I LOVE Love love hemp bedding. I live in Alaska and I made it through the entire 6 month winter with hemp deep litter...and NO SMELL even after 6 months!!!
Hemp bedding is definitely the best I've used. As you said very low dust and no odor. Also very easy to spot clean poops. In the winter for warmth in their run, I use a combination of straw and hemp.
Deep litter method with hemp, pdz, and first Saturday lime! Absolutely no smell, no insects, hardly any maintenance!! Plus compost for garden!
I thought you couldn’t do deep litter with Saturday like because it killed good AND bad bacteria? I have Saturday like but also do deep litter so am curious if I can use both!
@@kimreed5160 I’ve heard that about DE but from what I’ve researched online the lime doesn’t do that. I also reached out to the company and they said it wouldn’t hurt the composting process.

I really like the hemp bedding. I used it once, but then couldn't afford it again. I don't understand why it is so expensive when it is so renewable and grows much faster than trees. I am going to try to work it into my budget again because I noticed it did last a lot longer than the pine shavings and it did not smell.
I was wondering the same. Makes no sense why it’s so much more!
I honestly don’t know either. Maybe because hemp growers don’t get the same subsidies that other crops get? Or maybe just because demand isn’t that high so it’s kind of like a specialty product?
@@WelcometoChickenlandia Who knows??? But I am hoping it will gain popularity and maybe eventually come down in price. When I had it, I used some of it in my brooder and that was really nice. It had no smell and seemed to absorb the poo and I wasn't cleaning the brooder out constantly. Plus it seemed easier for the chicks to walk around in when they were tiny. It was pretty amazing.
$70/bale. When it is in the neighborhood of $7 I’ll try it.

MOST amazing natural product produced by Mother Earth. Sad, sad shame we've been lied to since the 30's about it.
I bought hemp from Old Dominion Hemp (right before this video came out) and I will NEVER GO BACK TO SHAVINGS again. The virtually dust-free aspect was enough for me to convert, and the odor control is just amazing! Hemp doesn't get that really stale, pungent smell in the coop when it gets old like shavings. It's super absorbent so I'm using less as I deep liter. I really feel like I've done something very healthy for my chickens, and myself, by reducing all that dust.
I am very grateful to have free mulch available nearby from the city- smells like pine and juniper and I love it. Plus you can’t beat free quality mulch!

I was just shopping for hemp bedding this morning… but shocked at price… PERFECT TIMING 🤩
I use Hemp and love it. When I clean out the coop & nesting boxes, it all goes in my garden beds. One big bundle lasts for easily 8 + months for me using the deep liter method. I add a light layer every couple of months or so and then clean it completely at about 8 months and put in fresh. I only use about 1/2 bundle for each clean out so I don’t find it expensive at all since it last so long, does not smell and goes so far.
I used to raise quail. I always use pine shavings. Boy was that smelly. I now have chickens and that hemp betting. I absolutely love it. I have checks in the office with no smell😊

WHOA! I just checked the price, not able to pull that off ever. I bets it is very nice, but I buy that same size of horse bedding for $8, no dust, works great

I’ve been trying to stay away from pine in the coop cuz of the fumes, but the aspen shavings at TS are great! And less than $8 a bag. With only 4 chickens it’s quite doable!

I use hemp bedding and love it. No smell and it breaks down to compost fast.
Lol I do use sand…I live in NY and only have 8 chickens. I scoop poop every morning. I’m glad we are still good lol! Just got your book….soooo excited!!! Thankyou for all that you do!!
i read...scoop poop every day...omg...in 10 years i never cleaned my coop bedding, only take out stuff for the garden...deep littler with leaves :)

I have been using pine shavings too with PDZ on poop shelf. Recently bought hemp bedding but haven't put it into the coop yet. Thanks for trying it before me.
I love hemp bedding, I like the smell and I like that it isn't as dusty as pine shavings or straw. I use all three though, I feel like the all have they're own benefits! I love the product review videos you do, because you are not biased and tell you honest opinion!!!! Thanks for another great vid! :)

I’ve used pine shavings from the start and recently tried out hemp. I love it!! I do the deep litter and have great ventilation and because I wasn’t doing a reset on the coop I added a layer on top of my shavings. It was very noticeable that the dust level decreased. The girls do seem to like it too and next month when I do the total clean out refresh I’m hoping to go 💯% hemp.
I have an open air covered coop/run so for me in my desert climate sand has been awesome. No smell, no dust, drains during the rain, easy clean up and dont need to offer grit. I do a daily rake of their coop/run floor of poo. I also use First Saturday Lime. I used pine shavings for our first month and it was a nightmare. We have high winds and it was a mess when it rained and it smelled. Cleaning was not fun.
I use hemp bedding as well and to be honest I even feel weird saying that our coop smells lovely but it sure does. Hemp is the best!!!
Hi Dalia. The only deep litter I have used----since I am a newbie is industrial hemp and so far I like this brand called Aubiose. Super absorbent and it smells great....very low dust. Loving the new book BTW!

I use alfalfa hay, my hens love it and eat the leaves. The stems work well left on the ground. When the alfalfa stems turn yellow I scoop it up with the poop and put it directly on my raised beds and in my potted trees. Chicken poop never burns plants, even seedlings.
I am moving the flock into a bigger 8 x 12 coop and I bought this Hemp. I'm excited to try it!

