As an older reader, what's been awesome about dandadan is how real the romance is. There's been quite a few times momo and okarun's development reminded me of a certain point in my love life. Maybe it's a little too deep looking into this. But the romance seems to have a huge theme on believing in yourself, believing that you're worthy enough for love. And believing it like you believe in, say, ghosts and aliens. ? (Haha)

It's like the less he gets in his head and the more he's motivated towards self improvement (and for the right reasons). So much about his appeal just falls into place. What i like a lot is that momo's friends support her relationship with okarun instead of moking her for liking him, i mean, they know he is a sweet boy that will take care of her but they know that he is a weirdo aswell

Dude this is the best Momo/Okarun video I've ever seen. You completely nailed it! I also love how modern stories have moved from love triangles to romantic rivals. There's always one very clear ship and characters like Jiji, Aira, Zuma and Vamola are used expose the flaws of their respective romantic rivals. One of my favorite details of this is with Aira and Momo. Aira lies basically all the time, her entire public persona is an act. However, when it comes to Okarun, she is extremely honest about her attraction to him. Meanwhile, Momo is usually a very honest and forthright person-- but struggles to convey her true feelings to Okarun at every point.
Ooh! I never thought about that! I guess this is part of what causes such friction between them at the start (and still now, but they're friends) because Momo and Aira are seemingly opposite. As someone who has been reading the manga for a few years now, it's been such a cool experience to see how the anime is blowing up and how much people are loving it. Seeing analytical videos like this is super cool. I also really like the point made about how both Okarun and Momo has very specific types they were interested in at the start of the series and even though they've since actually MET those exact people, they basically didn't even notice because they so clearly clicked with each other. I didn't notice that upon my initial read through, but it commented on somewhere a while back and thought it was a really cool note.

I watched this before work yesterday and had so many thoughts about it that I had to listen to it again on the way home, and now I'm back for round 3. I've been reading Dandadan for about a year now and you perfectly articulated the feelings it gave me that I didn't know quite how to express. As I read through the story I started realizing that I've never found a relationship that I needed to happen more than Ken and Momo, almost like their own doubts and feelings they had to overcome were the same that I've failed to overcome before. I suppose that's the intention, and probably why it's probably the most emotionally genuine and compelling relationship I've ever seen depicted. Looking at those Manga panels while you elaborate on them made me understand why they would make me feel so much while I read them the first time. Those feelings are so natural yet so complicated and I think you did an incredible job at describing why they felt like that. Please do more Dandadan, you really do seem to 'get it' in a way so few other people do

Because their relationship feels so good and feels so like a normal teenage relationship there is a fear in me that the author might write them at some point to break up
If Mr. Tatsu decided that the whole Team Dan Da Dan survived the attempt of Kur invasion with almost zero trauma, I think Momokarun can survive as well. Dan Da Dan is not SNK, ChM or Netflix's Sex Education. DDDan is lighthearted even though it touches the surface of Hell, and I think Mr. Tatsu will go full with the _Power of Love_ trope saving the whole Galaxy.
I rewatched the anime maybe about 10x and when I couldn't get enough of that, I also sat down and read the entire manga in one sitting. So yeah, now I, too, am in that special hell where I have to wait for new episodes AND new chapters. But I just couldn't put it down. This series has become my first new hyperfixation in a looong time. It has everything I've been wanting to see in a Shonen for years.
This series has singlehandedly brought me back into my anime arc haha Honestly though, I am so excited for the next Mondanday to come around so we can get more weekly peak fiction. Thanks so much for your viewership!! :))

I think dandadan had set the standard for what a proper and well done anime/manga romance should be, it's definitely broken the tired old tropes and conventions of mediocre and poor paced romantic subplots that plague so many Shonens.(Looking at you MHA/Naruto)
I had intended on adding some examples of this in the video! But I didn't want to stray too far from the focus of Momo and Okarun. Totally agreed tho, so much shonen romance is simply not very well written haha - whereas this romance is the entire soul of the story Thank you for your viewership!! :))

