We had one of our sheep freeze to the ground we thought she wouldn’t make it, she is my favorite sheep and acts like a dog she follows me everywhere. It’s amazing she made it but scary that it happened. I spend a long time trying to brush her fur out.
The cold front has definitely been a challenge here in Eatern Iowa too. It can be easier to clean out frozen manure though! Stay warm down there...spring is just around the corner!
It's the cold weather killing the batteries. Try getting them Indoors and stick them on a maintenance charge. Take them back in before night and you will have 0 problems. It often happens with vehicles too.
Tip for next winter, as I sit here typing this in August (gosh I'm behind my TH-cam...) If you put blue insulation foam inside the box with your batteries (on all sides) it'll keep it working. Blue foam is the ultimate fix for homesteads, I swear. (You can also put it under water dishes to keep them from freezing, as well as several other things.) Though, generators are never a bad thing to have around for sure.

I was having issues w the cold. It was cold for a long time and even got to the 40s here... The humidity was at an all time high and everything was always wet. Thankfully its 80 degrees everyday and all my plants are in full bloom and my trees have started to sprout. Miami
After dealing with frozen water for several winters, I invested in a few heated poultry waterers. SO MUCH EASIER!! I do have power in my coop, though. I love watching your channel and seeing how you show reality in small farming. Often, chickens, ducks, turkeys, etc disappear, or croak, or are eaten, no matter how well you try to protect them. Oh no! Slater, too! I am so sorry! I hope he comes back! I homeschool my 3 kids, and my younger two are in 3rd grade science together. We were able to discuss birds and other warm-blooded animals recently. They thoroughly love watching all your videos! We were looking at different duck breeds and saw crested ducks and bantam (?) ducks. They are so cute! I wish we had land like you guys have!
I'm in North Utah. We freeze all winter. For the horses I use a hand ax and a bait net. Only uncovering enough to get to water. The ice doesn't get as thick. For the nice rubber tubs I use a rubber mallet to break the ice out. If ice is thin, scoop it out with a metal kitchen strainer. Depends on how deep your frost line is. I cover the spigots with blankets and bungie cords.

yesss i live in a town just to the west of st. louis so we’ve been getting pretty similar weather! it’s been sooo cold and snowy but we just got a st. bernard mix puppy and he’s been loving it
Heh- I've got a big Anatolian Shepherd x Great Pyrenees and he to say the least- needs me to get my hair dryer he comes into the house so sopping wet and cold.
I have a little corgi/terrier mix that goes out and barrel rolls in the snow! Our big Curr hound tries to walk on 2 feet, he hates snow on his feet so much!

I found this channel about a week ago and i cant get enough. Now i want to raise some animals lol. Back when i was 15yrs old i had a diy cage in which i raised white and brown doves, brings me back to a simpler time :) thank you for the awesome content.
I JUST found your channel and I am in AWE of your precious family and what you do on your farm. I am using some of your videos to help in my homeschooling.. As well as important "care" lessons for my pre school child. To teach my children that ALL things are a gift from God and the life of these animals have a purpose and deserve love and care and protection. Real life!! I appreciate your honesty and allowing us to see the TRUTH of farming and the responsibility that is so important. Thank you for sharing your journey and allowing not only me but my children to learn such precious and important life lessons they wouldn't otherwise be able to see. Its so important they see and not just read about life and GREAT responsibility that is NECESSARY of others including animals. Learning there is the gift of life and reality of death.. I know it's sucks to know I have to go out in ten minutes to recheck our birds. luckily I just bought new base layer clothes made for frigid temps since I have to wait for buses to get to work.
No offense, but no one outside of Canada really knows or cares to differentiate Canadian provinces. But that's normal. If I were to ask you "What's south of Texas?", what would your response be? If your response was "Mexico" instead of Chihuahua or Coahuila, then you're being a hypocrite. (And yes, I absolutely had to look those up, because just like Canada, who the hell outside Mexico knows/cares about Mexican states?) The only reason the rest of the world has any idea about a few of the American states is due to the US's media presence, Hollywood especially. But even most Americans couldn't point out Nebraska on an unlabeled state map. "It's one of those states in the middle" will be your average answer for anyone not living in a state bordering Nebraska. TL;DR- To non-Canadians, Canada really is just... Canada.

