Jawohll! This is most likely how Wagner pictured it. they are the perfect match physically and vocally.
Bayreuth recognized the importance of getting the most attractive singers and it paid off. Who wants to see otherwise in a dvd. Plus their singing was superb.
It's true. Not only were Altmeyer and Hofmann great singers in the '70s (not so much later), but they also LOOKED like the Velsungs.
Bayreuth always prioritises Music. The looks as such are not that important. But the combination of world class singing and the interaction/relationship between singers is what makes this Walküre so special.
james morris: What an asinine uniformed statement. Yes, verisimilitude and ‘physique du role’ is important but never at the expense of interpretation. I would hear, and watch, singers who know the score, are musical and interpretive over physically beautiful performers who can only offer looks.
Indeed! Wagner is not shy about the high voltage eroticism between the sister and brother, and sensual beauty is a natural prerequisite. It adds to the piquant moral complexity. To a more Latin sensibility, even fewer clothes would be apt. But, after all, this is not Puccini 🤔.

Peter Hofmann is one of my favorite heldentenors. He is great here as Siegmund. He performed Lohengrin at the Met and it was wonderful! Jeannine Altmeyer is also great here as Sieglinde.
They even look alike which is perfect for the scene They were in reality, not related

Encore un merveilleux exemple de l'incomparable génie wagnérien ! A la splendeur de la musique s'ajoute les allitérations entendues dans le chant pendant l'hymne au printemps ,ce qui transcende encore plus la poésie de l'ensemble !!!

Keine schlechte Interpretation
Didn't knew, that Thomas Gottschalk is an opera singer.
Optisch der Siegmund schlechthin, aber das reicht nun mal überhaupt nicht. Ein durchschnittlicher Sänger wurde hoch geredet, mehr war er für mich nie.
Wenn wir heute doch nur einen einzigen solchen "durchschnittlichen" Wagner-Tenor auf der Welt hätten!

Solche durchschnittlichen, möchtegern, Wagner-Sänger haben wir leider genug, was uns fehlt sind die echten.
Man höre sich Windgassen, King, Hopf, Kollo, etc. an, das waren die wirklichen Helden.
Heutzutage muss man Siegfried, Siegmund, Tannhäuser, Walther von Stolzing, mit Klaus Florian Vogt besetzen, und das ist einfach nur lächerlich.
Und das ist genau der Grund weshalb es in Bayreuth Karten an der Abendkasse gibt, und die Vorstellungen trotzdem nicht ausverkauft sind.
Für meine ersten Karten für Bayreuth, das war ca. 1979, stand ich 2 Jahre auf einer Warteliste.
Ich wünsche ihnen noch einen schönen Tag.
