Forewarning for anyone who's planning on getting this: it does NOT contain any previous bonus materials, only the new stuff on the extra disc. If you have the DVDs/old Blu-rays with all the bonus features, keep them!
It also doesn't have the cartoon, and you know what I'm sick to death of not having the cartoon. You like cartoons my guy?
Technically there are some previous bonus materials on discs, those only being the extended edition commentaries on regular Blu-rays. In terms of other previous features, they are online after redeeming the digital code. Features availability depends on the retailer, so for example, the Appendices materials are on Vudu in the extended editions. But it doesn't seem like the LotR theatrical edition extras are available online.
Also, no 3D Hobbit.

What bewitchery is this? Surely an Ultimate Collector’s Edition should include the fantastic Appendices? One disc of extras does not rule them all.

@@insurrbution True, but technically I meant both Lord of the Rings *and* The Hobbit trilogies altogether; hence the name ‘Middle Earth Saga’. If I just said ‘Lord of the Rings’, it’ll feel like I’m leaving out The Hobbit, since they’re both chronically different timeline trilogies. It’s kinda like the Infinity Saga or the Skywalker Saga; the Middle Earth Saga is the collection of all the films that tell an ongoing story leading up to the final conclusion.

Nice packaging, just shame it misses out on all the previous special features. I was waiting to see what this contained. Now I have seen, I went out and purchased the standard 4K sets. As this is just not a compelling proposition for me. It could only really be called Ultimate Collectors Edition if it contained all the previous content...but it doesn't so....a pass for me.
I do not think that packaging is nice in the least. Horrendous photoshop job, especially of Old Bilbo (from FELLOWSHIP) 'holding' a smaller-scale Frodo, as it looks.
Yuck. I guess The Days of Elegance of the 12-disc DVD set from 2004 are long-past.
Not a single legacy special feature. “Ultimate”, this is not.
Not a big deal to me. I think all the complaining is misplaced. How many physical copies, of the legacy features do we need? Everyone probably has them, already. I have them from the old DVD sets, and the Blu-ray set. I don't need yet more redundant copies, of them.
Warner Bros. made the right call (imo), and instead opted to include the newly remastered Blu-ray discs [alongside the 4K discs]. And we still get the commentaries too, on all the discs. All in all, I'm happy with this new box set.
Christopher Brown you know, maybe, just maybe, many of us want to get rid of those old copies and finally get a box set that has "everything". Because otherwise what's the point of a presumably "ultimate" edition???

@@christopherbrown5023 Don't call your collection "Ultimate" if it doesn't include everything before and more. I wanted this as an end point to my collection, the defacto compilation of everything Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson.
Here's what a truly "ultimate" set would look like in my humble opinion:
All 6 Extended Editions only, on 4K and remastered Blu-Ray.
The Appendices Parts 1-12 on Blu-Ray.
The LOTR theatrical bonus features on Blu-Ray.
The Costa Botes documentaries on Blu-Ray.
The Blu-Ray bonus disc you promoted in this video.
The National Geographic documentaries included.
The Howard Shore documentary included.
Give us all this, Warner Bros., and no other box set, aside from maybe your 2016 book shelf box set, will ever compete. Harry who? Star what? You will rule the landscape of home media for the next 10 years!
Ultimate edition for every single movie should have: 1.) theatrical edition 2.) extended edition 3.) extendend edition with new scenes 4.) appendices plus Costa Botes 5.) new documentary
I have no need of new scenes - the extended editions of the films are fine as is. Sometimes, too much so.
I think an "Ultimate Collector's Edition" should have all previous bonus material, every version of the movies (at least the 4K of each version), plus some extra bonus features. It looks like the majority of the special features are missing, plus no 3D or HFR versions of the Hobbit movies (which I honestly would never watch, but it would be nice to have them in a $250 "Ultimate" set). Honestly I see no reason to get this when I have the new Steelbooks.

This set is a HUGE letdown. Missing the significant legacy special features... not an "ultimate" edition. Makes me wish I had gotten the steelbook set eve though that one had no special features. Hang on to your Blu-ray and DVD sets ppl

That's it? That's the "4K Middle Earth Ultimate Collector's Edition" I've been hearing about for two years? It just looks like a rushed school project that had no thought or creativity put into it. The last collectors edition you released at least did have thought and creativity put into it, they looked like legitimate books with its own shelf to sit upon that came with Bilbo's journal filled with beautiful artwork! But this? No thanks, I'll pass.

@@TheNeonEmbers It's the 6-Film Limited Collector's Edition (30 discs) released in select countries in late 2016. 6 Extended Edition movies on Blu-rays, LotR special features on DVDs, and The Hobbit special features on Blu-rays.
It used to be like $800, but it's apparently gonna be in stock soon for at least $399.99 on Amazon US (Region-free Blu-rays, Region 1 DVDs, Digital HD code of the Theatrical + Extended editions)

Yeah. I mean, in of itself, this isn't terrible. BUT, before last year's set dropped, we heard about another set coming THIS year. Because of that, this is disappointing: "what? we WAITED (key word) for THIS?!"