You will need a pickaxe for the cows water when it freezes this much. And a little generator for dolls barn is a good idea. When the solar panels won't work that day you have a plan b. Great 😊 And wow how long I watched your channel... 3 years or so. Bamboo is so cute. I remember his sock diapers. The time flies by like it is nothing. I'm not old but I feel like it when the time flies like that 😂

I think you're a little mixed up. The thing that goes on the cow's head is a halter not a harness. A harness goes on the body of a horse that is pulling a cart or wagon. Dogs often wear them for walking (I don't know why.)
harnesses are ESSENTIAL for dogs that pull so they don't choke themselves. they should get trained out of it but better safe than sorry-- when my dog was young she jumped off of a marsh bridge once and couldn't get back up, we had to pull her out by the harness lol

Tip for frozen water tanks. Use a hatchet to brake up the ice in larger chunks, it makes it easier to chop the ice and to remove the ice once it’s broken up

You can buy trough heaters for ur big tanks and heated buckets for smaller animals but i don't know what you could do for all the birds(other than the emus). You can em at tractor supply and other similar stores
Agreed we started with two black silkies and 10 California White Hens. Like everything we last two within the first couple of days. It has been a week later for the chicks. We have been inspired by your farm life and going to give it a try.
We’ve just hatched our VERY first chick 🐣 it was like magic! We also have snow here in the UK and everything is frozen solid! Just getting water for the horses etc is a NIGHTMARE!!! Love your videos and we can’t wait to hatch more eggs 👍

I feel your pain, just this morning - 8 low and - 26 windchill here in southeast Minnesota. My feral cats haven't showed up in 2 days, staying hunkered down.
Minnesota being living the dream with winter being here 😫 we have been getting -20 to -40 below Fahrenheit just this week only. And planning to get even more snow this upcoming week with very low temps 🥶🥶 and with my chickens laying still in these colds temps is just crazy only thing i got to worry about is frostbite for one of my hens since she has a bigger comb than the other 2. Glad spring is almost here!!

We are currently staying in France. We look after two sheep and 5 chickens so we have to empty out their frozen water each morning but it's nothing compared to how much you guys have to do daily to care for all your animals 😅

I think we all are fed up with frozen water! A simple solution we have found is emptying the water pans after the birds have gone to bed. They won't need it, their sleeping and it saves you from having to break solid ice during morning chores

They’re really heavy to haul back and forth. Hopefully using the generator until it warms back up will get them back to normal.

I think you're a little mixed up. The thing that goes on the cow's head is a halter not a harness. A harness goes on the body of a horse that is pulling a cart or wagon. Dogs often wear them for walking (I don't know why.)
harnesses are ESSENTIAL for dogs that pull so they don't choke themselves. they should get trained out of it but better safe than sorry-- when my dog was young she jumped off of a marsh bridge once and couldn't get back up, we had to pull her out by the harness lol

Tip for frozen water tanks. Use a hatchet to brake up the ice in larger chunks, it makes it easier to chop the ice and to remove the ice once it’s broken up

You can buy trough heaters for ur big tanks and heated buckets for smaller animals but i don't know what you could do for all the birds(other than the emus). You can em at tractor supply and other similar stores

I feel your pain, just this morning - 8 low and - 26 windchill here in southeast Minnesota. My feral cats haven't showed up in 2 days, staying hunkered down.
Minnesota being living the dream with winter being here 😫 we have been getting -20 to -40 below Fahrenheit just this week only. And planning to get even more snow this upcoming week with very low temps 🥶🥶 and with my chickens laying still in these colds temps is just crazy only thing i got to worry about is frostbite for one of my hens since she has a bigger comb than the other 2. Glad spring is almost here!!

We see you guys and you encourage us. In our area in Greece it is rarely cold and in the last days when the temperature dropped below zero we have panicked
We are currently staying in France. We look after two sheep and 5 chickens so we have to empty out their frozen water each morning but it's nothing compared to how much you guys have to do daily to care for all your animals 😅
If you fill a plastic bottle with 1/4 salt, 1/2 (cooled) boiled water and 1/4 air and you put it in de waterbuckets, the bottle will keep moving and will prevent de water from freezing 🙂

I think we all are fed up with frozen water! A simple solution we have found is emptying the water pans after the birds have gone to bed. They won't need it, their sleeping and it saves you from having to break solid ice during morning chores
