    11:40 nsfw artist here. This is true. When we draw we are imagining the best positions and poses in our head, so we're looking at references that do it best and picturing in our head what we want, so it's basically the same as fantasizing, and it turns us on.
    But here's the interesting part, once we finish the pieces, it does nothing for us. We never get off to our own material cause all we see when we look at it is "oh I could've done those lines better, oh man I forgot the shading there....should've done a different color scheme"

    A small misunderstanding on Melody's part regarding age in the old days. While it's true that we rarely lived to our 80s or 90s, it was common for those who reached adulthood to live into their sixties and seventies. But note the phrase "reached adulthood". The low average of 35 is just that, the mathematical average. Specifically, it is due to the ludicrously high infant mortality rate, where half the kids born would die before the age of like, 5. One of the contributing factors to the baby boom is that with medicine advancing, you didn't have shit loads of kids dying of things like Polio or Measels, but families were still having kids at the rate they were prior. it's like if half the class scores 70 on a test, and the other half of the class scored 0, then the average is gonna make it look like everyone in the class got 35.

    • @micahfoley9572
      @micahfoley9572 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      i think that could be kind of a myth, depending on the specific era you're talking about. cuz if you're calculating the mathematical average age of adult humans, it wouldn't include outliers, like infant mortality, right? and if we're talking about thousands of years ago, which usually where you hear that number, that would be done by calculating the age of adult human skeletons, and you wouldn't include infants, cuz it would skew your numbers.
      and when i was looking into this last, the paper i saw was calculating the average age of Athenians and corinthians from age 15, and their average age of death was like 33 - 41. and it specifically made the point that they mostly died young.
      but i dunno, you might be right. can you hit me with your sources? just a general direction is fine, you don't need to go hunting for me. i wanna solve the mystery for myself. i'll report back when i'm done (assuming i remember lol)

    • @micahfoley9572
      @micahfoley9572 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@EAfirstlast the second statement is definitely true. the first, i would assume, would depend heavily on era and context, wouldn't it? since there's a lot more uncertainty away from supply chains and walls and guards and people. you might do well out there, but you also might die any winter if something goes wrong. it's a much higher stress and lower security lifestyle, which i suspect is why people settled in cities in the first place.
      not to mention there are still plenty of ways to get sick, and a single mistake or injury when you're relatively alone can be the end, because you're so much more reliant on a much smaller number of people.
      actually, fun tangentially related story. the honda cub (super cub?), which was essentially the first super cheap, extremely simple and rugged, widely available scooter, is said to have single handedly lifted like a billion people out of poverty. cuz a village could band together and buy one, and suddenly, could sell their goods in cities, and reach veterinarians when their livestock got sick, and get to hospitals in emergencies so that a broken leg or an illness was no longer the end of someone's effective life, etc.
      Ain't that cool? Sometimes things work out.

    • @EAfirstlast
      @EAfirstlast 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@micahfoley9572 No, the first is a historical fact. Cities had higher death tolls then smaller communities. Because of disease and sanitation. Even the roman sewers were not... that clean (Roman bathes got changed once a day and, like... can you imagine sitting in a bath after 100 other people have? Yeah).
      It's cities that were vulnerable to supply chain disruption. Remember farmers grew the food they needed to survive, and organized their communities around risk mitigation. They still had famines (often due to military activities) and people starved, but if a famine was hitting a farming community, that means there's no surplus to send to the city that is NOT self sufficient (Though they absolutely grew what they could when they could)

    • @micahfoley9572
      @micahfoley9572 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@EAfirstlast no offense intended, of course, but if you haven't specified the era and region, you can't call it fact. you just can't really generalize or over simplify. the problems a given city faced depended on local politics and the technology used in it's creation. that was kinda my point. it's context dependent. native American cities from 800 years ago were very different from from central american cities 1800 years ago, which were different from the roman metropoli which were different from what the cappdocians had. you get what i mean? you have to specify.
      and just to be a bit pedantic, cities were vulnerable to supply chain disruption because they had a supply chain. something you wouldn't have living alone in the wilderness with only a few families. that's an advantage for cities, not a drawback.
      people built cities up from agrarian communities. there weren't really vast unprotected farms alone in the middle of nowhere like we think of today, because food and fresh water supply are the first thing you need when you're expanding your village or town, right?
      and the other pedantic little thing, pre-modern history doesn't really deal in hard fact, because the more distant in the past something is, the less reliable our knowledge of it tends to be. could you clarify what you mean by "historical fact". do you mean the consensus of experts?
      i think we might be using the same words to describe different things. cuz farms were parts of cities. without refrigeration, you couldn't have cities without farms. pre-modern cites were typically sprawling occupied regions, not just the keep. they were centers of trade and culture and commerce and learning. people gathered in them to protect their property from the raveges of nature and man, and they came in countless variations, all with different problems based on how they designed and functioned. you just can't really generalize. maybe you're talking about the communities living outside the walls as not being from cities? cuz what you're describing doesn't sound like what i'm talking about. self reliant tribes, living disconnected from civilization, and one bad winter from starvation.
      can i get a hint as to the regions, times periods and sources you're working from? cuz some of the stuff you're saying tracks with what i''ve read and seen about certain time periods in certain places, but it doesn't apply across the board, and your certainty feels a bit like motivated extrapolation, based on i'm not sure what.

