This video is by far the one that touches me the most. I cry each time I watch it. I was raised alone by my widowed father and art was not something that was encouraged. I always feel like I missed out on discovering what feeds my soul. Still searching for it in my 30s... Thank you for this masterpiece.

Couldn't you just feel the PAIN on the father when he realizes that his child is falling into the same state that he and the rest of the world has fallen into. That hit hard
At the beginning of the film, “Alike” a father and son stick out from society. The son is orange as the father is blue while everyone else in the town is a gloomy grey. As the son and father progressively fit into the norm of society they lose their distinct coloring and appear grey. The son realizes that society is losing its sense of creativity and he would have to eventually fit and perform and look, “Alike” to everyone else in the town. The father realizes his son slowly losing his creative touch and decides to step in to show his son that being distinct is okay. The father imitates a violin player who his son looked up to in order to restore his faith that creativity exists scarcely in society. The short film, “Alike” demonstrates that one can still be creative in modern society despite the monotony in society,
I just assumed the boring monotony took their happiness away, and the father was happy only when his son was (hence being blue whenever his son was brighter).
This is so profound. It transcends beyond the surface interpretation that “hey school destroys and discourages creativity and diversity”. The symbolic meaning is deeply touching. It is more than just school, it is also about socialization. For centuries we have allowed society to dictate how we should live and who we ought to be. We pass these “values” and “norms” to our kids, our friends and everyone whom we come in contact with and it is a stifling cycle. Here we have this burst of light, youthfulness and radiance in a toxic environment of adults and kids who are not passionate anymore; they have given up. At 3:59-4:00 he surrenders himself to these shackles and it is so heart-breaking. Luckily enough he gets his burst of orange back and this symbolizes hope. Children are such a gift to this earth because they see the world from an amazingly different perspective and sometimes we need to tap into that child who resides in us. We have the power to choose happiness and liberation. Let us reclaim our burst of orange and express ourselves however we choose to. Kudos to Daniel Martínez Lara and Rafa Cano Méndez who wrote and directed this beautiful short film.
I, as a child, agree with you, Sade. Parents are doing this too to us, and the school. School just destroys creativity as you've said, but parents, ohhhh they can do worse. The colors are well thought and are explained by aura. Or that is what i believe. Blue means emotional intelligence which appears in the end when letting the kid be creative in the end. Orange (i see the kid's color looks orange) is about selfe confidence and courage. That explains why the kid want's to be different and wants to maintain creativity. Others are white. It is said that No one has completely pure white aura, which is quite well thought color in this animation, since creativity is part of a human being. :) Also in the end the new kid turns to pink which means longing for affection. The new dad takes the pink kid away from the orange kid which is not kind at all and explains the pink color. This animation is a master peace! I'm totally impressed! Definitely Need to show this.^____^
True. Found a short of what your color says abouth you if you like black, white or grey that means you need help, and your depressed which actually is in the video of white people!
Even such a simple concept, with simply designed characters, can speak volume. This audioless film can still have a long-lasting impact on me. the way the expressions and movements are animated, the cinematography, the scoring, everything is just well done. I also love the color schemes in this, they're integral to the story, and symbolize how the father and kid's love makes them stand out, among their whole town, a visual metaphor for difference. Especially the violinist and the tree (which are colorful), the message here is that, a small act, such as playing a violin under the tree, will eventually make a change in the monotonous environment, I even have reason to believe, that that day, the violinist purposely stayed home. because he wanted to see what would happen, in the scenario that the son has almost lost all of his shine, the dad comes to the rescue and does something which society doesn't seem to like, because, seeing his son in this colorless state pains him, makes him colorless too. He's doing this for his son's sake, which in turn makes him feel better. Really, I don't have any issue with this film, well done!
You know what’s funny, a while ago my teacher showed the class this video, and my class was laughing and smiling and we all loved the video, but I didn’t know the name to it, so I thought I never will see that video again, and by the way I got really into watching animated shorts and then this popped up in my recommended and I was so happy to watch it! It’s amazing
A lot of short films have made me cry, but this one really hit home. I remember 6th grade is where it started. I hated not being able to do what I wanted to do. I loved to draw, write, and make my own worlds. I remember when my own father told me not to animate or draw anymore and it broke me. I kept going though. I pushed through. I made it to 8th grade. My grandfather had recently passed and I told my mother that I had been depressed for years. She asked what would help, and I told her that I wanted to go to an alternative school. She said that she would try and get me there, but my father was furious that I wanted freedom of expression. And now I sit, not doing any school work. I’m in high school now, and the teachers tried everything, especially incentives . I told them that it wouldn’t work. They gave up. All I go to school for now is to talk to people. I hate the school system. I really do. I wish that kids could just be on their own, like nature intended. I don’t want anymore kids to end up like me.
Despite the cheery music at the end, it's a sad ending. Red man moved on from the black and white town. Man and his boy will one day be absorbed into the society they want to avoid becoming part of. They don't fit in. They do have each other, but how long will that last when you're outcasts in the place you live. How long will they retain their life in a city of zombies.
This is my interpretation .The little boy was orange because he was "himself" different from all the other children who conformed to what society deems as normal (the other kids were white devoid of uniqueness). The little boy brought life to his father who hated his job and was drained of his own personality (turning white). The only thing that made the man happy was his son. That is why he would turn blue again when his son was around. The father did not want his son to be miserable like he was so he acted silly in front of his peers to prove to his son that being unique is ok. Be yourself and live life by nobody standards. Beautiful story guys ❤
