Man, as I played this game I would find myself wanting to yell at or agree with the other voices, almost like my thoughts were becoming another added voice to the many others. It was a trippy feeling.

There is a point in the game where the voices go away for a bit. I found myself actually missing the voices. I had become dependent upon them.

    • @Sojourner142
      @Sojourner142 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

I found this was the best way to experience the game, and they kinda imply this at the beginning. You are not Senua, you are another voice in her head. little details like if you try to look at her from the front, she'll always look away from the camera (you), but then there's the rare time when she address you (the voices) directly.

As someone who lives with hallucinations it is really great to see them NOT demonized, mine are not negative at all, just a different way of experiencing the world but i cant talk about it with people before we build up a close relationship out of fear of rejection. As someone with symptoms/disorders similar to Senua's, I deeply appreciated the accurate and artistic portrayal of a psychosis in the game. I also appreciate your analysis of it, especially your opposition to modern media representation of such being negative and psychotic.
Unfortunately I couldn't finish the game, as it became a little too real at points, but I would still recommended to anyone who wants a deeper appreciation or understanding of mental illness, psychosis or schizophrenia.
Much love to you and your followers. Please keep making amazing content.

Please take a chance on the second game. It's less about her struggle and more about her channeling what makes her different and using it. She meets people that instead of cursed call people like her oracles and hold them in high regard. It gave me a new perspective on mental health as a whole.

    • @Arcanineisthebest
      @Arcanineisthebest 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

To add to my last comment, the second game also gives the perspective of someone who already went through a journey of self discovery. The voices stop feeling like different, well, voices, and it starts to sounds like a cohesive internal monologue that is relatable to anyone. The voices contradict themselves still, but instead of different opinions like.in the first game it sounds now more like the voices are displaying different sides of the same coin. It made me feel that someone with these capabilities might be able to not only thrive but excell in their tasks and relationships if they know how to channel them correctly

I remember when I started playing the game, I had my headphones on and was so immersed in the game that I didn't realize my sister was talking to me. I literally thought she was another voice of Senua's until I realized she wasn't talking about the same thing as Senua's voices. It was a chilling experience to have lost my sense of reality in that moment. I really empathize with anyone who experiences psychosis.

I played this game for the first time last year, and it’s so wonderfully done. I found it difficult to play for long periods of time because the voices constantly talking, and talking about you rather than to you, was quite stressful and almost exhausting. As you pointed out though, I could choose to walk away and reset before continuing, and I’d like to think that I came away from the experience with a better appreciation for people who don’t have that luxury.

Oh my gods. As someone who has suffered from voices for so long, I was practically in tears my entire time through this game. As a Norwegian, descended from the ancient Norse, there's so much weight in how they chose to show the destruction and pain my ancestors caused and it is nothing short of a beautiful way to make me face the darker things my pride in my heritage doesn't like to let me acknowledge.

The game was an amazing experience! At the end, while engaged in the last fight, I fought and fought for about an hour being completely lost in my desire to get to Hela and to cleave my way to her. This before I heard what the voices were telling me - the "let go" I heard was like a punch in the chest. A moment of clarity. A breath of air. I had gotten used to the voices over the course of the game and had begun to mistrust them so I had blocked them from my attention; I never figured that in the end they were the answer. That will remain with me as one of the most incredible moments that a game was able to provide me.

It may sound strange, but when I played this game I quickly became protective of Senua. Her voices weren't generally malicious, in my estimation. Afraid and unsure, oh yeah, but not malicious. Even the one that spoke with her father's voice seemed more of the "tough love" type than actually wanting to hurt her (though those kinds of words can end up causing a lot of harm, too).
Anyway, there's a lot of great media out there these days with excellent writing. I mean, when you can actually psychoanalyze a fictional character it means they were very well written... Ok, that, or you're crazy yourself. Nothing wrong with crazy, so long as you can function and don't hurt anyone, self included.

As someone who has dealt with mental illness (anxiety and depression in my case) for decades and who held his first wife in his arms as they turned off life support, everything about this game make it the most personally powerful game I've played in 40 years of gaming. What they did with a (relatively speaking) indie budget compared to the ridiculous exploitation of triple-A games is just amazing.

I love that this game didnt demonize the voices. A lot of the times they were helpful, like when an enemy was about to strike, theyd yell "EVADE!" or "FOCUS!" which was a cool gameplay mechanic and also help push the fact that these voices arent evil and a lot of the times theyre reassuring. Other than that one fucking voice that would say "youre stupid. Youre stupid." If i took too long on a puzzle or something. I didn't appreciate that one lol.

They nailed psychosis from how i experienced it and it genuinely shook me to the point of me panicking and pretty much running away to calm down. Hi Georgia. Nice choice for your analisys because this game tells one of the best mental health related stories.
It is interesting how, in the first part of Senua's journey, the Furies (the voices in her mind) are more hostile than anything else, but in the end, after Odin's trials, they begin to be friendly and to help her, reassuring her and giving advices, like in the final fight, when they tells her to stop fighting because she is hurting herself and fighting is useless at that point.
Another interesting thing is that Senua's "Darkness" seems to be weaker when she spends time with her loved one Dillion.
I think it may mean that understanding from the people she love can heal her condition, helping her to be more connected to the reality.

Btw did you know, that Senua's actress wasn't supposed to play her role in the first place and has been working as cutter for vlogs until then? She had no experience in acting whatsoever and was only able to play her role by refering to her own past. I’ve had you evolve and learn to be a lot more empathetic with mental illness and trauma. This game gave me even more perspective of how trauma can cause psychosis. But even without mental illness, we all deal with negative thoughts that we have to overcome to reach our goals, so that’s enlightening and empowering as well.

