I remember waving to a woman who was hanging out her washing on top of one of the buildings and she waved back. It’s hard to explain just how close she really got to buildings and people. Exhilarating for the pilot but scary as well

Having lived near the hills surrounding Kai -Tak Airport, it is a really daunting area. I was there in the 50s. There weren't the electronics we have today. The old Pan Am pilots used to claim. It was best to approach HK, having had a good glug of alcohol?!!😅

  • @colinwaite697

I can never get enough of Kai Tak. Never flown into it, but it must have been a real experience to sit in the jump seat; especially on a windy day in poor weather. You pilots make it look so easy, but reality is not a simulator. The thought that you have hundreds of people in the cabin, all waiting to see their loved ones. All trusting your piloting skils. Awesome. Fly safe, guys.

One thing in particular must not be forgotten: All the Intercontinental flights were flown by pilots, some of whom had 12 hours of flight time, and they were correspondingly tired from the flight. And at the end such a challenge (the crosswind from the sea!).

My wife bought me a session on a 737 simulator for my birthday and I chose Kai Tak to land at. Never done it before but it was a very realistic and sweaty experience. I managed to get it down by "following the rabbits" and a lot of help from a qualified real instructor in right-hand seat.

This video didn't do justice. I lived outside the Kowloon wall city in one of those 4-story building less than one mile from the airport in 1963. A cockpit view would have shown the Pan AM 747 headed straight to the north Flag mountain and turned right 90 degree at the checkerboard time 2.17, and crabbing down onto the runway.
Years later I was working as an ME in Being Everett factory on 747-8, 777, 787.

  • @alexmomeyer9

Arrived at Hong Kong in the late 1990's on the upper deck of a 747-400 (Cathay Pacific). Had never been there before and did not know about the checkerboard landing. Pretty shocked when I looked out the window and saw building right outside and laundry hanging on apartment patios. Also a little surprised when we touched down and all I saw outside was water.
