Train travel has way more style than air travel. And overnight train travel is nostalgic: approaching a destination in slow speed, anticipating the vacation and experiencing the landscapes of a country. Sleeper trains have been revived all over Europe recently, great initiative, long may they live! Tx 4 video!
Ti ringrazio di cuore, viaggio effettuato almeno 60 volte, essendo emigrato al nord italia, ma originario di noto, dopo i video bellissimi sulla Transiberiana, questo e il preferito. grazie dei tuoi video...
This train brings back to me a lot of memories of when I was a kid travelling from Torino to the south for the summer with my grandparents. It was an exciting adventure… sleeping in the top bunk and waking up to check where we were approaching… such a lovely memory ☺️ Waiting for part 2!
Travelled from Cologne to Rome, Firenze, Venezia several times on sleeper trains in the 80ies and 90ies and it is fabulous: first travelling along the Rhine with all its hilltop castles and vineyards, then waking up somewhere in the Swiss Alps the next morning, train snaking along lakes and crossing bridges and tunnels.
I have no words to express the joy about this video because i am fall in love with Italy. I have gratuated in Roma Tre university and had spend a lot of time in Sicily and Calabria for several university intership. I know every single station between Messina and Palermo or Messina- Catania, even on the line Naples-Reggio Calabria. This video make me cry just because I really love these palces. Not so the trains, but these places are magical memory for me. And this sea, this mithical story of Magna Crecia... I have no words. Be bleess doc7austin`s and be save. Слава Україні! Героям слава!
Excellent. This video reminds me of some of the Sicilian train-scenes in Antonioni's film L'Avventura. Both heros travel along the Northern coastline. Then, they kiss for the first time near Siracusa and a train is visible in the background. ...
Wonderful video and can't wait for part 2! I had the same experiences on two other European night trains - Nice to Strasbourg and Bari to Venice, no food, no water. By the time I made the second trip I learned my lesson and brought enough sustenance with me!
I was surprised that you were surprised that the conductor does not ask for the ticket on Italian night trains. They tend to check when the train is full, otherwise at the station or during the ride. Yes, in Italy everything is quieter, and I tell you this as an Italian. Thanks for come in Italy for your Holidays
Thanks for a most interesting video. I appreciate the commentary in print as I am deaf and I did not know if you had commentary in vocal as well. let us know when the next part is on, if not already.
Wonderful video congratulations. What a unique and beautiful journey. It seems to be very good value and you get a thunderstorm on a train as well. Sometimes rail companies fall down on little things like in this case no little items like soap supplied and no refreshments. Apart from that sounds fantastic
The train ride from either termini on Sicily (Palermo and Siracusa) is one of the most beautiful journeys Ihave made… the trains are seldom crowded on the island, but fill up on the way to the north. Concerning the fears of suspending the service: there was a comitment to fund new rolling stock for the night services to sicily by the italian government, using money provided by the european Unions Recovery Fund . Although most trains for longer distances in Italy are High speed trains nowadays, there is a great demand for overnight services for citizens working in the northern parts and visiting friends and family in the south. Hopefully we will be able to travel like that in many years to come
This video is fantastic! Intercity 1962/1963 is my favourite train for Milan. I prefer the intercity night to the Frecciarossa because the trip is much more relaxing. My trip start in Amantea (Calabria). The Frecciarossa (44:42) is not Roma - Reggio Calabria, but Torino/Milano - Reggio Calabria it passes through Rome 😉
FS ETR Pop has been ordered by Deutsche Bahn for RMV Frankfurt Am Main Wiesbaden for Main Weser Bahn. These FS T2 coaches used to run to München Hbf via Brenner Bahn Innsbruck Hbf route when built Brand New. That meant DB BR103 110 Brenner to München Hbf then Italian locomotive Brenner to Roma Milano and Sicily
the state of the physical track is in dire need of repair. There are (approved) projects to build a new two-track line between Catania and Messina. But it will be mostly in tunnels (with a new underground station in Taormina), leaving behind the beautiful views that the current line offers. 21:15 the Thello trains will probably never return, because Thello declared bankruptcy. And also because of high speed services between SNCF and Trenitalia became highly competitive. 30:36 until recently the E656 was the main locomotive for intercity services in Sicily, but they decided that the locomotive series was too old (Despite being built in the 80s), and with the increase of EMUs, many E464 locos became redundant. Also there are plans to use the E464s in double traction also in the mainland on night sleeper trains.
Excellent and beuitiful video as always Doc7Austin. I enjoy the great quality picture and the sounds of the train much more than videos with annoying music or someone babbling commentary all the way. This style of video is closest to the real thing and when I watch your videos I always look forward to my next journey. Thank you for documenting your travels and making life just a little bit more enjoyable for your viewers.
I live in Malta, literally 30 minutes by flight from Catania. I'd have loved to go from Pozzallo (the closest railway station to Malta) to up north in Italy by train, but that would normally take more than 15 hours. In any case, Syracuse is a true gem
@@doc7austin I did fly last summer between Malta and Catania. Sicily had imposed a COVID test on arrival for everyone travelling from Malta and I had to take one myself. Even though technically you do not need a COVID test to travel, Sicily is still asking people arriving from Malta by air to do a COVID test upon arrival. As to travel from Malta, either you are fully vaccinated or else it's two weeks of quarantine in a hotel at your expense. However, this might change
Surprised by lack of food service car on this train. Initially though they might add one when exiting ferry. But you didn't mention it. From a tourism point of view, the slow speed in Sicily and the windows that open make for a more interesting journey. I assume the train will speed up a lot in part 2 if it is to do that 79kmh average speed for overall trip. Looking forward to part 2.
Wonderful video, thank you. Could it be that the last shot of "Villa San Giovanni" does not match the rest of the video? I wondered why that train at 44:50 does look a bit odd, then I found out: That is the "Pearl of the Caucasus" trainset and the image is not taken in Italy as the electrification screams "USSR" ;-)
Better to pick up the sleeper in Taormina just Down the coast and you can then book an Excelsior-cabin that includes your own loo and shower , sometimes the shared loo can get a bit ripe towards journeys end .
Hi! Great video. Strange that you didn’t get an amenity kit. I did this exact journey in December and an amenity kit was provided (including soap) even i couchette class. An even bigger amenity kit is provided for sleeper class. Either the “capotreno” (train master) forgot, or perhaps they had run out?
that kit was only handed out after lamezia terme; so i assume the capotreno only joined the train in lamezia; i will say more about this in part 2 of my video
We have "the man at seat 61" who said there are amenities offered and a light breakfast. Here it is stated that 0 is offered. What is the latest updated info regarding this?
18:00 zero amenities? It's not true! Before Covid-19, Trenitalia gave to every customer a night-kit with soap, an eye-mask, a water bottle etc etc... I still have that box! 37:16 Here in Sicily there is a very old tradition of eating an Arancino on these ferries...
First of all, the pandemic basically slashed long-distance ridership through the country, and secondly because of the inconvenience of the timetable provided by Trenitalia - leaving too early from Siracusa to be a viable alternative to flying, and taking too much time to cover the 1500 km of the journey. Basically Trenitalia doesn't care about the train and the government isn't bold enough to buy new equipment for the service and offer the service to the best bidding company to provide the service.
I don't get it. why would the government want to suspend a popular train service, that sells out quickly?? (Your comments at around 15:00). I understand if they need to save money, but won't cutting popular routes even cost you more than you save? I must say, Italian trains improved a lot. I was born in 1988 and from 1994 to 1999, we used night trains from Germany(not Munich leg!) to Milano and then Intercity connecting to the Adria every summer. I remember Italian trains as being stinky, with dirty toilets

