These little narrow gauge “cabeese” are definitely adorable compared to the larger ones. (The thing I always love is the amenities and work space. It’s like a literal step back in time)
Once again an amazing overview! I had the opportunity to ride in the caboose while visiting the Nevada Northern a few years back, and it was absolutely amazing! Thank you for continuing to share these historic pieces with us.
Thanks for this tour of the bobber caboose, especially because it showed the interior. My HO scale shops did the reverse and removed the cupola from a bobber to make it a transfer caboose. Since my railroad uses diesels, I also had to install a coal storage bin outside the enginehouse to supply the caboose's stove. Cheers from Wisconsin!
Watching your videos makes me want to volunteer at my local Heritage Railway. I live in New Zealand so it’s all narrow gauge here and a lot of history is preserved or assets saved for preservation

My first experience with a Narrow Gauge caboose was my recent visit to Durango and Silverton as they have one parked inside their roundhouse Museum, and it really does feel like a caboose made for children, it's funny how small everything is
So cool so see some RRO equipment in actual footage. I also saw short videos of a Climax engine that's on stationary display and a working Porter 0-4-0 the other day, awesome stuff!

a few months back i was visiting family in Denver and stopped into the museum with my dad, loved the place. i didn't know about your channel at the time unfortunately.
Neat! Waaay back in, like, 2009, I sat in the coupola of the NYOW 8146, 1883 bobber that was basically the standard gauge version of this. I’ve always loved bobbers, they are so cute & cozy. But I do remember thinking it was a bit cramped at the time, and the coupola seemed to be a precarious perch. The caboose was originally preserved by Trolleyville, I visited it at the short lived Lakeshore Electric Ry museum that was just a warehouse on the docks in Cleveland, where the collection awaited sale. Everything went it’s separate ways, the caboose is now at the Connecticut Trolley Museum. A lot of the collection went to NORM, the Northern Ohio Railway Museum... I need to get out there some day.
where i live, theres a junkyard about 1/2 to 3/4 of a block away and in the 2nd storage yard, there was 1 thing in it: a caboose on a flatbed truck trailer. it sat there for fuck knows how long and one day when i was a kid it disappeared. supposedly to the cutting torch but i hope someone bought it and is now using it as a cute lil shack, although its unlikely
Awesome to see and tour a part of a game in real life and definitely been enjoying the RO series and learning alot about the history and mechanics of steam locomotives.
Thanks Mark for sharing an inside look. Great accessories and all that especially liked the stove and sink. Being less than average height I think I might just clear the door header! 😂
Australian and I think Brittish brake vans had, instead of copulas mirrored windows out the side so the brake man could just look sideways out the window and also see to the front and back! It's pretty cool but I do think copulas are more exiting and eye-catching. It's always fun to see a comparison between video games and real life counterparts, especially if you've never seen the thing in real life before!
I never though i would get this hyped to check out train related vids. I literally knew nothing about trains b4 finding ur channel through kAN's "RO! w/ the devs vids" some months ago and Derail Valley. Also, can we get a homemade pizza vid with Hyce? Since the day u cooked it on the 491 and everyone loved it im craving the recepie.
I swear, the last 5-10 seconds of your credits has the harmonic playing the intro to Kenny Roger's "Just Dropped In (to see what conditions my condition was in)"
One thing I always wondered about on the old trains: Toilets. Did they have an outhouse on a different car, or a bucket with a lid stashed in the caboose? (I know, wilderness trains, 1800s... any time you stop, grab a shovel! 💩)
Would you happen to know why one side of the cupola has an X over the window while the other side doesn't? Looks like it's being used for support, but I'm not sure why it's set up that way.
I love this car. Btw I'm getting railroads online probably tomorrow. Look forward to maybe being able to drive on y'all's railroad if y'all decide to do something like that
Bobber, Crummy, Waycar, Caboose, whatever ya call em, they’re cool little things! Is she gonna be pulled for any events or anything after restoration work? Aside from the rough ride, a cabin ride round the loop sounds like a lot of fun!
I do not think comfort in ride was one of the considerations they had when making them. Looks just like the one in the game except the copula and conductors desk. At least it had heat and a place to make coffee. You have a cool job.
I have got to come out there and go over that thing with a tape measure and camera. Planning to build one standard gauge without the cupola (so like as built and what's in RR Online.) So I can move it easily on a trailer. At least I can make it a little bigger as I am 6'3" and it will be standard gauge.
That's nice. A caboose like the one in the game. Keep up El worko,it turned winter in the Midwest lows like 20s Anyhoo I seen Cass's Shays pretty slow but Torque! In its current state, the frame is supported by coil springs over the journals, yet there's a 1935 photo of this caboose in Leadville (Google image search) clearly equipped with much easier riding leaf springs. Why is this, or were the coil springs a workaround due to all the frame hardware and equipment missing?
Do you have a D&RGW Long Caboose at the museum? Can't remember if I saw one when I was there, but it would be cool to see the inside of that to compare to the smaller one.
We have three(ish) - the 04990, which is owned by the city of boulder, and modified from a boxcar and has no interior; then the poor 0585, which is a genuine D&RGW long caboose, but someone cut the sills (main stressed member) and we jokingly call it "the caboose that fell out of orbit" - it's sagging really badly and desperately needs repairs; and then RGS caboose 0404, which is actually in pretty good shape and has been in train service within the last few years.
If the railroad musam had a public crossing could you still use that cabbouse on your trains? Also I love the music you have at the end of your videos!! Is it available anywhere for download??
Hey Mark great video hey can you do a video on a modern D&RW caboos? Hey I was going to ask you if I ever make it up the CRRM could I meet you I would really like to do that and maybe see either one of the steam engines run? Thanks man your friend Jeff aka NW611J.
Do modern cabeese have toilets as well? If locomotives have them (like mentioned in one of the Jeopardy videos), surely cabeese have them too.. Also in case of bobbers, "Make sure you maintain 3 points of contact when riding in the cupola." 😁
Unfortunately there are no "modern" cabooses. At least in North America. They have been phased out for a long time in the US, replaced by the EOT device (think "computer brakeman"). You do still see them on various short lines and heritage trains and such but they are extremely rare on mainline trains. However to answer your question: yes many cabooses did have a toilet. Most of which were nothing more than a bucket, or a hole in the floor or a cassette toilet. Can't say I've seen a vacuum pressure toilet in a caboose, but I imagine they are out there on later models. I'm not a professional, just a railfan, I'm sure others would know more.

