Horde Mode Google Doc: drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/1RCDEfbaJafpfVCU-8iDjCZe_uoPjZLYz Horde Mode Discord: discord.gg/ZwASQMqQZS Happy holidays everyone, we'll be back after New Years!
I love the channel and your content BUT first you insult my beloved Templars and then you insult the majesty that is the drop pod!?!?!?! I now wish for nothing more than to play a game against you purely so I can deploy my full army via drop pods
I might be one of the few folks who care but, Adepta Sororitas is not a complete list yet. Missing Immolator and Rhino, both empty or full. Probably doesn't super matter since sisters are understandably a weak horde by nature. I just think their transports would give them a little better fighting chance.
This game mode has completely taken over my group in the same way commander took over normal magic. Also my favorite field promotion so far was promoting a nearly destroyed ghostkeel into a riptide, and then promoting a lone surviving fire warrior into the ghostkeel. Maximum value.
My group made a fun way to make a Horde Mode campaign. Start a campaign normally with 1000 crusade points and 5 RP per player. Instead of an Injury roll when a unit is Out of Action, roll d6: on a 1-3 that unit is destroyed and you lose its value in Crusade Points from your total, on a 4-6 it's injured and takes a battle scar. This balances your unit's growing strength with the risk of permadeath. We play two games per round, but no units that were used in the first game can be used in the second of that round (a second game is also opt-in, and not required). What I really like is it feels like you are fighting a war on multiple fronts. Last rule is that you can give and trade resources, including units if both armies could field that unit, to other players (it makes ally units a bit more enticing knowing you can give them to another player if they have suffered big losses). If you win your objective, roll a d6: 1-2: 200 Crusade Points 3-4: 1 Additional Requisition Point 5-6: 1 Additional Marked for Greatness Fill in the gaps as necessary, but this is enough to get you going.
SO!!! My fiance and I have played this format more often than any of our regular games. We both love it more than any other way of playing 40K. We've been playing really open with each other, so like not being shitlords about Secret Objectives, and even still the game is incredible. I have a billion Tyranids, so I figured, "Horde Army for Horde Mode," and because I have so many, I randomized the spawns based on what I have available. Our first turn of our first game spawned a Tervigon and 6 Zoanthropes (we played a 1000 point game, she was TSons, and I was GK). Needless to say, my Razorback failed to survive the first turn. Turn 2, we kill the Tervigon, and by now, there is also a Swarmlord and Carnifex with Venom Cannon. Throughout the game, we only fought 10 Genestealers, who aren't even a proper horde unit imo. XD It felt heroic as shit to basically sacrifice what was left of my army so she could complete her secondary, only for Reinforcements to give me A Librarian and 10 Paladins in the last turn. We fought and slew 3 Tervigons that game. :3 Absolutely epic game, absolutely legendary rules, my fiance and I have never played wargames together more, I will consume my friends' lives with this, hats off.
Oh hey, it's us again! We're going to be doing another Horde Mode stream coming up next month (infinite mode this time) where we'll be donating all the proceeds to charity. Could be a 90 minute stream, could be a 90 hour stream, we'll see!
Horde Mode is the whole reason I am working to learn the rules to 40k and building up my collection. It looks super fun and am looking forward to when I can jump into it
Maybe even try some different "horde" enemies from older editions or homebrew and kitbash your own. Making some mutants from lost and the damned would be great.
If you want a cheap and easy way to use drop pods (like god intended) is to use the stray orbital bombardment card to decide at what quadrant it lands in then roll a scatter dice and 2d6 to dictate where it lands. For the purposes of simplicity it can land anywhere outside 3 inches of a unit, if it lands within you can opt to reroll the scatter + distance or if the quadrant is too packed you can reroll the quadrant you land in
It’s unbelievable that GW has not produced anything like this, or at least anything as good as this. They made the bloody game! And it actually expands the hobby when people who can’t easily find others to game with can still play and enjoy the war game part of the hobby! Well done, lads!
This is also somtging that a shop could run as an event. They all have displays loaded with models, enough to probably run multiple tables of hord mode, at least a nid/GSC, chaos, and imperial.
I once had a situation where my 10 Hearthkyn Warriors lead by a Kâhl completed an objective and were rewarded with a promotion. However I rolled snake eyes leading to me technically neutering my best unit and butchering my entire army as a reward. My group allowed me to just not do anything to the unit but I was wondering what you have to say about such a thing happening.
