    That battery bank uses 2v forklift cells. Neutralize the acid, remove all the red jumpers then you should be able to pull each cell out easily. Order the same cells and put it back together how it was designed. You can use 3m window weld as the cell sealant as well as the lid seal.

      Doubt I'd mix any chemicals without researching first in such a confined space. Yeah baking soda would neutralize acid but there's potential for a sudden volatile reaction. Plus I don't think you ever want to add water to acid. Adding acid to water is OK but not the other way around.
      Would probably be fine just a few drops like toothpaste on just the terminals but not dumped in like it's a kitchen sink. That probably wouldn't turn out very good.

      Since the batteries r bad . U could use a drill and a dent slam puller, like a screwdriver with a weight that slides on the screwdriver shaft. U can screw into the terminal or the body of the top of the battery. There is acid in the battery but it is not filled to the top. U also could make a tool. A metal pipe about 5" long 1/2 or 3/4" pipe then take a 1/8" piece metal rod about 6" long drill hole in middle of first pipe then fix one end of the 1/8" rod bend about 1/4 to 3/8" at 90 degrees. Now U have a tool to pull the batteries out. U may want to make 2 of them. Drill into terminal horizontal hole or drill each side of the top of battery. U may want to add 2 ( 5" ) battery operated fans inside to move the air around . Could u not get led lights that work on batteries.

    Running LED lights when underwater will greatly reduce your visibility outside the sub. Light needs to go from OUTSIDE to INSIDE to see anything. For batteries be sure to use deep cycle type like golf carts use, not car batteries.

    • @ChristopherGuilday
      @ChristopherGuilday ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some small LED’s will not effect your visibility. He can install variable light LED’s so if he wants some light inside the sub he can just adjust it.
      I’m not sure what (if any) kind of lights are installed for outside the sub, but it would be very very easy to install some good exterior lights. You can just get a rechargeable battery off Amazon and run some wires through the water to some exterior lights.
      Also, battery tech is obviously way way better today than it was in 1998. I wonder if he could eliminate that real large battery setup for one that’s way smaller, and then he could maybe hang it from the ceiling so it’s not in the water.

    • @GrantOakes
      @GrantOakes ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ChristopherGuilday Weight and buoyancy is something that has to be considered. Old type batteries are very heavy and the sub was designed to have a certain amount of weight to get to near neutral buoyancy. Newer batteries, while light and have more energy density will have to be offset with lead or steel weights added to the bottom of the sub, not the ceiling, otherwise to sub would be top heavy and could flip over. As for the interior lighting, red slighting would help to see inside the sub and would not affect vision outside the sub.

    • @mintymotorsports8120
      @mintymotorsports8120 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you've ever done any kind of confined space, you would know that you need to blow air INTO the space and not suck it out. Sucking air out can leave toxins inside while also removing clean air which = really not so good very bad air quality. When you blow air in you have a constant supply of fresh air. As an added bonus to fresh air you also get a nice little breeze

  • @M4ROWNER
    @M4ROWNER ปีที่แล้ว +36

    Great video, can't wait to see where this sub ends up!
    One thing I want to mention is that I'd strongly recommend using a full face mask/respirator capable of filtering out toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide, which being in an enclosed space with minimal airflow could become a significant risk. In addition to this, if there is built up hydrogen/oxygen mix inside the old batteries, a spark could detonate the gases causing an explosion.
    Those old batteries have a lot of potential to cause significant respiratory distress and damage to your eyes and skin. That teamed up with lack of airflow and high temperatures only exacerbate the dangers.
    Stay safe mate!

Outside lights are a beneficial, inside light would need a toggle to turn off and on. Just a simple battery powered sealed marine push light would be sufficient stuck with industrial foam tape. IMO. Use the KISS rule... Everything you add will break since it touches salt water. Keep it super simple and keep in mind having to service everything constantly.