I'm currently only an anime viewer so stopping, thanks for the warning. But yes I love the way they give her such depth, but without making their tensions drag out unnecessarily. The characters have unique designs (my biggest critique at this time being that Aira looks so similar to Momo while all the other characters, even just the friends, are really distinctly designed, but eh) and personalities. I've never really had the time to sit and watch much anime since I was younger, and most of the time, I get annoyed or bored of them when I do try because of much of what you talked about. I think back to watching Soul Eater when I was younger and how even then I had to sort of force myself through it because of the way they treated female characters, even though relatively better than a lot of anime at that time. But save for the pilot episode abduction deal (which could understandably drive someone away right off the bat, myself almost), they don't try to tote the line of fanservice from young and minor age characters from that point which has been so freaking refreshing. Having pushed through the discomfort of the abduction scene, I can look back at the scene with a little more nuance. I'm still critical of it, but can also value the visual storytelling that scene provided. It sets you up to understand how that species thinks and doesn't have any sort of human empathy, and lets you know what is at risk for the characters when certain aliens are present, as they weren't going to take into account who is a minor or not, just whether you've got mature reproductive organs.
Oh, also, I feel it adds some value to Okarun's view of Momo, as well. It's several chapters in before he even considers the concept of Momo's attractiveness, and he's already seen her in the bare necessities. They easily could have turned that into a joke in that moment, but they focused entirely on Okarun's concern for Momo, which I think itself calls back to the OG scene. Some anime even would have had the character comment on the girl being hot even in the middle or right after such an intense moment, but both during the abduction and in this lower-stakes interaction, Okarun's concern is Momo's safety and reputation -- that people respect her. So yeah rant over haha
as a high schooler desperately looking for love in all the wrong places, LEMME HAVE THEIR LOVE I WANT THAT PLEAAASSSEEE Edit: after finishing the video I just wanted to say that this is my favorite piece of anything I have ever consumed and I will cry if there is a single week where a new chapter dosent drop (jokes but I will be sad)

Legitimately the best breakdown I’ve ever seen of the characters’ relationship, and putting it in far better words than I ever could. I’ve discovered long ago that, while I’m almost exclusively a shonen reader, it’s the romance subplots that engross me the most (maybe I should just cut the middle man and read some shoujo 😅). It’s what makes me go back and reread chapters, every time something cutesy happens. And Dandadan has my brain on a chokehold since I’ve started reading it a couple of months ago, specifically because of these 2 goobers. I’m very curious to see how the series advances their relationship, as while I can count on one hand the number of times I was satisfied with a romance in a shonen, I can’t think of a single example of when a story actually develops WHILE the characters are already dating. And I hope that the story goes there, for there can still be a lot of conflict and obstacles even after they confess to each other. Trying not to keep my hopes too high, but it’s a bit hard when the series already surpasses a lot of what I expect from a weekly shonen. Anyways, sorry for the long ass comment lol. Yeah I was more so referring to relationships in shonen, and I imagine shojo and slice-of-life delves more properly into these aspects. I relate to Okarun so much, when I was younger where a girl I liked, or any friend I'm really close to meets up with their other friends who I didn't know yet, my self esteem plumets and felt I'm not needed or not important to the interaction so I just keeo silent in the back, or go away.

