited due to the size and weight. I’ll be curious to see how DJI addresses this in the next generation of ronin gimbals. I’m sure we will find out in a few weeks. Cheers man!!

    4:58 So I’m a little confused about what happens when you hit the home button. Does it keep tracking even when the Ronin app is in the background?
    If that’s true, can you set up active track and then switch your phone to a camera app (Moment, Filmic Pro, etc.) and start recording and it keeps tracking? This would be super useful to get a different angle of the same tracking sequence.
    Has anyone tried using a smartphone as the main camera with this gimbal? I can think of a few times that would be really useful for my workflow. Specifically when I need good audio for a lightweight, mobile shot. I would consider mounting my mixpre3, my phone, and a microphone (still well under the 2kg max payload) and then I wouldn’t need a bag or anything. Totally self-contained lightweight gimbal. Not something I need that often, but when I need it it would be awesome.
    Thoughts on a setup like that, anyone? And does anyone know if the phone can record while tracking?

    So, I'm interested in using active tracking to film solo dance videos, camera mounted on tripod. I'd like to track the subject at full length with their whole body in the frame. This would allow the dancers movements to dictate where the shot is. My worry is the Ronin seems to put subjects in the centre of the (phone) frame. This might chop off feet/lower body. Can you offset the camera angle compared to the phone angle or should I just shoot from a bit further back and crop in post? Any ideas if the active tracking would be useful in my intended scenario? Thanks!

    • @JakeSloan

    Do you have a problem with eye piece hitting the motor when using the Tamron 28-75 lens?

    • @JakeSloan
      @JakeSloan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes unfortunately, however you can set the tilt of the camera with it set so that the eye piece just barely misses and the gimbal will still work well even though it isn’t perfectly balanced. The other option is to remove the eye piece or use a plate made by small rig to add some weights to the back of the camera