I love when modders take content so far passed what the OC ever intended. I've been playing DotA since it came out, Hard Light's FreeSpace 2 mod for like 20 years, and the same with DayZ on Arma. I feel like this is going to have the same passion behind it. Here's to seeing where this project is on NYE of 2033.
I went from two and a quarter armies before I played Horde Mode(Blood Angels/Tyranids/Necrons) to seven armies(GSC/Tau/Knights/CSM) at various points amounts so that each game I can both play something differnent and go up against something different. My wife is on her third army (Orks/Sisters/Votann) now because of Horde Mode, and we have a blast with it every time we play. I really can't thank you all enough for the amount of work you put in and the amount of fun we've already received from it! EDIT: Finally got to listen to this, and man you are so right it never stops being funny having someone finally kill that Tyranofex and then another just spawns in its place. Especially when the person who kills it just groans while everyone else laughs
@poorhammer: We use the DeepStrike ability, so that shooting units Deep strike outside of the Horde Spawning Zone but may not move in the subsequent movement phase. Shooting units at maximum range and in cover if possible. NK units just outside of 9". That is fun so far and easy to do.
Overall, changes i was already doing or assumed so im happy. Ive been DM'ing it as the Horde with my massive Ork collection basically. I treated Weirdboy Da Jump as basically a wrapping "move" where it will altempt to get behind the closest unit, otherwise just move forward as much as you can. I always moved the first round and disembarked the second if i spawned a full transport The only target priority thing i started doing was i added a 6" 'optimal target' range, where if i can only hurt the closest model on 6s i'll target something else within 6" of that target instead. I did this pretty much immediately as i spawned a squad of Warbikers that immediately slammed into a shooty dread and proceeded to do nothing for 3 rounds lol. Meanwhile, there were normal marines like 3" away.
Had a funny situation one game where we failed to do the secondary that changes your secret objective, so my buddy and I both got a random new objective... And I got saboteur. It was all according to the great plan from the beginning!
@30:36 , this is honestly a good thing to have in the rules, and probably upfront, too. it sort of addresses the question you answered prior where table discretion is advised when playing the game. when there are questions that aren't inherently answered by the rules as written - either yours, or 40k's, it should ultimately be decided by the table what is the most fun interpretation of the rules or decision when it comes to unit abilities.
Gonna finally get my friends in on 40K with this. So far we've got Tyranids from the starter set and Genestealers from the combat patrol. They'll probably end up going up against my Sisters since I have the largest army so far.
First time playing the game mode, field promoted a squad of like 3 Hearhtkyn left and rolled like a 10, ended up replacing those 3 guys with 2 empty Hekaton Land Fortresses. Fun times
Cutting the deployment into 4 quarters with a 2x2 square made it so the units deployed in the back row would move to the front row and digivolve into a stronger unit. We used nids and we had to fight a whole ton of big bugs.
Even Tho I'm not interested in play hoard mode rn (nor do I have the model count quite yet) I'm still watching this bc poor hammer is my favorite 40k Chanel
I played “hard mode” as a means of turning up the difficulty and it was GREAT. I homebrewed a scenario where my guys had to defend a central point with terrain. On battle round 4, it got planet quakes and things went sideways real fast in the best way. Love this mode.
just thinking out of the top of my head, but I am imagining if people can make this work in the size of a Kill team, almost a "Darktide" or "Vermintide" mode. This would make people new to 40K even more affordable to start. Imagine a group of friends playing, but everyone can only bring a couple of individual infantry/troop models (not units). at the same time, for the first 4 turns, the horde side will just spawn troops (number of models adjusted to the number of players), and no vehicles or monstrous creatures will spawn until the last turn, at which point turn 5 will not end until either side managed to sweep the board. Promotions can be simplified to just changing the models from troop to captain / named characters equivalent, or to the Heavy support of those army if suitable, or simply allow the model to equip multiple weapons (regardless of rule) from their stats sheet per turn.
on jan 8th me and my group are meeting once more to do horde mode but to celebrate the new year, we're doing a 6 player game where every player brings all their chaos models and whatever they dont play will be part of the horde,, we have some demons, chaos space marines, world eaters, death guard, thousand sons and chaos knights!!
Thanks for making a great game mode that shows for potential for growth! It's great to have a rule set that is updated regularly with balance and fun in mind :D
I had a game with Tyranid as the horde and my 4 friends played space wolves salamander successor necron and orks We had a blast They would build Infront of the big monsters so they would have to walk through this extremely small area Loved it It was the best
