I'm a new yoga teacher, I will have been teaching for 2 years this November, and have bumped into all of what you have said. I just wanted to share. This past weekend I was at an open house for my YTT school for there upcoming 200 hour class. In talking, I mentioned how once I said I had to "work" the next morning when I had a class. as soon as that word came out of my mouth I recoiled at how it felt, corrected myself, and I said I have to "teach" tomorrow. My two instructors corrected me and said I "You 'get' to teach the next day", and that sounded so right. Teaching is such a joy and privilege! I so enjoy and learn constantly from your videos and newsletters! Thank you!
Thank you, Brea. I struggle with these feelings and this message is so helpful. I also feel (and maybe you could share your thoughts and feelings on this) that the yoga teacher community can be so hard on each other. Judging other "styles" of yoga, labeling other teachers as not "good" teachers, not knowing enough, having egos, and so on. I've experienced this in so many various studios and health clubs I've been a part of. This is also so quickly reflected in participants, where they then spread the word that you are not a "good" teacher because (for example), your class isn't full, you didn't do a 10 day retreat in Costo Rico, you teach with props, your class is "easy" so you're not "good", you don't teach "big" poses like arm balances so you're not as "good" as _____ over there that can do 25 Sun Salutations. I love to teach about anatomy is class and less about the energetics or chakras. I have been quickly labeled as a "fitness" yoga teacher vs. a "real" yoga teacher - whatever that means LOL!
Thank you for this message, it is so authentic and personal to you yet it’s as though you’ve hit a personal pain point in me. It’s such a relief to know it’s not just me that’s experiencing these things. I felt a freedom as I sat listening to your words so thank you again
Wow what a Beautiful message ❤I qualified in my 200 hours yoga teacher training - about 5 years ago and I have still not taken the leap to teach - even though I know it is my Souls Mission - ❤
Thank you for these encouraging reminders! I have been teaching since 2004 but had a 2 & 1/2 year hiatus due to the pandemic & just started teaching again. I have been feeling more nervous/excited before each class & less confident in my returning skills & knowledge.
Aw, so glad that this resonated with you and made you feel much better! If you want more, I have a whole podcast full of supportive yoga teacher talks like this. Check out The Move With Love Podcast www.heartandbonesyoga.com/learning/podcasts/
Many Thanks for your valuable, thoughtful and well presented content. Would you have a book tip for me? I am a Yoga Teacher (500h) and I have about 1 year experience teaching (15 years practicing experience). I find sequencing the hardest. Although I know the basics well. I also have been a professional Contemporary dancer. That holds me back more than I thought as I always feel in dance many more moves are allowed as in Yoga and Yoga is not dance. I mean, I'd love to sequence in my personal style. But then I feel I need to adjust and look at other great Teachers or books to make sure I don't make mistakes. I would love though to get to a stage where I simply know what I know confidently and create wonderful sequences. Are there any books out there, that you'd recommend (besides he famous Mark Stephens books).
it always takes me by surprise to hear how common imposter syndrome is. it's such an isolating feeling that i'm SURE i'm the only one (even though it's obviously not true 🙄🙄😁😁) thanks so much for your reassurance, brea!!
It's SO common! And you're right, the imposter syndrome is so tricky that it makes you think you're the only one thinking that way when it's totally not true :)
Brea, that was so beautiful and inspiring! Good advice not just for teaching yoga but for life in general. It was just what I needed to hear today. We are all just doing the best we can with the knowledge and tools that we have right now in this moment 🙏💙

I love your mindset, very refreshing! I totally agree about mistakes and like to call them "must-take" 😉
