On the outside lands of the farm, things have had major changes, some good some challenging, some sad, but we tell ourselves that there’s always a blessing to be found at all times. You don’t know how important you are to all of us, in a world covered with masks, your faces are the few we get to see, always a warm smile, and a look of amazement on the boys faces as they get to experience all life has to offer on your beautiful farm. The cold front has definitely been a challenge here in Eatern Iowa too. It can be easier to clean out frozen manure though! Stay warm down there...spring is just around the corner!

We were able to discuss birds and other warm-blooded animals recently. They thoroughly love watching all your videos! We were looking at different duck breeds and saw crested ducks and bantam (?) ducks. They are so cute! I wish we had land like you guys have!
After dealing with frozen water for several winters, I invested in a few heated poultry waterers. SO MUCH EASIER!! I do have power in my coop, though. I love watching your channel and seeing how you show reality in small farming. Often, chickens, ducks, turkeys, etc disappear, or croak, or are eaten, no matter how well you try to protect them. I'm in North Utah. We freeze all winter. For the horses I use a hand ax and a bait net. Only uncovering enough to get to water. The ice doesn't get as thick. For the nice rubber tubs I use a rubber mallet to break the ice out. If ice is thin, scoop it out with a metal kitchen strainer. Depends on how deep your frost line is. I cover the spigots with blankets and bungie cords.
Move to Oregon 😂 it’s only snowed once and froze like 3 times super mild winter. We even got a lot of sun for the last couple years even though it’s the rainy state
I was having issues w the cold. It was cold for a long time and even got to the 40s here... The humidity was at an all time high and everything was always wet. Thankfully its 80 degrees everyday and all my plants are in full bloom and my trees have started to sprout. Miami

I think you're a little mixed up. The thing that goes on the cow's head is a halter not a harness. A harness goes on the body of a horse that is pulling a cart or wagon. Dogs often wear them for walking (I don't know why.)
harnesses are ESSENTIAL for dogs that pull so they don't choke themselves. they should get trained out of it but better safe than sorry-- when my dog was young she jumped off of a marsh bridge once and couldn't get back up, we had to pull her out by the harness lol
Tip for frozen water tanks. Use a hatchet to brake up the ice in larger chunks, it makes it easier to chop the ice and to remove the ice once it’s broken up

You can buy trough heaters for ur big tanks and heated buckets for smaller animals but i don't know what you could do for all the birds(other than the emus). You can em at tractor supply and other similar stores

Minnesota being living the dream with winter being here 😫 we have been getting -20 to -40 below Fahrenheit just this week only. And planning to get even more snow this upcoming week with very low temps 🥶🥶 and with my chickens laying still in these colds temps is just crazy only thing i got to worry about is frostbite for one of my hens since she has a bigger comb than the other 2. Glad spring is almost here!!
Agreed we started with two black silkies and 10 California White Hens. Like everything we last two within the first couple of days. It has been a week later for the chicks. We have been inspired by your farm life and going to give it a try.
I think we all are fed up with frozen water! A simple solution we have found is emptying the water pans after the birds have gone to bed. They won't need it, their sleeping and it saves you from having to break solid ice during morning chores
Happy Families happy times. I had two domestic ducks, male and female, and two Mallard ducks that I caught when they were abandoned, male and female. In the winter, I would take them several blocks up the street, a foot of snow everywhere, and I would toss them up and they would fly straight down the road and then make a sharp bank to my house and land right in the backyard. I let them all go in a large pond in the next town over and a few years later went to visit and they were still there with about 20 more ducks, all from mine. they stayed all year round ever since then.

You could try putting balls in the cows trough (the type you get in a ball pit) to stop it from freezing as much/makes it easier to break up the ice, it works for my horses but the again I have 4 so the water is getting agitated more frequently
I feel your pain, just this morning - 8 low and - 26 windchill here in southeast Minnesota. My feral cats haven't showed up in 2 days, staying hunkered down.
We are currently staying in France. We look after two sheep and 5 chickens so we have to empty out their frozen water each morning but it's nothing compared to how much you guys have to do daily to care for all your animals 😅
If you fill a plastic bottle with 1/4 salt, 1/2 (cooled) boiled water and 1/4 air and you put it in de waterbuckets, the bottle will keep moving and will prevent de water from freezing 🙂
A friend never let her chickens eat raw eggshells. She said they might begin to eat the eggs. She always baked shells and feed them back to the chickens.
You could place an empty bottle or jerrycan in the water with the animals fill the bottle with 1/4 salt 1/2 boiled and cooled of water and 1/4 air...that should do the trick on keeping an open spot in the water
A small handheld blowtorch may help thaw the water quicker! A friend of mine has one that he uses for a ton of things, he said that it was pretty cheap
try the The Indian Fantail pigeon is very calm and gentle in nature. It is naturally tame and confiding. And it’s easy to train these birds. They can’t fly well, so keep them safe from cats and other predators. we have some very good and gentle breed
Though I do miss living where it snows, I don't envy you right now. Other times of the year, often. Playing in the snow did look like a lot of fun though.
Here in Wisconsin we have had single digit temps for a week and have accumulated three feet of snow. It is going to be super wet when it all melts. I am seriously contemplating why I live in Wisconsin.
Honda makes a silent running generator up to 2k watts and you can side by side them to double the power if you need to. Definitely worth the investment. Edit: I just looked and they make them silent up to 7k watts now. That is amazing!
the batteries are not able to function properly in that much cold, try and find a way to insulate them and a small heater to slightly warm them. they actually sell heated batteries

I came to check my chickens this afternoon, and there was a raccoon inside of the coop. Fortunately it didn’t care about the chickens, only the food 😂

The Mandarin Ducks are so beautiful! I can't imagine all of the work yall have to to every day for all of the animals.
It takes all morning... but they are beautiful to enjoy. Chores are much quicker in the warmer months.
I saw a ole farmer one time take thick rope with knots in it , he hun it loose over side and lifted the ice out and filled

It’s so difficult for animals in that situation! And generators are really important.
You might want to consider running the generator in a location further away from the hay or you won't have to worry about that area being cold.

It’s gotten to be -15 in Minnesota. My cousins in Montana are in -36 weather right now with a wind chill of -59

It amazes me that the exotic birds do so well when it is that cold. It's not like they get a winter coat.

You can sink a sealed bottle of salt water in the bowl. Makes it take a bit longer to freeze.

I use those rubber bowls too. I put a ping png ball in it. It will still freeze but it takes a little longer. Hate this weather.
