I love the way everyone is smiling at the end after the scorpion is finally killed, with the love interest couple joking and embracing, while they have just seen dozens of soldiers die horribly, with the carnage strewn all around them, bodies and all.

The scene where the soldier gets electrocuted was a great touch! It caught me off guard decades ago yet no one seems to comment on it when discussing this film! Great stop motion photography!

I asked to watch this back in 1969 when I was 9 ,after I did well in a school, exam . It was at 9pm on ITV in the uk. I had nightmares for a few days and kept going to the rest room .
This film scared the living c**p out of me
I bought the dvd last year and the battle scenes are some of the best ever in monster movies
    Classic !

This was when sci-fi movies showed incredible feats of animation talents! The awesome image of these magnified creatures moving around on the screen is still impressive after many years, and some of the most spectacular magic ever created for theatrical entertainment!!!

This film is so underrated. The stop motion is actually pretty good. The only bad points about it would be the mock-up head used for the close-ups and the pretty bad silhouette of the creature walking about the city.

Honestly, I almost prefer these stop motion monsters. They have a certain tactility and surreality to them that CG can't quite match.

I think cgi goes with monsters the best since they can move freely with no weird stiff movement or some places of their body hey can’t move. But dang this stop motion in this is good for it’s time

I always loved the shock value when the soldier grabs the electrified lance, not realizing that the power is still on! 2:03 My buddies and I used to crack up at the "TURN IT OFF!!" once the poor mope got fried!! Imagine what the US Army would throw at the big scorpion today!

How Warner Brothers did such a good job on a *_KAIJU MOVIE OF ALL THINGS_* is beyond even me. The MST3K riffing of this movie is pretty incredible too, and it was how I was introduced to the film.

There are some very exciting animated sequences in this film and of course it's worth checking out to see more of master animator Willis O'Brien (who had an assistant on this film and unfortunately, I can't recall his name at this moment). The "underground" battle is definitely a major clue as to what the infamous "spider pit" sequence in "Kong Kong" may have resembled. I do know they ran out of money for the animation effects (mostly accomplished by O'Brien and his assistant in a garage!) hence that (awful) over-reliance on the prop monster head and a scene where the scorpion is only a black matte on screen--you'd think Warner Bros., who may have only distributed this film, could have at least thrown in a few more dollars to fix those problems!

    • @GlitchanBlack

A real 'Monster Movie' with impressive effects for the time. With Godzilla and King Kong doing reasonably at the Box Office it might be time for a remake with some decent CGI though it will probably be by Asylum Pictures for the SY FY channel.