    When I was with my first gf, at the time I thought my ding dong was average to slightly below average. Until my gf saw it and freaked out. Her jaw hung and her eyes were wide open. She had an expression that I’ve never seen before, then slowly looked me in the eyes. I was embarrassed wondering if her reaction was good or not. Until she gulped and said “baby… you said it was average…”, then looked at it again. I apologized, thinking she thought it was smaller than average.
    Looking back up at me, she said “It’s even bigger than I imagined. You’re going to destroy me if you try to fit that in there.”
    I used my hand and legs to determine if my ding dong was big. So, comparatively to my legs, it was small, it is 75% the length from the bottom of my elbow to my wrist, it was the same length as my hand and only as thick as my wrist. So rightfully, I assumed it was average.
    Didn’t think about the fact my hands fit in “Large” “XL” glove sizes when doing the comparison and how it being nearly as thick as my wrist would indicate it was girthy. Sadly her “area” was smaller than average and I couldn’t even fit 50% inside her without causing her immense pain. Then I just stuck to using fingers and my tongue until we eventually broke up.
    Her sitting on my face, being very vocal and grabbing my hair, all while I worked my magic was an unforgettable experience. Good times.

    good talk today.
    the thing about religion for me is that every good thing about it can all be gotten from secular, non-religious sources. but everything that's unique to religion, that which can't be gained from secular sources, is negative or harmful to us.
    and most harmful of all, out of all these things, is the way you have to have two sets of logical rules, and two different definitions of truth, in order to adhere to any supernatural belief system, including religion.
    cuz no one relies on their gods when it really matters. you don't pray to decide if it's safe to cross as busy street. you look for evidence if safety. and everyone's day-to-day definition of truth is like that, external to us. things that remain true whether or not we're present. defining truth as "that which corresponds to reality". but in religion, you're often told to look within for the truth. it's an internal model of truth. a version of truth that changes baed on how you feel about things. and that's so harmful t believers. it's how we end up with flat earthers and transphobes and anti-vaxxers. people who discern truth with a frickin vibe check.
    if you don't apply your logic and reasoning with the same rules, consistently to everything, in every situation, it's just meaningless. your epistemology has to be consistent for it have any value. and we all know this intrinsically. it's our concept of fairnesss. but for some reason, we're fine with breaking those rules for antique supernatural philosophies drummed up by some illiterate bronze age Palestinian tribesmen. it just doesn't stand to reason for me.

      Well there's destructive nihilism and you don't see that most religious communities. And if you believe in an all powerful God(which probably didn't bring to this world to have a smooth ride) you probably don't need to physically see him do stuff to feel he is in control of everything(whether or not that'll benefit your situation now).
      However what I do agree with you is that people(whether or not religious) are willing to accept often time problematic dogmas from any ideology(theisistic or not) to fit their biases on their views of the world and intepret in a way that fits said bias the most . Sure some religion have been reasons for wars, discrimination and brainwashing of those who follow them, but again every ideology is able to do the same and as long as people have interests and desires, I doubt removing religion from the equation would do much people would just have something else for a justification for what they do.
      As for the flat earthers thing you'd be surprised how many non religious people in America believe it purely because they don't trust their government, similar case for anti vaxers, can't talk about the vibe check thing because I kinda feel everyone at one point just accepted info for no reason other than they don't have the means to disprove it.
      Edit: I completely agree with the last paragraph, some people will follow a scripture we can't even properly link to it's supposed source, I don't most people actually give the time of day to actually learn about what they supposedly believe so u guess that adds to the ignorance.

    • @Krikenemp18

      Agreed. It's hard for me to find beauty in the more popular religions when I see all the pain, repression, and ignorance they have brought as part of their essential dogma. It's not a few bad apples spoiling the bunch, it's a rotten basket infecting the apples. I applaud the religious people who are able to resist that corrupting influence, but religion as an institution has been given far too much power in the US. It's an active threat that is succeeding in dismantling our human rights in present time.