Normally im not a fan of romance in shonen series cause they usually kinda teeter around it without ever making any meaningful progress on it besides maybe a few scenes with the characters blushing or looking nervous, or its just used as a gag to make a character a hopeless romantic or a horn dog. But dandadan has done an amazing job of making the romance feel real and meaningful, and yeah it has awkward moments and sometimes its a bit agitating reading the series and wanting them to just hurry up with it (havent caught up all the way with the manga, on chapter 130 or 140 something i think) but that can be excused and kinda adds to it considering theyre still teenagers trying to understand the feelings themselves.
Same here man, totally agreed! I guess so much of these romances are just tacked on as an excuse to get shippers on board. But this show really shows that you can make an incredible, heartful romance at the core of badass action. Thank you for your comment and viewership!! :))
This video feels so short when you're engrossed in the story and dynamic of the two, I also ended up reading the entirely of the manga in one sitting, I loved the script and editing of this ! Personally, Okarun reminds me so much of my LDR. My boyfriend reminds me so much of him, especially his insecurities about himself or his self worth in general That's what made the writing feel so raw to me, after reading so much shoujo and romance, this series scratches a specific nerve I never knew I had,, it just feels so genuine !!! I'm glad that every character with feelings towards the two are used to strengthen the main relationship. It makes me so happy and fuzzy knowing that not even an alien lives up to ken's expectations compared to momo I'm there every Monday and Thursday, utterly obsessed with this manga,, definitely a top favourite one for me.. ｡ﾟ(TヮT)

With the popularity of the series it has become hard tracking down volumes and I had to some really heavy duty searching online to find legit copies. I finally was able to score the last couple of volumes I needed by find some independent book store in rural Oregon . Emailed the owner, verified these were not bootlegs and swiped them up. Sucks that I had to read Volume 10 onwards digitally. But I will just read through them again when my physical copies arrive as they release.

I watched this before work yesterday and had so many thoughts about it that I had to listen to it again on the way home, and now I'm back for round 3. I've been reading Dandadan for about a year now and you perfectly articulated the feelings it gave me that I didn't know quite how to express. As I read through the story I started realizing that I've never found a relationship that I needed to happen more than Ken and Momo, almost like their own doubts and feelings they had to overcome were the same that I've failed to overcome before. I suppose that's the intention, and probably why it's probably the most emotionally genuine and compelling relationship I've ever seen depicted. Looking at those Manga panels while you elaborate on them made me understand why they would make me feel so much while I read them the first time. Those feelings are so natural yet so complicated and I think you did an incredible job at describing why they felt like that. Please do more Dandadan, you really do seem to 'get it' in a way so few other people do

If Mr. Tatsu decided that the whole Team Dan Da Dan survived the attempt of Kur invasion with almost zero trauma, I think Momokarun can survive as well. Dan Da Dan is not SNK, ChM or Netflix's Sex Education. DDDan is lighthearted even though it touches the surface of Hell, and I think Mr. Tatsu will go full with the _Power of Love_ trope saving the whole Galaxy.
I rewatched the anime maybe about 10x and when I couldn't get enough of that, I also sat down and read the entire manga in one sitting.
So yeah, now I, too, am in that special hell where I have to wait for new episodes AND new chapters. But I just couldn't put it down. This series has become my first new hyperfixation in a looong time. It has everything I've been wanting to see in a Shonen for years.
This series has singlehandedly brought me back into my anime arc haha
Honestly though, I am so excited for the next Mondanday to come around so we can get more weekly peak fiction.

I think dandadan had set the standard for what a proper and well done anime/manga romance should be, it's definitely broken the tired old tropes and conventions of mediocre and poor paced romantic subplots that plague so many Shonens.(Looking at you MHA/Naruto)
I had intended on adding some examples of this in the video! But I didn't want to stray too far from the focus of Momo and Okarun.
Totally agreed tho, so much shonen romance is simply not very well written haha - whereas this romance is the entire soul of the story

