Fair play to you getting stuck in and having a go. Regarding the bit of handrail at the top I’d come off the side of the newel post with a little mitred section before terminating to a half newel on the wall help you get it away from the door frame 👍🔨🪚

Best way to do spindles is measure the distance and divide by spacing. Cut the amount required and place all at the bottom then remeasure the distance for the packing. But check for plum as you go.

Yeah, my stupid mistake was measuring the slope distance between the posts, rather than the horizontal distance 😩🤷 lesson learned, and hopefully for others too

You need to keep checking as you go up. Spindles can vary a few mil and the spaces might end up a mil bigger each run and it all adds up. I usually take a spacer and an offcut of spindle and Mark it all out first

Yeah, great suggestion. I also realised I was measuring the diagonal distance, rather than the horizontal distance between the two newel posts!😖

At the top of the stairs put another newel post along side the newal post so its in line with the stud work 😉
