  • Made some DIY (hopefully) sound dampening panels out of trash and household materials. Not sure if they will make a significant difference, but they actually look pretty decent and were really fun to create.

    I saw a video a while back about making sound dampening panels. Supposedly old towels work well if you wrap or staple them around a frame.

    0:24 I notice most factory built panels are from that sort of dense memory foam type of smooshy couch filling stuff. I wonder if you could do the same thing with something like wrap around pipe insulation, it's stiffer so that might lend itself to being cut and glued into sound reflective shapes.

  • @kingyachan

    From my understanding, it might be better to use the packing peanuts whole, in a chaotic nonuniform pattern, maybe just sprinkled over the glue, should provide more absorption of sound waves

    Dang it man! That is a lot of work. Are you trying to keep noises in the room or from outside, or do you want to cut down echoes? There are different approaches for both.

    • @LowcastleTech
      @LowcastleTech  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hahah, yeah, was a good bit of effort, but I have all these boxes and peanuts I don't want to waste 😄. Was pretty fun designing and putting them together too though. Mainly I was thinking about echoes. It is kind of an open room, everything is wood and bare, and the ceilings are like 2 ft higher than average, so it's a bit of a concern. Noise reduction both in and out would also be nice, but I imagine that would generally take a lot more coverage.

    • @ntgm20
      @ntgm20 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LowcastleTech Gotcha. Have fun with it and I'm interested in how it goes. With echo reduction it is really about having soft surfaces with angles that will angle things in multiple directions, thereby effectively splitting the power of the sound wave. Wrinkly curtains over the window may work as well as your board. It would be interesting to see, but either way we would miss the Lowcastle unintended trademark.
      Tapestries in large historic halls also had the same effect. There were no chair desks or poole noodles there though you do need newer home tech!

    • @LowcastleTech
      @LowcastleTech  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ntgm20 Appreciate the heads up on that! I still have more to make, so maybe on some of the next ones I will try to create some kind of mold to match the shape / angles of the official panels, and then form the styrofoam into that. I was reading something a while ago that said alternating layers of material will absorb sound to some extent, which is why I went with the layered cardboard and styrofoam approach but wasn't totally sure about how effective it might be, if at all. If nothing else, it will at least make my background look better in future videos (hopefully) 😄

    Two words: fire hazard. Make sure you have smoke detectors and fire extinguishers handy. Also, the patterned foam might absorb /diffuse some of the sound but covering it with paint will decrease it's efficiency. Please, be careful!

    Lining every wall in your house with office PCs doesn't act as effective noise dampening??

  • @mattparker9726
    @mattparker9726 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    4:21 I think this will not work, and it's completely the wrong approach. As I understand it, sound "dampening" occurs when the sound of whatever bounces off of an object at a right angle, and then causes reverb in the area. Therefore, it's not the panel "absorbing" sound as such, but simply reflecting it in a way that it destroys or cancels itself out, much like a multiphasic antenna. So it's the OUTSIDE structure, not the foam itself, that needs to be angled to do this. I think if this were to work at all, the rough blended Styrofoam needs to be on the outside of your DIY panel.

    • @ntgm20
      @ntgm20 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I am thinking the same, but interested if what he comes up with helps with his issue. It could, even if it isn't the best approach. Besides, Lowcastle DIY approaches are always interesting and possibly subject to alignment by pool noodle.

    • @LowcastleTech

      I think, generally speaking, it will have some effect, though likely not significant. There are different methods of sound dampening and what you're describing is the most effective, that's why professional sound panels have the cone shape. That being said, there is also a sound dampening and echo reduction effect that happens with porous material. I'm hoping the blended, compressed styrofoam between layers of cardboard will achieve that to some degree. Beyond that there is just the general effect of anything other than bare wall and wooden floors that will diffuse and absord sound to some level. For example, if I was in a small box that was wrapped in blankets, making noise, the sound would be reduced to some extent, beyond if I was just sitting in the middle of an open room. Again, might not be significant or noticeable, but I'm hoping there is at least some echo reduction.