Beautifully done, I have been feeling the same way. I loved the way in which the animators displayed this feeling of emptiness and loss of purpose. Amazing work.
No school is a places where you become, as learn something it is depend upon you to read good as listen carefull, as choose carrier that you have interest if you do something other like job, you will never feel happy. If you do a interesting work you may feel happy if you like that work if you get less amount of money.
LunaUmbreon Gaming, It's probably that we sometimes need to express our feelings. The color grey is neutral and 'real' colors express themselves. Sometimes we need to find our own way to enjoy life by your own choice, wanting to be something and not some thing.
This is what it literally feels like when parents say.. "im doing this for you" or im doing this for your own good" or this is for your future etc. They dont realize that what they are doing isnt making their children happy and they always focus on whats in the future which is not bad at all tbh, but too much is not good, especially when their goal to "guide" us turns into controlling us. :(
this is not about how school taking away kid's imagination or something. THIS ONLY MEANS: That we shouldn't take away others imagination creation, we shouldn't force them to be PERFECT instead let them what they are.
Mitsuko Charmaine Sy that's exactly what school does, my man, comming from a person who, as a child, was told to color the pictures not the way that he wanted, but the way he was told
Mitsuko Charmaine Sy, um no one forces anyone to be perfect and no one takes away others imagination. No one puts a gun to your head and force you to stop being creative.
Ty Smith American education is pretty good, you just never experienced any other. Here in US students can choose any class they want. There are few important classes that everyone must take. Seriously, how can some kid never take any math. Too many idiots in US already. Contrary, in Russia and I'm sure China, etc. school has only mandatory classes. Everyone go to same classes. In Russian elementary and middle school only class that you can choose is second language, English or German or French. Depends on school, some has no second language. Also one class is different for different genders. Girls learn how to cook, sew, whatever else. Boys learn how to use tools by making furniture (e.g. chairs, tables) and whatever else. The only flaw of school education in US, and very big one, is not hard enough classes (yeah, there are honor classes, etc. but only smart kids go there, not too gifted kids are not pushed to try harder enough) and geography must be one of core classes (American have no f*** idea where is what countries... smh)
***** no... the problem with school is that they only teach kids to pass tests. There is no financial education, or critical thinking classes. They are designed to pump out little obedient sheeple to follow athorety and how to pull levers. The only skills that they teach that are worth while are reading, writing, and basic math and it shouldn't take 12 years to learn this. Back in the day people where far better educated. Now a days you have to translate Shakespeare for them. Most high school kids graduate then blindly go to college because that's what society tells them to do. Then they graduate from that and end up working retail or some job like the one portrayed in this video just to pay off the enormous debt 30 years later. Then after they graduate they never even read another book. Know why? Because school has turned them off to reading and self education. It's trash and needs to be reformed.
Andrey Pavlov Let me put it this way. The American education system is not run by educators but rather by business men. Students are forced to be exactly like everyone else and are taught only to be employees. They aren't taught important life skills other than basics, they aren't taught in the way they learn (everyone reads from a book when people actually learn better in different ways like hearing, doing, or even seeing), and they aren't taught what interests them. You say a kid can choose their classes, but they can't. They can suggest classes like a language class or pe or something, but the school decides where the kid goes, usually in classes they need to graduate that grade rather than things they actually chose and like. When I was in middle school with my first chance to choose classes, I chose art classes and computer classes. All three years I was placed in pe when I only needed it for one year. The reason being that by the time they got to me "the classes were full." Come to find out, they didn't even have enough kids in the first place. There's a reason they give all the kids the same way to learn and the same tests and such. To weed out those who learn or do things differently for a higher chance of finding employees that can do as they're told and learn the same thing everyone else is. There is a reason they gradually take away recess. So you get used to not having breaks except to eat, like on most jobs such as retail, office, and even factory jobs. There's a reason that as you age, you are expected to turn in more complicated work with no drawings or creative means. You may think this is part of the learning, and to an extent it is. But creativity is frowned upon in these assignments. This is because it replicates paperwork, which must be done a specific way and must not have anything extra. All in all, the American school system was built to generate a mass amount of replaceable employees that can all do the same thing for the job force. If these things were changed, then we'd have a lot more people who enjoy their lives rather than regret them. We'd have a lot more creators and more sense of community because society would tell us to follow our passions not blindly follow the herd, being the herd together as people connect. We'd actually be higher on the educational scale! We're actually one of the lowest educational systems in the world. And what's more, we'd have more people that don't end up panicking or homeless or something because they weren't prepared for the real world, financially, mentally, emotionally, etc.
Super Fantastic Poplang I have no idea what you said, for one. None of that was a complete thought. Or sentence..... And if you're saying they can't write then one, you spelt write wrong (you used this right rather than the correct term, homophones dude). For two, they actually wrote quite well. Very well spoken. And for three, the alphabet wasn't necessary at all.
I like how the father has an orange tie similar color to his son. It’s like a symbolic meaning that the father has an inner child like his own son and he sees his childhood self in his son. Every time they hug it’s like healing to him, his father is dependent on his child to bring him that energy and inner calling of him but at the end of the video the father regained his own “color” by himself and it’s like he finally realizes the inner child that he always had is in him and he embraced that part of him that he always have had.🤍🤍amazing animation and I love the background music that goes with the video. Great color choices too!
