    Well what can I say I'm really impressed with how you've made these videos I've been watching them and I must admit you've really shown how things work, I absolutely love how you show part by part break down that's so fantastic and in my books better than a Haynes manual lol as for the lotus well that's my favorite classic car id love one of those so beautiful the shape the look everything about the esprit can't wait for that to be finished, what more than sitting by a river in your lotus on a summers evening with an ice-cold Magners or Guinness watching the sun go down and saying to the world " THATS NICE " keep up the hard work it'll be worth it in the end.

      SOUP Classic Motoring , Take the wrap off with a steamer. Like the wall paper strippers. This softens the wrap and it then peels of with ease. If glue is left behind then use citrus tar and glue. Wash and then finish off with Purple Passion to cleanse the pain further.

    One thought on the brake. Add a couple of brackets that allow you to make sure the knife doesn't get pushed back by the leaf. I've added some M12 bolts to brackets that are behind the bolt and spring arrangements on mine and it makes a world of difference when the metal thickness hits the 1.5 mm range. Fabulous content - Love your channel - I share it often.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Craig, thought I'd replied to this... the thing with my brake is I actually got the clamping jaw a little wrong and if anything it's too far forward. It'd actually be good if there was enough movement in it that it's push back but sod's law it's rock solid. Have been wondering if I could get it on a mill to have the edge of it taken back [and squared] but I have a feeling the whole thing won't be in one piece again until the weather gets a bit better. The legs are outside. Thanks for sharing mate :)

    • @ThrottleStopGarage
      @ThrottleStopGarage 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I made mine I just carefully levelled the clamping leaf with my grinder with a new grinding disk. It's been good enough for sheet metal work. It still bends a little in the middle because I've not added the stiffening that you've got on yours and it's been fine. I'm going to make my clamping slot a little longer so that I can add some short pieces of stock to turn it into a box brake of sorts!

  • @malcolmyoung7866
    @malcolmyoung7866 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good to see you back again George. You have done well with cleaning and painting the rear of the chassis and the diff...well the diff was being a bit 'diff' with all those weeping points but your nearly got there in the end. You are quite right about heating up the metal before hand too for penetration and the same goes for the caste iron parts on the sheet metal folder/piano legs and using a decent stick welder but needs must, my friend. Your Aldi/Lidl mig welder has done it's best and it should be good enough to at least get the Range Rover moving/mobile. The sheet metal folder may end up being the heaviest single piece to move and in your new workshop...(work with my here George) it will be a focal point along with the obligatory wood burner and 'beer fridge'. Might be an idea to fit some for of heavy duty castors incase you want to move it safely but I think that when it's 'in place'....it's in place? Don't forget the Esprit windscreen when you finally switch off the lights and close the door on the current workshop for the last time.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The old welder has more than proven it's worth. No it's not nearly good enough but I've given the Vogue a new lease of life with it so it deserves some kudos doesn't it! If I can build a workshop with a little office and a cot I'd be a happy man Mal, the fridge would be very fancy indeed 😀

    Hi freshandminty from RR here. Nice progress. Sorry if I missed it but axle painting process was cleaning with degreaser, then painted with two coats of rustbullet and then you’ll paint black metal paint over the top? Good luck with the move!

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi matey, yeah that was the way it went alright, hopefully I tagged the last of the leaks but if the bumph on the paint can is good then even if there's a tiny pinhole the paint should hold it until I get a better welder [and more skills] 😅

    Excellent episode George. So it sounds like the new defender is not even on the drawing board yet. My 18 year old defender 110 will have to plod on for a few more years yet then! As for the metal brake, maybe some foot plates from an old steam train would be good to use for standing on. Now you need to find a salvage yard. Good luck with the move. ATB, Rob.

    • @soupclassicmotoring

  • @oxo1981

    Love the show, brazing would be the default way to repair a broken casting, but would require a lot of heat.How about plating the breaks and using steel rivets. Or a slightly lower tech option would be to use button head bolts and acorn nuts.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Think I'd like a plate better than a weld or braze, if I've time I can make the plate pretty like some of the other touches too.

  • @Parknest
    @Parknest 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another top episode there George. A brace of Vauxhalls are keeping me from reviving the Dolomite but I'm keeping the battery charged for the day when I can get it running again.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is 'brace' the collective term for a load of Vauxhalls? I never knew 😉

    • @Parknest
      @Parknest 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      "brace" means a pair so I've got a couple of Vauxhalls keeping me busy. There's the Vectra C which I'm putting through the MoT (UK version of the NCT) and I'm trying to revive a Corsa C which hasn't run since I swapped the engine.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha so it does! What do you suspect is up with the Corsa? A missed wire or earth maybe?

