Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. 🥰

Actually, you can find him a new female. Their don’t mate with other females when they already have one. But when they are separated they can be re-paired. I used to have around 50 pegions before. I m sure, try it, it will work.
Yes! I've raised pigeons and lost a mate to a hawk, after paired for 4 years. My widow did find another mate and had another loving relationship. Please get him a new mate...he will take to her.
Yes you can get another female they will mate together because the other not around and you can force the bonding by closing them in one cage for a day or two
We have had homers for 6 or 7 years and never worked with pairing but pigeons are so easy I don’t doubt it

Actually males will mate with other females even try to with other males. Even if they have a mate. Ive raise over 1000 pigeons. Pigeons don't only have one mate for life. They rebound fast lol.
They do pair up again but only after their mate has been absent for a while. Mate for life is literal , as long as their chosen partner is around they stay with each other. Worth trying again with him.
@@Lazyspaceout it's not true for pigeons. I'm not sure why people always say they mate for life. I've raised over 1000 pigeons and seen my males mate with different females even when they have a mate. Male pigeons are like goat bucks. They dont care who they mate with. They easily rebound and pair up with another female very quickly.

Male pigeons aren't really that picky after a couple months time. You could get another female fantail but make sure she is younger.
I'm a pet groomer and it's sad that your goats are better behaved for a haircut than 90% of the dogs I groom.
You should consider getting him another mate after awhile! Once their mate isn't around for a bit (a month or two) they can re-pair with another bird
Since Dawn laid only 1 egg it could be that the second egg was eggbound (since pigeons normally lay 2 eggs) and that might have led to her death. Re. Pigeons staying a couple for life... Normally yes but if one of them dies they will immediately try to find another partner. I also had cases where the pair fought and they found new partners. Practically the same as humans 😅
You can definitely get him another female. “Mate for life” doesn’t mean he wants to be single forever. he would definitely look for another female in a loft setting with other pigeons. It would be a good idea to get another female for him rather than a whole new pair, leaving him to be the 3rd wheel.
It reminds me of like a wedding “till death do we part” 🤷♀️
I used to breed racing pigeons and birmingham roller. Males and females will readly accept other pair if separated for a few days(if not incubating). get a couple more, homing pigeons and roller pigeons are great fun, and a mini pigeon loft is a great easy project. fancy pigeons are beatiful but in my opinion way more subject to health problems. don't give up

So sorry for the loss of Dawn. I know MaryCarl on The Coghill Family Farm has a lot of different kinds of pigeons including Fantails, maybe you can reach out to her dad Jason and get more information on them, possibly a baby because MaryCarl has already been hatching babies from her pair.

My brothers raised pigeons. When the mate dies, the bird will accept a new mate eventually. Life with animals is painful. I have a buck who needs to be put down. Rabbit, pigeon, injured animal on the side of the road or caught in a fence… its all extremely painful but with new life comes new hope and that is so rewarding.

If you give him another hen, he’ll pair up. I’m 100% sure. If the hen had a dirty vent then I would say she had coccidiosis. Or she was egg bound. Sorry for your loss

Pigeons, although does mate for life, they will find another mate if one dies or is absent for a certain time.

Pigeons usually lay two eggs, maybe the female was egg bound if they aren’t getting calcium supplement which can be the cause of the death.
Never had pigeons, but I have red
collared doves, spotted doves, zebra doves, and diamond doves. They all look for new mates if the old one dies. I think I'm pretty sure your male will accept a new female pigeon if you get one
You can re-pair your pigeon. My cousin raised and bred Homing pigeons for years. FYI he had nesting boxes for his birds.

I have been following you for a bit as I just moved to AZ and have 1 acre. I want chickens but LOVE the goat connection - thinking weathers as pets for grandson. Long story short - learning.

I am sorry about your pigeon, she was beautiful, and it tough to see that happen. But I am more sorry that someone told you that about "mate for life". I raised pigeons for years, (20+) and they definitely will pair up again after losing a mate. I've seen it happen many many times. I would definitely get a new one from a reliable breeder to assure you get a younger female, but I am sure that your male will bond again with a new mate. I am guessing that your female was older since she only laid one egg and it wasn't fertile.

So with the clippers. Not sure if you’re aware, but as a dog groomer for almost 2 decades, here’s a tip. Going against the growth of the hair will actually cut it shorter. So using a 7 in reverse, which is what’s happening, you’re actually cutting it to the length of a 10. Rule of thumb is a 2 blade difference. 4 reverse is a 7. 10 reverse is a 30.

From a dog groomer, if you guys use the 7f blade in reverse (against the grain of thr hair) it actually equals out to a 10. If you go with the grain, you get the true length of a 7f.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Farm life can be brutal sometimes. I did want to let you know that while pigeons do mate for life, that doesn't mean that they won't find a new mate, if their original mate passes. Mating for life, means they are monogamous with one mate for the entirety of their life together. They will grieve for their mate, if they lose them, but will eventually take on a new mate, in time.

Pigeons can be repaired, I show German beauty homers and pair different birds that had other mates all the time. You could easily get that bird to repair with another female! Good luck :)

May I suggest wrapping your butter in parchment paper used for baking. Or lunch wrap, instead of plastic.

The experts have said in the past that Ospreys mate for life too, but since the osprey webcams have come online year after year, we've found that this is not always the case! So don't give up trying to get another mate for your male :) He may surprise you. I'm so sorry for your loss. She was a beauty :'(
