This is more than a minor correction, the segment introducing the missle has a new animation set and a new explanation of how mutually assured destruction was achieved. The original video only mentioned the minutemen's ability to respond. This corrected video points out that the trident missle's were another fallback layer, to be used in the instance of a first strike that disabled the minutemen. This video is more than a correction, it is an improved explanation of the context that Tekoi existed in.

    Awesome, just awesome video!
As someone who blundered into an abandoned nuclear munitions site when exploring as a kid, I can relate to the excitement and the later realization of possible dangers that might have caught me without warning. I was horryfied when 15 year-old me finally understood I was standing where a couple of years ago a big pile of nuclear bombs had been stored. Having limited knowledge of those things I left ASAP out of fear of radiation or dangerous chemicals. Only 10 years later I realized there was no danger.
Still it gives me goosebumps to think what would have happened in case of WW3 - those nuclear munitions were 155mm artillery rounds for guns stationed about 5km away from my home. Their range was about 25-35km, and the strategy of that time had them planned for almost immediate use. So I would have felt that, if I had survived at all.
    Greetings from Germany

My great-grandmother lived in Kenvil NJ, in the 1940s, when the Hercules Powder plant there blew up. She said it was the scariest thing she'd ever lived through. There were 3 explosions at that plant, one in 1934, 1940, and 1989. They still don't know if that explosion (1940) was an accident, or deliberately done by the Nazis or the IRA.

There’s some eerie and beautiful about Tekoi. It’s got a Chernobyl quality to it but it’s also so small and humble for the elaborate work it was doing. I love the empty filing cabinets with the folders still inside. It would be great if someone turned it into a museum. Modern history is truly fascinating especially the aerospace stuff. There’s this great aircraft museum outside Salem that’s easily one of my favorite places on earth. The number of pieces they have is staggering including the worlds largest plane. They have an excellent early spacecraft exhibit and their ICBM exhibit is so cool it’s like traversing into an actual bunker.

the west desert is such a pretty place, especially at the time of year grey visited. I had to do some saline extraction research which meant I spent a lot of time around the very south end of the promontory so I could access both sides of the lake. It's a surreal 360 vista: absolute wilderness, a huge continuous urban area against the wasatch, rocket test facilities, the railroad causeways and how they split the dead sea to the horizon, and the furnaces to kennecott. I live near these silos! Or at least what remains of them.
Most farmers simply use them as “parking lots” for tractors and farm equipment now.
But you can always tell them by the fenced off areas.
There’s even a few places with unused radar bases left!
At least… I think most of them were taken o and concreted over…

    Corrections I've noticed so far:
    1:59 New graphic
    2:00 - 2:40 Animation & New explanation
    3:09 - 3:13 New animation
    6:37 - 6:57 New ending.
I think some jokes might have been removed from the original script, but I can't put my finger on it.

It doesn't matter how smart you are, how thorough you intend to be, there's usually always someone that knows a little more about a subject your researching than you do, and honestly It's not always about how well you can avoid mistakes but how well you can respond to them when they inevitably come up.

ATK actually didn't buy the company that made the SS SRBs, Morton Thiokol, until the latter end of the program. I only point it out because of the politics behind Thiokol and the Challenger disaster. One of the engineers on the boosters, Al McDonald, has an excellent book on the topic.

Fun facts: There were 24 Ohio class commissioned 18 were built, 4 were then converted to launching the humble tomahawk. Leaving 14 of which were limited from 24 missiles to 20 then to 16(I think). This was because of START, then maybe New START which I don't know if it ever came to be.
Fun Fact 2: The British nuclear submarines also launch Trident II D5 Missiles and made bombs which are technically on "lease". I wonder what would happen if the UK accidentally "loses" them. They were planning on 6, built just 4. Which could launch 16 missiles but were limited to 12 also a part of START.

I really appreciate Grey's dedication to correcting his mistakes, even if it may be at the cost of viewer engagement. This is certainly the most accessible source to learn about Tekoi, something I didn't even know existed until his exploration vlog, and I'm glad that he remade this video for the sake of accuracy. It's a very selfless thing to do to be honest, he could have just made an apology video and kept the factually incorrect video up, but that would have risked so many viewers believing false information. It truly shows that he's willing to admitting his mistakes because he understands that this topic is bigger than his ego.

Neighboring the town of Hercules is Pinole, CA. Pinole was home to the Giant Powder Company, another dynamite manufacturer. Rumor has it explosions were so common that the company planted groves of eucalyptus trees to buffer the sound from the surrounding residential communities. Giant was eventually acquired by Atlas and continued to produce explosives at the site into the 1960s. Today the area is a public park, albeit one with a curiously high concentration of eucalyptus trees.

    • @coolfer2
      @coolfer2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@civil1 Idk if it's intentional, but the word "safely" is really significant for me, because with this threat of mutual destruction, starting from the cold war era, the world does indeed become "relatively" safer, because the mutual destruction threat actually makes the worlds major powers (nations with the ability to basically fuck up the entire planet) very reluctant to attack each other. Just like Mark Twain said, "Si vis pacem, para bellum".