Great video, what an outstanding job you did, very well done. I hope to do this trip one day. Once again, thanks for creating and posting this.
Can't wait for part 2
Few months ago am traveling Catania Sicilia to Torino amazing 😍😍

Einfach nur GENIAL!👏👍
Very good detail in this. Well done. Every review I've seen on this service comments on how bad the aircon is in the sleepers.
if you rely on good aircon, take the more modern couchette cars

Ohh ohh... Finally in Italy....and Sicily😄😄...Did you like the ferry carrying the train over the Strait of Messina? Ciao from Taormina-Sicily.
Das ist Reisen in Reinkultur, ich liebe Italien mein absolutes Lieblingsreiseland.

If I am not mistaken, that sleeper is from the old TEN pool. Quite a rare sight in 2022.
Davvero molto bello!!
Magnifico Vídeo ! Estive em Siracusa 5 dias de Férias, em Agosto de 2021. Foi maravilhoso, mas muito caro !

What a great trip
I got to ride this train sometimes! Thanks for great report

as usual one more railway masterpiece from the author!

The train ride was in the middle of the Covid Pandemic, i think that is the reason...
Amazing.
BRILLIANT!
Can't wait for part II!
For such low cost tickets, I think we could afford the costs of food, water and... soap 😉
But on an almost 22 hour journey it's bad service not having a buffet/dining car with food and drinks available.
a wonderful presentation, full of interest and information. thank you
Fantastic 👏
very interesting adventure!
Enjoyed the vid. Amazingly low price!
Great vid.....first post ..yea!

No, this is the Villa San Giovanni. Only in Russia.😂👍
hotel is fantastic. hope (against hope) it isn't too expensive 😄
👍👍👍 super
There is a small mistake in the video. At 44:49 it shows a scene from your trip through Russia.
Terrible mistake!
why?
@@doc7austin just because what is going on now, whom gives 2 shits about anything related to Russia!
Nice video!

no, this is not possible unfortunately; you should take your valueables with you
Ne vedem în curând 🤝🤝🤝🤝😀

Where is part 2?
So cool😍

I can't find any ticket for ICN in Italy in the end of June.. any clue if it doesn't work during the summer season? Thanks!
Please watch my video; Tickets for many ICN trains are only released 1-2 months before departure
The summer timetable isn’t published yet
What city are you from?
We have "the man at seat 61" who said there are amenities offered and a light breakfast. Here it is stated that 0 is offered. What is the latest updated info regarding this?
i think i got unlucky with the service
Please do a video of Venice Orient express
That's not mango. In this farm there are lemons and oranges.
it really look like mango; but, its more likely that were lemons

If this train is so famous and popular then why are there only 20 passengers on the train.
good question;
It was filmed last September, so maybe because of the pandemic?
First of all, the pandemic basically slashed long-distance ridership through the country, and secondly because of the inconvenience of the timetable provided by Trenitalia - leaving too early from Siracusa to be a viable alternative to flying, and taking too much time to cover the 1500 km of the journey.