The moral of the story is.. When we do what we love to do and be with someone whom we love to love there we find the peace and the true color of ourselves....! Anyone agree...!💘
How true! My friend and I are different from the rest of society. As she is extremely intelligent. And I have aspburgers. However because of this we both realize we're different. And theirs nothing wrong with being different. I totally agree with you.
Such a deep message been given through this video. Living in such a busy life people had forgotten what life was meant to be. Moreover the pressure from the education system as well as from the multinational companies made Children and employees robot. But somehow some people are still present who are trying so hard , that they won't let their inner child to be died as soon . Such a great video Thanks a lot for such a amazing video
I'm actually crying because I relate to this so much. I used to enjoy school but then I just got bored and sad. Eventually I started avoiding school. I would try to get sick so I'd have to stay home. I'd pretty much have a mental breakdown every morning, and sometimes I'd become nauseous because of the stress. I eventually just ran away from school, and I got put in a mental rehab hospital for a week. I don't regret it though. Now I'm homeschooled and I feel much better, but I'm still stressed AF.
WasabiKitKat Oh my God, are you ok now ? How are you doing after one year ? I know school is terrible and everyone feels the same way. I wish I could change the school system but I can't 'cause I'm just a kid. But hey, there are things you can be happy on other than school. You know you don't have to learn what people want you to learn that you don't want to learn. You decide what you want and what you want to choose for your own happiness. So go live your life ! If you read this comment, Hope it might help you cheer up. I tried my best to make this comment make you feel better...
+Connor Cormier - Schools should be teaching children what they need to be learning, but they should not be hindering any type of imagination or creativity; Without imagination and creativity, a lot of the innovations and progresses society has made - would have never become a reality.
Theres so many layers and messages in this short! Both that conforming to expectations you don't want can dull you, and destroy your passions. And it's such an important part of who we are as people. But also that what we do contribute to shaping our kids. Leading by example will teach them to stand stronger in their own beliefs. Don't let your wonder and enthusiasm for life die out as you get older, nurish the creativity. It's a wonderful short with so many small details. I always love coming back to it
Every Federal and State employee involved in education needs to see this!! They are so busy compartmentalizing children they fail to see how different is better!!
Tamara Crum Idealistic thinking. They not gonna listen to this. Unfortunately for them, they also had their creativity and imagination sucked from them
Mental health is a tricky thing. The thing is, happiness doesn't just fall into your arms, my friend. I know how it is to wait around to get better, but it doesn't work like that. Happiness is something you have to work hard for. It's not a reward or a gift, it's a thing you fight for.
What I love about this is that it shows how not just work can drain people, but school can too. So many adults think that children have it “so easy,” but everyone can feel bogged down and depressed
TECH SPACE You don’t always have options. In my city, for example, there are three high schools - one for religious girls, one for religious guys, and the last one is for the non-religious ones. Meaning, I have no choice.
Frostbyte just a while ago you said shadow spite copied him. and then you said he copied he copied shadow spite's comment. how can that make sense? don't woosh me yet if it is a joke.
This was beautiful. We got so caught up in life and forget the things that make us happy and to keep that which make us happy. The dad realised this and did something about it ❤❤
I think the reason the man with the violin isn't there in the end is bcs he lost his colour he lost his Imagination another reason is maybe he was tired of people judging him....So 1 like= bring back the man!
Jeez, those are really depressing reasons, maybe he just went in another city, because if you are crazy enough to like playing in the street you surely like travelling to another city to play in its streets too
Or... he is just on a lunch break... yeeeza ... ! If he had been there at that moment, there would not have been the opportunity for the Dad to do what he did ...
People saying school takes imagination away from people, that's why schools have art and gym and music and choir. Subjects that teach math and reading don't have a choice but to be bland sometimes
Georgia 1011 ...all subjects have foundations that need to be learned in order to create something, but there's no reason math and writing cannot have creativity injected into those studies. Rather than only having math tests, students could apply the math skills to create certain projects. Just look at how Ferrari creatively applies math in designing their cars.
Georgia 1011 the 'creative' subjects ate not that much more creative, we are still given instructions and supposed to take it to the letter.. there is no creativity if we all do the same thing.
my art class doesnt let me do what i want they want everyone to do the same exact thing. many schools dont have music. gym? us people with disabilities cant even and doesnt have much to do with creativity. choir ?? assigns you to sing only the same thing you cant do what you want they assign you to do everything
Think about this: Since everywhere is nothing but black and white, theres barely any motive of imagination and happiness. Since the kid always check up on the violinist in the colored park, he is living his life as a street performer, and the kid enjoys it, leaving the violinist motivated. Now each day, you can tell how unmotivated the kid has ever since his frist day of school because of how they force work and how he has to go through the natural boring education stuff. Since hes been unhappy lately, that also affected the violinist because it his only way of motivation, thus leaving out of the colored park. Once the kid was eager to go see the vioinist again, he lost faith and thus probably never going back into the colored park. Until the father understood what was his son thinking about and pretended to be what the violinist (his son's motive) did. Thus, when he enters in the colored land, he also went in color, not became of the land, but because he made his son happy again. You can tell how much work these guys have put into this animation and I really like this one a lot :) Edit 1: The violinist left probably he lost his motive of happiness and changed his carreer into a job around the colorless world.
The last video this team made inspired me to become a 3d artist, over ten years ago now. I would watch it again and again on repeat. I'm overjoyed to see them still making videos and that they are as good, maybe even better, than they were back then.