      Good point about the battery box. If he goes back with lead acid bats that have vents, there needs to be some type of remote venting system. IMO I would go back with Lithium batteries. More Amp hours, less weight, and sometimes a smaller footprint. Use ballast weights to make up the dif between the old batteries.

    Two suggestions first for more comfort when working inside the sub on a hot day, use a swamp cooler with a dryer hose mounted to the bracket on the inside back. it will cool you off and at the same time flush out the fumes. The second is trying to replace the lead weights with water takes, with either a small electric pump or a manual hand crank pump. For the inlet, to the tank, try a manual valve that should work fine since you be under pressure. A for a name, " Happy Bottoms".

Red plastic over the fluorescent lights and all instrumentation was switched over to red bulbs. As for taking dc terminals off , use a nonconductive dremel. If you break the battery terminal, a new one can be crimped on no big deal. As with older trucks/cars, the ground wires will be internally corroded(replace them regardless). Very cool project. Any questions hit me up.

    If I had that sub I would do this:
    1. Add a CO2 scrubber, which is Calcium Hydroxide pellets thru a fan --Look up scrubbers for salt tanks-Yes you can upscale.. You can test the CO2 with a tester you can get from amazon for 50$ when you get it running.
    2. About your batteries, make a charge connector on the side or top of your battery case If you use 12V Lead Acid rig the charger cables in parallel to each battery.
    3. When you put the new batteries in, fill the inside case with a non conducting gel (silicon mold gel would work in the battery case).
    3. Lights on the inside will make it hard to see outside the windows(all you will see is your reflection).. Maybe add some lights outside.

    You should probably have the whole battery compartment removed and get a new custom one built with extra battery space. To make up for a loss of weight. See 3 old batter's probably weight the same ammount as 4 or 5 lithium batteries. And there are a few things you can do to balance the weight of the sub with out have lead weights all over the floor lol. Also I recommend removing all the sand bags and weights test its buoyancy and adjust it that way you personally know it's right.

    Also, I have another solution. You can just seal the box back up, and have the batteries act pretty much as a weight. Then run your positive and negative wire out of the plexi glass and use some sealant to keep the water out. Since lithium ion batteries are a lot lighter, you don't have to worry about too much extra weight added. If it turns out to be a lot more than you expected, then you can take some weight out in another place. I would be more than delighted to draw you up a schematic of what you could do to fix a lot of your problems. If you would be interested you can hmu and I will give you my email if you would like.

    1 - position a fan to blow fresh air into the cockpit while you work inside
    2 - poor coke over the battery terminals to dissolve the corrosion, then completely remove all connectors between the batteries and the sub itself.
    3 - after removing the batteries and cleaning the box, replace the batteries with Jel-Cels. These are much safer and much less maintenance.
    4 - replace the led bars with bags of pelletized led. these will be easier to handle and more comfortable to kneel on.
    5 - make friends with a local equipment rental center with a maintenance shop that works on scissor lifts. these have similarities in that they are (mostly) all electrical platforms with drive motors
    6 - consider building a pontoon boat transport to deliver your sub to a launching point. If built right it could hoist the sub up out of the water for easy transport. I recommend looking up the 'platypus craft submarine' for inspiration
    7 - !!!!!GoPro!!!!! inside and out

    The black gel stuff is electrical potting used for marine circuits and wires to seal and for items used in high vibration. Just buy some battery cleaner foam that neutralizes battery acid. You can use a wire or nylon brush to scrub clean. You can then wipe off the surface or let dry and vacuum up. once that is done those white caps should be able to twist off. You can fill with distilled water if the batteries are dry or low this will allow them to hold a charge. Put the battery on a charger to trickle charge it. Everytime the batteries are used and trickle charge the battery will get stronger. The plates inside can be clogged restricting the flow of fluid through the plates from the batteries drying out. The more that the battery is trickle charge the plates will expand and shed the debris. Heavy duty batteries like those really never go bad if properly maintained. Some factory truck batteries can last 12 to 15 years or more and most people change them out after two years paying tons of money for it. There is also a red spray after the terminals are cleaned which seals/prevents corrosion on the terminals for the future.

