I remember watching a show on tv years back about a man that walked down some of the busiest streets in New York, using his eyes and just like you, a brush and small dust pan. People thought he was crazy and just wasting his time. Little did they know of the diamonds and precious metals he found between cracks of the concrete walkways. People are so busy talking on cell phones and never bother to look down on the ground. They could easily walk over a $100 dollar bill and not notice. I find myself looking down more often as kind of a habit with metal detecting, so nothing gets past me. Don't worry about what others think. Some have probably thought about it, but are too embarrassed to try it. Anyways, great videos.H.H.👍

The round clear balls are probably glass beads used on roadway painting. Applied to the wet paint immediately after application. They produce a somewhat reflective surface, by reflecting light back to source from any direction. Seems plausible some of the beads make it over the curb up onto the sidewalk.

City storm system workers report finding lots of valuable items in the bottoms of the storm drain catch basins. You know the grates where the water in the gutters drains into. Each one has a sump under the pipe flow elevation where the heavies settle out. Need to clean out a couple catch basins in front of the diamond district. Cities are notorious for not maintaining them, they are usually full to at least the pipe flow line if not up to the grate on top. Wet dry shop vac with extension???

The little glass balls are from reflective road paint - after painting new lines and words on streets, the road crews throw handfuls of these little glass balls into the wet paint, making the lines and words brighter at night. The excess glass balls that do not stick in the paint go everywhere - non-toxic, break down into sand over time. My best friend did this job (signage crew) for CalTrans in the summers during his college years.

Hey, KG! Glass beads are used to sandblast surfaces, too. The bead diameters range in size from .04 mm or finer up to 1.5 mm. It's possible they were used to clean the sidewalk or graffiti off walls in the past. Or street painters could have spilled some glass when mixing up some paint, but I'm not sure they would do that on site.

I found a pocket watch! My foreman said he found a diamond ring in a sewer pipe one time. The pocket watch was a fake one, but it got me thinking! I haven't read all the replies to answer the question about the glass beads, I do parking lot maintenence mostly painting lines and stencils, usually the city will do the roads and crosswalks, but in hi wears areas like crosswalks they put thermoplastic down (melted plastic) while in melted state they take a hand full of glass beads and sprinkle it over the top , this makes the thermo reflective when car headlights hit it. the excess gets washed away with cars and rain etc.. next time you are walking at a crosswalk look close and you will see glass beads embedded in the thermo (if its thermo).. but thats all it is , i would expect they are everywhere including in the storm drains etc...