Thanks for this, the game mode was a tonne of fun. Best memory so far was the misery card that gets you to destroy a unit costing me a stompa because my ally voted for it instead of my wounded nob on smasha squig.
Horde mode is one of the things I've heard really positive reviews for from just a general public not even specifically about this channel...that to me seems like its a great success I hope it goes well!
There are ways you can build the deck while having some control of where cards are in the deck so there way you can keep more power misery cards are later. I think that manipulating the misery deck could make the game harder or easier. Eldritch Horror have a thread stage deck.
I've done a bit of work with pretty-fying stat blocks and game rules for my own projects. It's not much, but I'd be open to giving it a try if you want.
As someone brand new to collecting the table top. I am SUPER interested in this and consider just making tokens as proxy until someday when i have enough models to field everything. l only have a 10 space marines that im painting up currently.
Same lol. I've just got the latest admech combat patrol, 20 guardsmen, and 2 space marine heroes (from the blind boxes). I guess there's always TTS lol
I want to play a game of this vs Nids where no matter what we roll for spawns its just waves of gaunts. Whats that you rolled double boxcars? Here's a full 2k list of just gaunts that just spawned in.
Just finished my first horde mode game ! Necrons and drukhari vs tyranid invasion ! I was drukhari and had the forward extraction secret obj, my army was fluffy and was wiped all besides one succubus and a 5 man of scourge. The scourge were able to make it to complete my SO my necron comrade was not so lucky. He was down to his last reanimator and field promoted to night bringer to go down swinging. We rolled extremely high, at least 1 10 on each spawn roll. We also failed the objective of clearing the evac zone turn 2 which stopped us from being able to bring in reinforcements which just added to our desperation
Love your providing updates. ill be trying thismyself after my group finishes up our soulbond campaign. Have you thought about doing a misplaced cargo card (D3 monitorium crates get placed on the table in the hostile side of the board at least 9 inches away from all player models. players can move up to the crate and crack it open roll a D6 : on a 5+ you get D6+3 RP, on a 3 or 4 gain D3+3 RP, on a 2 deploy a horde unit with the value of 4 and on a 1 deploy a horde unit with the value of 6.
Mean I give feedback when I had my game but there really needs to be a scaler on RP for # of players, with each player gaining RP and doing secondaries we had so many respawning, repairing, and added units that it wasn’t even a slight challenge despite it being 2 people’s first game
And this very clearly demonstrates that you don't know RAI unless you are specifically told what it is. And if you get told in writing, that makes it RAW.
For Aircraft could they be removed from the tables and instead are brought in as either a RP ability where the aircraft will make a single pass on the table, fire its weapons then leave? Same for the enemy but its a Misery card something like "Hostile Air Space" Where an enemy flyer will make a single pass ? Just to give them something to do?
Its a co op game, you can rewind and reroll whole attacks if mistakes are made, interperate rules however you feel, change rules that don't make sense for particular things, don't do something if you don't think it fits, whatever, as long as both players agree. There is only the two of you, no opponent, very easy to just rule with whatever is more fun for the both of you, you want to play hard, play hard, wanna soften the exact rules a bit so your team mate doesn't just get wiped immediately, need that extra half an inch on the charge to have an epic moment. Think of being a DM in DnD, rule of cool it, do whats most fun anyway love your work and keep it up
Wouldn’t a Drop pod just come in as close as legally possible and immediately deploy the unit. That is at least how I use it because filling a drop pod with infernus is funny.
GW does not own rectangles with green and red rectangles inside. In fact GW owns virtually nothing other than a few copyright names. They don’t own space marine, or eldar, or imperial guard, or necron….etc
I haven’t tried this yet but it sounds great…. My only disappointment is that flyers don’t really work, my primary army is flyer focused and with out fliers I only have about 1300 points… first they are not very meta and now they are not hoard mode legal either. Looks like I need to get more models
Speaking of Knights, are knight players able to mix in other factions? As in I roll to spawn re-enforcements, can i bring in Henchmen or other Imperial Agents for example?
can we also talk about how air strike is the still the most broken shit? and should absolutly cost MUCH more, AND also be limitied to once per player and once per turn or something? because as it stands, when we want to play optimally.. there is NOTHING better you can do than just blow up the ENTIRE cover on the enemy side turn 2 and 3 for this cheap until the enemies spawn in an empty field and just be shot dead immediatly.