I watched this in the gym treadmill on a Saturday morning, planning to go straight to office after this to get some pending work done. Now, instead, I'm going home to my 9yo son... with tears in my ears.
I knew the characters seemed familiar! I think I saw a thumbnail from this in a Blender community, and when it said "made in Blender" at the end it was clear. Awesome little film!
Wow, I'm in tears. This is such a beautiful story you have made, and telled in a beautiful way. You really can feel their connection to each other and to the city. Awesome work!
As a student, I think it's true. Because every day is the same for these people. Nothing changes in them throughout their lives. The father is blue and son is orange. Other people are white because they don't feel emotions. At first, the boy wanted to go to school. He believed that everyone will do what they want and have a talent for. But it turned out to be the opposite. In my opinion, school takes away children's creativity and fills their heads with unnecessary things. The father knew that his son would soon lose interest in school, as well as in his work. That is why this movie is called "Alike".
Wow this is the most precious movie I’ve seen. Lil back story why... I have been teaching Spanish music in a school of arts and culture. This semester I have been pretty ill and took time off work. I have this one student lil boy 8 yrs old that I see as my own child (since I can’t have children he is the son I wished I had) well... he had been taking clases with me for2 yrs. today I get a message from my Student’s mom telling me Eric ( her son) has been to school and has come to my classroom to say hi to me but leaves very sad that he has not seen me in school and was concerned if I was ok. And the I see this movie.... and touched my heart it reminded me (the violinist) and of my student the lil boy. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I feel bad that every single child or adult are all grey it’s because maybe they have their heart sad because things will never be the same if have sadness in our hearts even if the world is not fully colourful there might be a reason why they have sadness around the world and that’s why we humans fight ourselves, less sadness, more colours, and care for YOU! 💔🧡💛💚💙
@Tiago Leonardo Arevalo Morales what? School strips any of the fun of learning away from lecturing and such. Learning is important but most kids do not learn anything. And you do realize that when some kids come home they don't have time to be creative or themselves because of the homework? Also some parents can be abusive or strict which also ways down heavy on ones motivation and creativity. So what if they're 9 or any age? It should be important that kids do not feel this way.
@Tiago Leonardo Arevalo Morales also dude, this is for your own benefit but please work on grammar! (especially since you're in the 7th grade) Im not trying to insult you but for your future spelling is important.