    • @Fun.Guy.Forager
      @Fun.Guy.Forager ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The potting stuff is hard to remove if you try it feels soft or gooey but is very dense and hard to remove. Make sure you clean under the red caps that are wired in series. Inspect all the terminals and wires for corrosive rott. I understand electrical prints too. I work for a marine company. Use some better marine sealant or install a rubber crush gasket on that top cover.

    Those are many small batteries wired in series using straps to connect the individual batts. You will have to cut each individual batt out after you have removed the metal straps. I recommend fabricating and using a small hoist/scaffold and winch to lift them out.

    LED lighting inside is a nice idea, but remember that most of the time you'll want to see what's outside the sub, not inside, and light inside will 1) reflect off the windows like being on the wrong side of a one-way mirror, and 2) interfere with your low-light vision.
    I'd recommend that you keep white light inside to a minimum. Maybe include a dimmer (which requires special attention fire LEDs, btw). Airplanes have red lights for night flying, and I'd recommend you also consider red lights for inside, either alongside or as an alternative to the white.
    When you design the lightning, think about what the need illuminated and where the lights need to be to cover those items. Think about instruments, including battery voltage, air pressures, etc.
    Interesting project. Good luck, man.

    I live practically across the street from off the wall, just a few trees blocking me from seeing it from my back yard. I might know where a team of electrical and robotic engineers could volunteer to do some work with you on it and possibly some other really cool things as well if you're interested in starting that conversation here in central Florida.
    Some initial thoughts on the weight that you mentioned, dive weights are cheap and easy to mount if needed to adjust, but I would assume that if it can be used with 1 person or three people that the weight would not make a significant difference there. As far as the battery box. It might be safest to have a fiberglass shop cut the whole box out and either make a new one and reattach or reattach the existing one but I would look for a good waterproof seal box or a pelican case to store the batteries in that you could easily seal if you remove the current fiberglass box. I would attach a water proof plug that would allow connecting the batteries to the main line from the pelican box and just attach it when needed with straps mounted to the sub.
    Most likely your wires will be burned and will need replacing too though but hopefully they can be cut far enough back to get past any corrosion and burnt wires. Heck if you're nearby or have it at off the wall again, I'd be interested in looking at it and helping out or providing recommendations. No expert myself but can get by for sure. Have a fair amount of tools as well.

    The batterys are completely sealed into the box because of any accidental leakage, the fumes from a lead acid battery are toxic to say the least, last thing you need at 100feet is breathing nasty green hydrogen sulfide gas from the batteries
    Plus the changes in pressure in the cabin makes the battery expand and contract depending on depth, hence a rubberised potting sealant allows expansion without leakage.
    Weigh the old and the new batteries, add or take away ballast according to the difference.
    Once in the water, move the ballast from one side to the other to trim the craft, strap the ballast weights to stop any movement.
    We used larger, but similar crafts on the North sea oil rigs,, I was a diver on the rigs from 1974 to 1981 it takes aprox 2 hours of checks and adjustments before you dive, you have a bit of a learning curve ahead before you can pilot a submersible,
    it's a bit scary the first time a tide catches you unawares and throws you around the cabin, but a well ballanced submersible will settle down fairly quickly.
    Just remember,,, small adjustments, don't panic, slow use of the controls, these take time to react to inputs.

My suggestion for the battery situation would be to rip it all out, put new batteries(match the power ie. voltage/amps/Ma's weight them before disposal. Just match the weight after no matter what battery you put in. Also maybe research some corrosion removal methods, I've used isopropyl alcohol high% to remove small amounts of battery acid from small devices, probably not the main way but you'll find one

    Suggestion - baking soda and water to neutralize the acid on the top of the batteries. Set up a fan to circulate air. Once the baking soda stops fizzing (you may need gloves and old rags to remove the water and put more soda and water on).it is then that you can use a wire brush and other tools to remove all the corrosion and then loosen the battery clamps. Eye protection is important.