    • @Parknest
      @Parknest 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fuel is getting up to the fuel rail so it has to be electrical. Either the coilpack isn't sparking or the injectors aren't firing. I probably did something when I swapped the engine.

  • @matthewjcapper
    @matthewjcapper 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    So satisfying to see the bits of the range rover all painted up! I think your idea with the art deco touch to the foot plate of the sheet metal bender is good and I suspect that if this helps lower the height of the step it might be a nicer to use. Depending on where you are putting it you could have some art deco style feet perpendicular to the piano frames that are designed so you can bolt through them to the floor

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like your thinking Matt, I was wondering about bolting it to the floor too. Hoping to make the foot plate curved too, but we'll see what happens ;)

  • @SomervilleMetalWorks
    @SomervilleMetalWorks 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good Stuff George. Sidenote to your welding and chasing pinholes its going to be more down to your welder than you ability a good gas mig welder you wouldnt run into those issues. Being a Land Rover owner and offroader. As good as new technology is you cant beat coil sprung live axles and locked differentials. I love to see the new defender retain live axles and come with proper diff locks. I've just been 4wding for a week in Tasmania with a twin locked Discovery 1 on 33's and it done all the hard tracks Tassie has to offer. That's also why its taken 6 days to get around to watching your Video. Keep up the quality content.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I figured as much, well I hoped as much about the welder. It'll be a grand day when I replace it ;) Love the oldschool Tasmanian adventures! That simplicity and brick sh1t house build quality is what I love about classic cars in general. Although some are more portaloo than brick house 😅

  • @LittlePixelTM
    @LittlePixelTM 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lovely one George - really enjoyed the insights into the new Defender - for me it should be a bit like the new G-Wagen - ie totally re-engineered to iron out all the well known issues, but be pretty much identical in looks and utility to the old ones. Tighten up the details, and remove visual noise like all the best RestoMods do :)

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah resto mod is a nice way to look at a potential new Defender... it'd be such a cool move if LR produced a live axled machine with a minimum of electrikery and faithful styling.

  • @terryatkinson3182
    @terryatkinson3182 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well done getting the rust off. Those wire wheel things you use on the drill only take off the loose stuff and from my experience they sort of polish the rust into the metal which comes back after a few months...

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The trick is using the grinder instead of a drill, and a knotted wire brush rather than the straight ones. Like these; tinyurl.com/ybzvqn3j They'll pull rust back to bare metal much better.

    • @terryatkinson3182
      @terryatkinson3182 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi George interesting episode. The vogue is coming on a treat. Went looking for a new car for the missus and went looking as landrovers as I'm a landrover man.two of my friends already had there strange rovers keyless entry stolen in London. They all look the same now. They lost there individuality. The engines are not grate (no offence Richard) not enough v8s, only in the big range rover. And definitely feel disgusted with the beckhams (she couldn't sing and definitely can't design car's.) landrover have lost their way and forgotten about the people who got them there. I think all things landrover done under ford and BMW were better and true to the original way of thinking. That said herself is getting a Mercedes and I'm getting my p6 v8 bock on the road. Rebuilt engine with hot cam, rebuilt gearbox.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tough to relate to the current LR offering isn't it, it'd be nice if they brought back a little of the old company. So did the cars materialise? Didn't mean to let the comments slip so long. The P6 sounds like fun.

    If you work on L/R engines, why do you fit big end and main bearing shells without the tangs that have been fitted for 50 years? The small tangs that stop the bearings from turning in the housings? I would love to hear the answer to that one. Paul.

    • @soupclassicmotoring
      @soupclassicmotoring  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was in the original plan Paul, I deliberated over cutting down the clamping jaw ends but I'm going to reinforce the folding leaf directly under the inboard ends of the hinges and then cut away the plate that at the moment is stopping it going past 90˚. You're paying attention 🤘🏼

    My comment about *some* other manufacturers not building their cars as tough had a perfect demonstration, specifically on the engine mounts, in Episode 6 of the last series of Top Gear - the Volvo XC60 broke it's engine mounts not just once but twice, while the Range Rover Velar sailed through all the tests. Would have won too, if Rory hadn't got lost, and if he could reverse a trailer - should have specified the Advanced Tow Assist www.landrover.com/vehicles/range-rover-velar/technologies.html