Different prototypes! The C&S 1009 is a modernized DSP&P waycar; the one with the handbrake in the cupola is the D&RG bobber caboose; which we also have! When we buy one in game I'll feature that car as well. :)
The game is cool, but seeing the real life equipment its based off of? Priceless.
Its so cool seeing all the old creative things they would put into the different railroad equipment
if you haven't, look in to the English stuff it's all much much older
I love the RO series and the fact you showed us the 1009 from the game 🙏🏻 I'm just happy to have the opportunity to follow all of this.

Like in game everything feels smaller even when it is to scale, but when it's IRL you can see the size as it is and most of the times it's big

It's fun at the Cog Railway because our large snowblower locomotive is a bobber, it only has 2 axles and you get bumped around a lot when driving.
The last time I sat in that caboose, it was 1983, nice old caboose, or as C&S would call it, a "waycar"!
It's so adorable! Cute little bobber

Even if the caboose is under repair, it look like a toy and I love it.
That was cool! Wish I had a bobber caboose in my backyard haha
That is absolutely awesome :)
Thank you for making a video on the caboose and love the videos keep up the good work.
One thing I always wondered about on the old trains: Toilets.
Did they have an outhouse on a different car, or a bucket with a lid stashed in the caboose?
(I know, wilderness trains, 1800s... any time you stop, grab a shovel! 💩)
Passenger cars had toilets that drained on the tracks. Engines and caboose's... Well, figure it out. Lol!
Would you happen to know why one side of the cupola has an X over the window while the other side doesn't? Looks like it's being used for support, but I'm not sure why it's set up that way.
The railroad figured it was necessary, I guess.
Neat video Hyce! I saw a red caboose outside that looks quite a bit bigger. Is that standard gauge? Would love to see that in a future video :)
It is!

Cabooses I thought it was Cabees
While the bobber caboose doesn't ride as nicely as a regular caboose, there's a charming aspect to its look.
Absolutely.
One thing that I made for the HO Scale Division of the Whiskey River Ry is a bay window bobber. Why? Because. It's on the WRRy FB page.
In its current state, the frame is supported by coil springs over the journals, yet there's a 1935 photo of this caboose in Leadville (Google image search) clearly equipped with much easier riding leaf springs. Why is this, or were the coil springs a workaround due to all the frame hardware and equipment missing?
Would be cool if Kumea and the guys added the C&S bobber to the rollingstock roster as an upgrade path for the cars.
Agreed.
If i were filthy rich, i'd get a nice private caboose and get it hooked up behind a train to travel the land like that.