What an amazing story and story telling. I saw it alone and then with my daughter. I was surprised how my daughter also understood to an extent...I hope we all can maintain our "color" with some thing we like...

I hope you are better now.

Yea I agree with you the school system is shit
Your school is shit until you live in 3rd world 😂
You learn more exploring and experimenting and expressing your self free from boundres and the school systam is crap
Life in a nutshell, it takes away all joy and happiness and the only comfort we have are in the ones we care about
You cant have color without someone to share it with
The boy and his father are the most expressive and beautiful characters I have ever seen...simply beautiful!
The most fun path is not always the wisest... But is life worth living if you always take the wisest path?

Despite the cheery music at the end, it's a sad ending. Red man moved on from the black and white town. Man and his boy will one day be absorbed into the society they want to avoid becoming part of. They don't fit in. They do have each other, but how long will that last when you're outcasts in the place you live. How long will they retain their life in a city of zombies.
As long as they have each other, they will last forever
As you can see in the end credits the kid inspired another
Maybe they will be able to cheer up the others
I think you missed the point of the story
This is my interpretation .The little boy was orange because he was "himself" different from all the other children who conformed to what society deems as normal (the other kids were white devoid of uniqueness). The little boy brought life to his father who hated his job and was drained of his own personality (turning white). The only thing that made the man happy was his son. That is why he would turn blue again when his son was around. The father did not want his son to be miserable like he was so he acted silly in front of his peers to prove to his son that being unique is ok. Be yourself and live life by nobody standards. Beautiful story guys ❤

LunaUmbreon Gaming, It's probably that we sometimes need to express our feelings. The color grey is neutral and 'real' colors express themselves. Sometimes we need to find our own way to enjoy life by your own choice, wanting to be something and not some thing.
Also that we need to embrace our uniqueness instead of deafening it.
We are so busy in our work that we have forgotten how to enjoy life, little things.
That boy was full of life.

My dad had once a job that comsumed his whole time i asked him. ¿You work to live or live to work? There is no sense to live if you have no life.
The sad thing is that sometimes their futures are barely affected or affected in a bad way.

this is not about how school taking away kid's imagination or something.
THIS ONLY MEANS: That we shouldn't take away others imagination creation, we shouldn't force them to be PERFECT instead let them what they are.
Mitsuko Charmaine Sy no schools make kids monotonous and leech their creativity
Mitsuko Charmaine Sy that's exactly what school does, my man, comming from a person who, as a child, was told to color the pictures not the way that he wanted, but the way he was told
Being true to oneself is perfect, being so-called perfect just means an end!!
I don't know, a failing grade just because your kid decides to fool around during class is pretty bad.
Mitsuko Charmaine Sy, um no one forces anyone to be perfect and no one takes away others imagination. No one puts a gun to your head and force you to stop being creative.
can we reform the school system yet?
Ty Smith so when they grow up they can get a job like kid can't even right ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRRSTUVWXYZ
Super Fantastic Poplang I have no idea what you said, for one. None of that was a complete thought. Or sentence.....
School just makes me depressed

Beautifully rendered analogy of "All work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy."

You can tell how much work these guys have put into this animation and I really like this one a lot :)
Edit 1: The violinist left probably he lost his motive of happiness and changed his carreer into a job around the colorless world.

I feel bad that every single child or adult are all grey it’s because maybe they have their heart sad
because things will never be the same if have sadness in our hearts even if the world is not fully colourful there might be a reason why they have sadness around the world and that’s why we humans fight ourselves, less sadness, more colours, and care for YOU!
