Yes dopsticks are the go for sure, also put a small bevel on the bottom of the cab so it sits in your setting better, love watching your videos magical country.
Thought you were never going to mention dop sticks. They are invaluable for getting control of your grinding. I like to use them right from the start. Free hand cabochons are so fun to do, bit of an art form looking for the best image in each stone. polish up to 30,000 grit, yet cerium oxide on a leather wheel still makes them pop!!! Nice shop, well appointed!! Nice cabs!! My first cab. was from a piece of brown agate, the banding made a picture that looked just like Vancouver Island, later I went to a silver smithing class, and made a bezel setting for it. Rock On!!!!
Excellent lesson and stunning ocean picture stone cabs, thank you for sharing your knowledge god bless and stay safe and well 🙏🙏🙏🙏🥰🥰🥰🥰👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️
Back in the seventies, I had a Sears Roebuck catalog, Lapidary tub mill. Golly, you could get almost anything from Sears back then. I did a bit of slabbing and cabochon cuts. I lived in sedimentary zones though, and didn't have much money for material. I still live in sedimentary rocks, no longer have the equipment, but I have the urge to play. Thanks for the dream.
I love the idea of doing this. You seem to be so connected to a community of prospectors and people who do everything that has to do with the business. It must come from a lifetime of love and experience for finding gold and gems.
This is the best cab making video on TH-cam! I've seen so many. You are a great teacher Dan Hurd. Thank you for doing what you do. I surely appreciate it. I did what you said to do and found my Rock People at the Yuciapa Valley Gem and Mineral Society in Yuciapa California. They have an amazing workshop there with all the equipment I need to get creative with. Rock on!
I have been working with this stone for about 25 years and have cut hundreds of cabs. Mine came from the original working of the site. It had been called ocean picture rock. The stone, or at least the cabs cut from it, are a combination of serpentine, calcite and veins of quartz. The blue is the calcite and it is somewhat soft. I have had really bad luck tumbling it because of the different hardnesses.
Dan Hurd, thank you for taking the time to share the actual process to create a dome. I recently bought a HI Tech Diamond 8" slant cab because I fell in love with the adventure of rockhounding and turning it into something beautiful to share. Thank you again, you rock!! LOL!!
I highly recommend you use dopsticks on the backs of your cabs when you work them. You can get more evenly domed cabs by rolling your cabs on your wheels, and you'll still have all your fingertips intact by the time you finish cabbing!
Why choose one when you can watch both channels! Both Pullitzer Opal and Black Opals Direct are incredible resources. Both of them are far and away experts of their industries, and they make and work with some of the most incredible opals seen anywhere!
Dan i have to say that i really enjoy watching your videos they are really interesting and real, not at all like some of the fakes out there that claim an ounce of gold in every pan. keep up the good work and i look forward to seeing more. thank you
Very beautiful jewelry specially with the ocean picture stone, few years ago I see in assisi (italy) a store with this kind of stone...yes very expensive piece or jewelry, interesting video thanks Dan 😊
I can see that every different thing you do, requires a different skill, different equipment, and you couldn't possibly do it all in one day. I would love to dig for the ocean stone, and then be able to cut a piece and polish it and take it home with me. This would be great for for tourists. If the person who owned the cutting and polishing equipment has a pile of rough ocean stone, And a tourist could pick out a stone to buy , cut and polish to take home. They could also shop for professionally cut stones at the same time. And of course someone would need to be there to give a demonstration.
haven't cut slabs since the late seventies. have a slab cutter in my basement. was mostly interested in faceting stones at that time. I'm retired now, so a lot of time to do things again .I still have my faceting machine.
17:10 my favourite: You can see the big wave, shore, silhouette of an island on the left and a flock of seagulls and on the right like a sunset I guess :D
Great video Dan thank you for telling people how to find gems and rocks legally. Hopefully people listen and stay away from places they are not supposed to be. Cheers!
My thoughts, you cut the most beautiful parts out d/t the "hole". Very nice "waves" that were to the left. You might want to consider working with epoxies to fill inclusion holes so you can use the best parts of the stone.
I sure enjoyed watching you as you explained in nice detail the many steps it takes to cut, grind, and smooth every piece with care. Really nice shop to work in!
I've been dying to try some cabs, but the equipment is so expensive. I had NO idea there were such clubs! I bet Capilano Rock and Gem knows if theres one in our city. I love watching the BlackOpalDirect channel. He's a master grinder and polisher, and I've learned so much from him.
That was very interesting! Glad to see there was a way to keep your fingers away from a spinning sanding wheel...but the metal pan bottom - if the stone slips that might be a costly(time) mistake.
Those are so beautiful and the shine is amazing!!! I love the shorter beard on you! You don't look like a vagabond walking around town scratching himself anymore. Lol
Linda i'm going to have to respectfully disagree... Bring back the beard! All prospectors should have a beard at least half way to their navel for luck!
I watch Justin/Black Opal Direct...and he does such amazing work. You did a great job~ most of the other folks I have watched making cabs just make me cringe! lol. Lovely pieces Dan!
This was a good one and unexpectedly posted EXACTLY when I was asking the question about the final polishing paste which you so wonderfully brought up. I kept forgetting what it was called so thanks!
Hahahahahaha!!! The rock dust in your beard is all too familiar! LOL I hate the way it drives out the hair! Love you Dan will be making an order soon....😜
Happy I could be here before and during. Always interesting videos Dan keep it up my fellow red beard. Wife says I need a amish hat to fit my red beard.
The triangular one reminds me of the great salt lake in Utah during a winter month before it dried up. Gorgeous work! Still curious how you managed to squees a G into the intro "welgcome", must be a teacher thing. Haha
ARROWHEAD'S DAN! I'm curious. Have you ever or would you consider making some designer arrowhead's with your samples of Ocean Picture Stone? I think they would look quite epic with this raw talent you have for these jewelry pieces here. Dan they look INCREDIBLE !
Wow Dan, is there anything you can't do?! Thank you for this informative video as my daughter has been after me to get into lapidary and I had no clue where to start. Love the shout out to MeMiner! Rob at Michigan Rocks has some great lapidary how to videos as well. Thanks again for the great video!
Thanks Dan. I loved this video. You have gotten very adept at making cabochons. I hope you’re saving the scraps you cut off. I would love to have those pieces!

Hello Dan! Sending 💘from Sacramento. So glad your doing well

Always love your energy sir! Perfect topic for me as I’m learning lapidary and am totally hooked!

Have you thought about putting some gold in the ocean picture stone to resemble the sun just an idea i think it would look amazing
How would you put gold into a stone lol
@@__-bz7wh if you can take it out you can put it back in I’m sure there’s away