Fill in the gaps as necessary, but this is enough to get you going.
i dont really have anything above 2-3k points so the idea i thought of was to use the grey horde sitting on my shelves as our opponent
Every unit that kills you at the end you gotta paint

For drop pods and deepstrike rules, you could use objects as a center point, then scater dice like rules for where they spawn.
Replying here to save this for myself. I want to land at point X, I miss by 2d6 in scatterdie direction
Maybe toss in a rules commentary like GW did. You can put things in like instead of random abilities pick the abilities that help the horde best.

Damn, I didn't think they'd really kick Eric off for losing the game show.
I, for one, am not surprised in the least. Brad totally would.
Since i both own genestealer cult and nids, the play there was to use cult units on the first turns and nids on the latter
Never clicked a link so fast in my life. Thank you guys for putting so much work into this. I’ve wanted a PvE style Warhammer game for a long time.
Gonna finally get my friends in on 40K with this. So far we've got Tyranids from the starter set and Genestealers from the combat patrol. They'll probably end up going up against my Sisters since I have the largest army so far.

Excited to have the ad mech tall boy show up now, I need to have some reason for buying the damn thing.

Thank you for creating such a beautiful thing for the community
Thanks for the patch notes, as well as keeping it updated in the first place.
This has become the game to play at my flgs in Raleigh. Thanks for the update and happy holidays bro.
Thank you for the timestamps in the description!

Surprise episode! 🎉
Merry Christmas and relaxed holidays to all of you! Have a great start into the new year - see you on the other side!
I’ll get people in my playgroup to play it again so we can test out the new rules and get more feedback we really enjoy it.
I had a game with Tyranid as the horde and my 4 friends played space wolves salamander successor necron and orks
We had a blast
They would build Infront of the big monsters so they would have to walk through this extremely small area
Loved it
It was the best
You guys rule! Thanks for all the hard work that went into this!
Thanks for acknowledging my issues with the Biovore. Ive decided to play them as strong as possible
What would you do if GW released a "Last Stand" gamemode that would be wierdly simmilar to what you have done with the Horde Mode?
Man brad was serious when he said Eric should leave.
Horde mode is so interesting to me. Can't wait till I can actually play it.

