That skill/ability comes from years of creating beautiful music. The first time I remember Philip Bailey and Earth Wind & Fire using their vocals with another Jazz musician was on "Sun Goddess" by Ramsey Lewis.
I love how some of our older generation artists are so talented and confident about said talent, that they're able to leave their egos at the door to sing background vocals.
It's very very rare to see artists who are all at the top of their game play their respective roles so smoothly; no one trying to undo the other. Result: out of this world music.
No egos or power plays here. Everyone is equal . Wish our politicians WOULD TAKE A LESSON FROM THEIR BOOK. God bless our musicians especially jazz musicians.

Many moons ago I saw Lee Ritenour at the Royal Festival Hall London and Phil Perry came on as a guest and sang Dave Grusin's song from Tootsie, It Might Be You and I was reduced to a mess on the floor. Not just being one of my favourite songs but to hear this genius sing it blew me away. One of the true greats.
I feel it is humbling seeing these top shelf singers doing back-up. They're great and they know it, so they just had a jam session of musicians with mutual admiration for each other. The sound....perfect.
At the time of posting this, I saw where 25 persons had thumbs down this beautiful performance from some beautiful folks. I don't think they are listening or watching the same video the rest us do!!

Just lucked up on this. This is straight FIRE!!! The singing is superb and the music is excellent. The talent meter is off the scale. Anytime you have Phil Perry and Phillip Bailey on background vocals that should tell you something. I didn't know Nathan East could sing like that. Chaka is Chaka! Then you add Lee Ritenour, Dave Grusin and Harvey Mason to the rhythm section. With all that fire power they show super skill in keeping the music soft and you can everybody. Just superb!!!

Never knew that Phil Perry was a back-up singer! I should have known it as a musician myself! Back up singers are usually great when they break out on their own.I will never forget my introduction to Luther Van Dross who did the Charlie cologne commercials before he broke out onto the R&B scene.