      @@AbubakarRaji-c2z first, just to get it out if the way, flat earth is a religious belief. There is no secular flat earth movement. I'm sure there are some secular flat earthers somewhere, but saying that flat earth is is popular along non-believers is a little like saying creationism is popular among non-believers. The modern flat earth movement stems primarily from a fight between protestants and catholics. The concept of the dome and the firmament &c. all come from scripture. It is a religious belief first and foremost.
      And on a personal note, of the dozens (possibly hundreds at this point) of flat earthers I've spoken to over the years (everyone needs a hobby lol), I've never met one who wasn't a believer in some kind of mystical higher power. Usually the christian god, sometimes a more abstract creator deity. I have also met a handful of Muslim flat earthers. Surprisingly, I haven't really met many Jewish flat earthers, even though the passages they mutilate to evidence flat earth come primarily from the old testament, aka, the lightly edited torah.
      These religious roots are why they adhere to it so hard, and why there is no secular flat earth movement. Because for them, having made these faith based beliefs a part of their identity, questioning flat earth becomes is tantamount to doubting their god, which for them means changing their minds is an existential threat to their souls. It means questioning their own value as living beings. For secular people this pressure doesn't exist, and since debunking flat earth is a one step-process, it can't really get its hooks into them nearly as deep.
      But what I wonder about, and what I'd be curious about your take on, is not what people believe or the effects of those beliefs, but why reasonable people would believe in God at all. It goes well beyond the Bible not having an original version. Even if it did, there's still no reason to believe the Bible has any truth value. There's no good evidence for the existence of any gods, and as far as I've ever heard in my time keeping an eye on apologists and the like, there are no sound arguments for it. And when i do get the opportunity to talk to really smart and informed believers, it always, always comes down, after hours or days of working through the usual suspects, to them believing simply because they like the idea. It feels good. Even the best an most popular arguments for God fail on a pretty superficial epistemological level.
      Cuz having no reason to discard a claim is not a reason to accept it. That's the appeal to ignorance fallacy. The whole point of philosphical skepticism is to never accept any claim without good reasons. And this, I think, is pretty normal for reasonable people who care about the truth. If you don't know, you just say you don't know.
      Cuz we don't choose our beliefs. We're either convinced of a thing or we're not. If you're convinced that gods exist, you're a theist. If you're not convinced of the theistic claim that gods exist, you're an atheist. Whether that means you're convinced they don't/can't exist, or if you're 99.9% convinced that they do, you're still an atheist.

      @@micahfoley9572 firstly to clarify, I'm not Christian. I agree that flat earth is generally a religious belief. I guess the few secular ones (whom were also usually conspiracy theorists) I've met skewed my perception on this.
      Unironically flat earth(from a islamic perspective) isn't actually a belief the vast majority of scholars(both western and not see it as an issue of semantics that become obvious what earth in that verse means i.e earth as the planet or land) hold, I could explain their reasoning why if you want.
      My take on why a reasonable person would believe in God, firstly since I'm not Christian I can't defend anything the Bible has to say on God. One thing is the necessary being argument(which I weirdly don't resonate with and you probably already know), my perceptions on things is that if a religion isn't illogical or has no theological issues as well as contradicting information and has some facts that can't really be explained by any other means other than something metaphysical then such should be looked into, if such a religion exists then removing God from the equation creates an absurdity. Under this possible case reasonably one can say God can exist. For me directly arguing for God's existence isn't as much meaningful since even if that's established in a conversation, what perception of God is true then?

      @@AbubakarRaji-c2z right on, cool, thanks. :) I'm kinda jealous that you've met secular flat earthers. i'd love to talk to them. And yeah, never met a flat either who wasn't a conspiracy theorist. kinda part and parcel lol. You ever seen that big anti-science beliefs study by the Carsey school of public policy? I think they called it POLES. Really interesting stuff.
      Let me as you this. How do we know if something can't be explained? How do we get from "isn't explained yet" to "can't be explained"? Isn't that the black swan fallacy? For me, it's this that makes the necessary being argument impossible. There's nothing there to make that being necessary.
      Second thing i'm wondering about: given that gods are supernatural creatures and that the supernatural is by definition unfalsifiable, and that science (the only tool with which we demonstrate that things actually exist), is the study of the natural world, wouldn't proving that a god exists relegate it to the natural world and demote said god from "deity" to "alien"?
      and if that's the case, how can any theistic religion ever avoid being illogical? I mean, it's only logical to reserve belief in a thing until good reasons to believe exist, right?
      Are you personally convinced a god exists?

    religion in life is not necessary for anything (ex roman catholic)
    some people need to believe because
    1. not having any greater power over them is scary
    2. they can't cope with harsh reality and need that idea of great afterlife
    3. they were raised that way
    4. fear of divine punishment
    5. fear of being rejected by family and friends and society
    i don't mind if people believe for as long as they don't hurt themselves and others and stay away from churches and preachers (i see them as profiting from moments of weakness)
    churches should have no political power and have no exemptions on anything (does not matter if it's big or small criminal activity or taxes)

    That thing Mel said about how we only lived to be 30yo is a common misconception.
    It's absolutely true that the average age of people back in prehistoric times was around 30 on average, but that's mainly because the mortality rate of children was terribly high. And of course then you had hunting mishaps, and problems with childbirth.
    Basically, the cap of age wasn't that much lower than today. So someone 30 years old wouldn't look old or anything, the village elders and such would be in their 60s or even higher.
    Or mathematically speaking, the average of 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 15, 60, 60, 60, and 100 is 30.
    It's why talking about the mean age, or excluding the outliers, is more helpful for getting a good grasp of what was actually the common age of people. I mean. They had more children to compensate for the mortality rate, so...