Same lol. I've just got the latest admech combat patrol, 20 guardsmen, and 2 space marine heroes (from the blind boxes). I guess there's always TTS lol
I gotta say, horde mode was the last push I needed to start my first 40k army, so I can play while the AoS mode isn't ready yet :D
Merry Xmas to you all fine fellas! And happy new year
Just wanted to say me and 3 folks totally had a great time, and it was their first or second game ever. thanks for the update!
This video has a Garfield without Garfield vibe
Someone at my lgs is trying to put togethor a crusade and it would be sick to be able to incorporate horde mode into this
Happy New Year everybody!!
I want to play a game of this vs Nids where no matter what we roll for spawns its just waves of gaunts. Whats that you rolled double boxcars? Here's a full 2k list of just gaunts that just spawned in.
Keep up the good work. This sounds like so much fun.

Just in time for the holidays🎁

Mean I give feedback when I had my game but there really needs to be a scaler on RP for # of players, with each player gaining RP and doing secondaries we had so many respawning, repairing, and added units that it wasn’t even a slight challenge despite it being 2 people’s first game
I love seeing all the bug reports
And this very clearly demonstrates that you don't know RAI unless you are specifically told what it is. And if you get told in writing, that makes it RAW.
No drop pods?! No steel rain?!
"The codex astartes does not support this action."
Everyone-"SHUT UP LEANDROS!"
Will definitely follow for more
Rad bombing will go CRAZY in this mode.
If you do an AoS pod call it wagelessigmar
Very cool! Will play this once I painted up more of my Tyranids!
Question: Does Horde Mode work with the Boarding Actions Terrain / Game mode?
For Aircraft could they be removed from the tables and instead are brought in as either a RP ability where the aircraft will make a single pass on the table, fire its weapons then leave? Same for the enemy but its a Misery card something like "Hostile Air Space" Where an enemy flyer will make a single pass ? Just to give them something to do?
Video/series idea: Horde mode highlights.
Share some of those stories you’re excited about that the players give you permission to talk about.
I comment to bring attention to this episode
Sadly I haven't had the chance to play this just yet, but I'm hoping to get my playgroup to give it a shot when we get back together again next year
Hard mode needs to be called Ruthless, obviously
Looking forward to the AoS port!
As a rule of thumb you can't copyright rules
on the Dawn of War Warhammer media. Look for a press kit. Materials contained there should be A OK to use.
Thank you for the update, not bored at all.
Think of being a DM in DnD, rule of cool it, do whats most fun
anyway love your work and keep it up
Christmas came early I guess!
Wouldn’t a Drop pod just come in as close as legally possible and immediately deploy the unit. That is at least how I use it because filling a drop pod with infernus is funny.
If you want added difficulty, then "add skulls" as you would in Halo, like, use some of those Crusade buffs, or just make some up
Love this
field promotion now has the problem about rolling into a blank table value.
Hell yeah! Love it!
GW does not own rectangles with green and red rectangles inside.
In fact GW owns virtually nothing other than a few copyright names. They don’t own space marine, or eldar, or imperial guard, or necron….etc
So technically possible to field promote two gaunts into two carnifexes right!
I haven’t tried this yet but it sounds great…. My only disappointment is that flyers don’t really work, my primary army is flyer focused and with out fliers I only have about 1300 points… first they are not very meta and now they are not hoard mode legal either. Looks like I need to get more models
You should spell Hard Mode like Harde Mode
Speaking of Knights, are knight players able to mix in other factions? As in I roll to spawn re-enforcements, can i bring in Henchmen or other Imperial Agents for example?
Whatcha doin. Touching myself. You?
Engagement for the engagement throne
Fyi! For more fun and terror, use horde mode for boarding action!
can we also talk about how air strike is the still the most broken shit? and should absolutly cost MUCH more, AND also be limitied to once per player and once per turn or something?
because as it stands, when we want to play optimally.. there is NOTHING better you can do than just blow up the ENTIRE cover on the enemy side turn 2 and 3 for this cheap until the enemies spawn in an empty field and just be shot dead immediatly.
love me some pleasantries. Love me some horde mode!
Why can’t my three guardsmen transformer into three Lemun Russes?