I heard in another analysis of this game, that the fact that Senua's voices are often helpful (in a gameplay kind of way) is a bit problematic beacause it would be unhealthy to listen to your voices and rely on them. I don't know what to think of that. At least on the surface, when yourself or a figment of your imagination is trying to help you out, it doesn't sound too bad.
Either way Senua's Sacrifice was one of to most touching games I've ever played.

You read my comment, and you listened! I recommended that you do a video on this game a few weeks back on an Arcane video comment because of the fact that it was really the perfect game for your channels type of analysis.
It's so cool that you read the comments and listen and reply back to your fans!
Now having played the game yourself you understand exactly why I recommended it. There really is no other game that exists that did what this game did. Having two separate voices in each of your ears constantly wearing you down could be overwhelming at times. This game was meant to be played with headphones. This game was overwhelming and brutal, but that was entirely the point. Now you see what Senua had to go through and the game did an excellent job of putting us in her shoes. (and in her head)
You also mentioned the question of whether it actually happened or not is irrelevant. It was real to her. Perception is reality.
I'm glad you played the game and did this video. The game can be uncomfortable at times and quite brutal but I really hope you enjoyed playing it. It was such a well made game. It was so impressive that this small studio of 19 people impressed Microsoft so much that they bought them. The woman that played Senua had never acted before. She was literally the studios video editor that was used as a stand in until they found an actor, but they convinced her to play the role. 1st time actor with zero experience did this!
There is a Hellblade 2: Senua's Saga coming out soon and once it comes out and you do a video on that game then this video will get a lot more views. The first game is several years old so it's not hot and trending right now. Just wait til the 2nd game comes out though. You will get more views then. Plus I know you will want to play part 2 now that you enjoyed this 1st game so much.
I'm glad that you got to experience this game. Oh and great job with the cosplay by the way!
If you want a suggestion on something that is current and hot right now that deals with mental health (for a therapist reacts to) what comes to mind is the show "Euphoria". It has to do with teenagers and drug abuse with bipolar disorder. A lot of people can relate. So that's why it's a suggestion that comes to mind.

On a technical standpoint, it amazes me that this game was made with very creative detailed hallucinations. The main reason why the voices seem to be coming from different directions was because Ninja Theory used a microphone that recorded at a 360 degree spectrum. Three voice actresses would move around the mic while speaking. The way they moved sometimes correlated with how the voices would act.
On a historical standpoint, people with a mental condition like Senua would often be treated like outcasts. So when someone like Dillion comes along, who is compassionate and even loves Senua, she becomes obsessed with bringing him back. She has a singular mission to travel to Hel while being hounded by voices of doubt, which I suspect are an representative of the people who shunned her.

This game was absolutely epic in its characterization of Senua's and its portrayal of a Nordic Hell. By the end, I was in tears. There's a sequel in the works but that actually makes me a bit nervous because I have no idea how Ninja Theory will top this. I'm really glad you experienced this game and gave us your thoughts and insight.
    Spoiler,
The reveal at the end with the unwinnable fight and the realization that the soul being saved wasn't that of her lover but her own soul was simply masterful. The voices are still there but they're quieter.

This game has a whole bunch of things going for it. One of the more interesting aspects about Senua hearing voices, I found, was on the technical side where they warn her of incoming attacks. They're not just voices, they play a part. In a sense, that makes what they say a lot of the other times more believable, and that in turn makes a lot more of what Senua experiences through them that much scarier. Ninja Theory really managed to sell the experience of her reality.

My wife in her mid 20s is starting to experience signs of psychosis. She’s had a great amount of trauma. Oddly I found this game about a year or two into us dating and with the sequel having finally come out, ironically just as she is hearing things and seeing things, this game helps me see her fully and truly and hopefully I can better understand her and help her on her journey.
Fun fact her heritage is mostly Scottish and mine is mostly Norse. Quite ironic indeed. 😅

I'll say more or less nailed the auditory hallucination, in my experience at least. And yeah, dealing with things like that growing up like that you learn that some people don't want to help (sadly it's all to often family), and even when people do want to help many will expect the negative result every time.
I'm 35 now, recieving proper help, and have made what peace I'm likely to make with my family. You're right, in my case it doesn't go away, it just becomes something you learn to live with.

I just finished the game recently and I could relate to so much of what she was going through, the voices questioning your every move and making you doubt every decision. The moment that really made her arc complete and when I realized she is embracing her condition to me was when after going through the Sea Of Corpses she walks towards the gates of Helheim and the voices start coming back with their usual banter. At the gates she turns her head slightly and says "shut up, I'm not listening". This sent a chill down my spine, just a short line, but being with her through the struggle so far elevates it's strenght.

Another great video! When I played Hellblade, it hooked me deeply from a great game it is and my mental health of epilepsy. For me, when I had small seizure, I heard weird bizarre I had trouble understanding. Anyone who talked to me while having a seizure, it was like earring a language I did not know. My first times before I knew it was epilepsy, hearing those voices, I thought I was going insane!
It will be interesting to see what they do next for the sequel of this game.

This game was the first thing I played on my channel, and it blew me away! It was so sensitively handled without pulling any punches, and kept everything so ambiguous it wasn't clear how much was real and how much was hallucination. The voices were insidious enough that I could only play for 30mins-1hr at a time because they really started giving me the heebie-jeebies! 😅
Lovely analysis, thank you for the video!

I just finished this game last night, and it was an amazing experience. I work in the mental health field, on in inpatient psychiatric unit. This game is sooo similar to experiences that our patients have talked about, that it really helps to understand the experience of what they deal with and help us empathize with them, even though as you said we're able to put down the game and walk away. I believe there's going to be a sequel coming out as well. Kudos to Ninja Theory for the care they took in making this game!