I'm currently only an anime viewer so stopping, thanks for the warning. But yes I love the way they give her such depth, but without making their tensions drag out unnecessarily. The characters have unique designs (my biggest critique at this time being that Aira looks so similar to Momo while all the other characters, even just the friends, are really distinctly designed, but eh) and personalities. I've never really had the time to sit and watch much anime since I was younger, and most of the time, I get annoyed or bored of them when I do try because of much of what you talked about. I think back to watching Soul Eater when I was younger and how even then I had to sort of force myself through it because of the way they treated female characters, even though relatively better than a lot of anime at that time. But save for the pilot episode abduction deal (which could understandably drive someone away right off the bat, myself almost), they don't try to tote the line of fanservice from young and minor age characters from that point which has been so freaking refreshing. Having pushed through the discomfort of the abduction scene, I can look back at the scene with a little more nuance. I'm still critical of it, but can also value the visual storytelling that scene provided. It sets you up to understand how that species thinks and doesn't have any sort of human empathy, and lets you know what is at risk for the characters when certain aliens are present, as they weren't going to take into account who is a minor or not, just whether you've got mature reproductive organs.
Oh, also, I feel it adds some value to Okarun's view of Momo, as well. It's several chapters in before he even considers the concept of Momo's attractiveness, and he's already seen her in the bare necessities. They easily could have turned that into a joke in that moment, but they focused entirely on Okarun's concern for Momo, which I think itself calls back to the OG scene. Some anime even would have had the character comment on the girl being hot even in the middle or right after such an intense moment, but both during the abduction and in this lower-stakes interaction, Okarun's concern is Momo's safety and reputation -- that people respect her. So yeah rant over haha
Now we gotta wait 3 weeks in the manga 😭

Legitimately the best breakdown I’ve ever seen of the characters’ relationship, and putting it in far better words than I ever could.
I’ve discovered long ago that, while I’m almost exclusively a shonen reader, it’s the romance subplots that engross me the most (maybe I should just cut the middle man and read some shoujo 😅). It’s what makes me go back and reread chapters, every time something cutesy happens. And Dandadan has my brain on a chokehold since I’ve started reading it a couple of months ago, specifically because of these 2 goobers.
I’m very curious to see how the series advances their relationship, as while I can count on one hand the number of times I was satisfied with a romance in a shonen, I can’t think of a single example of when a story actually develops WHILE the characters are already dating. And I hope that the story goes there, for there can still be a lot of conflict and obstacles even after they confess to each other. Trying not to keep my hopes too high, but it’s a bit hard when the series already surpasses a lot of what I expect from a weekly shonen.

On the chance you'd be interested regarding stories that develop after dating starts, Komi Can't Communicate is one such manga (it's not a action manga but it is classed as shonen), though to say more would mean spoilers. Kaguya sama Love is War is another.

Yeah I was more so referring to relationships in shonen, and I imagine shojo and slice-of-life delves more properly into these aspects. I relate to Okarun so much, when I was younger where a girl I liked, or any friend I'm really close to meets up with their other friends who I didn't know yet, my self esteem plumets and felt I'm not needed or not important to the interaction so I just keeo silent in the back, or go away.

Normally im not a fan of romance in shonen series cause they usually kinda teeter around it without ever making any meaningful progress on it besides maybe a few scenes with the characters blushing or looking nervous, or its just used as a gag to make a character a hopeless romantic or a horn dog.
But dandadan has done an amazing job of making the romance feel real and meaningful, and yeah it has awkward moments and sometimes its a bit agitating reading the series and wanting them to just hurry up with it (havent caught up all the way with the manga, on chapter 130 or 140 something i think) but that can be excused and kinda adds to it considering theyre still teenagers trying to understand the feelings themselves.
Same here man, totally agreed! I guess so much of these romances are just tacked on as an excuse to get shippers on board.
But this show really shows that you can make an incredible, heartful romance at the core of badass action.

@@safetysonrookie Here's the thing, I cannot stand reading digitally. I have to have the book in my hands and feel myself turning the pages. With the popularity of the series it has become hard tracking down volumes and I had to some really heavy duty searching online to find legit copies. I finally was able to score the last couple of volumes I needed by find some independent book store in rural Oregon . Emailed the owner, verified these were not bootlegs and swiped them up. Sucks that I had to read Volume 10 onwards digitally. But I will just read through them again when my physical copies arrive as they release.
