    I disappear is a weird one, Jason's last song with the band having a line that goes "do you bury me when I'm gone, do you teach me while I'm here, just as soon as I belong now it's time I disappear" is quite poetic, similar in sense to Pantera's last true song being "I'll Cast A Shadow (when I die)".
    It signified the end of an era...
    I always wonder where they would have gone had Jason stayed in the band, granted they had they given him the freedom to do the side-projects, and had refrained from touring to fight addictions and get rehab as Jason suggested (Jason's addiction being to painkillers after surgery)
    I think we would've gotten more "I Disappear, - Human, and or No Leaf Clover style songs... like a hybrid of the Load style with the heavier stuff on The Black Album.
    It's interesting, and a shame we'll never know

      @@1997LT1Camaro yeah Jason was the heart of the band, he gave his all every single time he went up there to work. You could see how frustrated he was in 99-00 as well (in both fan and pro-shot videos) where he'd shove camera guys, yell at the roadies, all of which was abnormal for him based on what people say. Probably the painkillers though tbh

      @@1997LT1Camaro they simply just didn't like him or his style of playing not to mention all of their own addictions and family problems and trauma especially the cliff accident. It was just never meant to be and once Jason left it was good for them a new start and they were all getting cleaned up as well. i’m glad you finally covered i disappear topic! there’s something so catchy about that song, that it makes it my favorite metallica’s song ever.. i disappear is just on point. maybe it’s because it’s such a standalone in their career, maybe because of that simpliness, which proves that easy structure can still make a heavy piece of the song.. and man, the live versions from the year 2000 prove that it’s a real masterpiece (man james really gave all the energy to the „i’m gone” part..) i love this song so much, it’s never ever gonna bore me. although, i’m kinda sad for two things associated with this track: 1. that they haven’t used that napster leaked version as a final one (the choice to flip the soft and hard part was clever af but that leaked version sounded more polished) 2. that it’s the evidence of the new era, sound and record that we’re never going to hear since the presidio recordings were dumped (i hope they release them someday on possible st. anger deluxe set :() cheers man and thank you for that video once again

    Love this song. When it came out I was excited for similar sounding songs on their next album, but instead we got St Anger.
    As for would St Anger have happened if Jason didn't leave? There's so many different things that could've happened, so many timelines, but in my opinion, St Anger wouldn't have happened. James wouldn't have gone to rehab and gotten help because Jason didn't leave, Jason would've grown more resentful, James would've kept drinking, the band would've imploded and not released anything else and maybe even James drank himself to death or at least ruined his body so he couldn't tour anymore.
    I hate that Jason left, his stage presence was amazing and back up vocals and sometimes lead vocals is surely missed, but I think it had to happen for James to realise he needed help and for the band to reset itself.

    As for the very last point, I have always wondered for years what the alternate reality might have been considering what Jason asked for and what ended up happening. We've all seen the initial interviews. He asked for a year to do Echo Brain, Lars and James were not willing to take that time off from the band. They wanted to get in the studio and make an album, but with James ultimately going to rehab for 9+ months and the bulk of the St. Anger writing/recording not occurring until after that, who know what would have happened if James and Lars had this perspective at the time when Jason first requested in 2000 what would have happened.

    This was the song (and its video) that got me into Metallica. Simple as that. So it's quite special to me and lots of memories come along with it. Anyway I agree with the foreshadowing of the St. Anger sound but I can't hide I find it also too polished in a way that it had to adhere to a mainstream movie soundtrack's standards and thus it sounds almost like a pop-rock tune to me. You can tell it by the phasing effects during the instrumental breaks and the slight fade-ins before those rests that come immediately after them.
    It doesn't have the appeal of the classics but it's a peculiar song for sure.

    "Would St. Anger have happened if Jason stayed with Metallica" is an interesting question.
    There probably would have been an album made if Jason had stayed.
    But what we got as St. Anger was born out of a lot of things, like the James going to rehab and the lack of time the band had to complete the album.
    But Jason staying would have changed the dynamic of the "band therapy" that they also went through. Jason should have been a part of that but from the few interviews I saw, did not seem like he would have approached that with the same open mind as the other members did. Apart from some of the James/Lars dynamic, Jason and his role in the band would have benefited from that therapy. He might have eventually gotten what he wanted had he stayed, and increased role or at least allowed to express himself outside of Metallica.
    Or he could have been completely closed off to the therapy, and that eventually splits the band, and there's no album ever made. Really hard to say.

    • @lewisgrant7622

      St anger was basically born out of the frustration of Jason leaving and the animosity between James and lars of just 20 years of straight up rage & anger just being released. Which 1. Almost tore the band apart and of course as you mentioned James checking himself into rehab. Which is ironic cause when Metallica kicked Dave out of the band. That sent Dave in a direction of alcohol and drugs which actually briefly killed him till they brought him back to life and it took him multiple trips to rehab to eventually clean himself and this was exactly what James going through just not as drastic.