I tried a bag of it in my brooder that is in my home and it was the most dust i've ever had in my house. Never again.
I use hemp and pine shavings combo. 👍🏻 semi “deep litter”.
I've been using sand and pine pellet bedding, I just set up the coop but I'm open to other ideas

I’m a huge fan of hemp. Tried everything else but no go. The hemp lasts forever, is so absorbent, and dust minimum. I use it in coop and run.
sweet video ...and ...while i sometimes use organic straw, i mostly use leaves rakes from driveways, makes great soil

It really matters who you buy your hemp from. I can’t get it locally so I order on Amazon. I’ve been using it for two years and I love it! The last batch I ordered I hated. Even wrote my first negative review on their product.
I’m sold, maybe I’ll give this brand a try.

Ran across your channel when looking for weasel traps. I’m pretty sure we have one.
Anyway I have a great deterrent for larger predators I’ve used since the 90’s.
We had cougars 😫 I went in a bucket and used a weed sprayer to MARK EVERYTHING!
Hunters pay good $ to hide their scent, I’ve known some that stored their hunting close In garbage bags because of scent.
We had three cougars a mom and two big cubs stay at our place and after I did this no more tracks next to my house.
This works for Fox, Cyote, Bear, Bobcat, and cougar.
Now I need a cat safe trap for weasels!

Love hemp bedding, its quite expensive so am just using it in the nesting boxes for now, and using river sand on the coop floor. the poopy sand and hemp can later be composted and added to the vege garden.

I have always used hemp bedding. It helps so much with odor. My neighbor said she never smells my chickens. Always and forever hemp over here.

I use both straw and wood shavings. The hens love to scratch and throw it all over the run. The only dust issue I have is when they dust bathe in the DE. I think I just became a crazy chicken lady by placing an order for 3 more hens and 1 rooster, but some how my cart contained 2 roosters! So not sure what to do with the extra one if they both survive.

I use a combination, sand and ag lime on the floor with pine chips on top. I've only been doing this for a few months. It's worked pretty well for odor.

I use wood chips in one and just sand in my other because my soil is naturally beach sand but I have started mixing in bedding again because I like the compost it creates and how my trees respond

Used pine shavings can be used to spread around blueberries and raspberries, its great for them.

I have 2 apple trees in with my raspberries. Do you think it would hurt the apple trees at all? I am going to be cleaning out my coop shortly and it is a hassle dragging all the used bedding to the dump. We just have a small yard and I have no place to put a compost pile.
@@cackleberrycottage2340 would be good for your apple trees, AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT PILE IT TO HIGH AROUND YOUR TREES. I have seen people who with good intentions put too much mulch around trees. 1/2 inch on top and your good.🙂🙂🙂

What about a blend of hemp and pine shavings? A 50-50 mix would cut your hemp cost in half. Most people use pine shavings alone and somehow get by.

I find it awfully expensive but i do personally like how it works. But i find my birds really seem to like to eat it. Not sure thats beneficial. But when mixed with pine shavings it really makes them work the bedding over

Hey! This isn’t really in relation to the video, and you’re free not to answer, but I’ve been having some problems with baby chicks I’m watching over and would love your advice. The owner wasn’t great about watching their butts (they’re all chicks) and all of them have pasty butt, to various degrees. One of the severe ones, after getting it off, has been pecking at their butt/anus for the past 5 minutes, very distressed, even though the poop is off (they were pecking at the poop when it was on). I used a Q-Tip, warm water, and a _pinch_ of vegetable oil. Any reason for this?
Edit: Put on coconut oil, don’t know if it helped pain/inflammation. Going out to buy Preparation H. Hope the chick does well
Did she get injured when the poop was removed? It’s normal for them to be annoyed when they are wet from being cleaned. As long as she isn’t injured I wouldn’t worry about it too much unless it doesn’t stop long after she’s dry.

I started with deep litter/hemp, didn't work for me. I now use pine shavings, keep good ventilation, and scoop daily. Everything is much cleaner and the daily scoop is a continuous source of (ultimately) compost for the garden.
Why didn't it work for you?
I dumb question but does the hemp smell like marijuana? Some things with hemp do. My daughter and I do not tolerate that smell, makes us ill. Thank you!!😊
It doesn’t smell that way to me. It smells kind of like pine? I’m not sure how to describe it. But maybe you should find someone who uses it to see how it smells to you. I don’t find it “skunky” at all lol.

It doesn’t! We avoided those for our blend. In fact, our hemp bedding is made from hurd fiber which is a lot more absorbent than the other parts of the plant.

I'd love having a coop that smells like a cozy head shop! But I'm already struggling to keep my Buff Orp in shelled hemp seeds. Goldie loves 'em, especially when she's broody like she is now. It's so sweet to hear her squeak of surprised delight when I pour a handful of hemp seeds into her bowl! I stock up on 8-12 lbs at a time from an eBay seller that offers varying prices based on country of origin and growing season. It strains my fixed budget, but making my birds happy can trick me into enjoying life, so it's doubly worth it.

Haha it is fun. But I try to let everyone know that you don’t need fancy bells and whistles to keep chickens happy! Many people keep them for next to nothing and they do great! ❤️🐔❤️
People are so "consumer" brainwashed. Most people with chickens have access to some sort of FREE bedding. I have a chipper, so I make my own bedding. I could also use my planer to make chips from old pine 2x4s. Most people could simply use grass clippings. I think one of the blessings of chickens is the idea of making protein at little or no cost. My chickens eat a variety of foods, including snails from my property that I cook. I also raise mealworms and their beetles right in the coop. The beetles crawl out of the bucket system I built (basically just a bucket with holes at a height where the beetles can crawl out but the worms can't). The beetles climb out and they are instant food.
Love this video though I think I'll stick with pine shavings due to the cost and the large chicken palace my 'guests' live in requiring a large quantity of shavings. Your videos are so fun, thank you.🐔