I'm jealous of you Middle Earth fans for Star Wars fans our Skywalker saga set is pretty pathetic compared to this better box art ours is just a black box with a death star also you guys have those beautiful individual steel books and more items just seems like more love and care went into it hope you guys enjoy it!

What an extraordinarily disappointing set. No appendices, no special features, mediocre packaging, no go from me. Certainly NOT the ultimate collector's edition.
All the appendices/special features are available digitally

@@Leatherfacet No, using the digital code that comes with the blu ray you get all the appendices/special features on Apple TV/Amazon/wherever you redeem. I did that with the 4k box set from last year.
All that for one bonus disc when older versions had more features. Where is the archived footage Jackson said you have?

A really poor effort for the titled 'Ultimate Collectors Edition'. A few scant extras, poor 4K transfers, no legacy extras, the extras included are minimal effort to hook those who feel they must have everything on disc.
An UCE would have transferred the DVD appendices to BD, there would be the new extras that PJ has been talking about for 15 years. He wanted to rebuild the Rings appendices to closer match The Hobbit ones, offer new deleted scenes, maybe even a new version of the movies to celebrate 20 years. This set is low effort BS to hook those who don't really do their homework over a $250 purchase.
I was hoping for:
- the appendices, transfered to blu-ray discs, even if the resolution is still that of DVD
- the bonus features from the theatrical editions
- the Costa Boates whats-it documentary
All of the existing and previous bonus content.

Yeah I think your intuition is right. Peter himself has spoke about the 25 year edition of the film. Honestly, I think I might actually just wait. I'll grab the current 4K remasters and enjoy them for all their clawed beauty until that 25 year anniversary mark is upon us all.
What a major wasted opportunity for real collectors. Missing so many previously released extras, and none of the unreleased extras people want. And isn’t nearly as premium quality packaging or bonus items that you would expect / want from an expensive Ultimate Collector’s Edition. Really disappointing. I won’t be buying it

This box set is a disgrace. 30 discs for movies, while you could have released a bluray edition and a 4k edition with ALL THE BONUSES out there. But no, just a little bluray lasting 1h30 or it will pour into self congratulation and very cheap goodies !!!! Give us the ultimate REAL box set with the 4k movies and all the goodies. I already own the 4k steelbooks and I'm definitely not going to shell out $ 250 for just 1.5 hours of bonus. Really disappointed when you were able to release the middle earth bluray box set a few years ago.

It contains extended edition commentaries on Blu-rays. In the US at least, rest of the old special features are available online after redeeming the digital code from this set (which unlocks both theatrical + extended editions). Bonus features availability depends on retailers. For instance, Vudu has all the Appendices materials in the extended editions. But it doesn't seem like the LotR theatrical edition extras are available online.

I could forgive the missing extras and no new deleted scenes. But postcards?!? I was hoping for a figure. Would have even preferred the bookshelf over this.
Extremely disappointed I did not purchase the Amazon limited edition gift set because I was waiting for this to be announced/released. Now I had to pay double for that edition but I still prefer that instead of buying this $260 package (I can't care less about The Hobbit trilogy)

I’m seeing a lot of upset fans here…I waited specifically for this set to be released to finally have the full set (I have them on DVD but when they first came out).
Can anyone explain to me what this set is missing that others had?
This one doesn't have the behind-the-scenes extras. Well, not the old ones, anyway. It's gonna have a bunch of new ones, though.

@@3BigChins Not to me, I don't mind their lack. My main problem with this set is just that the 4k disks used a lot of digital noise reduction, which ruined the picture quality.
@@3BigChins I‘d say „yes“, particularly „The Appendices“, which are 12 discs worth of extensive documentaries on both LotR and Hobbit and some of the best of their kind tbh.
It’s an understandable letdown they weren’t included here (seemingly, At least). This is basically last year’s vanilla 4K blue rays all in one box plus blue Ray versions (with the new color grading) plus a Bonus disc and some physical goodies. If you don’t have them on a current format (Blu-Ray or 4K) this is honestly worth checking out, but if the special features are important to your and/ or you already own previous releases and are looking for an upgrade, this might be a tricky purchase and not for you.
All this is something wonderful🤩😍 When I have enough money it will have to be mine by force, I repeat it is wonderful all this, the box set that every fan of the franchise would like to have, made to perfection in all the smallest details, mamma mia what a show🤩😍

Extended edition it may be, but it is far from "Ultimate". Nothing justifies me upgrading from the BluRay extended versions to this when it doesn't even have the special features.

More like way less discs, since this set doesn't contain previous bonus materials (except commentaries) on discs. Where I live, I haven't even SEEN a 3DTV or a 3D blu-ray in nearly 10 years now. I think that format is dead....
@@insurrbution I don't know where you live but on Earth, a lot of recent big movies are released in a 4K + 3D + 2D format (random example: Wonder Woman 1984, april 2021).
But yes, there is no new 3D TV anymore, but you can already have one (like me) or have a projector 3D compatible.
No appendices. No extra scenes eg. more last alliance footage. Forget it. What a wasted opportunity for the fans.
