As a metal drummer myself I find this way more interesting and fun to watch. 280bpm double bass and blast beats are boring asf now. Time to switch it up and relearn the drums. Thanks for a completely new influence. You’re now my favorite drummer.
Non drummer here. First of all, this groove is deep and his playing is f’n badass. Second, this reminds me of how tasty a lot of playing actually was on pop records in the 80s, but it’s buried in the mix. I’ve been going back through a lot of 80s pop recently and listening closely to tunes I know well. I’ve been shocked at how many great hi hat patterns, ghost notes, and intricate grooves are actually on these records, but are just buried in the mix or covered in huge gated snares and toms. I feel like I’ve discovered a new treasure trove of great drummers to listen to.
A lot of the guys on the sessions went on to be legends of music. And a lot of the sessions were done by the same guys. You can thank Jeff Porcaro and Steve Lukather of TOTO for a shocking number of 80’s classics. Yet they never got the cred as an original band.
You know what's really cool? I remember watching your videos as a teenager, specifically the soul vaccination lesson, and your videos have been continuously recommended to me from there. Your a groove inspiration and I'm a big fan.
PROOF that you don't need a million dollar drum kit to sound awesome! To me, this groove on a simple kit is way more intriguing than from a super kit. It shows and defines the drummers skills. 👍👍👍👍👍

I'm more of a metal drummer and not well-versed in 80's music but I can tell this man has put in the hours. His internal metronome is much better than most, IMO. You funky Holmes, love it!

Oh HELL yeah!... That kit sounds effing deadly and the grooves are super tasty, retro 80's goodness... you just know that this track is going to get sampled like crazy.
I liked the bass drum and the high-hat was nice and crisp. I like it when a drummer lays down a beat and holds back on the fills enough to allow one to feel that steady groove. And just when you think "meh" then the guy drops in some killer chops. Nice stuff.
This is so hecking tasty. Went back and watched some of your other videos, and it made me realize how far you've come with your mix too! So inspiring overall