    If I remember correctly, didn't Metallica worked an album in like 1999-2000, and then someone broke into their studio and stole the computer that had everything on it? Then James later said that it wasn't a major loss as they weren't entirely happy with how the recording was going with it?

      @@NoxWyatt Yeah it’s pretty obvious they were written with the orchestra in mind and I’m not a load and reload fan but maybe an album in between with songs like Minus Human ? I know there’s a whole generation nearly that Load and Reload was “their” first Metallica albums and some people love everything they did. I got into metal via the Black Album and I’m in the love everything up to and including the Black Album and think Death Magnetic is better than anything since the black album until today, never really got into the last couple albums.

    It's an interesting question whether Jason or Bob Rock played bass on the final version. He wasn't available during pre-production, and I'm wondering if that was the first major crack in the band. Here's the quote from Bob Rock: "When we did the 'Mission Impossible' song 'I Disappear' [in 2000], Jason [Newsted, bass] didn't show up to pre-production, so I played bass just so we can rehearse and get it.
    "So, when Jason - whatever happened, that happened - they said, 'We can't get somebody, we haven't even started, can you just play bass while we figure out what we're doing?'.
    "That's how it happened, by accident. I mean, I'm a guitar player, bass player anyway, you just play the riff, basically, for the most part. I thought it was easy, but it fucking ain't."

    The definite edition of I Disappear for me will be the live version from the MTV Movie awards 2000. Its awesome! There is so much more fire, urgency and sharpness to it. Despite a guitar solo, it sounds full of energy and overall its "heavier".
    I always thought the studio version sounded muddy and flat, robbing the songs potential. It sounds halfway there, like a demo in good progress.

    • @Skeletroy
      @Skeletroy 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Just checked out that version, good stuff. There was a comment thread about why that performance sounds so good - because it was for a live TV event, MTV would have had the final say on how it was mixed. Just a theory, but it's a decent one.

    • @kylereece1979
      @kylereece1979 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Skeletroy Its a fantastic mix. Sharp, precise, heavy. All it needs is a solo in that riff section before the furious fast finale. It is screaming for a solo. I think too in general that the lyrics were always a bit unfinished, repeating themselves. But live like that, I dont care because the band sound so great.
      I think too, that the studios grubby tone and muddy production lended more into the initial St. Anger sessions. The song was done not long 'fore The Presido writing sessions begun.

At this point, I was actually pretty cool with Load and Reload and even got a bootleg of the 2 new tracks from S & M and loved them. I thought that No Leaf Clover was pretty kickass. I can't say the same for St. Anger. I was hyped to finally hear Metallica's new album and I even got the weird special edition release with the CD on one side and the DVD on the other. This was the last Metallica album I bought. I have gotten to listen Death Magnetic by other means and was not that impressed. It was better than SA, but still kinda not great. I did stream Hardwired and there was some good stuff on there, but I haven't listened to anything newer... Oh, I listened to James yelling something about being a table. To me Metallica is a really good metal band that is carried to legendary status thanks to what it used to be, or rather the people they used to have. Once Dave Mustaine got kicked and Cliff Burton passed they lost all their legendary touch when crafting new songs.
    Still an great metal band and I Disappear was proof of them still being able to craft amazing songs.

      they got older, that its all that it is. You're creative touch its much fresher when you are exploring in the beginning. It's not because of loss of member like Dave or Cliff. Motorbreath is all James. Master of Puppets is more or less James and Kirk. and so on.

    To me I Disappear, No Leaf Clover and Minus Human sound like they could be from Load and Reload. The early 2000s was a limbo for Metallica. The Nu Metal scene took them by storm. I think they were a bit overwhelmed and ended up making St Anger. And the fact is that Metallica never regained their massive popularity. Don’t get me wrong they’re still the biggest metal/rock band in the world. But, before Nu Metal Lars used to be on TMZ and MTV Awards skits about Napster. They were massive.

    I Disappear is a mega CLASSIC! It was a song that felt perfect after ReLoad and I thought it was a taste of things to come... sadly that was not the case. Instead we got St.Anger train wreck, and then an even bigger train wreck with Death magnetic. And at this point I lost that close connection to the band I used to have. Not until Hardwired got released did my spirit start to reconnect with Metallica once more. and With 72 Seasons I felt that finally the album I had been waiting for was here! And the Metallica vibe has come full circle. 72 seasons sounds more like it should have been the album they released after I Disappear! I am just so happy that I have reconnected with Metallica current and not just their past.
